| avalonseer10-30-07, 07:41 PM | Hello anyone willing to help me out :) I am trying to put together a game that is mainly taking place in Calimshan and while I have all of the 3.5 books I have very few 2nd Ed. supplements and there is my problem. All of the material I have for Calimshan and its people are great but while reading the 2nd Ed. Calimport book(got it from the wizards site) I noticed the naming of the NPC's.. with the "el" and "yr" prefixs to the last names. Does anyone have any of the old supplements that can take a look and let me know if those are "son of" "daughter of" or if they mean something else entirely and if they are based on the sex of the character at all  Thanks to anyone who can help me out at all and I'll check back everyday :) (Sorry for any spelling problems, I suck lol) |
| Rinonalyrna Fathomlin10-30-07, 08:32 PM | Personally, I wouldn't worry about the "el" and the "yr", if it were me I'd just make an exotic-sounding name that I liked. I know that probably doesn't come off as being too helpful, but I don't think it's necessary to make the name sound too real-world Arabic/Persian/whatever. There are some sample names, I believe, in the 3E FRCS. |
| avalonseer10-30-07, 08:39 PM | I dont mind making up the first and last names at all :) I do though like my games to be very story based and it helps to give the game a certain flavor if the NPC's have the sort of names that they would in that region.. Thank you though! |
| Rinonalyrna Fathomlin10-30-07, 08:46 PM | I dont mind making up the first and last names at all :) I do though like my games to be very story based and it helps to give the game a certain flavor if the NPC's have the sort of names that they would in that region.. Oh, I'm not saying not to care about giving the PCs a certain flavor. But I don't think one needs the real-worldish nomenclature to do it. That's just my opinion though, I find the "el" and "yr" to be confusing, not having been brought up using a language with that kind of nomenclature. Also, over time I've read many, many names of Calishites, and they are not all pseudo-Middle Eastern, nor do they all use "el" and "yr". Thank you though! You're welcome.:) |
| avalonseer10-30-07, 08:51 PM | Very true! :) I think it is mostly the nobles of the region that tend to use them. |
| Rinonalyrna Fathomlin10-30-07, 08:52 PM | Very true! :) I think it is mostly the nobles of the region that tend to use them. Possibly. Figure out how to use them (or, maybe someone who knows better than I on that subject can help you with that), or just leave them out, whatever you wish.:) |
| Mula10-31-07, 01:33 AM | I Googled "Calishite names" and the first result was this. (http://goand.net/ro/w/Talk:Character_Creation_Guidelines_(2)) It's unofficial but looks nice. :) |
| Stigger10-31-07, 02:36 AM | The link sounds pretty much like what it stated in Empires of the Shining Sea, except that it didn't include the 'yi' addition for last names, which basically translated to 'of', so that you could have a name like Nasir yi Almraiven, or Asfora yi Sharess, which was fairly common for priests to adopt as I recall. |
| Bullet0632010-31-07, 04:33 AM | For Calshite names I would use Arabic names. That area is based on middle eastern culture |
| avalonseer10-31-07, 09:17 AM | Thank you all so much!:D |
| Suin Bahhar10-31-07, 11:09 AM | Artemis Entreri hails from Calimshan doesn't he? The name Entreri fits the area pretty good, sounding mediterranean but still pretty foreign to that as well. |
| Lord Karsus10-31-07, 12:56 PM | -Though not exactly Calashite, the Arabian Adventures (Zakhara) Box Set has a little section about names. -Simply looking up Arabic/Turkish names could also work. |
| Lord Karsus10-31-07, 12:57 PM | Artemis Entreri hails from Calimshan doesn't he? The name Entreri fits the area pretty good, sounding mediterranean but still pretty foreign to that as well. -Genetically/ethnically, he's not Calashite, which means that his family (and his surname) came from somewhere else. |
