Presumably the races can interbreed We have half-elves (Human/elf) We have Half-Orc (Human orc) We have Muls (Human Dwarf) We have tieflings and aasimar feyri and genasi Ok....We all got the basics Now what happens if A GNome breeds with a human? A halfling breeds with a human? An orc breeds with an elf? An elf and a dwarf? elf and gnome or halfling? And soooooo on.........*pulls hair in frustration*.....Somebody please calm me with some good info!!! |

We have half-elves (Human/elf) We have Half-Orc (Human orc) Yes humans are the most compatible race We have Muls (Human Dwarf) Muls are always sterile We have tieflings and aasimar feyri and genasi Outsiders (especially demons) are remarkably compatible with differing races (elemantals cant have sex but janni and efreetie can) Ok....We all got the basics Almost :) Now what happens if A GNome breeds with a human? A halfling breeds with a human? An orc breeds with an elf? An elf and a dwarf? elf and gnome or halfling? | Zandilar05-10-07, 07:30 PM | Heya, Now what happens if A GNome breeds with a human? A halfling breeds with a human? An orc breeds with an elf? An elf and a dwarf? elf and gnome or halfling? No possible offspring I wouldn't be so quick to dismiss this if I were you. There are ways. However, it's not core, and the offspring are so rare as to be like 1 in a 1000000. Personally, I rule that elves are incompatiable with orcs... But all of the rest are potentially possible with the right mix of magic and divine intervention (which means the only reason why I rule elves incompatiable with orcs is because I am rather protective of my elves, and a half-elf half-orc is not appealing to me at all). Read the Book of Erotic Fantasy (from Mulhavoc Press I believe). ^^ The Book of Erotic Fantasy is published by the Valar Project. It has some interesting things in it, but the artwork just leaves me flat (I am not a big fan of photo-manipulation when it's as poorly done as it is in BoEF). I wouldn't take everything it says as lore, and I'm sure most of the fluff of the book isn't really applicable to the Realms. On Muls: Muls are from Athas (Darksun). I don't know if a dwarf/human half-breed in the Realms is sterile. They may not be. |
| Another Gnome05-10-07, 07:35 PM | I recommend reading through Ed's answers at Candlekeep for little tidbits like this. (As much as I occasionally disagree with some of Mr. Greenwood's ideas, anyone willing to put that much thought to the sociobiology of fictional alien species is okay in my book, and there is of course the small matter of him being primarily responsible for the Realms to begin with. :D ) For reasons best not disclosed in public, here's something I found on halflings (emphasis mine): So saith Ed, March 13, 2006: The most common halfling, in the eyes of other races (because they're most often seen by other races, dwelling with them and wandering the Realms) is the lightfoot. They're about three feet tall, with athletic build, ruddy skin, brown or black eyes, and hair that's black and straight. They're also the breed of hin most likely to interbreed with other races, and so acquire different hues of skin, hair, and eyes. So at the very least we know that halflings are interfertile with other races. Where game mechanics are concerned, personally I would make such crossbreeds identical to full-blooded halflings (the way half-dwarves are essentially slightly taller dwarves) with only the cosmetic changes Ed mentioned. Some people will no doubt argue that a halfling-elf hybrid should be even more agile than a full-blooded elf or a halfling, but where I am concerned, an excuse not to do something is always better than the opposite. Thus, when you can assume that our miniature elf would find its decreased size to be as much a hindrance as a benefit (less strength, less sophisticated hand-eye coordination, etc.) there is no reason to complicate the mechanics when you can reasonably use the "one statblock, fits all" approach instead. As long as the other parent race is a small to medium humanoid with no racial HD, leastways. |
| Faraer05-10-07, 07:49 PM | This has happened before, and is known as a Dwelf. Not known as that in the Realms. |
