| faellamos06-02-07, 11:17 AM | I was bored, so thought id fart around on the forums. Here's a good one: If u were a mage in real life, which magic school would u specialise in and why? I would be a Transmuter for sure. not only do u get to fly and polymorph but u get spells that r just plain usefull in a practical sense. Bull's Strength and Greater Magic Weapon are the best spells ever; stoneskin, haste, telekinesis... so many great spells and so varied, im not sure but i think transmutation has the largest number of spells in it- according to the Spell Compendium neway. |
| GothicDan06-02-07, 11:52 AM | I ultimately love too many schools to specialize. I love necromancers, evokers, conjurers, diviners, enchanters... Basically everything but illusionists. So if I HAD to specialize, I'd choose Divination and ban Illusion. |
| XHereticX06-02-07, 01:20 PM | Necromancy or Evocation. Illusion i like as well. |
| The_Shaman06-02-07, 01:32 PM | Probably illusion. It is quite useful at times, and the shadow spells can be extremely handy if you must choose schools to ban. |
| Zevox06-02-07, 01:38 PM | Abjuration - better to use magic for defense. Ban... oh, probably Enchantment (no desire to mind-control anyone) and Necromancy (power over life and death? I'll leave that the priests). But then, if I were an arcane magic-user, I'd probably be an Arcane Devotee of Tyr, so this would be pretty predictable. Zevox |
| Lord_Steve06-02-07, 01:40 PM | Evocation....Definitely be useful as a Soldier.....Mmmmmm |
| Drew1369r06-02-07, 03:18 PM | Id have be a Nimbral Mage... specialist in Illusions but not denied access to other schools :) Illusions are my favorite... but I like the other ones just as much |
| Meldread06-02-07, 03:44 PM | Muhahaha! What would I do if I were a mage in real life? Oh my! Screw specialization. It is a good idea in the short term, but is not so great in the long term. Magical items and spells can make up for the short coming. No, I would focus on all magic - I would devote my entire existence to the acquisition of power. I will hide such impulses until I am powerful enough to defend myself against rivals. I'll strive to stay in isolation, as to not gain enemies. This isolation will be gained through the creation of my own demi-plane. This plane would be warded against intruders and all forms of outside divination. The plane itself will operate like the Astral Plane, requiring no sleep or sustenance while within it. This will allow me to work endlessly toward my ultimate goal: Lichdom. Once I have created my phylactery it will be a simple grain of sand hidden among countless grains of sand within my plane, which will be an arabian paradise. The phylactery will be impervious to any form of detection ensuring that it will be impossible to find - should an enemy actually set foot onto my plane. ...and it is then that the fun begins. I will then return to the prime and begin kidnapping young wizards who have the potential to be the greatest wizards in all of Toril. I will then mindrape them to ensure that they worship me as a god, taking endless precaution to ensure their absolute loyalty and obedience. I will even create new spells to further enslave their mind and protect my magic from being unraveled. I will also kidnap the most beautiful people I can find, enslaving them as well with magic. They will serve as entertainment to my guests and myself. They'll be taught tricks for my amusement, and because they will never age, thirst or starve - will be immortal. Perfectly beautiful, perfect forever, and nothing more than simple pets that hang upon my every word. I will teach my apprentice wizards, grow their power and send them to the Prime to bring back more and more power and knowledge, more artifacts, more things that I desire... in effect I will have created myself my own kingdom from which I rule, uncontested, where I can study the arcane at my immortal leisure and enjoy every pleasure and vice imaginable. Oh, and of course I'll use transmutation magic to give myself the perfect body. After all it is not as if I want to walk around looking like a rotting corpse. What can I say? Power corrupts, and absolute power corrupts absolutely. :P |
| Karsus the Mad06-02-07, 04:14 PM | You want a job?:) Me, well, I'm a mentalist. |
| Old Sage06-02-07, 08:12 PM | Specialisation is always a difficult choice. And it's not one that I think I could make definitively -- as there are many schools I actually enjoy. If pressed however, I'd say Divination, mostly. If I'm feeling particularly evil, then Necromancy. |
| MaskedOne06-02-07, 08:19 PM | I dislike specialization on a good day. However if forced, Abjuration, don't know what I'd ban. Transmutation and Divination would definitely not be banned but after that, don't know. Mostly though, I go generalist with a touch extra focus in Abjuration |
| Fabius Maximus06-02-07, 08:54 PM | Psychoportation. Call me Hiro. ;) Another abjurer here. It's much more elegant to manipulate the magical energies themselves, unravelling the knots in the weave, sometimes even while they are being tied by another arcanist. Getting rid of Enchantment and Illusion. The schools are exactly that kind of stuff I'd fight to prevent and protect against. |
| Sir Percival the Gallant06-02-07, 09:08 PM | Enchantment. I like people with taste. |
| Lady_Mhaor06-02-07, 09:34 PM | the one that lets me throw fireballs and lightning bolts indiscriminately at the population |
| faellamos06-03-07, 11:04 AM | Forgot about the prohibited school :P I'd ban illusion for sure. There's something written in Complete Mage about how Transmuters have little use for illusions because they cause actual changes in the world rather than fake ones, a sentiment i totally agree with. |
| captaincarot06-03-07, 02:11 PM | got to agree with meldread. can't see any reason to specialise when the combination of the whole is far more powerfull in the longrun. would anyone really cut off their left arm in order to force themselves to be better at weilding a sword with their right hand. |
| Zevox06-03-07, 02:49 PM | would anyone really cut off their left arm in order to force themselves to be better at weilding a sword with their right hand. Not, but they may choose to never learn to fight with their left hand in order to be better at doing so with their right. Zevox |
| captaincarot06-03-07, 02:53 PM | Not, but they may choose to never learn to fight with their left hand in order to be better at doing so with their right. Zevox so what happens to them then if they get their right hand bitten off by a dragon! |
| Steropes06-03-07, 05:15 PM | Inventive in old days or divinations later days. I don't know which I'd ban and I would not specialise if I could decide. But in the end it is beter to be Thayan diviner (and one of the red wizards) than Thayan commoner... |
| Meldread06-03-07, 05:37 PM | "Specialization is not defined by what you know, but what you do not know." ~So sayeth the intellectually superior Meldread, the narcissistic arcanist |
| Fenhorn06-07-07, 02:01 AM | Necromancy, is there any other? No, seriously, I love Illusionism (no matter what game I play), it's just so me. |
| ShadezofDis06-07-07, 11:02 AM | I'd be hard pressed to decide between divination (let's play in the stock market!) or conjuration (why do anything when you can get something else to do it?) Though, really, all the schools would be pretty useful. haha, I just thought about the uses of divination in school, I'd probably play the stock market then go get a few masters ;) |
| Zombieslayer06-07-07, 11:51 AM | Stay generalist FTW |