| Rinonalyrna Fathomlin10-31-07, 01:11 PM | -Genetically/ethnically, he's not Calashite, which means that his family (and his surname) came from somewhere else. Are you sure about that? I could have sworn his mother, at least, was a native Calishite. And, if going by RotP, the man who is strongly implied to be his father is indeed his father, then said man was at least pretty well established in Calimshan. |
| Rinonalyrna Fathomlin10-31-07, 01:14 PM | By the way, I'm not trying to say I think "Artemis" is a great name for a Calishite, much less any FR character. RAS has a penchant for strange, not particularly FR-ish names. |
| Lord Karsus10-31-07, 01:26 PM | Are you sure about that? I could have sworn his mother, at least, was a native Calishite. And, if going by RotP, the man who is strongly implied to be his father is indeed his father, then said man was at least pretty well established in Calimshan. -Don't know, but if you just look at the guy, I fail to see any Calashite characteristics. Nor do I see any Calashite ethnic "quirks" (personal characteristics based on ethnicity- can't think of a better name). |
| Rinonalyrna Fathomlin10-31-07, 01:49 PM | -Don't know, but if you just look at the guy, I fail to see any Calashite characteristics. Nor do I see any Calashite ethnic "quirks" (personal characteristics based on ethnicity- can't think of a better name). I just chalk that up to Salvatore's writing. *shrug* I mean, this author created a Calishite pasha called "Pasha Pook". |
| Stigger10-31-07, 03:49 PM | One does get the impression that he does like laughing under his hat at his readers at times... or a warped sense of the whimsical. |
| Lord Karsus10-31-07, 05:58 PM | I just chalk that up to Salvatore's writing. *shrug* I mean, this author created a Calishite pasha called "Pasha Pook". -Pasha Pook (heh) at least had Calashite traits, characteristics and mannerisms in the short time we knew him, though. Know what I mean? |
| Rinonalyrna Fathomlin10-31-07, 09:00 PM | -Pasha Pook (heh) at least had Calashite traits, characteristics and mannerisms in the short time we knew him, though. Know what I mean? I think you're right...it's been so long since I read The Halfling's Gem that I barely remember him, though.:D |
| Mean Eyed Cat10-31-07, 09:44 PM | -Genetically/ethnically, he's not Calashite, which means that his family (and his surname) came from somewhere else. Well, I know Wikipedia is not entirely the bastion of truthiness (thank you Mr. Colbert :D ), but according to his entry he was born & lived a few years of his childhood in Memnon, and raised & grew to adulthood in Calimport. However, I guess just because somebody is born and raised in one place doesn't necessarily mean that they have any ethnic/cutural ties to that area. His family could have been immigrants. |
| Mean Eyed Cat10-31-07, 09:48 PM | <stupid double post> Edit. See this thread: http://forums.gleemax.com/showthread.php?t=813918 |
| Passivearmada11-02-07, 11:21 PM | -Don't know, but if you just look at the guy, I fail to see any Calashite characteristics. Nor do I see any Calashite ethnic "quirks" (personal characteristics based on ethnicity- can't think of a better name). I noticed that he had extremely tan skin (in contrast to my fair skin- no one listens when I say it's hereditary!), but ever since he consumed the life of a shade in the sirt story That Curious Sword, he's looked a little grayish. |
| 1 ton ghost11-03-07, 02:13 PM | given it's Alzhedo, it is a fairly close approximation to Arabic, Farsi, perhaps Pashtu. -watch CNN, read the paper, any periodical w/ namedropping from that "troubled region" we keep hearing about of late. i used this for a Calimshite sorcerer, "Salmed al'Sahid". -poke through historical references to the Crusades, Saladin, any Sacarean or Moorish allusions. something will pop up i'm sure they never really fleshed it out terribly, as Calimsham is kind of an amalgamation of erathen middle eastern culture. it kinda' smacks of the Ottoman Empire (turkish), but has decidedly Arabian and Persian roots as well. of course some kid gaming in Tehran is probably jumbling up cultural footnotes about Western Civ as we do of their's; confusing vikings, celts, saxxons etc. as your plain vanilla barbarian outlanders or other popular misconceptions. lost in the drift. |
