| kharstin05-07-07, 11:51 AM | I play an 12th level gnome illusionist and our party is about to embark upon a section of the adventure where we will be underwater for a long period of time. Having never played in an underwater adventure, can anyone give me any advice on what spells seem to be the most effective in underwater combat? Thanks! Kharstan |
| Stigger05-07-07, 12:33 PM | Not terribly sure offhand, but if you can find it, I'd recommend taking a look at Stormwrack for some ideas. |
| Ramenth05-07-07, 12:59 PM | Off hand? Something along the lines of Magic Missile or other spells that don't rely on damage types likely to be effected by the water. |
| Dielzen05-07-07, 03:50 PM | You might get better answers in the generic DnD section of the forums over the FR section, but I can attempt to provide a couple ideas. Stormwrack, Stormwrack, Stormwrack...there ya go, 3 ideas. (Oh, and make sure your DM doesn't rule that freedom of movement makes you free fall to the bottom of the ocean and kill you before you cast it) |
| Empirate05-08-07, 11:47 AM | Damn, you beat me to Freedom of Movement! It's one of the most important spells in underwater combat, IMHO. Otherwise, if I were the DM (not having read Stormwrack, though), I'd rule that electricity effects are enlarged, widened and maybe empowered in salt water. I'd furthermore rule out fire spells (duh!). Invisibility is a no-no underwater, as you can see the outline of the invisible creature. Oh, and Wall of Ice and other ice-based spells are fun, as ice is lighter than water and tends to float upward pretty quickly! Try to trap your opponent in a cold-substituded fireball and watch him float, frozen in an iceberg! BTW, you'd probably need silent spell, as most normal people I know, even those able to breather water, can't speak while fully submerged. Now if you play a whale, that might be different... |
| Lady_Mhaor05-08-07, 04:05 PM | heres a good combo spell Cast elemental protection(or whatever is close to it) and then lightning bolt everything or dimensional gate them a fireball and boil them alive >.< or cast hold person/monster on them and send the to the crushing deep cuz that how I roll |
| Steropes05-12-07, 07:43 AM | --I'd rule that electricity effects are enlarged, widened and maybe empowered in salt water. I'd furthermore rule out fire spells (duh!).-- I'd ad that lightning effects does damage to ALL around the caster(even the caster him/her self) so that makes it rather useless if you havent cast protection from it. The fire damage can be made in under water: the water boils rather quickly. (Perhaps with reduced damage[I'd say 80%]). Allso dispell magic can be leathal to creatures that can't breath in water without Water Breathing. |
| Lady_Mhaor05-12-07, 09:33 AM | aye but they also have to problem of suffocating :P boiling/heating water takes the oxygen out of it and.. nvm screw chemistry or u can illusion up a kraken, scare just about anything |
