There's a few tidbits in the timeline for the city of Westgate (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/we/20010327d) that's included as part of the "web enhancement" for Cloak & Dagger.

Note also that there are 2 sets of Seven Lost Gods. The OLDER set includes Borem, Tyranthraxus, etc. Only five of that set are named.

-So, it seems that Haask, Voice of Hargut was a deity of terror, madness, plague and pestilance of some sort, then.

[QUOTETyranthraxus the Flamed One[/QUOTE]

What happened to him, exactly? I was looking in my games recently and I got a nostalgia trip with Pool of Radiance. Wonder if the evil spirit thingy is still 'alive'.

Or he was 'destroyed' after the Pool events?

-Haven't heard or seen anything about him since. We can only assume he's gone for good...Until the next time he reappears. ;)

That article rocked by sheer virtue of it giving more lore on the Dead Three. Bane, Bhaal, and Myrkul rock!

There is actually a picture of Borem in the Grand History of the Realms. He looks pretty cool. Well for a giant made of mud anyway. I liked the little story that went along with it about Bane, Bhaal, and Myrkul coming along and "saving the day". It almost paints them out to be heroes hehe. Imagine Bane the Hero!

According to the Cloak & Dagger web enhancement [which I linked to earlier], Tyranthraxus is a demipower.

Curiously, the term "Seven Lost Gods" has its roots in antiquity. It more properly refers to seven demipowers that bowed down before Bane long ago: Maram of the Great Spear, Haask the Voice of Hargut, the Flamed One, Borem of the Lake of Boiling Mud, Camnod the Unseen, and two whose names have been forgotten.

I see, but Tyranthraxus didn't even seem to possess a demigod's power.

First off, they probably were once far more powerful, back in primordial times, but without any new worshippers, they have become diminished, down to the level of demi-powers.

I always thought Kiputytto should have been one of these Faerūnian 'Elder Evils' - she's definately qualifies as a lost god - one who seems to have only disappeared within the last thousand years or so, and her portfolio puts her in good company with those others.

Unfortunatly ,she is as dead as dead can be (kind of hard to come back after Talona has you for afternoon tea).

I also repeat that the Tyranthraxus the shapechanger in the campaigns is nowhere near even a demipower in power.

Maybe he degenerated beyond godhood, gaining a sort of undeath... not sure if it would be possible.

Or he was actually a Proxy, Planescape-style?
MarkusTay63

02-10-08, 12:37 AM
I was thinking something along those lines as well, especially the one named "Haask the Voice of Hargut".

Perhaps these seven were just avatars of Far Realmsian powers that got 'trapped' here when Abeir was split off from Toril?

Maybe Hargut is one of the Lords of Madness?

Either way, you can't really judge the power level of a FR NPC by how it is represented in a video game, most especially a semi-divine one that is being statted as boss monster.

Maybe he degenerated beyond godhood, gaining a sort of undeath... not sure if it would be possible.Should be - Orcus was an undead god... or Demon lord... either way, that shouldn't have been possible, but it was.

Wouldn't Velsharoon also fall into that category? Although he was a Lich first, then a god (like Vecna and Mellifleur).

The booklet that came with the Pool of Radiance game had the following information:

Journal Entry 19:
A black bound tome written in a strange halting hand.

...and settled foremost in the half of Minor Courtiers were the lesser
powers: Maram of the Great Spear; Haask, Voice of Hargut; Tyranthraxus
the Flamed One; Borem of the Lake of Boiling Mud; and Camnod the
Unseen. These too fell down and became servants of the great lord
Bane.

JOURNAL ENTRY 21:
A crumbling old book; one of a massive series.
"At this time there ruling the Twisted Ones was a powerful general
named Tyranthraxus. He strode before his armies cloaked in flame and
led the Riders out of the Waste. At his hand the kingdom of Barze was
conquered. Turning south he led his army to conquer the Horreb and the
Vane. Tyranthraxus was a cruel man and leveled all that he had taken,
murdering the princes of these lands. But the flame that surrounded him
consumed him, destroying his body. Freed of its shell, it flew among
the men of his army, lighting on each and claiming it. It was then when
Baron Schodt imprisoned Tyranthraxus in a vial of water which shone
like the light of day. This he sank in the watery depths of Lake
Longreach, defeating the armies Tyranthraxus had raised."

