| Suin Bahhar09-02-07, 05:41 PM | Anyone has a conversioin of totemic magic described in Elves of Evermeet? The abilities seem like extended druidlike spells crafted/scribed/painted onto wooden totems or charms. The balancing of these 2ed totemic spirit abilities is hard though. |
| Lord Karsus09-04-07, 03:43 PM | -We're working on it... |
| Suin Bahhar09-04-07, 07:14 PM | Can I help? |
| Lord Karsus09-04-07, 08:20 PM | -Sure, any help is welcome and appreciated. I don't recall if anyone has solidly stated they want to tackle Totemic Magic, so if you have any specific ideas, now's the time to shoot 'em off. |
| Suin Bahhar09-05-07, 08:05 AM | Was thinking of making totemic magic a feat chain for divine spellcasters with a naturespirit diety or the Seldarine. These feats work like crafting feats but dont cost xp to build and the items allow the user to benefit from several daylong or permanent bonusses. Sometimes a masterwork component needs to be build before an inscribed totem can become active. The items count as magic item slots for the respectif bodypart they are carried with. I was actually thinking of linking totemic magic with the ideas of Eytan Bernstien for incarnum. Only the green elves used raw magic to emulate features of spirits they encountered in the primal forrests. |
| Suin Bahhar09-10-07, 09:37 AM | Green Elven Totemic Magic Feats: Spirit Totem [General] Requirements: wild elf or copper elf wis 13, must be taken at first level Benefit: A particular sylvan totem has called out to you. Beasts surrounding the areas of ancient green elves inspired awe with their particluar strengths. The animals and magical creatures are worshipped in a primitive way. The green elves believed by worshipping the ancestors of the forrest certain powers inherent in the souls of sylvan beasts could be emulated. The runes when applied on the body or objects help channel the spiritual energy to shape in beneficial ways. The channelling requires some understanding of arcane ways too as the energy reacts to calls from the weave, as a primitive raw magic fuels most totemic powers. Some runes of higher power are permanent but most release the residual spiritutal energy after one day. Most runes enscribed on items must be worn on a specific bodyslot or on a particular part of an object to function properly. Some runes must be tattoed or painted on the respective bodyslots or item parts. Crafting Runes A craft tattoes, calligraphy or woodworking check of a least rune requiers the inscription time and a dc 10 check, a lesser rune a dc 12 and a greater rune a dc 16 check to result in a imbued tattoo, inscribed item or woodcrafted idol. With a -10 on the skill check the required time to enscribe the item or bodypart is divided by four. | Suin Bahhar09-10-07, 03:58 PM | So I think the greater totem runes should be more 'green elfy'. Any suggestions or comments? |
| MerrikCale09-10-07, 09:21 PM | nice job. I was interested to see how you would translate it. Without studying it in depth, I think you did a solid job |
| Suin Bahhar09-11-07, 07:27 AM | Why thank you! I'll add some flavor describtions and maybe some epic totem runes later on. You heard it right, epic totem runes! Powers of the spirit world fused in aspectlike transformations by totemists. |
| Suin Bahhar09-11-07, 09:32 AM | List of epic totems: epic totems: the Lone Wolf, Chameleon, the Protector, the Manyleafed, the Mystic Seer, the Forest Hunter, the Black Archer, the Dolphin Prince These are all aspects of the Seldarine mostly revered by the green elves. Fenmarel, Erevan, Felarathael(Corellon), Rillifane, Sehanine, Solonor, Shevarash & Sashelas. Feat Totemic mastery [Epic] Requirement: level 21 craft (woodworking, tattooing and callygraphy) 24 Choose one epic totem from the list of epic totems. You can transform a willing supplicant to gain the benefits of a part of an aspect of the Seldarine. Totemic magic scrolls of ancient times speak of rituals done at great peril to green elf societies. These scrolls speak of bloody sacrifices and mortals wielding powers of gods. Epic totemic magic is capable of harnessing spiritual and divine power to change elvish supplicants into divine vessels. The supplicant has to willingly perform a bloodsacrifice (sometimes effectively killing the subject) to transform into a limited avatar or aspect with certain powers as seen in avatars of the Seldarine. The ritual usually take at least 4 hours of enscribing runes and 4 hours of collective meditation of at least 7 totemspeakers. After this the supplicant becomes an aspect for 1 day, and after the transformation is present on the ethereal as well as the material plane for 48 hours of uninterupted reverie. After the transformation the elfs soul still resides in their body but the body itself is infused with spirit stuff (incarnum) so its not tangible enough. Its effectively an incorporeal ghost, so existing both in the ethereal and the material planes. After this period is resolved without stress the soul cleanses the semi-divine residues of incarnum. If interupted he vanishes to remote or secret locations in the domains of their totem god. |

