| morvegil12-03-07, 07:40 AM | I just read the Black Bouquet. It was awesome with a Dark Moon monk. Anymore novels with monks in them? thanks. |
| Rinonalyrna Fathomlin12-03-07, 09:27 AM | The Cleric Quintet. Unclean. Stardeep. Probably more, but those are what I can think of off the top of my head. |
| Warning12-03-07, 09:35 AM | The Cleric Quintet. Unclean. Stardeep. Probably more, but those are what I can think of off the top of my head. I can't quite remember who from unclean is a monk, it's been quite a while. Is the immortal guy who killed the captain after getting info from him and then telling him his life story the one you mean? I had just thought he had combat experience for a long amount of life time, not that he was a monk. But now I know I guess. Too bad though, his theory was that everyone dies except him so there is no point in trying to get close to anyone. But there are Vampires and other such beings he failed to mention that can live ageless other than him. |
| Rinonalyrna Fathomlin12-03-07, 09:49 AM | Is the immortal guy who killed the captain after getting info from him and then telling him his life story the one you mean? Yes. And he was indeed a monk. He was a Monk of the Long Death in practice if not name (he was estranged from that order). |
| Warning12-03-07, 09:51 AM | Yes. And he was indeed a monk. He was a Monk of the Long Death in practice if not name (he was estranged from that order). Grandmaster Kane could take em =) |
| Lord Karsus12-03-07, 11:45 AM | Grandmaster Kane could take em =) -Yes, there is also Grandmaster Kane from Road of the Patriarch. |
| Warning12-03-07, 12:19 PM | -Yes, there is also Grandmaster Kane from Road of the Patriarch. That is what I said? O.o |
| Lord Karsus12-03-07, 12:22 PM | That is what I said? O.o -No. You just mentioned him, which reminded me that the character was in a novel, thus answering the OPs question. -I shot the goal, and you got the assist. ;) |
| BadCatMan12-03-07, 06:59 PM | Maiden Of Pain in the Priests series has a Monk/Cleric of Loviatar. She's not evil btw. She doesn't get up to a lot of monk-ish behaviour either. |
| Eli_the_Tanner12-03-07, 07:41 PM | The Cleric Quintet. Salvatore originally wanted to use this series to write a story with a monk as the main protagonist (as monks are his favourite class). The publishers at the time felt that not enough books were written about clerics and decided that he should change his lead. This was supposed to help change the attitude of clerics arn't cool that has plagued the class. Salvatore did still manage to sneak a monk in though, through Dancia. |
| creyzi4zb1212-04-07, 04:10 AM | Hmmmm....Let's see...these are the books where monks'r at Cleric Quintet Trilogy - Danica Servant of the Shard - Danica Sea of Swords - Danica Dragonwall - Batu's Wife (I forgot her name) Road of Patriarch - Kane |
| morvegil12-04-07, 04:37 AM | So Road of Patriarch is the best Monk book? ANything else?!? I have an itching for MONKS!!!! Sefris from Black Bouquet rocked, to bad they punked her out. |
| Warning12-04-07, 08:07 AM | Salvatore originally wanted to use this series to write a story with a monk as the main protagonist (as monks are his favourite class). That jerk. No wonder his character was so overpowered. Did RAS think it was cool when he made 2 Dragons fearful just because of his presence? It was so awesome he can stare and kill someone by speaking a few words? Killing innocents is justified because it is the will of the king? Kane was the worst character I have ever read about. Hes like AO, but just in mortal standards: can not lose and has a fan base out the ass. |
| Rinonalyrna Fathomlin12-04-07, 09:35 AM | So Road of Patriarch is the best Monk book? Who said that? |
| Lord Karsus12-04-07, 10:03 AM | So Road of Patriarch is the best Monk book? ANything else?!? I have an itching for MONKS!!!! Sefris from Black Bouquet rocked, to bad they punked her out. -Nope. Actually, to learn about Monks, it is the worst on the list. The best on the list would be the Cleric Quintet, as it offers the most insight about Monks, in general, as Danica is a main character, and gets a lot of screen time. |