| Old Sage05-10-07, 07:55 PM | This has happened before, and is known as a Dwelf. Unfortunately, I'm not the person in all the know-how of this. :(Elves and dwarves can have offspring, but it only occurred at the heights of racial cooperation. The offspring aren't a distinct crossbreed race, but taller dwarves, as FR11 Dwarves Deep (the main source on Realms dwarves) discusses. Eric L Boyd mentioned a dwelf of the Ironstar clan in one of his Mintiper's Chapbook articles -- From "Part 5: Myth Glaurach of Mintiper's Chapbook" - "As implied previously, the central caster of the variant of Mythanthar’s create mythal spell in this instance was Tisharu Craulnober. She imbued one major and one minor power into the mythal. Four secondary casters participated in the raising of Myth Glaurach’s mythal, including Aelynthi of the Eagles, a female moon elf of Eaerlanni ancestry and Clan Archmage of House Alenuath, Isinghar "Feyrune" Ironstar, a dwelf runecarver and archmage of Ammarindar, the Nameless Chosen, and Tsaer "the Horned" Nyamtharsar, a male moon elf of Eaerlanni ancestry and Clan Archmage of House Nyamtharsar." ... And a little bit from Steven Schend - "Dwelves....okay, I'll stop myself early before I start doing haiku about stone shelves and dungeon delves.... As stated above (and like half-elves), they favor and adopt the lifestyle/culture under which they are raised. Same goes for which gods they revere. Both elves and dwarves have serious cognitive dissonance when it comes to dwelves, as (unlike half-elves or half-orcs, IMO) there's no set form or expectation for how they'll look. It's anyone's guess if you'll end up with a dwarf's body size and shape with elven features and ears or an elf's body but stocky vs. svelte and rather hairier than the norm. Dwarven parents may mourn their child's inability to grow a decent beard, thanks to their elven half, while elves may grumble that the child is more interested in the dirt rather than the tree from which it springs. Most likely, they're only comfortable among some societies that embrace acceptance and unity (like Myth Drannor or Miyeritar or elsewhere). That said, I was surprised by that Myth Glaurach note. Methinks I'll have to talk to Eric and find out what else he's had the Blackstaff up to while I've not been watching....if only for my own curiousity, of course." ... And, of course, there is Labrad -- the product of Drannor Whitethistle (an elf) and Konora Onyxhelm (a dwarf). He was not specifically named as a "dwelf" however. And yes... this is where the name of Myth Drannor was derived. See Cormanthyr. |
| Alediran05-11-07, 06:43 AM | See Cormanthyr. And Elminster in Myth Drannor. |
| Fabius Maximus05-11-07, 07:50 AM | On Muls: Muls are from Athas (Darksun). I don't know if a dwarf/human half-breed in the Realms is sterile. They may not be. There are the D'tarig living on the east side of Anauroch. They are supposed to be human/dwarf crossbreeds. |
| Lord_Steve05-11-07, 08:26 PM | *claps* Ooooooo so many replies! I'll go with the slightly altered thingy....like halflings with slightly longer legs and longer ears (Elf/Halfling mix) or to defy everyone's good senses An elf with dirty green skin, with miniature tusks and slightly stronger than other elves (Half orc/elf) or Whatever....lol |
| ElberethSilverleaf05-14-07, 12:24 AM | Well if it's a male halfling and a human female he better be the John Holmes of Hobbits. Otherwise its going to be popping out with every little wriggle. Coitus major inturruptus.... |

| WightPower05-14-07, 07:00 AM | No offence to any gnomes on the site, but... why would they? I would hope that the character was sufficiently warped by having a mother or father with a midget fetish to warrant swapping DNA with a gnome or halfling etc |
| Another Gnome05-14-07, 07:17 AM | Hey, no need for a midget fetish between a gnome and a halfling! :ahem: Not everyone in the Realms is a too-tall, mind you! |

| DojiHoturi05-14-07, 11:24 PM | Halfling and Human (or any big with any small)... Easily done. The small one gets an Enlarge spell (permanent or not), or the big one gets a Shrink spell (again, permanent or not). Love knows no limits. Or at least that is what I have heard. Gimli was smitten by Galadriel. Love also apparently makes no sense... On a more serious note, there was a product put out by a third party publisher called something like 'Bastards and Half-Breeds', or something like that, which addressed some of the combinations mentioned. Also, the game Midnight(tm, and again a third party publisher) has a race specifically identified as 'jungle elves' (the smallest of the elves) and halflings interbreeding. 2 pennies, Doji |

