| Zakyrel02-25-08, 07:56 PM | Hi, Am I the only guy who think Drizzt official stats are too high ? Can someone explain me how he can have : Str 13 (or 20 in Miniature 3.5), Dex 20, Con 15, Int 17, Wis 17, Cha 14 ? Normaly 25 points buy-in (all stats to 8) is the way to create a PNJ, isn't it ? Does someone know an other version of Drizzt less powerful in stats ? Thanks. |
| Drew1369r02-26-08, 07:49 AM | Thats the problem with stating novel caracters, they are given stats the way they were written... not by point buy-in |
| Zanan02-26-08, 10:30 AM | 25 PB is surely not too high for high level, special and iconic characters. IMHO, 25 PB is too low for even average NPCs of a setting ... though that all depends on how DMs likes to play their games. Heroes, good or bad, should have heroic scores without spending vast sums of their relatively low (NPC) gear money on buff items. And, BTW, these stats are quite close to his AD&D stats, after which the character was presumably created. |
| Argaud02-26-08, 11:31 AM | I agree with the OP, the stats are absurdly high. But the whole write-up is poorly done. A real NPC would have many stat-increasing items, just like PCs have. They are too important to survive in the 3.5E universe. "Str 13, Dex 20, Con 15, Int 17, Wis 17, Cha 14"? Easy to fix, lets say he started, as a 25 point build: Str 10, Dex 15, Con 13, Int 13, Wis 11, Cha 10 Apply drow modifiers: Str 10, Dex 17, Con 11, Int 15, Wis 11, Cha 12 Apply 4 point increase by levels: Str 11, Dex 18, Con 11, Int 15, Wis 13, Cha 12 Now give Drizzt a few basic items granting +4 Con and Wis and +2 Int, Cha, Str and Dex. An ECL 18 character has those and more. Now the stats make sense. Fixed. |

He didn't use PB; he rolled. Considering that he's basically a one-in-a-million prodigy, I can dig it. Besides, he's not supposed to be someone your characters just plow over, so he needs all that and more. |
| Rinonalyrna Fathomlin02-26-08, 02:04 PM | Hi, Am I the only guy who think Drizzt official stats are too high ? *laughs* The relative high stats that NPCs tend to have in comparison to what most PCs tend to get has been a point of discussion in D&D-loving circles for a long time.:) That being said, while Drizzt does have high stats, one can argue that they weren't as optimized as they could have been--and I'm not saying they "should" be min/maxed, I'm just saying that Drizzt's stats aren't indisputably perfect, especially according to those players who are most in love with having as much power as possibly can be squeezed from a character. |
| Rinonalyrna Fathomlin02-26-08, 02:05 PM | Thats the problem with stating novel caracters, they are given stats the way they were written... not by point buy-in Drizzt was created long before the point-buy system was the "standard" as it is now. But even then, I doubt anyone rolled for Drizzt's stats. |
| Kenzuki02-26-08, 04:50 PM | I personally like using a 32 point system for powerful NPCs that I want to make a difference in my projects. |
| Neko_the_Cat02-26-08, 06:03 PM | I don't think his stats are too high. In the novels, it said he's a handsome male drow but he has only officially a Charisme of 14. On the other hand, He's a special PNC and a genius fighter. It's normal he has theses stats. There are not a lot of fighters who can face thousand orcs alone. Why do you want to fight with him? He's a good guy, isn't he? :D |

Leadership abilities, social skills and more can compensate for a charisma number. And btw, I think his stats is ok. I would even not mind if they were even higher. Spectacular heroes like Drizzt should have high scores, whether you like him or not. |
| Another Gnome02-26-08, 06:32 PM | In the novels, it said he's a handsome male drow but he has only officially a Charisme of 14. I'd say even that is overrating him. Drizzt is an insecure loner prone to solving things with violence, not an inspiring leader figure. Though at least in 3E his Charisma is a more accurate reflection of his personality; in 2E being a male he'd actually have received a penalty so his unadjusted Charisma would have (technically) been 15, as opposed to 12 it is now. |
| Rinonalyrna Fathomlin02-26-08, 06:58 PM | I don't think his stats are too high. In the novels, it said he's a handsome male drow but he has only officially a Charisme of 14. Not that a score of 14 is low. |

