I'm reading Champions of Ruin and I would like to know if somebody ever tried to incorporate any champions of evil in their campaign

Aumvor the Undying
Eltab
Soneillon
Dendar the Night Serpent
Kezef the Chaos hound
Ityak-Ortheel the Elf eater
Bazim-Gorag
Malkizid

if you did,it would be nice if you would share it with us, the why/when/who's/etc.

Compared to what they'd normally be, yeah. I can't imagine involving any of them before a near-epic game, even as masterminds.

Never used him, but Bazim Gorag is in a dungeon module. I've used the idea behind Eltab in the past (while he was still bound, the whole map destroying thing). Then there was the module in Spellbound.

I think a campaign surrounding Soneillon would be VERY interesting, especially if you mix in Eltab and Orcus' worshippers and the balor Ndulu.

Prison of the Firebringer is in Dungeon 101 I think, its a great module...I highly recommend it.

My epic fighter is actually one-on-oning against Dendar currently

o.O a single fighter against the Night Serpent? What level is he?

Because if it's under 45, I think you're doing it wrong.

-Being as that she is supposed to be the harbinger that heralds the end of the world, I think even that would be too low.

She's CR 26. A party of 26th level characters should be able to take her with little trouble.

-As Boda said, "dendar and kezef could be used to some circus atraction thing. They're really lame in that book."

-Their write-ups in the book are quite attrocious. Dendar, as I alluded to, is supposed to be the harbinger of the end of the world, who is on par with Ubtao, who she is destined to fight, if the prophecies are true.

I would echo that recommendation. If I end up running a campaign again the North I will definitely use both the adventure and the Firebringer himself.

I am using Malkizid as my behind-the-scenes BBEG in a current Dalelands campaign. Ityak-Ortheel could also figure in this campaign later on.

Eltab is pencilled in as a significant figure in the on-again, off-again campaign I'm running in the Great Dale and the East (titled Elder Evils of the East). Soneillon is likely to make an appearance in due course.

I think Dendar and Kezef would work well if updated with some of the ideas presented in Elder Evils but I am not sure if I would ever use them in a campaign. Aumvor is also unlikely to be used by me.

First, a solo fighter and a party are very different things. Second, CRs of unique beings are rather pumped down. Remember that Asmodeus, whom not even gods want to challenge in his own plane, has a CR of 32, and most of the other Archfiends have CR in the 20-30 range. Second, remember that Kezef, whom it took a trio of deities to subdue by trickery (not kill!) has a bare 21.

Dendar (only a glance)
Maeldur Et Kavurik
Miska the Wolfspider
Kezef passed by once
Nidhogg
Eltab (adventure in Spellbound)
Baba Yaga
Cyric
Ssseth
Githyanki queen
Nisvim

but mostly behind the scenes

--Their write-ups in the book are quite attrocious.

Making it worse, was that in the same book we have Aumvor, with a higher CR then an elder evil who has existed since the beginning of time...I really felt like they shortchanged the older powers in terms of CR. Even Malkizid seemed poorly statted. This is the first Solar to follow Araushnee into the Demonweb pits, and if I recall, actively helped her betray Corellon. I mean didn't Dendar rip up Gond's non-magic armor that he built for Cyric's inquisitors?

As for Kezef, I mean the thing bit Tyr's hand off!! That alone is worth a CR30 in my book.

That said, the Aumvor writeup was very nice. :D

If anyone is interested, I have a full detailed examination of all CR30+ NPC's...

I had a campaign that went into the low 20's, and it used Eltab.

The plot was basiclly this; a Nar Sorcerer had rediscovered the ways of the Demon Binder, and was using his power to re-unite the Nar tribes and become the new Nentyarch. However, to bring legitimacy to his rule, he needed a symbol of his right to power. So he quested to re-forge the Crown of Narfell. The PC's tried and failed to thwart him in this. However he ended up infuriating the royal family of Impiltur (whom he attacked and stole half the crown from).

In retaliation, Impiltur and Damaara went to war against the re-united Narfell, and were also aided by the witches of Rashamen. None of them were to happy to have a kindom of demon worshippers next door, and decided to end the threat before it could go any further. Fighting a hopeless battle on 3 fronts, the Sorcerer got desperate and started opening gates to the abyss. In the final climatic battle Eltab himself came through a gate.

I usually don't use Iconic PC's, but in this one I did use Eltab and Gareth Dragon's Bane.

Can "Gate" summon creatures on the same plane? Kinda like a request (or demand) for teleport or something? I never thought about it that way...

Because Eltab was anchored to the Adamantine Binding and permanently on Toril until it (the binding found deep within the Citadel of Conjurers) is destroyed with the magic sword Hadryllis.

Unless your binding's destruction had been done already, or Eltab's imprisonment isn't the case in your Realms. Regardless I'd like to know about that possible use for "Gate".

I was kind of under the impression that Eltab was imprisoned in the demoncysts. My understanding of Demoncysts are that they are shards of the Hidden Layer that are anchored and connected to Toril. Even though they touch Toril in some places, they are still extra planar.

So the Sorcerer used a gate to call Eltab from one of these cysts, and allow him to enter this plane.
Taita_of_Imaskar

01-18-08, 07:52 PM
Well from what I can tell, hes not restricted to demon cysts, his current residence is the Citadel of Conjurers, which to tell you the truth, I don't know if it is a demon cyst or not... But I'm sure he is free to roam the Realms as he sees fit.

But thats a take on it, even though I wouldn't consider them extra planar, just some place on the prime that touches the Hidden Layer.