The blood spilt by the elven god formed the first elves; that of the orcish deity formed the first orcs. Where their blood mingled, the first humans arose. Oooh, now that's quite an interesting idea for a creation myth. :) Though strictly speaking, that's more a mythological reason than actual half-elf/half-orcs, since humans are humans with no actual "elf raped by/mating with orc produces child <insert length of gestation> later." If you did take it to imply that elves and orcs are compatiable for breeding, though, would an elf's and an orc's offspring be a human too? |

| MarkusTay6305-21-07, 12:12 PM | A gnome. With a halfling. *Shudders* Where do you think the Kender came from? All the inquisitiveness without the Intelligence. ;) I'm not a perv or anything, and never went in for 'little people', but after seeing Bridget the Midget in action I have to say that chick is friggin' hot! Never found female halflings attractive... until Olive Ruskettle (beautiful pic on the cover of that novel), and I always thought female gnomes would be hideous... until the racial illustrations in 3e. They look more exotic then childlike (halflings) or withered prunes (gnomes). Dwarvish women still leave me flat, though. Must be the facial hair thing, thats why I stopped dating Italian women. ;) About the others - As already said, FR doesn't have Muls, it has D'tarig Humans, like fiends, can breed with anything (we are the Jerry Springer Show of the Universe) Fey can breed with anything, and because of the Elves connection to the Fey (exFey?), it allows them to breed with anything. A Dwarf and a Gnome would be a tall Gnome/skinny Dwarf and not much else. I'm still not sure why Gnomes aren't just a Dwarven sub-race. I think somewhere along the way Dwarves inter-bred with TRUE Gnomes (forest gnomes?), who are MUCH shorter, and the newer gnome races were the result. A dwarf Elf would be extremely rare, and hence people thinking that such are impossible. Both races do not give birth frequently (unlike the cockaroach races like goblinoids and humans), so a child from such a union (in a 'one-night-stand scenario) would be nerely impossible. During some of the more forward thinking realms (Miyeritar, Cormanthor, etc) such a thing would have cropped up do to long-term relationships; but again incredibly rare so as to be practically unheard of. I would think that a human/Halfling crossbreeds would be very common, since halflings outside of Luiren tend to live in human cities. The only thing I can think of is that they are passed off as very short humans called 'jockeys'. A halfling with Elf blood would be the old-school tallfellow. It never actually comes out and says it in 2e, but it is implied. The same thing for Dwarf/Halfling mixes, the old Stout would have Dwarf blood. I suppose to continue this line of reasoning you could say that Hairfoots have human blood, but that was never implied. They were just the more common ones. Anyone wanting any of these crossbreeds could simply use the old terminolgy to identify the half-breeds IG. Dworcs I can't really see happening. However, Orcs are as 'fertile' as humans and Fey, and tend to breed with everything in sight, so it is possible, however improbable. Besides the normal animosity, both creatures find the other repulsive. It could happen, I suppose, in a war were the Orcs do their thing more as a way of demeaning prisoners. With the Dwarven lack of fertility this would have been like a million and one shot, but with the thunder-blessing a few more of these might be popping up. Orcs would probably find them amusing, but a Dwarf would not except them AT ALL into their society. The poor things would have to live amongst humans somewhere (or half-orcs). And this brings us to a combination almost unlikey as that above - the Elorc (Elf/Orc). Although Elves find Orcs ugly, Orcs don't mind how Elves look at all. This means any procreation from such a union would most likely be the product of rape, and Elves know certain herbs that will take care of that little problem. If the Elf woman can't bring herself to do it, then she would probably be forced to live in the wilderness with her child, most likely resulting in the death of both. Now, I could see a young Elf male getting his 'freak on' withan Orc female just for kicks (and he'd probably be drunk), and since she would have no revulsion towards the coupling she would likely keep the child and raise it as an exceptionally attractive half-orc; I believe this is where the half-orc (elf) Arrayan in the Sellswords series comes from. She lives in Palishuk because she must; Both Orcs and Elves would find her an abomination, and priest/shamans of both would have such children hunted down and exterminated. It could be an interesting plot-hook, with a group like Eldreth Veluuthra going after these 'things', while a second Orc group (Cleansers of Grumsh?) was doing the same. In fact, a meeting between a member of each while on a 'mission' would make an interesting short story... |
