Letsee... cool tentacle rods, awesome traps that shoots tentacles from walls and eats interloopers alive.. and whenever you sacrifice a goblin or some human peasant.. you get 50k worth of treasure?!?!!

Oh yeah and the best of the best.. Insanity.
That is your spells are almost impossible to resist and tons of bonus spells..
Furthermore you can always say its insanity whenever CE doesn't bend to what you want to do :D (as if thats a problem, really..!)

Tharizdun? Yeah he's only one of the Elder Evils right? Ghaunadar behaves also alot like how you described...

These elder evils behaved like some sort proto dieties as far as I understand. They travel the planes in disguise to sow their personal seeds of destruction. Tharizdun is worshipped by whom in the realms?

One more reason why i used that elder elemental eye.. who is worshiped.
Small cults here and there.. Mentioned ever so briefly at ADD deity supplements and iirc at those return to the temple of evil conversions.

Anyway, now with the changes i hear its becoming core part of the realms, as lord over the elemental planes.. and the demons living there..

I like to think that Ghaunadaur is the Realms' aspect of Tharizdun.

Tharizdun is only in Greyhawk by default, though...

I like much the Temple of Elemental plot(s).

Ghaunadaur is the Realms' version of the Elder Elemental God featured in Gary Gygax's G and D modules. T-------- is a distinct entity originally created by Rob Kuntz and spotlighted in module WG4 and Gary's Gord novels (and described as the Dark God in DMGR4 Monster Mythology). Monte Cook's conflation of the two is not part of Realmslore or, to my knowledge, any lore outside Return to the Temple of Elemental Evil.

-I like to think of it that Ghaunadaur is known in other places as the Elder Elemental deity, and not the other way around. :)

I think Tharizdun will be a big part of the new Realms. The aboleths worship him and they will likely have a new Empire on the surface.

I think he is the same god from Lords of Madness. I think that most of the lore from LoM will be canon in the new Realms.

I snicker that this terrible being whom if freed would destroy all of creation, and who was imprisoned only due to the combined efforts of the Greyhawkian pantheon is an intermediate power.

When you realise that even EVIL gods like Iuz the old evil thug-emperor pause in uneasyness and may consider alliance with forces of GOOD....

I think its fairly significant that Ghaunadaur is a "stronger and more ancient power" than was previously thought, able to resist the efforts of Lolth.

Perhaps it's finally regaining the power it lost when it stupidly feebleminded its entire worshiper base?

-A plausible theory. Didn't the Undermountain adventure have something to do with aboleth? Maybe Ghaunadaur has made some kind of pact with their deities? Who knows?

My theory is that Ghaunadaur did that because it 'needed' their power for something--as I mentioned, I like to think he is an alias of Tharizdun (or the other way around) and was perhaps able to use his worshippers' minds to avoid his imprisonment within the crystal sphere of Toril.

Wasn't Ghaunadaur the Realms' Juiblex?

Interesting, and I like this theory far more than the one presented where he turns his followers into idiots because Lolth spurned him.

One shows ruthless dedication to power and long term planning, the other is just dumb.

I snicker that this terrible being whom if freed would destroy all of creation, and who was imprisoned only due to the combined efforts of the Greyhawkian pantheon is an intermediate power. The idea is that its presence is equivalent to that of an intermediate power even despite its imprisonment. Otherwise it's intended as something like an overgod.Wasn't Ghaunadaur the Realms' Juiblex?Demihuman Deities:Although Ghaunadaur is a distinct entity unrelated to the tanar'ri lord Juiblex, the Faceless Lord, or the otherwise unnamed Elder Elemental God neither of the latter two powers is active in the Realms, and Ghaunadaur has assumed both of their aspects within the crystal sphere of Realmspace.(Read the claim about the Elder Elemental God in light of the fact that much of Ghaunadaur's writeup is taken directly from descriptions of the EEG, which is itself distinct from Juiblex.)

Indeed.

Juiblex is a Demon Lord in the D&D core rules. In the Realms, he had some worshipers in 2e's Thay IIRC. When Demihuman Deities, and the other god books, were being worked on there was some desire to tidy up some of the gods, thus Juiblex became an aspect of Ghaunadaur in the Realms. Similar things happened to the 2e god of liches in Monster Mythology becoming an aspect of Velsharoon and Sseth garnering many different aspects.

Oh, heh. I hadn't realised there was such a theory about him being spurned--do you remember where it came from?

-They already have their own deities.

-It's mentioned in both Evermeet: Island of the Elves, and Demihuman Deities. When Lolth first made her presence known in Realmspace, it's fair to say that she was not as powerful as she is now, or before her recent ascention. Ghaundaur, thinking she'd be an easy kill, tried to subsume her. Lolth was able to beat the Elder Eye back, however, and maintain her own identity. The exact details about what transpired are not mentioned in either source, however. In the aftermath, being extremely angry, Ghaunadaur stripped all of it's worshippers of intelligence.

I really like this little story. (makes you wonder what all those gelatinous cubes and globs where and what they knew, can you imagine that, giving oozes personality ^^)

Aboleths worship Tharizdun and several other Elder Evils, so them worshipping Ghaunadar, an aspect of Tharizdun (or vice versa) makes sense. The others are dieties of the Far Realms and real Cthulhu like behemoths. Merging of Cthulhu and the Realms, I could like that in a disturbing way...

Oh. By the use of the word "spurned" I'd imagined that meant Ghaunadaur had made romantic overtures to Lolth.