| dethmetal12-04-07, 12:22 PM | That jerk. No wonder his character was so overpowered. Did RAS think it was cool when he made 2 Dragons fearful just because of his presence? Hes like AO, but just in mortal standards: can not lose and has a fan base out the ass. Kane isn't Salvatore's character. Well orginally atleast, He was a character from some adventure module; I can't remember which one, but it's been mentioned in other threads before. And monks get the stare/kill ability in the game too it's called quivering palm (lvl 17 or 18 ability) It's just that Salvatore played it up dramatically to make the power seem a lot more all powerful then it is in game terms. I don't see the comparison between Kane and AO...One is a high level NPC, the other is a plot device to keep things in check. Kane can be defeated, just need someone of equal power/skill (Artemis got the drop on the druid in Kanes party, who is suggested to be of comparable level to Kane and Garath) AO is a tool in the game for the DM to keep control, so that if your players go crazy (as players are likely to do) and decided to try to attain a divine rank, or go godslaying, you as the DM will have a trump card to reign them back into the game. |
| Green Elven Vampire12-04-07, 12:46 PM | Several high ranking members of The Citadel of Assassins should be enough to take out Kane. The Grandmaster of Assassins himself should do the job with planning. |
| Eli_the_Tanner12-04-07, 01:30 PM | I tend to think that RAS was trying to illustrate that Artemis (and by extension drizzt) are not unbeatable. Characters like Kane outclass them completely - I think the belief that Kane is 'overpowered' comes from the common misconception that Artemis/Drizzt are the best in the realms. |
| Warning12-04-07, 01:37 PM | Several high ranking members of The Citadel of Assassins should be enough to take out Kane. The Grandmaster of Assassins himself should do the job with planning. Yes because, since Artemis and Jarlaxell couldn't kill Kane. And Jarlaxell not only defeated the Grandmaster of Assassins (with a bit of drow help), but made him join the Underdark. So I am wondering as of how the GM of Assassins would accomplish taking Kane down if the Drow could not? |
| MarkusTay6312-04-07, 01:40 PM | Kane isn't Salvatore's character. Well orginally atleast, He was a character from some adventure module; I can't remember which one, but it's been mentioned in other threads before. He WAS in the module - Bloodstone Lands - which Salvatore ALSO wrote. He was a designer before he was an author, just like the rest. Difference is, he had ta... wrote bestsellers. ;) If you can find a copy of Bloodstone Lands, check out the blurb on the back cover - in retrospect it's funny as hell. Icewind Dale was supposed to be in the Bloodstone lands! Having recently read both tRotP and Dragonwall, I can say with some authority that the Monk characters are not really well developed at all in either. Dragonwall is a somewhat more realistic portrayal, however, and the book is a pretty good read (the whole series is). So yeah, I'd say Danica is the Monk you're looking for. |
| Green Elven Vampire12-04-07, 01:54 PM | Yes because, since Artemis and Jarlaxell couldn't kill Kane. So I am wondering as of how the GM of Assassins would accomplish taking Kane down if the Drow could not? You're thinking of Knellict Wizard 15/ Assassin 4 The Grandmaster of Assassins is another person entirely. I believe his name is something like Timoshankan. |

Can you post a link for info about him/her? Or novel name please. I can't recall the name entirely but it sounds familiar. |
| Rinonalyrna Fathomlin12-04-07, 04:08 PM | Icewind Dale was supposed to be in the Bloodstone lands! As for Danica--I find her annoying. But if one must read about a monk and they want to read as much as possible...well, you'll get plenty of "monk stuff" with Danica. |
| dethmetal12-04-07, 04:19 PM | He WAS in the module - Bloodstone Lands - which Salvatore ALSO wrote. He was a designer before he was an author, just like the rest. Difference is, he had ta... wrote bestsellers. ;) I stand corrected, i wasn't aware he had authored the adventure too. |
| BadCatMan12-04-07, 07:07 PM | Actually, the Bloodstone series of adventures were written by Douglas Niles and Michael Dobson. They were published in 1985 and had no connection to FR. The Bloodstone Lands sourcebook was written by RA Salvatore in 1989, adapting the adventure series to the FR setting. This is the one that promises to be the Icewind Dale setting. Kane was a 16th level Monk of Ilmater (in the old money) across the adventure series. He became a 17th level Monk in the sourcebook. I haven't yet read Patriarch, but I expect he's about the same level still. It's Grandfather Of Assassins, and he's currently Timoshenko. And Ao doesn't have a fan-base. :p |
| Lord Karsus12-04-07, 07:14 PM | It's Grandfather Of Assassins, and he's currently Timoshenko. -I can't help but think of some angry Russian, ready to break someone's knees... |