Does someone know an other version of Drizzt less powerful in stats ? Thanks. Welcome to Faerun! When did you get here? No, but in all seriousness, if you ask many most board members they will agree that Faerun has improbablely (Is that a word?) high NPC's. Yes, though I think he is fine. He was suppose to fight his way through the underdark, which is hard to do with a singal PC, and as per tale, trained at one of the finer schools of fighting in the land, and he is the son of the once epic fighter Zac. Not to mention he could have just been really luck on the rolls, it's not to far fetched. That besides, you could just make him a different write as you see fit. It shouldn't really matter though unless he is making an apperance in your campaign and you want to kill/maime/steal from the horriably (For a herioc character) underpowerd NPC legend. I agree with the OP, the stats are absurdly high. But the whole write-up is poorly done. A real NPC would have many stat-increasing items, just like PCs have. They are too important to survive in the 3.5E universe. "Str 13, Dex 20, Con 15, Int 17, Wis 17, Cha 14"? An ECL 18 character has those and more. Now the stats make sense. Fixed. But know you have the thread tittled "Where did Drizzt get all of his magical items?". It's kinda a catch twenty-two. I think natual skill is more plausiable than missplaced/stolen/gifted/earned magical items. |
| Warning02-27-08, 04:47 AM | Why not just kill him off and problem solved. Make the world a better place without the diary writter that still hides in the closet? The only good drow, is a dead drow. I'm glad they live underground, the next time I use the toilet, I'll think of them. |
| Argaud02-27-08, 07:55 AM | But know you have the thread tittled "Where did Drizzt get all of his magical items?". It's kinda a catch twenty-two. I think natual skill is more plausiable than missplaced/stolen/gifted/earned magical items. We can also have a thread "where did Drizzt get his socks?" really. He is ECL 18, wearing ability boosters is as normal as wearing boots, having a backup dagger (or six) and having bacon and eggs for breakfast :D |
| sfdragon02-27-08, 10:53 PM | i thought the phb only had the dice roll in it and that the point buy was in the dmg?? no matter personally , i dont like the weighted point buy always make me think that my characters made from it are weaker than they should be. Drizzt's stats are just right |
| Neko_the_Cat02-28-08, 05:35 PM | Just a short note; as I see it you can be handsome and still have low charisma. Or be ugly and have high charisma. Leadership abilities, social skills and more can compensate for a charisma number. In Player Handbook p9, it said "Charisma mesures a character's force of personality, persuasiveness, personnal magnetism, ability to lead and physical attractiveness." Maybe I didn't understand very well theses words but if I have a leader who looks like a Troll or a big Thief, I will don't trust him very much as Leader...:P I like the rule of Player's option : Skills & Powers ADD 2 where Charisma was split into subabilities of Leadership and Appearance. Too Bad. ^^ PS:I agree with you because the stats of drizzt are correct for a heroic and charismatic PNC of Forgotten Realms. |
| Rinonalyrna Fathomlin02-28-08, 06:42 PM | And as I said before, a score of 14 is not "low". |
| Zanan02-28-08, 06:54 PM | No, but in all seriousness, if you ask many most board members they will agree that Faerun has improbablely (Is that a word?) high NPC's. Improbably high numbers of NPCs or high-level NPCs with imbrobable stats? With regards to the former, many people tend to overlook the actual scale of the Faerūnian map. With regards to the latter, well, that depends on the NPC at hand. Most NPC are meant to be unique folk, thus they get unique stats. I tend to give my players' PC as well as decent NPCs good stats too, as I cannot really regard the scores labeled as "elite" being actually elite or egalitarian. Thus, 32 PB or select the best of three sets of "4d6 drop lowest" is the norm. Unique opponents receive the same treatment. If you'd ask me what is truly "elite", I'd say: have a look at the stats of an erinye devil! |
| Zsych02-29-08, 12:07 AM | Ordinary people can become extraordinary with magical items, however, that doesn't mean that extraordinary people need them to be extraordinary. If great heroes weren't naturally superior they wouldn't qualify as great. As it is, I think Drizzt lacks awesomeness :P As for his charisma... he seems well respected enough through his contact with Silverymoon, and I expect the dwarves around him respect him enough. Plus he has a far reaching reputation that probably makes people think better of him in general, so I'd say its probably okay. ... I wish my current character had these stats (translated as, I wish I'd rolled better) |
| Rinonalyrna Fathomlin02-29-08, 01:32 PM | Eh, I'm not the type to differentiate between "ordinary people" and "extraordinary people" where mechanics are concerned. No one is born a hero (or a villain, for that matter), and everyone starts out at level 1. |
| Faraer02-29-08, 02:57 PM | I tend to give my players' PC as well as decent NPCs good stats too, as I cannot really regard the scores labeled as "elite" being actually elite or egalitarian. As does the Realms: player characters such as the Knights of Myth Drannor and the Company of Crazed Venturers have ability scores in the same range as non-player characters. |
| Crust02-29-08, 03:23 PM | I don't have a problem with Drizzt's stats. His levels are too low, though. I've explained this before. When considering all of the data out there covering Drizzt (the Menzobaranzan box, Hall of Heroes, Heroes Lorebook, FRCS), Drizzt should have more levels than he does. The 2E Menzo box House Do'Urden Retrospective states on page 7: "Drizzt had attained 18th level as a drow fighter under Zaknafein's tutelage." In subsequent publications, these 18 levels went missing, as dual-classing a drow is shaky at best using 2E rules, and those 18 levels would have been suppressed until Drizzt hit 19th level in another class (like ranger). Hall of Heroes stats out Drizzt as a level 10 ranger, which points to the levels he gained during his time with Montolio and during the Icewind Dale trilogy. Heroes Lorebook bumps Drizzt up to level 16 ranger, covering his exploits up to Siege of Darkness. The FRCS, which shifts over to 3.0, carried over Drizzt's 16 hit die from 2E, breaking them down as ranger 10/fighter5/barbarian1. His 16 HD from the Heroes Lorebook were translated into 3.0, and yet his original 18 levels of fighter were discarded for some reason. So, what happened to those 18 levels he earned in Menzoberanzan? 2E dual classing rules made Drizzt going from fighter to ranger a bit shaky in terms of rules, so it seems to me that Drizzt's 18 fighter levels were either forgotten or ignored to simplify things. However, 3.0 rules allow levels to stack rather neatly, and with that stacking in mind, Drizzt's forgotten 18 levels in fighter should be valid. If Drizzt had been "born" using 3.0/3.5 rules, taking into account the information in past publications, he would have 34 levels. I'm not sure how they'd break down, but he has earned 34 HD total during his long career. He earned 18 HD in Menzoberanzan, and he earned 16 HD since leaving the Underdark. The data is out there. |
| Zakyrel02-29-08, 03:51 PM | Ok let's precise what I have in mind. I would like to introduce Drizzt in my campain but, by using his official stats (13, 20, 15, 17, 17, 14), I think 18 is'nt his real CR. CR 18 would be for a 16 classes levels drow NPC with standard stats isn't it ? So I would like to create a balanced Drizzt version to be in harmony with my others NPCs and PCs. This is actually my conversion from 3.0 Drizzt real stats, to 3.5 Drizzt 25 points buy-in stats : 11, 17, 13, 14, 14, 12. I'll post here all stats and skills when I'll finish it. |

