| Slad Chaos04-29-07, 01:20 PM | Hello, are there a spell that permit to disenchant a magic item to transfer XP used to create this item and use this XP to create a new magic item ? If yes, what spell, in what book, please ? Thanks for your future help. |
| createvmind04-29-07, 01:57 PM | XP in game terms is mental and physical exertion needed to create scroll, item, etc........ There is no getting it back or transferring it. |
| Slad Chaos04-29-07, 02:09 PM | You didn't understand my question. It is from a magic item to create an other magic item. |
| createvmind04-29-07, 02:18 PM | I did understand your question, the XP used to create anything is not "stored" within the item, it's used up. Just like when you use a scroll, the user of the scroll doesn't gain the XP that the scroll creator had to expend to create scroll. So the item you wish to disenchant has no XP in it, it is a magic item plain and simple. |
| Slad Chaos04-29-07, 02:33 PM | I search a similar spell as the class ability artificer from Eberron. |
| createvmind04-29-07, 02:56 PM | never played Ebboron, this Faerun forum, maybe they have a fix in Ebberon forum. |
| Slad Chaos04-29-07, 03:05 PM | I know that it is the Faerun forum. I'm trying to explain you that I search. |
| Alac Luin04-29-07, 04:10 PM | The Eberron Artificer class ability of "retain essence" is unique. There is no known (at least to me) way to duplicate it. |
| createvmind04-29-07, 06:38 PM | They are able to transfer XP in Ebberon? |
| Alac Luin04-29-07, 06:53 PM | It is the Artificer class feature called "Retain Essence". The Artificer is the "master magic item builder". How it works... Artificer grabs a magic item, say a +4 Belt of Giant Strength. which cost 16,000 gp and needed 640 XP to create. using this class feature, and spending a day to do such, the artificer drains all the magic from this item (it is now simply a masterwork belt). The 640 XP it took to create the item are placed in something called a "craft reserve". The Artificer can now use those "craft reserve" points to create other magic items before spending real XP in item creation. In no way does it directly boost actual XP totals. And the craft reserve "re-sets" when gaining levels, so those 640 points must be used before the Artificer level-ups. EDIT: The way I see this "fluff wise", the Artificer learns new tricks/insights about item creation from "deconstrucing" (unraveling the threads of) the magic that they can apply to their next project. This knowledge is short lived. Others may see this differently fluff wise. |
| Red_Wizard04-30-07, 11:01 AM | I don't begrudge Ebberon for this class, but I have often wondered why, in the realms long history, with all the risen and fallen Magical civilizations, why a similar, or identical class was not created here first. |

I've had similiar thoughts, I remember reading somewhere(LEOF??) that the Imaskari were called "artificers" or some such. I'm toying with the idea of the Deep Imaskari having artificers among their number and being the only ones on Faerun....just a thought. |
| Murmur Maelstrom05-13-07, 08:11 PM | Hello, are there a spell that permit to disenchant a magic item to transfer XP used to create this item and use this XP to create a new magic item ? If yes, what spell, in what book, please ? Thanks for your future help. In Volo's Guide to All Things Magical (true, this was a 2nd edition spell) there was a spell called Blood Link. This spell enabled a wizard of dubious alignment to steal the Constitution point from another that was required to create a magical item. Now, although this spell was created for 2nd edition, I think that it might be possible to do something similar in 3rd Edition. Blood Link was a 7th level spell. A 7th level spell may be able to steal XP from another being, and like the Artificer character class, store it for magic item creation only. Now, as for your original question.... Nothing is impossible with magic. That being said, the DM must decide if they will allow it or not... and perhaps a 8th or 9th level spell would be required... Cheers, MM |
| Zsych05-16-07, 03:12 PM | Steal XP from an item and put it in another. Thinking about it... that XP loss(loss of magical ability of the caster.. sorta) might have become the magical energy that allows the item to function. Might be possible to transform it(wouldn't expect it to be a loss-less process). Going by the epic rules, where another caster can help make an epic item. It may be possible to steal power from an existing item to make another. (But I think that it might require that you be creating an epic item) ... or you could work to develop/find/buy a spell/item that allows existing items to be used in such a way. I'd go with an item/artifact for such a purpose(and probably limit the amount of XP extracted, and the max extractable (.. percentage of total required)... and maybe only let an item be used in the process once(so that artifacts don't become a perpetual battery)) |
| Ramenth05-16-07, 05:59 PM | I've always just added this ability in campains for my crafters, to be honnest. I see it as a way of taking the energy from one item and using it to aid in the crafting of another. We dont generally get the full experience back from the deconstruction, but we get enough to make crafting the new item less of a burden. the ammount lost depends on what the new item made is; The more similar the new item is to the deconstructed item, the more exp that carries over. |
| Flinx5805-25-07, 08:26 PM | There is a PrC called the Recalibrator, I thinks its for artificers and on Save-VS-DM's page does exactly that. And there used to be a spell that allowed you to do something like that, which I thought was totally cool. But I cant think of its name, though all all it does is tranphere enchantments from one item to another. <shrug> My two cents. |
| Karsus the Mad05-26-07, 06:37 PM | There's the Epic Arcane Artisan, found at http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/ei/20030314a That can cannibalize magic items in order to provide XP for creating new items. |
