Hello anyone willing to help me out :) I am trying to put together a game that is mainly taking place in Calimshan and while I have all of the 3.5 books I have very few 2nd Ed. supplements and there is my problem. All of the material I have for Calimshan and its people are great but while reading the
2nd Ed. Calimport book(got it from the wizards site) I noticed the naming of the NPC's.. with the "el" and "yr" prefixs to the last names. Does anyone have any of the old supplements that can take a look and let me know if those are "son of" "daughter of" or if they mean something else entirely and if they are based on the sex of the character at all

Thanks to anyone who can help me out at all and I'll check back everyday :)

(Sorry for any spelling problems, I suck lol)

Personally, I wouldn't worry about the "el" and the "yr", if it were me I'd just make an exotic-sounding name that I liked. I know that probably doesn't come off as being too helpful, but I don't think it's necessary to make the name sound too real-world Arabic/Persian/whatever.

There are some sample names, I believe, in the 3E FRCS.

I dont mind making up the first and last names at all :) I do though like my games to be very story based and it helps to give the game a certain flavor if the NPC's have the sort of names that they would in that region..

Thank you though!

Oh, I'm not saying not to care about giving the PCs a certain flavor. But I don't think one needs the real-worldish nomenclature to do it. That's just my opinion though, I find the "el" and "yr" to be confusing, not having been brought up using a language with that kind of nomenclature.

Also, over time I've read many, many names of Calishites, and they are not all pseudo-Middle Eastern, nor do they all use "el" and "yr".

Thank you though!

You're welcome.:)

Very true! :) I think it is mostly the nobles of the region that tend to use them.

Possibly. Figure out how to use them (or, maybe someone who knows better than I on that subject can help you with that), or just leave them out, whatever you wish.:)

I Googled "Calishite names" and the first result was this. (http://goand.net/ro/w/Talk:Character_Creation_Guidelines_(2)) It's unofficial but looks nice. :)

The link sounds pretty much like what it stated in Empires of the Shining Sea, except that it didn't include the 'yi' addition for last names, which basically translated to 'of', so that you could have a name like Nasir yi Almraiven, or Asfora yi Sharess, which was fairly common for priests to adopt as I recall.

For Calshite names I would use Arabic names. That area is based on middle eastern culture

Artemis Entreri hails from Calimshan doesn't he? The name Entreri fits the area pretty good, sounding mediterranean but still pretty foreign to that as well.

-Though not exactly Calashite, the Arabian Adventures (Zakhara) Box Set has a little section about names.

-Simply looking up Arabic/Turkish names could also work.

Are you sure about that?

I could have sworn his mother, at least, was a native Calishite. And, if going by RotP, the man who is strongly implied to be his father is indeed his father, then said man was at least pretty well established in Calimshan.
Rinonalyrna Fathomlin

By the way, I'm not trying to say I think "Artemis" is a great name for a Calishite, much less any FR character. RAS has a penchant for strange, not particularly FR-ish names.

-Don't know, but if you just look at the guy, I fail to see any Calashite characteristics. Nor do I see any Calashite ethnic "quirks" (personal characteristics based on ethnicity- can't think of a better name).

I just chalk that up to Salvatore's writing. *shrug* I mean, this author created a Calishite pasha called "Pasha Pook".

Well, I know Wikipedia is not entirely the bastion of truthiness (thank you Mr. Colbert :D ), but according to his entry he was born & lived a few years of his childhood in Memnon, and raised & grew to adulthood in Calimport.

However, I guess just because somebody is born and raised in one place doesn't necessarily mean that they have any ethnic/cutural ties to that area. His family could have been immigrants.

I noticed that he had extremely tan skin (in contrast to my fair skin- no one listens when I say it's hereditary!), but ever since he consumed the life of a shade in the sirt story That Curious Sword, he's looked a little grayish.

given it's Alzhedo, it is a fairly close approximation to Arabic, Farsi, perhaps Pashtu.

-watch CNN, read the paper, any periodical w/ namedropping from that "troubled region" we keep hearing about of late. i used this for a Calimshite sorcerer, "Salmed al'Sahid".
-poke through historical references to the Crusades, Saladin, any Sacarean or Moorish allusions. something will pop up i'm sure

they never really fleshed it out terribly, as Calimsham is kind of an amalgamation of erathen middle eastern culture. it kinda' smacks of the Ottoman Empire (turkish), but has decidedly Arabian and Persian roots as well.

of course some kid gaming in Tehran is probably jumbling up cultural footnotes about Western Civ as we do of their's; confusing vikings, celts, saxxons etc. as your plain vanilla barbarian outlanders or other popular misconceptions. lost in the drift.

I was going to suggest that the mother took his name from her religion, which many people do. However, I remembered it incorrectly - I thought she worshipped Tymora, who was once part of Tyche. Tyche (Tymora/Beshaba) would probably have some old Greek-sounding names in her dogma (like Artemis), but since the woman worshipped Selune that throws my whole theory right out the window.

Also, the selling of Indulgences - especially for Selune - seemed VERY out of place in the Realms.

I have to agree with Markus that it didn't make much sense in a Realms story, even if overall the story was pretty good.

Reminds me of the more recent "CCC".

Depending on the cult.

Really, like Mask...

BTW, it was VERY RC Church Stig... VERY. :(

In fact, it may have even gone as far as Jim Jones and his CULT, with underage girls 'sevicing' priests so that the priests would be 'freed' from worldly concerns and "better able to tend their flock".

Or women paying for their 'indulgences' with their bodies. :yuck:

All in the name of Selune, no less....

-Not as long as I am a sundered aspect of a mighty archmage! :P

-I know that I've said this over and over, but sourcebooks (no matter how specific they are) can only go into so much detail about any given subject. Novels further flesh things out, and breathe life into the Realms. The fact that...certain authors and/or designers and/or businessmen want certain things to happen that are not always coherent with the way things should be shouldn't detract from the 90% of the other novels, which don't do this.

selunites condon (or will condon) the sale of indulgences?
wtf? that's heretical, even for CG faiths.
i know i mentioned martin luther before. you know where this is going...

i guess i don't see why. they have a huge faith. it's almost the state religion in Silverymoon and is widely accepted in many many locales. even if it weren't, many would pay homage to her to ward off Shar and what she represents. how are they hurting for cash? perhaps another motivation?
i guess they're just grooming Shar for bigger and better things given her murder of Mystra (w/ a little help anyway).
ironic that this started under a Calishite thread where she is widely revered.

Did anyone else feel the ending of the main story was 'rushed'?

I would have preferred more about what happened in the Bloodstone Lands. He built-up this big story in the previous book, and then rushed to finish it just so he could get Artemis back to Calimshan.

It was like he was trying to fit two seperate novels into one book - it was weird. Maybe WotC wouldn't let him do the Calimsham one, so he 'forced it' into the last few chapters of the other book he was supposed to do?

It just all felt very 'wrong' to me...
