| Suin Bahhar09-27-07, 06:01 PM | So which temple was/is the biggest in 1375 (after all the talk about the Orc King spoilers about the biggest cathedral in the realms falling...)? I think temples in FR could become truly awesome in height and majesty with magic helping by. So which one strikes the most awe in your campaign? |
| ravennight09-27-07, 06:16 PM | The sample chapter said Cathedral, which is different than the temple at Goldenfields, that might seem a stupid distinction, but I think it's relevant. Of the top of my head, The House of the Moon in Waterdeep is big, so is the Spires of Morning, and then the House of Firehair in Daerlun. I don't know about the southern realms, I hardly ever get there. |
| Lord Karsus09-27-07, 06:24 PM | -Note that the cathedral mentioned doesn't necessarily have to be the largest, grandest one in the Realms, in actuality. It needs to be the largest, grandest one that Drizzt knows of. That certainly narrows down the choices, and leaves the Spirit Soaring as one of the most obvious choices. |
| Suin Bahhar09-27-07, 06:32 PM | Soaring Spirit is located north of Carradoon according to P&P. Where is that in Thetyr? Build by magic? |
| Rinonalyrna Fathomlin09-27-07, 07:38 PM | -Note that the cathedral mentioned doesn't necessarily have to be the largest, grandest one in the Realms, in actuality. It needs to be the largest, grandest one that Drizzt knows of. I agree. "The grandest cathedral in the Realms" is itself a matter of opinion. I would guess the cathedral Drizzt is refering to is Spirit Soaring, myself (for a number of reasons) but ultimately there's no way to know for sure. |
| Rinonalyrna Fathomlin09-27-07, 07:40 PM | Soaring Spirit is located north of Carradoon according to P&P. Where is that in Thetyr? Build by magic? Not in Tethyr. :) It's technically in Erlkazar (sp?), but that realm was screwed up a bit on the 3E map. And it was indeed built by magic. |
| Old Sage09-27-07, 07:43 PM | Soaring Spirit is located north of Carradoon according to P&P. Where is that in Thetyr? Build by magic?Disregarding the slight changes made to the "location" of Erlkazar for 3e, in Lands of Intrigue the Soaring Spirit is located in the southern stretch of the Snowflake Mountains in the Barony of Impresk. Caradoon is a town, and is located a little further south-east, toward the southern reaches of the Barony. |
| MarkusTay6309-28-07, 01:16 AM | Not in Tethyr. :) It's technically in Erlkazar (sp?), but that realm was screwed up a bit on the 3E map. And it was indeed built by magic. Check Here. (http://markustay.deviantart.com/art/New-Full-size-Erlkazar-53442070) Near the top center, just look SW of Impresk Lake. ;) I have a newer one coming soon, which is somewhat better, now that I've finally posted the main map Key seperately. |
| ravennight09-28-07, 01:30 AM | While I agree that it only has to be the largest and grandest that Drizzt knows of and since his friend Cadderly was the high priest of that temple that would be a good reason to guess that, it's been 100 years since the beginning of events to come. While it doesn't make an exact date for when that happened, I am sure that Drizzt would have known many many temples great and small, so I wouldn't personally narrow it down to any single, especially since who really knows what the designers or Mr. Salvatore are going to throw at us. I would think he is talking about a good divine temple, and with the death of Mystra it might be that one, but it could also be anywhere in Faerun he's traveled, which I suppose could be just about anywhere in the western heartlands, so maybe it's in Amn or an even less likely place. The way it was put in the chapter, being listed with major disasters, it must have been a great force for good, though, otherwise he wouldn't have mentioned it. |

I've seen your maps, and I think they are quite good and an improvement over the official ones.:) |
| ravennight09-28-07, 10:42 PM | I find it very obnoxious that there are some pretty big differences between your maps and the official poster map pic i have on my computer. The official one leaves out features that are not terribly noticeable, but as I'm trying to mark on the new map things from all the different 2nd edition material I have available, I am getting more frustrated. The whole southern portion of the Snowflake mountains, which you have on yours are completely missing from the big poster maps, and they rerouted some of the rivers to make it impossible for me to place Mount Noblesse on mine, and other messups like that. Thank you, though, for yours because they are much truer to the older editions. I do like the new edition's maps better, but I wish they would have rearranged things correctly and not left a lot of things out. |
| MarkusTay6309-28-07, 11:58 PM | I start with the official High-Res poster map, and then 'nudge' stuff around to better fit with 2e lore. It's not perfect, and I've had to rotate the entire continent clockwise 7.2 degrees to make it fit better (they really screwed-up the N/S positions of things). In fact, the official continent doesn't even line-up to it's own silhouette on the world map in the FRCS. Try it - the world map uses the older continental outline. ;) There are also quite a few mistakes on the official map as well, like the positions of the Twin Towers in Amn, or the eastern city of Port Ghast. There are even quite a few spelling errors. Thats why I decided to do them; so we can have maps we can use with all of the wonderful 2e products. In fact, Calimshan (http://markustay.deviantart.com/art/Calimshan-66036201) is up right now. :D |
| 1 ton ghost09-29-07, 02:30 PM | again, mostly speculation. Drizzt's interpretation is key, not necessarilly largest and so forth from an architectural or religious perspective. none really mentioned, but common sense nonetheless: -City of the Dead (Waterdeep)surely there is a massive shrine/church/cathedral to Kelemvor or Jergal, probably remnants of the old Myrkul regime as well. -any in Bezantur, Thay city of 1,000 faiths and all that, plus one of few tolerant/acceptant of evil ones. the House of Shadows (Mask) and Temples to Bane and Cyric are probably notably large/powerful, while Kossuth is having a golden era in Thay. it would stand to reason some Kossuthian churches are massive given their clout and power there, but Salvatore writes mostly in the Silver Marches, etc. -Selunite one in Silverymoon; not my favorite faith, but a very popular one, especially given the Sharran influence, etc. who knows. |
| GothicDan09-29-07, 03:23 PM | The two temples which always struck me were the House of the Moon and the Spires of the Morning in Waterdeep, the Grove of Corellon on Evermeet, and the one to Kossuth in Bezantaur - the Ziggurat-looking one. |
| Lord Karsus09-29-07, 07:29 PM | -Your momma is the biggest...:shifty: -Heh, heh, heh... |
| Rinonalyrna Fathomlin09-29-07, 08:09 PM | I would agree that logically, it'd have to be some type of temple of a goodly faith. However, logic isn't always present in that prologue, because Drizzt seems to lament that places like Thay (!) have fallen on hard times (why would he?). |
| GothicDan09-29-07, 08:13 PM | Insanity. *Nods.* |

