Is it some form of radiation, a type of rock or both? In the Underdark they refer to it as radiation, but in Storm of the Dead they refer to the stones glowing.

In the older lore it was some type of naturally occuring "radiation" (I don't mean that in any real world scientific sense, btw). As per Storm of the Dead, it was residue from elven High Magic that was meant to attract drow to the Underdark and keep them there.

-Everything Rino said is true. To further elaborate...

-The term comes from the Elven words Faer and Z'ress, which mean 'Magic' and 'To Hold Dominance/To Remain in Force'. Combined, the term means '‘Magic that Remained/Dominating Magic/Magic that Compelled’. Originally, Faerzress' were a type of naturally recurring magical radiation that existed in the Underdark. However, Storm of the Dead included a retcon that tied Faerzress' to the Descent of the Drow. In the new story, Faerzress' were created by the Elven Selu'Taar who cursed the Drow, as a way to keep them 'stuck' in the Underdark. The High Magic forced the Drow to want to stay near areas of Faerzress'. The old explanation for this was that Faerzress' were areas of power, and could enchant weapons with their natural magical auras (Drowcraft items), and because of this, the Drow jealously guarded them.

So, that book turned a very cool magical radiation into 'catnip' for Drow? :uh-huh:

I must be sure to avoid that novel at all costs... :nonono:

Did she win the pool at WotC for 'silliest ret-con', at least?
VengefulGazeofGod

01-10-08, 06:59 PM
No, the silliest retcon would have to be the idea that my deities are just names that I give human gods.
That idea could start a holy war and human god heads will roll and in the aftermath the humans will have no further choice but to worship the elven pantheon.

01-14-08, 11:58 PM
Yeah, it's sad that WotC has to resort to disfiguring existing lore just to bring out 'new' materials. Examples of disfigured Realm elements:
- Netheril
- Drow society/pantheon
- Myth Drannor
- The Crown Wars
- The outer planes

So, we have 5 monthsl left before 4ed comes out and destroy what's left of the increasingly lame FR (which has become a revive-the-dead galore).

for some reason it works for me just fine as Drow Fly-Paper that had some unintended effects (doesn't Elven High Magic always seem to?).

Can Faerzress be destroyed?
MarkusTay63

01-23-08, 02:16 AM
I think it can be 'repressed', by spells like Disjunction, or an anti-magic field, but I don't 'think' there's anyway of permanently destroying it.
Lord Karsus

01-23-08, 06:53 AM

-No, it does not seem that Faerzress' can be destroyed. They're too useful to destroy, anyway.

I've never played Faerzress as drownip, just said that it's that useful that everyone's attracted to it.

And didn't it also create the Underdark?

-I took that as more metaphorical, as it lead to the Drow being introduced into the Underdark, and in turn, the Drow did a lot of colonizing of the wilds down there.

-I think that the Faerzress was intended to imprison the Drow like the FeyRi were imprisoned in the Nameless Dungeon. Or at least the Elves learned their lesson after the Descent of the Drow. Think about it, what tempted the Sun Elves of that house to become 1/2fiends. Maybe they saw the power that the Dark Elves got. And they they started to lust after said power. The Last Mythal said that they could do High Magic by them selves, and not have to rely on an order of mages. Very Tempting if you ask me.:D

-Not all Elven High Magic rituals require a Circle. Rituals of Solitude are High Magic Spells that can be cast by a single Selu'Taar. Rituals of Myriad and Rituals of Compliment require a Circle of Selu'Taar. Certain individuals, such as Queen Amlauril, or Araevin Teshurr, or the wielder of the Ruler's Blade, have the ability to cast Rituals of Myriad and Rituals of Compliment by themselves.

Faerzress can fade, such as around Sshamath, so I'm sure one could find a way to destroy it by accelerating this seemingly natural process. Everyone in the Underdark wants it, though, because it's useful, so why bother?

-No exactly. The special ritual that Araevin cast allows him to cast Rituals of Compliment and Myriad by himself. Ordinary Half-Fiends or Half-Celestials can't do that.

I should have been a little more clear when I started this thread, and in my last question.

When I stated is it possible to destroy Faerzress what I was wondering if as drownip the removal of Faerzress would cause strife among the drow.

Also can Faerzress be "mined"? It works as a divination and teleport blocker. It sounds like something useful for people who do not want to be found in the world above.
MarkusTay63

01-24-08, 02:42 AM
I don't know if it would cause strife it were removed, because plenty of Drow operate just fine away from it (as of 3e). I would say 'yes' to the mining of it, but Drow stiil use Faerzress Nodes to 'cook' special drow-only items. Toward the end of 2e, those special items became pseudo-magical in nature, just like the magical items from Netheril. Unlike the Netherese items, though, they do not require being near a mythallar, but rather being near a Faerzress zone to function.

So, considering many of the Drow that never leave their cities (which is 99% of them) rely on the radiation, I think any attempts at removing it would be met with VERY stiff resistance.

-WTF is that smiley doing!?It does look strange, but it's supposed to be patting the other one's head.

Meant the drow casting it. But whatever they cast, it wasn't a single elf spell.

you can explain this allways this way: not the drow cast it but the ancient miyrietar dark elfs that where in the kiira , i read it this way that they taked possesion of qyarlynd and his fellows and castet the spell

-If you are looking for continuity in the Lady Penitent series, don't- Lisa Smedman throws the rules out the window. Drow, for example, cannot cast Elven High Magic. Elven High Magic isn't written on scrolls. A deity isn't allowed to enter into the Realm of another deity without his/her/its permission. Faerzress' aren't rocks. :nonono:

Not really, I haven't read Archwizards, Last Mythal, or any Lady Penitent, but from being on these boards I know pretty much what I need to know about the events. ;)

-I say the same thing about comic books, but you miss the little subtleties that aren't part of the driving story, but are there none the less. Like, for instance, are you aware of the back and forh between Vala, Galaeron Nimhedu, and Takiri Moonstar in the Return of the Archwizards trilogy, and how that is ultimatley resolved? You miss stuff like that.

I had to take your life

.What exactly is Faerzress?

Isn't it those red fluffy things on the stupid hats the Shrinners wear? (drumbeat after bad joke)

Actually it is sorta like a Weave "feedback" as it was also effected by Mystra's death during the Time of Troubles the way true Psionics in native Torillians were when her essence merged with the land.

best proper description would be more like a "Mythallar" but naturally occurring and the Drow learned to make semi and quasi magical items powered by it.