| MarkusTay6311-03-07, 02:39 PM | I was going to suggest that the mother took his name from her religion, which many people do. However, I remembered it incorrectly - I thought she worshipped Tymora, who was once part of Tyche. Tyche (Tymora/Beshaba) would probably have some old Greek-sounding names in her dogma (like Artemis), but since the woman worshipped Selune that throws my whole theory right out the window. Also, the selling of Indulgences - especially for Selune - seemed VERY out of place in the Realms. |
| Lord Karsus11-03-07, 09:20 PM | Also, the selling of Indulgences - especially for Selune - seemed VERY out of place in the Realms. -Well, it made an interesting read. |
| Stigger11-04-07, 10:44 AM | They introduced indulgences? Bah... |
| Rinonalyrna Fathomlin11-04-07, 06:52 PM | They introduced indulgences? Bah... Yes. I have to agree with Markus that it didn't make much sense in a Realms story, even if overall the story was pretty good. Reminds me of the more recent "CCC". |
| Stigger11-04-07, 07:18 PM | One wonders if the author realized the actual history behind indulgences, and what they helped lead to in the Roman Catholic Church... |
| 1 ton ghost11-04-07, 07:59 PM | yes, helping them realize such limited vision... cannibalizing Martin Luther and the Reformation in the Catholic Church has been exceedingly popular through the ages. so much for originality. |
| The Ubbergeek11-06-07, 01:55 AM | Indulgences MAKE sense... Depending on the cult. Really, like Mask... |
| Stigger11-06-07, 01:57 AM | Sure, for Mask, or maybe some really mercenary clergy of Waukeen, but Selune? Hell, I can't even see Banites doing it... |
| MarkusTay6311-06-07, 03:40 PM | BTW, it was VERY RC Church Stig... VERY. :( In fact, it may have even gone as far as Jim Jones and his CULT, with underage girls 'sevicing' priests so that the priests would be 'freed' from worldly concerns and "better able to tend their flock". Or women paying for their 'indulgences' with their bodies. :yuck: All in the name of Selune, no less.... |
| Lord Karsus11-06-07, 04:21 PM | In fact, it may have even gone as far as Jim Jones and his CULT, with underage girls 'sevicing' priests so that the priests would be 'freed' from worldly concerns and "better able to tend their flock". -That's exactly what happened in the novel. |
| Stigger11-06-07, 04:52 PM | Yet one more gaping reason why Novels should be utterly divorced from canon... |
| Lord Karsus11-06-07, 07:30 PM | Yet one more gaping reason why Novels should be utterly divorced from canon... -Not as long as I am a sundered aspect of a mighty archmage! :P -I know that I've said this over and over, but sourcebooks (no matter how specific they are) can only go into so much detail about any given subject. Novels further flesh things out, and breathe life into the Realms. The fact that...certain authors and/or designers and/or businessmen want certain things to happen that are not always coherent with the way things should be shouldn't detract from the 90% of the other novels, which don't do this. |
| Stigger11-07-07, 04:40 PM | Sorry, can't quite get behind the thought... probably why I don't bother with most novels though. :P |
| 1 ton ghost11-08-07, 11:01 AM | selunites condon (or will condon) the sale of indulgences? wtf? that's heretical, even for CG faiths. i know i mentioned martin luther before. you know where this is going... i guess i don't see why. they have a huge faith. it's almost the state religion in Silverymoon and is widely accepted in many many locales. even if it weren't, many would pay homage to her to ward off Shar and what she represents. how are they hurting for cash? perhaps another motivation? i guess they're just grooming Shar for bigger and better things given her murder of Mystra (w/ a little help anyway). ironic that this started under a Calishite thread where she is widely revered. |
| Lord Karsus11-08-07, 01:16 PM | Sorry, can't quite get behind the thought... probably why I don't bother with most novels though. :P -Well, you're you and I'm me. I won't try to force my beliefs on you, Stig. |