My guess is what's going on in Thay in late 1400s Dale Reckoning is enough to make even Drizzt nostalgic for the Regime of the Zulkirs. |
| SgtAnjay09-30-07, 08:59 PM | My guess is what's going on in Thay in late 1400s Dale Reckoning is enough to make even Drizzt nostalgic for the Regime of the Zulkirs. Considering the kinds of things the Thayans like to play around with, this isn't all that farfetched. For all we know some demon lord or another managed to turn Thay into their "layer", to some extent or another. Though my personal vote would be for Kossuth to claim Thay as his summer home. Go Tyrant Among Fire! :cheer: :king: :cheer: The Elemental Deities have been bit players way too long... |
| Ramar Aulinvox10-02-07, 01:46 AM | I believe the temple will be the spirit soaring. I just found a preview of this little book on Amazon. The title is the Obsidian Ridge (part of the citidels series). It is a floating, shadowy, living castle that appears over Erlkazar. http://www.amazon.com/Obsidian-Ridge-Citadels-Jess-Lebow/dp/0786947853/ref=sr_1_35/105-7217838-8277222?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1191303695&sr=1-35 |
| MarkusTay6310-02-07, 02:13 AM | Lovely. :noway: More Shadowcrap. :bored: Seriously, I am so moving on.... The TMNT RPG looks more interesting, and mature, at this point. |
| Suin Bahhar10-02-07, 08:02 AM | I'd love to read some scenes with the view from and of the spirit soaring from that book. Or is there a different good one already? The priest series is any good? |
| Calmar10-02-07, 08:49 AM | That's a funny picture. :) Reminds me of evil fortresses in the fairy tales I got read out when I was a child. Is there a prince starring in that book? :D |
| Suin Bahhar10-02-07, 08:56 AM | There is a princess :D |

| Puritan1310-02-07, 01:24 PM | I would agree that logically, it'd have to be some type of temple of a goodly faith. However, logic isn't always present in that prologue, because Drizzt seems to lament that places like Thay (!) have fallen on hard times (why would he?).Depsite the fact that the rulers of Thay are evil, the common people of Thay are not. Whatever is happening in Thay is sure to affect them. Drizzt is probably aware of this, and it saddens him. Cause he's emo like that.:weep: |
| Rinonalyrna Fathomlin10-02-07, 01:50 PM | Depsite the fact that the rulers of Thay are evil, the common people of Thay are not. I'm aware of that. But if Drizzt is going to list former beacons of light that have fallen, it seems odd that he would list Thay, Mulhorand, and Sembia, of all places. |
| MarkusTay6310-02-07, 02:37 PM | Don't you know, all of the evil beings and nations will become the good ones, as they themselves are replaced by even greater evil. Doesn't this new world sound like so much fun? :bored: There is a princess :DYup And the evil wizard wants her for his bride. How pre-teen juvenile can you get? Isn't that the fortress from Krull? In fact, thats the plot from Krull (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0085811/plotsummary) too! seriously, that plot and this setting should appeal to anyone... still using a binky. |
| Asgetrion10-02-07, 06:02 PM | Hmmm... for some unfathomable reason I suspect this 'Largest Cathedral in the Realms' refers to Candlekeep. This is only a speculative hunch, though. |
| Rinonalyrna Fathomlin10-02-07, 06:45 PM | Isn't that the fortress from Krull? In fact, thats the plot from Krull (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0085811/plotsummary) too! Hmmm...interesting. ;) I too wonder if Candlekeep isn't the cathedral Drizzt is talking about--it's mainly known as a library, but it's a place of worship as well. That would suck.:( |
| Suin Bahhar10-02-07, 07:14 PM | Nah...That's sacrilige...oh wait  |
| MarkusTay6310-02-07, 11:00 PM | The only things they have promised to keep with 4e are all the things that appeared on the cover of GHotR - Drizzt, Elminster, the FR logo, and lots of empty Real Estate. ;) |
| Lord Karsus10-03-07, 12:48 PM | -Wasn't the FR logo different? I don't have the book on me right now, but I remember that there was something different about it. -It was also not the standard color. |
