| Turin7109-12-07, 08:17 AM | I'm working on a beguiler who uses the shadow weave and has ties to Shar through his past. I'm using the information on the Class Chronicles for Beguilers posted here some months ago. In that article it mentioned Shar temples had expelled the beguilers after revealing the existance of the Shadow Weave. Being that the main purpose of the Beguilers was to conceal its existance, their use was no longer necesary. So my question is, when did this happend? How long ago was it? |

Afterwards word would have spread among circles of those learned in the Art or in opposition to the machinations of Shar across of the rest of Faerūn. Prior to this period knowledge of its existence would likely have only been known to those who wielded it, namely to high ranking members of Shar's clergy, isolated arcane cabals or practitioners, and obviously the upper class of Thultanthar (Shade). Mystra's Chosen became fully aware of the Shadow Weave over the course of 1371 DR-1372 DR, with confrontations with either the Shades or cabals of Shadow Adepts in the Dire Wood, Shadowdale, Thultanthar, and Velprintalar (see Return of the Archwizards trilogy and Elminster in Hell). Prior to that Elminster was only slightly aware of a dark source of magic--that was not the Weave of Mystra--and which corrupted those who wielded it, including the mage who slew his parents. In addition, in 1368 DR Shar used Halaster Blackcloak, and a Faerūn-wide cabal under his command, as part of a plot to (at least attempt to) steal silver fire from the Seven Sisters (see Silverfall). It is my assumption that the silver fire and/or the Karsestone, either separately or together, may have been necessary tools for Shar to stabilize or empower the Shadow Weave enough for her to fully reveal it....as in it may not have been complete or fully capable of supporting magic Faerūn-wide outside of the few who knew of it’s existence. In turn, during that same period other magical organizations tied to regions surrounding Anarouch or otherwise involved in the conflict would have discerned the existence or nature of the Shadow Weave. Such would include the War Wizards of Cormyr, the High Mages of Evereska, the Harpers, the Phaerimm, and the Lords of Waterdeep. In 1372 DR a wizard of Waterdeep named Aluvauna Thornym discerned the nature of the Shadow Weave by defeating a Zhentarim wizard whose spells were difficult to dispel, detect, and counter. After some research, studies of his spellbook, and some divinations she discovered the source of his magic. With the consent of the Church of Mystra (and participation from other deities of magic or opposed to Shar) she founded the Guardians of the Weave (see Champions of Valor), an organization dedicated to fighting the abuse of magic by evil and the threat to the true weave posed by Shar's machinations. |

WOW, thanks for great info. |
| Turin7109-13-07, 08:57 AM | Well, you are the Simbul so I guess you should know :) |
| Karsus the Mad09-13-07, 10:22 AM | But that said, it's existed longer than that goind back to the events in Chessenta in the novel Shadow Stone and even earlier than that, but that information would have only been known by Shar's secretive followers. Also the short story in Realms of Shadow. Telemont/Shadow and others were experimenting with the Shadow Weave while living on Karsus's Enclave. I get the impression that at least the city authorities knew of the Shadow Weave, but that it still remained relatively unknown. |