Edit: I'm pretty sure the cysts are in Toril, spreading throughout what used to be Narfell and neighboring lands, some actually being underground also. You can walk into a demon cyst and out of it without having to employ any magic.

If you wanna have some real fun, incorperate a campaign with Dendar, Kezef, and the Elf Eater, and have some insane cult try to merge the three to create some sort of apocalyptic creature, and in the end, it turns out the cult was being manipulated by something even more sinister...;)

It would be like the Ebon Triad in Faerun!

-Eltab is bound by the "Adamantine Binding" in the "Citadel of Conjurers" The Epic Greatsword "Hydrallis"(sp) is the only thing that can break the binding. Because a "Demon Lord" is bound so is parts of his realm. The lands that make up ancient "Narfell" are also called "The Demon Lands". If "Eltab" is defeated and the binding is not destroyed, he reapears in a demon cyst. The Sword "Hydrallis"(sp) is detailed in "Champions of Valor". Eltab is one of my favorite villains in the Realms. I found out about him in "Champions of Ruin." Which BTW is one of my favorite Realms books to date.:D

Aumvor the Undying
Eltab
Soneillon
Dendar the Night Serpent
Kezef the Chaos hound
Ityak-Ortheel the Elf eater
Bazim-Gorag
Malkizid

if you did,it would be nice if you would share it with us, the why/when/who's/etc.

Aumvor - I'm going to use him in a current campaign along with the Beastmaster of Dekanter.
Eltab - used him in the old Spellbound adventures (converted to 3e)
Bazim-Gorag - going to run the Dungeon adventure w/ him in it.
Malkizid - I used him in my fey'ri Seven Citadels War campaign. One of the PC's (a half-fiend sun elf sorcerer) became a mystic theurge of him and tried to convert other members of the house to his cause. I also loved his prismatic dispelling ability so much that I made it into an epic spell along with several other prismatic spells [made them Aryvandar high magic].

Dendar the night serpent - I used her as the finally in one of my epic campaigns. This was before the stats came out for her but I did a hack conversion of her from 2ed [the pc's were ecl 33]. Basically, the pc's were twined souled beings (the other part of their souls were shadow dragons). This occured from a ritual done by a philosophy of sharn that were shadow magic users [the philosophy was exterminated except for two]. The point was to make three uber powerful spell components (the pc's). The sharn wanted to bind the Night Serpent to destroy the phearimm once and for all. One pc to block divine notice at the gates of night in chult (only Shar would know). One pc to open the gates of night. One pc to bind Dendar (the sharn would return her once she destroyed the phearimm). During the ritual the pc's broke out (no one wants to be a spell component) but it was after the gate had been open and Dendar was coming. To sum it up, the battle lasted 4-6 hours, involved avatars of Bane, Lathander, and Talos, and the actual physical presence of Ubtao and Shar [shar was really behind it all including having the PCs break free]. In the end, Lathander was destroyed by Dendar [this was the fullfilment of the prophecy were dendar devoured the "sun"] and then the weakened Dendar was killed by the PCs. The world decended into madness due to the inability of mortals to forget their nightmares and the world was returned to oblivion (just as shar had planned it). Just to mess with them a bit more, I had Ao intervene and command Tymora to remove her luck from the pc's in one battle when they were 3rd level [they were killed by a group of grodd goblins including the goblin that was one of their apprentices].

IF I was to use Dendar again, I would defenitely buff her up beforehand.
Taita_of_Imaskar

01-21-08, 07:32 PM
Maybe Dendar needs a buff, but don't forget its save or die Nightmare Venom fortitude save DC 52... even for epic characters it could be really tough to make, plus if you fail you need a wish/miracle to roll for a will DC 52...

Dendar is not that shabby on 3e.

I also used Eltab based on his appearance in the Spellbound adventure.

My players were 26th or 27th level. I believe I gave him more hp's and better damage bonus but left him undisturbed otherwise.

No plans to use anyone else from that book. I did use two Epic spells from the book but my players, crafty bastards that they are, managed to evade both effects. Terrefic battle scenes,. :)

What do you think about Asmdeus or Mephistopheles?Has anyone of you tried to incorprate them in a FR camaign?
Alleran

I haven't used either Asmodeus or Mephistopheles - IMO, they should be left for stories where the characters are at least pushing DvR 0-5 or thereabouts (I credit Asmodeus and Meph with being far, far more powerful than their statblock actually makes them).

A group of characters (At the time: level 20 Wizard/Archmage + Chosen of Mystra, level 19 Cleric of Mystra, level 19 Paladin/Triadic Knight, level 19 Druid, level 20 Ranger/Horizon Walker) ran into Kezef. Since I wasn't happy with the stats he'd been given in the book, I boosted the Chaos Hound back up to where I thought he should be.

Needless to say, he utterly blitzed the entire group - the only reason Kezef didn't kill them right there and then was because Mystra intervened to save her Chosen. Basically, the Triadic Knight decided to attack Kezef (which his character would do). Kezef was never really even intended to be very major (more of a passing reference), but when they started the fight, it became clear to the lot of them that they had managed to screw things up royally.

The schemes of Aumvor may well be hitting them soon. I've made references to a possible lich in the background of the story (a powerful one), but didn't think to give Aumvor the role until I started scrolling through this thread, so I may have to modify things slightly.

Make sure you fully express the details of Aumvor's tubbiness. Have him being carried around on a throne by hobgoblins or something.

I just picked up Elder Evils, and it does have a few nice low epic encounters.

Pandorym in particular has significance in the realms.
