| Yxunomei03-30-07, 02:58 AM | I'm just wondering here. Divine spells (including druidic spells) in FR must stem from a divine power, that much seems certain. Despite what the Ice Lich Lossarym may claim (that he's getting his spells from nature itself), it would seem a patron deity (possibly even one giving you spells from behind the scenes) is required. But what about the other powers of a druid? Shapeshifting, telepathy with animals, timeless body, elemental shapes... do those come from a special font of druidic lore or are they too provided to the druid by his/her/its patron deity? More specifically, my fellow players and I are wondering what would happen to a druid if the druid's divine patron cuts their spell supply off (either by a gross violation of the druidic tenets of by the death of the deity)? Would they lose their ability to shapeshift? Would their bodies start to age? Would a transmuter/shifter PRC draw their shapeshifting abilities from a different font than a druid/shifter PRC? Sorry for the bombardment of questions but I think this could make for an interesting discussion. |

Personally, I strongly disagree with the latter part, since (Ex) abilities are by definition non-magical abilities, and I fail to see how losing faith in your god suddenly makes you forget what you learned about nature and survival. Granted, abilities such as Venom Immunity and Timeless Body seem to be labeled (Ex) for gameplay reasons rather than to imply they're something the druid simply learns to do on his own accord, but considering that monks are able to learn those very same abilities, I for one really would have no problem letting a fallen druid keep them. In other words, while the rules are clear that a fallen druid loses all the druidic abilities, for the sake of consistency I suggest limiting the loss to magical abilities only and let the druid keep all (Ex) abilities, including animal companion. |
| Borris03-30-07, 07:08 AM | My friends and I always considered that a druid's supernatural abilities come from the same source as his divine spells. Consider the following quote from the PHB: "A druid who wears prohibited armor or carries a prohibited shield is unable to cast druid spells or use any of her supernatural or spell-like class abilities while doing so and for 24 hours thereafter." Surprisingly enough, though, as druid's supernatural and spell-like abilities omnly includes Wild Shape and A Thousand Faces. Everything else is extraordinary. On the other hand: "A druid who ceases to revere nature, changes to a prohibited alignment, or teaches the Druidic language to a nondruid loses all spells and druid abilities (including her animal companion)." So it seems there are two degrees of violation for a druid's code of conduct. Minor infraction will only cost you your spells and wild shapes, and only for a few hours. Ceasing to revere nature, however, will make you little more than a NPC class. A gross violation of the druidic tenets is obviously a case of the second type, so the character would lose everything. The death of the deity is more sketchy, but as long as the druid keeps proper reverence for nature, I'd be lenient and simply cut the spells and wild shapes until the character either receives an atonement spell, in order to accept another deity as his patron, or takes a feat such as Servant of the Fallen. |
