Which deity represents metallic Dragons? [Archive] - Wizards Community

06-10-07, 08:00 AM I recently bought Faiths and Pantheons and after reading thoroughly I couldn't find any entry about a deity similar to Bahamut or Paladine (as in the Basic and Dragonlance pantheons respectively).

Also, in PGtF the Dragon's Eyrie only has Realms for Hlal, Null, Task and Tiamat.

So, do all metallic dragons worship any random good deity? Should I just pop Bahamut in the Faerunian Pantheon or would that change the balance of deific power?

Or is there any mention in any other campaign setting book that i do not own yet?

06-10-07, 08:11 AM Bahamut does exist in the Realms, though for a long time he has been very quiet. The Dracorage trilogy and Dragons Of Faerun make more mention of him in recent novels/sourcebooks. The 2e FR book Draconomicon also says more from the older perspective.

In the distant past, Bahamut was (also) known as Marduk the Justice-Bringer of the Untheric pantheon (as an alias or a deity he merged with), who battled Tiamat (also of the Untheric pantheon).

After that, both were weakened, and Bahamut was simply a powerful dragon, just as Tiamat was an archdevil. His role as deity went to Xymor, who seems to have also been Bahamut. Now he is Bahamut, and is mainly active in Damara.

It's all very complicated. :)

To make a long story short, my players want to travel to his realm for a specific quest. So, do i just pop a "bahamut" realm in Dragon Eyrie? Where can I find this "Xymor"?

And WHY DID I CHOOSE FAERUN IN THE FIRST PLACE :rant: :banghead: :censored: :hoppingma ??

06-10-07, 08:20 AM While I haven't read Dragons of Faerun (whether the Bahamut business is discussed at length), I think it would be perfectly safe to place his realm in the Dragon Eyrie, since he definitely does exist in the Realms.

It would be perfectly safe to use Bahamut , since scaled deities tend to break apart and re-assemble at will. So, if Xymor and Bahamut are the same, then you can just consider the 'earthly' Bahamut a wayward Avatar that Xymor just hasn't re-absorbed yet.

The Marduk thing is a little strange; I myself was unaware of that. Marduk probably absorbed the biblical Behemmoth from which 'Bahamut' is derived. Leviathan, scholars have found, is just a bad Latin translation of 'Tiamet', which was used to represent some 'great scaled monster' in the Bible. Not that that has anything to do with your question, but I always find the relationships between mythos interesting.

06-10-07, 05:47 PM Metalic dragons would typically worship one of 3 deities. Bahamut, Hlal or Null. Bahamut is LG, his divine realm is a palace that can travel between planes, but is often found in the layer of Mercuria on Mount Celestia in the House of Nature when it is not in Dragon Eyrie. There may in fact be a soft border between the two planes that allows travel between them.

Bahamut has a couple of aliases, he goes by Xymor, and in the Old Empires region he is known by Marduk. Marduk was actually once a human god in the Untheric pantheon that was (if I recall correctly) slain during the Orcgate wars. Bahamut took over the alias and now grants prayers in his name to Marduk's clergy. In his Marduk guise Bahamut is worshiped by a primarily human laity.

Hlal is a chaotic good dragon of humor, trickery, and creativity. Hlal lives in Dragon Eyrie. Hlal is a lot of fun and is revered by artistic and playful dragons.

Null is a lawful neutral deity of fate, death, and final judgment. He is the guardian of the draconic dead. I halfway suspect that he once held the roll of steward of the Fugue Plane, that Kelemvor now holds, back some 31 to 25 thousand years ago when dragons held dominion over Faerūn. Null is very serious and is worshiped by the more serious metallic dragons, especially the goth types. ;)

There are a few more dragon gods that have not been heard from in some time. They may still be around, they might have perished from lack of worship, or they may have died during the Time of Troubles, or have been eaten/absorbed by Tiamat in her recent rise to power.

Lendys, a LN god of balance and justice (and the father of Xymor).
Tamara, a NG goddess of light, life, mercy and forgiveness (and mother of Xymor)
Kereska, a CN god of draconic magic (possibly a draconic alias of Mystryl or the previous Mystra, may now be deceased).
Asgorath, TN god of creation, (an avatar of Io, may have been killed by the act of creating the dragon race in the Realms, unclear if he/she still has any presence in the Realms).

There are some other evil dragon gods, but since they would not be worshiped by metallic dragons, I will refrain from mentioning them here.