| Stigger11-08-07, 03:07 PM | Heh, wouldn't work anyway... my wife would get murderous for the competition. :D I won't go into the rest of my thoughts on indulgences... suffice to say I think it's probably the worst idea I've yet heard for religion in the Realms. Even worse than this whole little Divine Melodrama with Try, Helm, and Tymora. |
| Storm_Silverhand11-08-07, 04:05 PM | Heya, In fact, it may have even gone as far as Jim Jones and his CULT, with underage girls 'sevicing' priests so that the priests would be 'freed' from worldly concerns and "better able to tend their flock". -That's exactly what happened in the novel. Hang on a second, which novel is this?! |
| Rinonalyrna Fathomlin11-08-07, 04:12 PM | Heya, Hang on a second, which novel is this?! Road of the Patriarch, by R. A. Salvatore. Check it out.;) |
| Stigger11-08-07, 05:10 PM | Well named then I see... yet another reason to avoid RAS... |
| MarkusTay6311-08-07, 05:34 PM | Did anyone else feel the ending of the main story was 'rushed'? I would have preferred more about what happened in the Bloodstone Lands. He built-up this big story in the previous book, and then rushed to finish it just so he could get Artemis back to Calimshan. It was like he was trying to fit two seperate novels into one book - it was weird. Maybe WotC wouldn't let him do the Calimsham one, so he 'forced it' into the last few chapters of the other book he was supposed to do? It just all felt very 'wrong' to me... |
| Lord Karsus11-08-07, 07:28 PM | Heh, wouldn't work anyway... my wife would get murderous for the competition. :D -That's right, that's right. And, we've already established that I don't want to mess with She-Stigger. Did anyone else feel the ending of the main story was 'rushed'? -Agreed. -Jarlaxle was like, "Yep, we have a foothold in the area now. Could come in handy. Well, come on Entreri, Athrogate, Kimmulriel...What? Artemis, you hate me, and will kill me if we ever cross paths? Well, fare the well. Come on, Kimmuriel, Athrogate..." -The End. |
| Rinonalyrna Fathomlin11-08-07, 08:50 PM | Did anyone else feel the ending of the main story was 'rushed'? Yeah, it was. |
| Gray Richardson11-08-07, 09:49 PM | Below is a list of names from various sources that I keep. F stands for female, M indicates a Male name, and L = Last name, while Tribe indicates a Tribal Name. | Storm_Silverhand11-09-07, 05:55 AM | Heya, Road of the Patriarch, by R. A. Salvatore. Check it out.;) I knew there was a reason why I didn't like RAS. The way he names his characters is just one of the symptoms of the problem. But I'm not going to go into detail, since that would probably go against the code of conduct for the forums. |
| Lord Karsus11-09-07, 12:02 PM | I knew there was a reason why I didn't like RAS. The way he names his characters is just one of the symptoms of the problem. | Rinonalyrna Fathomlin11-09-07, 01:17 PM | -Say no more. I'm sure that 75% of us know exactly what you are alluding to. Indeed, that's correct.:) |
| Stigger11-09-07, 03:42 PM | Yes... doubtful it'd be much worse than blistering my ears took at the hands of my wife exploding when she heard that... no RAS left in the house actually. Seriously, she tossed it all. |

| Lord Karsus11-09-07, 07:24 PM | Deadly serious... thought she was gonna try to set it on fire for a few minutes. No joke there. -Ladies and gentlemen, this is why I, Karsus, Mage of Mages, Wizard of Wizards, fear She-Stigger. -Though, I can understand where she is coming from. In a few days, I am going to burn my Mets cap, in a sacrifice to appease the baseball gods. |
| MarkusTay6311-09-07, 08:15 PM | Go Dodgers. :P |
| Stigger11-10-07, 05:46 PM | Everyone who knows her fears her... except my best friend, who is just as scary. Probably why I used to date her though... which says something about me, even if I'm not really certain I want to think about what. |
| Lord Karsus11-11-07, 05:44 PM | Go Dodgers. :P -Only if they were still in Brooklyn...:( ...which says something about me, even if I'm not really certain I want to think about what. -You need protection? |

| Stigger11-11-07, 06:57 PM | I was happy then... I'm always happy, unless I'm sad, in which case someone dies, and then I'm happy again... yep, just me in my own little happy place... yes. |
