| MAGNUS158102-13-07, 01:46 PM | I am interested in writing a novel for Forgoten Realms, and I was wondering if any books on Entrari have been published. Has their been any books on his training practices and his training as an assassin. |
| MarkusTay6302-13-07, 02:46 PM | Promise of the Witchking and Road of the Patriarch. I'm fairly certain that WotC will only allow R.A.Salvatore to write novels about his own creations. However, that etiquette has been broken before, so I could be wrong. |
| MAGNUS158102-13-07, 07:23 PM | So there has no written works about his up bringing,:) or his training. |
| MarkusTay6302-13-07, 07:33 PM | Servant of the Shard, which I should have also mentioned, had some insights into his past, but as far as I know there have been no stories about his youth, unless they appeared in an anthology. |
| bondious02-13-07, 07:38 PM | Servant of the Shard, which I should have also mentioned, had some insights into his past, but as far as I know there have been no stories about his youth, unless they appeared in an anthology. There is a short story about Artemis as a youth, just starting out, in the anthology book 'Realms of Infamy'; I'm not sure of the story's title. Oh yeah, it's spelled "Artemis Entreri". |
| MAGNUS158102-14-07, 12:04 AM | I read servent of the shard, and it was quit good. I think people have the right to use other authors charecters for novel porposals, because those charecters are the proporty of wotc. |
| ZolDarklock02-14-07, 12:22 AM | Actually the earliest writings about Artemis I have found indicated he was an legendary mercenary as a lad, and rose to lead a merc company quickly with his fighting skills, a certain Pasha after hearing of his mercenary exploits took him under his wing and trained him as an assassin... the earliest stats back during the 1e days had him listed as a Fighter7/Assassin13 He was also noted as having a near perfect hand / eye coordination and this allowed him to use a weapon in either hand with no penalty at all, it was also noted that some thought he had ESP, since he had an uncanny ability to know exactly what an enemy would do, it was suggested that he didn't actually have ESP, but was just good at sizing up an opponent and knowing what likely action he would take also one of the earlier writings on him, gave him a deadly abiltiy that worked like this: on a hit role that succeeded by 4 or more than was needed to hit, he did double normal damage, and had a base 10%, +/- 3% per level difference of his opponents level of instantly killing his foe back in the 1e/2e days this instant kill ability, along with his assassin killing skills truly made Artemis one of, if not the deadliest opponent anyone could face in combat, only opponents who were 4 levels higher than Artemis would be safe from his instant kill ability of course later all these things were changed and now he is just one of the normal stat builds possible, I liked the old days were certain legendary individuals of the realms possessed certain abnormal abilities that others did not have it gave them unique flavor and a more deadlier and well earned reputation now days anybody can easily build a character that would stomp Artemis with ease, what a shame :-( also Artemis earliest weapons were a cruel edge saber of wounding, and a dagger+4 of full vampiric regeneration "some suggested this weapon was also a defender", back in the early days this was a combo of weapons that really messed other fighters up, he also wore a black cape of protection +4, and a ring of protection +3 "a guild ring from the pasha" |
| Lord Karsus02-14-07, 10:29 AM | I think people have the right to use other authors charecters for novel porposals, because those charecters are the proporty of wotc. -You can't use the property of WotC, either. -Well, you can think that you should be allowed to kill your wife, because all she does is nag you. That doesn't make it legal. No matter your feelings on it, you can't. Should you ever make a single cent, you've just committed copyright infringement. |
| Tarus02-14-07, 10:52 AM | I know if I was a writer I would be really upset if someone else wrote more than a short blurb about a character I developed. The reason being, when I create something I don't view you or anyone else as worthy enough (or knowing enough about the character) to write about him. |
| BrennonGoldeye02-14-07, 11:06 AM | A classic case of persona envy.;) |
| bondious02-14-07, 01:29 PM | -You can't use the property of WotC, either. -Well, you can think that you should be allowed to kill your wife, because all she does is nag you. I think that Magnus meant that other writers working for WotC should be allowed to use each other's characters in their books, not that ANYONE, even if they're not associated with WotC, should have that right. That's what I GOT from reading that, in any event. As for the assertion above, I'm pretty sure that WotC pretty much OWNES anything they publish, so TECHNICALLY they can let any writer they employ write about any character they own, but chose NOT TO in deference to their writers creative process, and to keep them happy. Seems to me, too, that most writers want to write about their OWN characters, and would only really use another's character(s) in small roles only. Example: Salvatore using Khelben in 'The Halfling's Gem'. It was only a short encounter when Drizzt and Wulfgar were thinking of entering Waterdeep, and even though Drizzt had that mask on and he appeared as a surface elf, Khelben knew he was a drow and came to find out who Drizzt was and to take his measure. Now I'm pretty sure that Salvatore called Ed up and was like "Hey, Ed, mind if I use Khelben?" and explained what he had in mind, professional courtesy and all, but I'm also pretty sure that LEGALLY he didn't have to, since WotC (I'm sure) owns the Khelben character. |