| MerrikCale12-04-07, 09:30 PM | Actually, the Bloodstone series of adventures were written by Douglas Niles and Michael Dobson. They were published in 1985 and had no connection to FR. actually, by the time H3 was released the adventure series had been wedged into the newly released Realms. In fact, Ed Greenwood gets a co-authorship of H3 The Bloodstone Wars. |
| MerrikCale12-04-07, 09:35 PM | If you can find a copy of Bloodstone Lands, check out the blurb on the back cover - in retrospect it's funny as hell. Icewind Dale was supposed to be in the Bloodstone lands! Thanks a lot. I had to go to dig that out to laugh again. I wonder why they let that go. |
| MarkusTay6312-04-07, 11:17 PM | Makes me wonder why they decided to move it north of The North, which was a pretty odd and remote location for it, rather then leave it where it was originally intended. You have that group of lakes in Vaasa, and that cluster of towns in Damara - both of which look like ideal places for Ten-towns to have been located. Ah, well... things that might have been. |
| Kail12-05-07, 12:12 AM | I would list Xaphira Matrell of the Scions of Arrabar series has at least a few monk levels along with her initial calss of fighter, perhaps cleric. Which reminds me to finish that set of books. |
| Green Elven Vampire12-05-07, 12:41 AM | Can you post a link for info about him/her? Or novel name please. I can't recall the name entirely but it sounds familiar. So I am wondering as of how the GM of Assassins would accomplish taking Kane down if the Drow could not? The Grandmaster of Assasins and the one Jarlaxle brought down were different persons. The one Jarlaxle made join the Underdark was only an infidel of the Grandmaster of Assasins. I tend to think that RAS was trying to illustrate that Artemis (and by extension drizzt) are not unbeatable. Characters like Kane outclass them completely - I think the belief that Kane is 'overpowered' comes from the common misconception that Artemis/Drizzt are the best in the realms. Dun farget Obouldz!! He kicked some ass too even tho' he got lower levelz than Drizzt! And I think Obould'z stat build is very very very unfair!! BTW: Is Timoshenko that old? |
| Green Elven Vampire12-05-07, 02:01 AM | The Grandmaster of Assasins and the one Jarlaxle brought down were different persons. The one Jarlaxle made join the Underdark was only an infidel of the Grandmaster of Assasins. BTW: Is Timoshenko that old? I would hardly call Knellict, a Wizard 15/ Assassin 4 an infidel, as he would do some rather extremely unpleasant things to even high level characters. Grandfather of Assassins is just a title for the highest ranking Assassin in a particular region. Mind you, to get that title you need to be pretty much untouchable in your skills and talents of assassination. Entreri would not be able to take Timoshenko toe to toe. Heck, I'd say the Assassin known as Ghost would be a even fight for Entreri. But that's a spoiler I won't get into. |
| MarkusTay6312-05-07, 03:39 AM | I believe the correct word there would be minion, or perhaps disciple - Infidel has a religious conotation and is not appropriate at all in this useage. As long as we are talking about Monks, I came across a little gem today; it was in The Horde article in Dragon #349. The new Tuigan Kingdom of Yaïmmunahar has a Monastic order... of mounted knights! I'm trying to picture using Kung-Fu from horseback... I know I'm going to have lots of fun writing up that PrC for the K-T thread. :D Who knows? Maybe they teach the horses martial arts too. :P Flurry of Hooves, anyone? |
| Lord Karsus12-05-07, 08:21 AM | The new Tuigan Kingdom of Yaïmmunahar has a Monastic order... of mounted knights! I'm trying to picture using Kung-Fu from horseback... | BadCatMan12-05-07, 08:32 AM | Eh. All combat styles are martial arts. Knowing how to swing a sword well, with specific styles and stances and stuff, is a martial art. It need not be restricted to fists or feet. I expect they're a squad of lightly armoured, sword-or-lance-wielding cavalry or mounted archers to something. A kick from horseback is difficult to say the least, and has no reach or range. |
| Rinonalyrna Fathomlin12-05-07, 11:55 AM | I would list Xaphira Matrell of the Scions of Arrabar series has at least a few monk levels along with her initial calss of fighter, perhaps cleric. Which reminds me to finish that set of books. Thomas M. Reid did say she had some monk in her. But she doesn't act very "monkish" in the books. She is apparently pretty skilled at fist-fighting, but that in itself doesn't make one a monk. |
| Green Elven Vampire12-05-07, 02:51 PM | I believe the correct word there would be minion, or perhaps disciple - Infidel has a religious conotation and is not appropriate at all in this useage. Or perhaps Guild Lieutenant? |