Ferran speaks: 'The city fell long ago to the unblessed creatures imbued with the might of a magical pool. Chief among these were Tyranthraxus, Edranka, and Torath. With their powers they rules and united all else, driving foward to destroy us all. The Sage Mendor worked hard to gather record of all these things, but they are lost now, his library overrun.'

Journal Entry 36:
Carefully prepared notes:

Note 4: He has fooled me. All this time he has called himself
Tyranthraxus the Flamed One. He exhibited his flame, and spoke of
deeds attributed to Tyranthraxus. But today, while he did not know I
was around, he revealed his true identity. He spoke into the great
pool in his lair, I think he spoke to lord Bane himself. And he
referred to himself as Maram. Maram, he of the great spear, is also a
servant of Bane.

Why would my leader use a false name? He hides his true identity from
the world, so that they do not research his past and discover his
weaknesses. What if he also hides his identity from his closest
advisors, so that they also cannot know his true abilities and
weaknesses. Anyone who attacked him, thinking to utilize the
weaknesses of Tyranthraxus, would be destroyed by the different powers
Maram of the Great Spear.

My research into Tyranthraxus is now useless. I must scour my records
for details concerning Maram of the Great Spear. I have much work to
do.

Kiputytto was killed and absorbed by Talona. See the entry for "Talona" in Faiths & Avatars.

I'll note further that, in Ed's original "Down-to-Earth Divinity" from DRAGON #54, Talona is Kiputytto renamed. It would appear, then, that both were parts of the disease/sickness 'archtype', with Talona being Faerūnian in origin, and Kiputytto being an interloper.

There is some suggestion in sources that they had an ongoing struggle for many years, which culminated in the Stonelands region, where Talona finally won out over her 'celestial sibling' and absorbed her.

Since these 'Elder Lost Gods' appeared to be Faerūnian in origin, and perhaps primordial, then I suppose Kiputytto would not qualify.

I just like the idea of all the lost gods having 'gross' portfolios.

I suppose Moander would have to make the list then, but isn't he an aspect of Ghaunadaur?
XHereticX

02-10-08, 03:35 PM
Hmm, I just got a new idea. Maybe the Lost Gods are all aspects of Ghaunadaur?

Though I am not sure if they are abberation or primordial in origin. If it is the latter, then I would assume they are just archomentals.

I suppose Moander would have to make the list then, but isn't he an aspect of Ghaunadaur?

-Nope. Well, not as of now, anyway. The two might be 'merged' for 4e, who knows...

-Interesting research, rip. This confuses me, though, especially since I never played that game:

Note 4: He has fooled me. All this time he has called himself

-So, Tyranthraxus and Maram are one entity now? Was whoever it was just using a fake name, as alluded to?

I suppose Moander would have to make the list then, but isn't he an aspect of Ghaunadaur? :confused:You may have confused this with the details about Ghaunadaur assuming both of the aspects of the Faceless Lord and the otherwise unnamed Elder Elemental God [neither of the latter two powers is active in the Realms] within the crystal sphere of Realmspace.

-So, Tyranthraxus and Maram are one entity now? Was whoever it was just using a fake name, as alluded to?

It sounds like the villain of the Pool of Radiance game was actually Maram disguising himself as Tyranthraxus and mimicking Tyranthraxus' powers without actually having any of Tyranthraxus' weaknesses. Who knows where the real Tyranthraxus was during all of this. Perhaps he was off somewhere disguising himself as Maram.

That is, if the in-character narrator was right. Perhaps he was Tyranthraxus after all, deliberately confusing the eavesdropper by pretending to speak to Bane.

It's interesting that this was hinted at and never mentioned again. I'm guessing it was a way to provide some wiggle room so that "Tyranthraxus" (actually Maram) could reappear after seemingly being defeated later on.

Frankly, I think Tyranthraxus has the potential to be an awesome addition to any game. However, ignoring what will happen in 4E I would love to see Tyranthraxus possess Szass Tam and for them to merge into one personality. Imagine: Szass Tam, the Flaming Lich, Ruler of All of Thay. Imagine the possibilities. :P

Boost Szass up to level 65 and watch the Simbul wet her bed. ;)
