| Eccerion08-09-07, 01:16 PM | I cant recall where I read it, but I was under the impression that time travel wasnt possible on Toril. Is this right? if not how would one go about sending something say one year into the past? |
| Narsil08-09-07, 01:20 PM | Well there's a ninth level spell in one of the older sourcebooks that allows you to go back in time to the time of Netheril. There's also a spell that does something similar (without as much temporal range) in one of the few 3rd edition Dragonlance sourcebooks that are out there. I'd say have time travel controllable via a few a high-level spells. Or have a rather expensive device created for it. |
| dragonheart08-09-07, 04:29 PM | there were ways to sort of do time travel in earlier version. I say sort of because there were strict limitations on what you could do - which basically came down to a single simple unbreakable rule - You shall not change history!. You could go back but either you became the actual folks about whom those legends were created or your actions had no significant impact on the time line. IE - if you go back to the fall of Myth Drannor to try to save it either you are simply one of the many mid-high level groups trying to help and sadly your efforts went unrecorded or your efforts did get recorded - as the events we have today and you were not able to change anything significantly but were able to accomplish those things that are recorded. |

| PharaunMizzrym08-11-07, 06:10 AM | Are you a DM wanting to send players back in time or a player who wants to go back in time? If you're a DM how about using a magical mishap? |
| Eccerion08-11-07, 11:35 AM | Actually my group were thinking of using the Sanctify the wicked spell on an evil outsider, then send its gem back through time so we wouldnt have to wait the whole year for our good fiend:D Course we just now noticed that that spell dosnt work on evil outsiders so its a moot point now :( |
| 1 ton ghost08-11-07, 03:32 PM | only difinitive text i've seen was the mind flayers and their futurist exploits, coming back here, and it was a herculanean effort: several god-brains had to die for the good of the race to enable cosmic spell/psionic action/whatever. 2 theories: 1-you go back, can alter time flow of present, screw up everything. i imagine gods would supress this, especially Law, Death types, not to mention the Time domain. 2-you create an alternate conduit so to speak. a seperate space/time. basically, have a ball, you're not going to kick start the Apocalypse. |
| MarkusTay6308-12-07, 04:10 AM | There's an island in the Sea of Fallen Stars, in the PotFS book. The island is basically an extincy volcano, and inside the crater is a 'lost world' - dinosaurs and cave-Elves (don't ask). The real deal is that the entire crater is a portal, and once you enter the valley you are tranported back in time to Toril's 'stone age (which really wasn't all that long ago, compared to ours). If you crawl back out of the valley, you exit the portal (I guess the entire rim is the gate. So, if you want to have fun and kill the Sarrukh before they even evolve, find a way of tunneling out of the valley from inside - that should do the trick. ;) Me personally? I would wait for those bastards coming through from Tintageer.... |
| The WarOverlord08-17-07, 04:42 PM | I cant recall where I read it, but I was under the impression that time travel wasnt possible on Toril. Is this right? if not how would one go about sending something say one year into the past? Have your PC 1) Jump to the Left 2) Step to the right (4 times) 3) With the Hands on the hips 4) Bring the Knees in tight 5) But it's the pelvic thrust that really drives you insane :P Thing is that There are godlings governing Magic, Tech, and such in the Forgotten Realms so no Technology is is going to allow time trasvel unless "Ogi" and Gond allows it and No Spell is going to allow time travel unless Mystra and Azuth Allows it. And this means that a lot of the Older Spells such as from Netherese days isn't neccesarily going to work any more cause Mystra did ban anything 10th level or Higher and a lot of Plane altering magic that could potentally damage the Weave (Such as going back in time far enough to see how that idiot mortal tried to take Mystra's place) A way around this, of course, is to go into another neutral plane (One without meddlesome godlings or ones who could care less) , Time Travel via magic or tech, then re-enter the Forgotten Realms in the proper time period |
| Karsus the Mad08-17-07, 07:18 PM | (Such as going back in time far enough to see how that idiot mortal tried to take Mystra's place) Hardly an idiot. In the words of the Living Tribunal, I did exactly what any mortal tries: Replace that which is higher than itself, with itself. Besides. Mystra didn't exist yet. It was Mystryl....and Mystra was a mentally retarded farm girl who accidentally became a goddess.... Anyhoo, the 9th level spell "Teleport Through Time", which can be found in the Portals of Faerun articles, here on the WotC website, gives a spell, and the location of a portal, which gives a user the ability to go through time, without any divine "lazy author" restrictions, unlike that which was showcased throughout the poorly spelled, and edited, Netheril: Empire of Magic, and copied almost directly into Cormanthyr: Empire of Elves;) |
| 42108-17-07, 09:36 PM | (Such as going back in time far enough to see how that idiot mortal tried to take Mystra's place) I beg to think otherwise, uber-archmage stealing a deity' job is a common plot in the multiverse. Karsus is the only one to actually manage to transform a young mentally-retarded farmgirl into a greater deity. It's a feat to be proud of.... Back on track Take a look a this http://www.wizards.com/dnd/files/chrono.rtf The FR-related part is quoted here for your convinence FORGOTTEN REALMS(R)/Kara-Tur/AL-QADIM(R)/Maztica/MALATRA(TM) campaigns: Toril has many powerful forces devoted to keeping its history intact. Elminster, Khelben Arunsun, the Seven Sisters, and many other powerful wizards have been granted certain undefined powers from Mystra, goddess of magic, to prevent all chronomantic spells from working in their vicinities. Supernatural or priestly agents of Deneir and Oghma (Toril's gods of history, so to speak) are believed able to follow a chronomancer's trail and undo any damage he has done. Finally, a chronomancer who seriously disrupts history is likely to encounter an avatar of the most directly concerned deity, a meeting which will likely result in the abrupt termination of that chronomancer's life. Other than this, chronomancers are known to make limited, low-key trips through time in Faerun, Kara-Tur, Zakhara, and Maztica. Native chronomancers are usually devout followers of both a deity of magic (e.g., Mystra) and a deity of time or history (e.g., Deneir or Oghma), serving as historians and information collectors. Elven chronomancers of Labelas Enoreth are possible. Shou Lung, in Kara-Tur, might have a secret, officially approved group of chronomancers, probably Historians, working for the Emperor. Ancient empires such as Netheril, Raurin, Narfell, Raumathar, and Cormanthyr might have known of chronomancy or time travel, though this did not prevent their fall; these empires can be reached only through vortices or by using powerful magical devices or artifacts. Most wizards here refer to Temporal Prime as the Plane or Demiplane of Time. Aside from human, half-elven, and elven chronomancers, rumors pass that a few hare and crane hengeyokai from Shou Lung have gained chronomancer abilities of up to the 9th level of ability. Their time travels seem motivated solely for either escaping current troubles (for hare hengeyokai) or official historical studies (for crane hengeyokai). Possible psionic time travelers from Toril could include couatl, shedu, and titans, as well as humans and demihumans. |