| Lord_Steve05-21-07, 02:17 PM | Markus to the rescue again!!!!! Your rock Markus!!! |
| Zardnaar05-23-07, 05:10 AM | The book of erotic fantasy has a table of commen D&D monsters and what they can crossbred with and the % chance something can get pregnant. Dragons and Celestials/Fiends are quite fertile apparently. |
| Zardnaar05-23-07, 05:20 AM | Just checked that book and it seems Elves can only breed with Celestials/Fiends, Dragons, some Fey, Humans and human like aquatic creatures. |
| Karsus the Mad05-23-07, 11:15 AM | *snip* So what do you think would be the racial benefits/penalties for: half orc/elf? half orc/dwarf? half orc/fey? And what do you think the aesthetic appearance of each would be? I'm curious as I have an Orc character from another gaming system that I'm trying to convert over to DnD (maybe even to FR) who's a rather skilled and powerful mage (level 88 in the other game) who's theme is runes. I'm trying to justify a high Int/Wis and knack for magic. Thus rather than a full Orc, I'm having him be the result of breeding. I'm going for archivist/runecaster, so Orc/dwarf fits somewhat. |
| Zandilar05-23-07, 07:24 PM | Heya, So what do you think would be the racial benefits/penalties for: half orc/elf? half orc/dwarf? half orc/fey? And what do you think the aesthetic appearance of each would be? Applying the KISS principle... Half-elf (mechanically) Half-orc (mechanically) Use the Half-Fey template from Fiend Folio on an orc. The first would probably be bulkier but no taller than a half elf, possibly with small tusks on the lower jaw. Their skintones would be dull, reflective of the orc parent (pale grey or green). They would probably have a rougher appearance than a standard half-elf on the whole, but more refined looking than a standard half-orc. The second would be shorter and a touch broader than a half orc, but taller than a dwarf. They would be more hairy than a standard half-orc, that's for sure! ;) They might have tusks in their lower jaw. Their skin would retain the dwarven parent's tones, but with hints of grey or green. On the whole a half orc/dwarf would be rougher and have a much less refined appearance than a half orc/elf. The last - well as per the half-fey template. (They can be startlingly beautiful or hiddeously ugly, and their fey nature is obvious just by looking at them.) |
| sleyvas05-25-07, 12:02 PM | Don't forget the recent ones that were in Dragon. There was the D'hinni (sp?) that was a mix of Djinn and halfling. There were the dwarves that had interbred with the fiery dwarves from the elemental planes. Elves had interbred with something else, then some goblin mix as well. |
| Shiftkitty05-26-07, 12:14 AM | Obscure bit of information for you. An old, old module had an orc/elf crossbreed as an NPC. He was a fantastic healer, and badly needed in the module. I don't recall the all of text, but he looked like an obese, bald elf with a sloping forehead and a slightly portruding lower jaw. The text I do remember declared that all such crossbreeds were sterile. |

As for halflings and Elves, FR already has that covered, the Tallfellow Halflings (edited out of 3.0 & 3.5, I'm afraid.) 2nd Ed. sources include the 'A Grand Tour of the Realms' book from the 2nd Ed. Forgotten Realms boxed set, as well as 'the Complete Book of Gnomes and Halflings', another 2nd Ed. sourcebook, as well as a spot on page 9 of 'Demihumans of the Realms'. Earlier Dragon Magazine issues postulated that these tall, slender halflings started out as a cross between Halflings and Elves that bred true, IIRC. Unfortunately, they were, well, not excised from Halflingdom, per se... When 3.0/3.5 came around, halflings quit being Hobbits with a more generic name. Dunno if Wizco was afraid of being sued by Mr. Tolkien's lawyers, or what, but suddenly instead of being tubby dudes with hairy feet, all halflings got slimmed down, with pointy ears, just like the tallfellows. So, if you want to see what a halfling crossed with an elf would look like, just look around the realms today, they're everywhere. |
