Suin Bahhar 10-20-07, 04:37 PM	A character of mine found his way to the planes by abduction by a nighthag. He claimed to have the fastest swordarm of the Sword Coast (fighter2/rogue5/streetfighter1 with springattack, imp feint and quickdraw wielding the Flametongue). He got tricked by the hag in a beautiful blond farmgirl form, stripped naked and locked in a room with a one way portal to the Barrens of Doom and Despair. He stepped through and is now wandering the bleak and dark terrain disguised as a haraknin (a lesser canomorph) he managed to defeat barehanded. So portals make a good way of traveling to the planes for non spellcaters. Another option is highjacking a planar travelling creature.

Suin Bahhar 10-21-07, 04:49 PM	Have a planar anomaly happen on the road the party is walking, like a tear in the fabric of reality suddenly capturing the players unaware or a planar void sucking them into astral tunnel. You could bring the plane to the players by having a plane overlap a prime and for example shifting the landscape gradually from a hilly grassland to the snowy hell of Cania by means of a powerfull artifect in possesion of Mephistopheles or some other hellish duke.

Kurzon 10-21-07, 05:32 PM	You could commission a spellcaster to craft you an item that casts [i]plane shift[i] for you. Alternatively, you could search for information about portals to Sigil. Sigil regularly creates portals at various locations throughout the planes. The trouble is, these portals are rarely permanent and each requires a "key" (ie some special action to activate it). Sigil is like the hub of the multiverse.
Shemeska the Marauder 10-25-07, 01:40 AM	Many portals and elemental vortices are naturally occuring things. Portals may or may not have a key to activate them, but might be randomly stumbled across or detected by magic. Portals to Sigil can appear literally anywhere in existance within a bound space, and there are several known portals to/from Sigil on Toril. And once you're in Sigil, you can effectively go anywhere on the planes. Elemental vortices tend to connect between various elemental or energy plane and places on the prime material where their respective influence is most noted (positive energy vortices might appear in the heart of Toril's sun, the depths of the sea would have vortices to Elemental Water, volcanos might connect to Elemental Fire, etc)

Dimensional_Drifter 10-25-07, 10:58 PM	Yeah, you wouldn't have to be a spellcaster. Portals are common enough, although any permanent or stationary portal which has a known location will no doubt be guarded by someone or something I would think. As said before, inner planes can be reached in areas like volcanos, the sun, the center of tornados etc. but without magic, I don't think one would survive getting to an inner plane that way, and besides they are inhospitable. Ah, but one could get from Toril to another plane many ways but just about any would need magic of a sort, but no one said you must be a spellcaster.

The "Migration gates" that the gods/overgods used to move creatures back and forth between Crystal Spheres, Realms,Planes and Dimensions actually still exist everywhere in the multiverse though finding the gates, then the keys to open them and then the destination gate is a major under taking. There would be a "Crystal gate" for about every 3000 square miles on a planet like Toril though likely they would be buried in the Underdark, buried in one of the taller peaks or even buried in the Great Glacier Unfortunately, without a key (looks like a tuning fork) the Gate is solid "Crystal" which only turns into a open portal when the correct key is struck against it to make the tone that opens it. on the other side is a "grey space" that must be traversed to the desired gate that isn't totally safe as Creatures live in the "Land beyond" between the "Crystal Gates" lot of them that would prey on not properly armed or protected travelers. Basically you walk in the "land beyond" focused on where you want to go and eventually the gate will show up in minutes, days, weeks, months, or even years depending on where you are heading (and lack of focus leads nowhere if not to a gate elsewhere...lol). The reached gate would be of "Solid Crystal" until the proper key is struck on it. A Drawback,even if you got the keys and make it to the correct gate, is that since the Gates are ancient in the extreme there is a chance the destination gate is impassibly blocked by ice,earth,rock,Lava,water,etc and without magic or technology to save you, you could be suddenly buried under 500 feet of dirt or embedded in solid rock There are "Master Keys" that can open any gate and they to might be mistaken for "tuning forks" that are used to tune pianos and such....maybe even pulled out of a ruin near Waterdeep and kept as an interesting trinket by a Adventurer that retired there not knowing that there was a mysterious "Crystal Monolith" buried 25 feet beneath it in volcanic soot. Just Saying
