Hey guys, i hope someone can help me with this... i've been looking, asking everywhere and i can't find a satisfactory answer.

I remember vaguely an institution somewhere in Faerun, where feebleminded wizards, derranged mages and such were held, like an asylum.Someone suggested the Spellhold (on Brynnclaw Island) that was featured prominently in BG2 Shadows over Amn (the CRPG), but i think that in Spellhold, criminal casters are kept. The Asylum i'm looking (and could SWEAR that exists somewhere) is a more... hospital place. The crazed wizards are being looked after like patients by the personel, with compassion and care.

I could be wrong but i think that Midnight/Mystra visited this place at some point (maybe in the Avatar Trilogy), to show the sight of poor, mad wizards to someone.

So, anyone? Rings any bells?

Thanks in advance!

It was mentioned in the novel Prince of Lies, but damned if I can remember what it was called. It's in Waterdeep. They housed people mentally deranged by magic, until Midnight brought Adon there to see the place and he cleaned it up.

Just as Psionycx mentioned, it was mentioned in Prince of Lies. It was called the House of the Golden Quill. I believe after Adon was shown the place, he got priests from the local church of Mystra to help care for the patients of the hospital. I don't recall it ever being detailed or mentioned elsewhere, but someone may know more about it.

Damn, you guys are gooood :) I can't tell you how thankful i am- as soon as i read 'Adon' and 'Prince of Lies', it clicked home. Thanks a lot.:) :)

Sadly, i can't find any resources about the place, even now that i know the name- such a pitty, i find the premise of a deranged wizards asylum very interesting and it suits perfectly a niche in my on-going campaign. If you come across any more info, please share.

EDIT: The only passage i could find was from Prince of Lies, itself:

"I know all these unfortunates," Mystra said. "They are as much my children as the mages and scholars who flock to the temple in Tegea. Magic brought them all here." The goddess turned to her patriarch. "This is an asylum, Adon. It's run by the Golden Quill Society in Waterdeep. The bards have taken pity on these men and women, sorcerers warped irrevocably by magic gone awry. They put them here and care for them as best they can."

Thanks again, you guys ROCK!

In my campaign, these hapless wizards would probably get elected to the Mage Council of Thunder Rift, which is rumored to be run by a thoroughly off-his-nut wizard. (Not the same Thunder Rift from the module, but we created this rift shortly before the official "Thunder Rift" hit the market. We were tickled pink at our apparent clairvoyance. Too bad it didn't work for the football pool.)

Sorry for the thread necro, but I was just searching for a description to a location in Waterdeep - this must be it.

The location is $66 in Sea Ward and called "Mystra's Arms". Description is (Asylum, Class A building, 6 stories). Found in the 3.5e "City of Splendors" campaign suppliment.

In our Thunder Rift, we boosted a map from an old Dragon issue called "The School of Wizadry". Although locals regard it as a magic madhouse, the headmaster prefers to think of it as an Academy of Creative Magic.

Forgotten Terror's got an asylum too. And as for healing insane wizards... silly idea!