| Lord_Lucien_Karsus_Necron02-14-07, 04:44 PM | Somebody told me that Entrari had the Shade template now! Is this true? |
| MAGNUS158102-14-07, 06:10 PM | :D Thanks for all the helpfull info. I would never want to upset a fellow writer, so instead of using Etrari, i will use another charcter, and explain in my cover letter proposal that i would like to use Salvatores charecter with his permission. I could always plug in Entrari if they gave me permission. I love D&D, and would love to write a great story that I can share with others. My intentions were never to write a story that would intentially harm othe writers. |
| _SIN_02-14-07, 06:26 PM | Live your dream man, live your dream.... Out of curiosity, where you from dude, and how old? |
| Red_Wizard02-14-07, 06:47 PM | The very simple answer is no now, and possibly no permanently. Wizard's wants to see fresh, original ideas, not a fans take on an already deep, and developed character. If they wanted an Entreri's youth story, they would get the man who has written him stunningly before, to do so again. My suggestion. Create a new character with traits from Entreri you think make the character stand out. Then build up a history around him of your own, and flesh him out as you see fit. Also, if you plan to set this in the Realms, expect to wait for a Realms specific open call to apply, they don't accept Realms stories on the general novel open call. As a tack on, i'm not normally one to point this out, but I would strongly reccomend working on proper grammer, and spelling before you think about submitting any completed work for consideration to Wizards. While I understand this is only a forum post, take a look at how other authors who respond here reply, and you'll see what I mean... |

I mean bad grammar can be annoying, but nobody likes a grammer Nazi. Also have you noticed that a lot of Forgotten Realms products and Novels are full of typos and bad grammar? |

Also have you noticed that a lot of Forgotten Realms products and Novels are full of typos and bad grammar? Yes i've noticed the increased number of spelling mistakes, and grammatical errors lately. Quite annoying. But these things can more easily be avoided by the mistakes not being made in the first place. And like I said, I don't normally point out grammer issues, but in the case of an aspiring author, it might be something to be checked first. ;) |
| BrennonGoldeye02-14-07, 08:17 PM | Showing the folk you hope will publish your novel that you can spell can only be considered a plus. Spelling can lead to sentence structure, which could lead to a plot. Plots can lead to fun for all involved.:dancin: |
| MAGNUS158102-14-07, 08:53 PM | Sorry for the Grammer and spelling mistakes. My grammer is ok, and i usually pay more attention to it when i'm writting essay's. When i write for forums, I usually write half azzed because time is minimal. As for spelling,I know I suck, but that is why god invented spell check. sin I'm from hayward california. Bayarea |
| MAGNUS158102-14-07, 08:54 PM | :) Good idea red wizard, i'll use that. |
| Lord Karsus02-14-07, 11:27 PM | Somebody told me that Entrari had the Shade template now! Is this true? -Maybe, and maybe not. We don't know exactly what Entreri is nowadays. |
| MAGNUS158102-14-07, 11:30 PM | Whats a shade templated:rolleyes: |
| Lord Karsus02-14-07, 11:32 PM | Whats a shade templated:rolleyes: -The template given to a Shade. |
| Lord_Lucien_Karsus_Necron02-15-07, 04:49 PM | -Maybe, and maybe not. We don't know exactly what Entreri is nowadays. Would be interesting. The Shade template would go a long way toward restoring his lost speed and strength caused through ageing. He might even become a match for Drizzt Dourden now that he has a comparable life span. |

He might even become a match for Drizzt Dourden now that he has a comparable life span. -That's pretty much why we all think Salvatore did that in the Realms of Shadow short story. In the couple of novels before those events, Entreri was beginning to realize that he was getting on in age, and wasn't as sharp as he used to be. Now, in the novels since (Promise of the Witch-King and Road of the Patriarch), he has been "rejuvinated", with some yet untold side-effects, to be sure. |
| megeddo02-19-07, 10:35 AM | I saw clear intent by Bob to keep Artemis around for a little longer, and I think it was a terrible move. The whole charm of Artemis was that he was human, and had the negative effects of being human such as short lifespan. Overcoming the limitations of his age and coming out on top would have been a better story imo. |
| Faraer02-19-07, 03:21 PM | Isn’t that what editors are for? Catching the bad grammar! As a backstop, and certain well-known authors are routinely saved by their editors from their own semiliteracy. But considering that even gifted, skilled, knowledgable and successful writers struggle to sell proposals and get write-for-hire assignments, a neophyte who can't spell or write good English is not in a strong position. As for 'grammar Nazis', likening even the most officious language Maven to the Nazis is obscene. |