| MerrikCale09-11-07, 08:15 PM | -I'm going to link this thread to Elves of Faerūn, under the Totemic Magic section. the what? |
| Lord Karsus09-12-07, 11:43 AM | -I like the system. Let me just make sure I am getting it all correct, though. Basically, you take the feat, and then have access to whatever totems you choose. You then can carve these rune totems unlimitedly, providing there is enough time to do so, of course. The caster also has full access to his/her Divine magic spells as well. |
| Suin Bahhar09-12-07, 11:59 AM | Yes, that's all correct. Time is of the essence. The duration of the supernatural effects are mostly day long. Maybe I should add a line with a rule that removes all magic effects at dawn or dusk instead. A characters regular casting or combat skills remain the same. Reactivating a rune is done by recrafting it. Recrafting to activate a totem rune doesn't actually make a new totem object or tattoo but the process takes just as long and expends the same amount of materials. Having a few totems keeps the characters from tattooing their whole bodies as their morning rituals extend when more runes are needed to activate. |
| Suin Bahhar12-15-07, 07:35 PM | Added some epic totems and the Spirt Guide totemic feat. The special totem that bonds strongly to some green elves at birth. |
| Lord Karsus12-16-07, 01:09 PM | Added some epic totems and the Spirt Guide totemic feat. The special totem that bonds strongly to some green elves at birth. -I like the Epic Totems. Some good stuff. But, I don't necessarily think that they should vanish after "transformation". That sounds good from a storytelling point of view, but that doesn't sound so great from a game playing point of view. Perhaps they go into a catatonic slumber, or something to that effect, for a limited time. That allows the player to keep his character around, but forces him/her to stay "out of bounds" for a while, while he/she recovers. |
| Suin Bahhar12-16-07, 01:51 PM | Yeah, the vansihing aspect is harsh. But I want the use of epic totems to be a real last resort type of thing. The instances I read about Totem spirits possesing mortals they were eventually consumed by the process. It's not something you want to use on your loved ones or relatives but it still is a great honor. It also captures the savageness of green elves when compared to regular elves. |
| Lord Karsus12-16-07, 01:55 PM | Yeah, the vansihing aspect is harsh. But I want the use of epic totems to be a real last resort type of thing. -Yeah, I understand that, and I'd want to reflect that too. But, at the same time, if you know that using those specific totems is basically suicide (or, at least, the end of your character for the time being), why bother taking the feat to use the Totem, you know? |
| Suin Bahhar12-16-07, 02:24 PM | Hmm. Good point. A half fading of the body into the ethereal for (and an uninterupted reverie of) 48 hours should bring the supplicant back then. Elves with lower than 13 con get consumed in the process though. Oh and most of the time very young adult elves are used as supplicants. As experience is useless in a Totem form (even mental stats are the same as the MM entry). So a community of green elves usually use the epic totem aspects they know if the community is cornered with no way out. Letting the young aspect lead them in a hunt, war or quest for new grounds. |

Letting the young aspect lead them in a hunt, war or quest for new grounds. -That sounds good. Instead of the Etheral though, it should probably be Arvandor, with the connection to Elves and everything. Depending on the Epic Form used, the Elf in question goes to that deity's domain. |

Depending on the Epic Form used, the Elf in question goes to that deity's domain. I would if change the planes the supplicant risk of being lost in if I knew the names of the particular domains within Arvandor. |

I would if change the planes the supplicant risk of being lost in if I knew the names of the particular domains within Arvandor. -They can all be found in the religion section of Elves of Faerūn. |