I always assumed that Drizzt basically converted from an 18th level fighter to a 16th level ranger. I don't know if such a conversion is exact, but it makes the more sense to me than dual-classing, or the fighter levels just being "forgotten". |

| Diffan02-29-08, 08:20 PM | In all honesty, Drizzt's stats are perfectly fine. You have to include the Raical adjustments AND level adjustments from 4th to 16th. Also, Drow's CRs are one higher than they're class levels, as long as they're not basic class from the DMG like warrior, aristocrat, etc. I actually re-did his character stats for 3.5 that includes sorces from the PH2 and Drow of the Underdark. | Zsych03-08-08, 11:08 PM | @Rinonalyrna: I'd say mechanics easily differentiate between natural heroes and ordinaries. Someone who rolled 18s on all his stats is automatically much more seriously hero material than the rest of us :P |

| Zsych03-09-08, 11:09 PM | Fine, lets say that someone with awesome stats has a much better chance of achieving their possibly good objectives, and thus (if their objectives were good and large scale), they will become heroes, whereas a 3 on all stats, for all his good intentions will achieve absolutely nothing(beyond picking on babies, and perhaps not even that :P) |

| Zsych03-11-08, 01:42 AM | I've never thought that Drizzt deserved even Ranger 5.. should be more like 2. He's ultimately just a fighter with inclinations towards rangerhood and barbarianism(new word :P). @Rinonalyrna: I'd say that there might be plenty of people with good intentions, but those that shine the most will be the most talented and powerful(or high statted in D&D).... [Pities the poor good hearted drow that never escaped and were crushed by Lolth] |
| Bryaxis03-15-08, 11:15 AM | I crunched the numbers once for Drizzt, Elminster, and Manshoon (as presented in FRCS, I think). Taking into account only listed inherent and enhancement bonuses, and assuming that their level-based stat increases were put in their highest stat, Drizzt is 54 point-buy, Elminster is 63, and Manshoon is 64. I never liked point buy, anyway. |
| Rizzen_Nailo03-22-08, 05:56 PM | Well when you consider as some people have said numerous times on this subject in numerous posts and boards the stats listed in the books, the miniatures cards and on the website are how Wizards believes the people are. However if you feel the stats don't work you're always free to make your own up because the only person who can tell you otherwise would be said persons creator which in the case of Drizzt and gang would be Mr R A Salvatore and good luck getting him to answer that question. If you want my opinion on Drizzt and gang, then the stats listed aren't up to date especially equipment wize with Drizzt and over all they should be around the same levels or at least closer. I mean come on who is going to believe that a white dragon in his lair as powerful as Icingdeath was could be beat by a single drow without magic weapons(if memory serves...if not then I stand corrected) and a relatively inexperienced human with a hammer. I mean come on Drizzt didn't even pull Gueny out for the fight...wait a sec I got off topic. So to make up for my babbling I'll say this, either take the stats as is(maybe update to 3.5 if they haven't already) or just make them up as you see them...problem solved. |
| sfdragon03-22-08, 06:13 PM | if they do a stat block for him in 4E, i hope they get mr. salavatore to do them |
| Minuet08-21-08, 02:12 PM | Why were his Bracers of the Blinding Strike not written into his write-up? |
| sfdragon08-21-08, 04:01 PM | He found their weakness and he had them turned into anklets. Bracers of blinding strike are for warriors who stand in one place, whiule drizzt dances through his opponents |
| Lord Karsus08-21-08, 07:48 PM | Why were his Bracers of the Blinding Strike not written into his write-up? -They are listed in his possessions in the post a few above yours. He doesn't always use them, though. |