| Lord Karsus02-19-07, 05:25 PM | As for 'grammar Nazis', likening even the most officious language Maven to the Nazis is obscene. -It's derived from the 'Soup Nazi', who was featured on an episode of Seinfeld, methinks. |
| Red_Wizard02-20-07, 11:03 AM | -It's derived from the 'Soup Nazi', who was featured on an episode of Seinfeld, methinks. More than one episode...Despite my distaste for the show, I know that much of it :P |
| Lord Karsus02-20-07, 02:45 PM | More than one episode...Despite my distaste for the show, I know that much of it :P -More than one episode then. Whatever... |
| MarkusTay6302-20-07, 06:11 PM | This has gone from a discussion on the legitimacy of writing a novel containing another author's character, to a discussion on how many episodes of Seinfeld the "Soup Nazi" appeared on? Talk about sinking fast... Personally, I don't like the Shade Template thing, but I understand it. Entrerri has become another Salvatore cash-cow, and considering we are in 1375 now he had to do something to keep him from dying of old age. How sad a story would that be? Maybe it would appear in Realms of the Geriatric. :P I would think that everyone has their own FR characters, and they can freely use the other authors characters (in limited quantites). I doubt they call the other author's for their permission; more likely they mail them a portion of the manuscript with said character in it, and ask "does this sound like something he/she would do?" It's called feedback, and given the stuff I often see in a novel's 'acknowledgements' section, I would say this is a VERY common practice. Also, to LK, Faraer, and anyone else who gives a rat's arse, people have been using the term 'Nazi' to describe a certain personality type for as long as I can remember. It may have originated with the Germans of WWII, but it has evolved into a descriptive noun, nothing more. Its the same as describing someone's lifestyle as 'Spartan'; it doesn't mean they carry bronze weapons and live in a military barracks. I have actually known two Nazis in my life, one a a neighbor who was a real 'Hitler Youth', and another who was a member of the neo-nazis (American Fascist Party). In truth, unless they told you their convictions, they acted no different then anyone else. Kinda scarey, huh? ;) |
| Lord_Lucien_Karsus_Necron02-22-07, 01:21 AM | Yeah it’s kind of a cheesy way of keeping crusty old Entrerri around, but it will be interesting to see how powerful he can become with a much longer life span. He might even be able to carve out his own country or guild. Or maybe he can finally wack that darned Dark Elf!:D Hey does anyone know if Shades are sterile? I remember in the old 2nd edition they were, but how about now? I’m sure Lord Shadow had all his kids before his transformation, but what if Artemis wanted to knock out a few little ones could he?:) Ok instead of grammar Nazi let’s think of another way of putting it. Hummm…How about: obsessive compulsive, totalitarian, fascist oppressor of all users of bad grammar. Better? |
| Lord Karsus02-22-07, 01:23 PM | He might even be able to carve out his own country or guild. Or maybe he can finally wack that darned Dark Elf!:D -A guild, I can see. An entire state? Eh, I don't think so. I don't think he'd want to go after Drizzt anymore, either. He kind of "reconciled" with the part of him that was bent on revenge. Although, his new lease on life might change that in the future. Hey does anyone know if Shades are sterile? I remember in the old 2nd edition they were, but how about now? I’m sure Lord Shadow had all his kids before his transformation, but what if Artemis wanted to knock out a few little ones could he?:) -Firstly, remember, Entreri is not a Shade, as far as we know. He is a "Meta-Human"- he is obviously something more than just Human. -Anyway, I don't believe that Shades are sterile. I can't recall anything saying that they were, but I may be wrong. I have always believed that Shades give birth to Human children, who may or may not have the potential to be subjected to the Shade ritual themselves. Ok instead of grammar Nazi let’s think of another way of putting it. Hummm…How about: obsessive compulsive, totalitarian, fascist oppressor of all users of bad grammar. I will have to double check. I really don’t remember. |
| Purple Dragon Knight02-24-07, 07:45 PM | To address the original poster's question: Ed has stated (on Candlekeep.com, as he does not appear on these WotC boards anymore) time and time again that WotC is no longer accepting unsolicited Realms material (whether they be art, game accessories, game supplement, or novels/short-stories alike...) They don't even accept unsolicited material for their WEBSITE for Pete's sake! So my advice: write non-Realms stories and submit to other publishers. When you have proven yourself with one novel or two, come back to WotC and try again, this time perhaps with the backing of an existing Realms author. Attend conventions to meet one. First of all though: start reading more yourself, before you even dare attempt to write for others. It is pretentious to expect that others will read your own material when you, yourself, do not read what others before you have produced, especially in terms of Realms fiction (i.e. Entrari? What is a Shade? Is there a book out there that focuses on Entrari? for Pete's sake man, I must say this is truly pathetic...) |
