| justinthebig09-21-07, 02:36 AM | I just purchased the Legends of Drizzt Scenario pack and came across something I am uncertain of. The Drizzt mini card has a quote on it where Drizzt states he is a ranger of Gwaeron Windstrom. I am only just now reading the Thousand Orcs and the following novels so can someone say if he changes his faith somewhere along the line? Oh yeah, I missed the Sea of Swords novel before starting on TTO. Drizzt has always been a ranger of Mielikki and I'm really curious to know if he has changed faiths or if someone in the minis team stuffed up? |
| Strife02609-21-07, 05:53 AM | He is a ranger of Mielikki, he has never changed his affiliation with Mielikki in any of the books. |
| Lord Karsus09-21-07, 11:30 AM | -Someone made a dumb error... |
| MarkusTay6309-21-07, 11:53 AM | Yes, the people who make the minis are not gamers - they are 9 yr old Korean kids chained to worktables. :P |
| Rinonalyrna Fathomlin09-21-07, 01:14 PM | You know, it's possible to follow more than one god. But still, Drizzt's been associated with Mielikki in the novels far more often than with Gwaeron (heck, that may have been only once or twice in the early novels), so if you must choose, I'd go with Mielikki. Still, Drizzt's not very conventionally religious to begin with. |
| MarkusTay6309-21-07, 02:12 PM | Since he doesn't recieve spells, it really doesn't matter who he's praying to this week. :P |
| Mula09-21-07, 05:03 PM | Gwaeron's church is very very closely related to Mielikki's. If I remember it right, most of Gwaeron's "priests" are actually rangers - the faith is more about emulating the deity rather than worshiping him via prayers and all that jazz. I could very well see Drizzt as one of Gwaeron's rangers. Changing to him from Mielikki wouldn't be a big leap of faith (:p) because they're both so similar and closely related. In fact, I think Gwaeron's church is just a part of Mielikki's, instead of being one of its own. |
| Edain Shadowstar09-22-07, 05:46 AM | It's interesting that this issue should turn up now, considering the other day I was paging through the Icewind Dale Trilogy, specifically the Crystal Shard, and noticed that when Drizzt introduces himself to Errtu he identifies himself as "A ranger humbly serving Gwaeron Windstrom, hero of the goddess Mielikki". I found this odd at the time considering Drizzt has never to my knowledge mentioned any affiliation with Gwaeron before or after that I can recall. Perhaps this is where the "error" came from? |

Well, do realize that the Crystal Shard was the first Drizzt book--ever.:) There was no "before" in terms of publishing order. But yes, that's the only book I recall Drizzt mentioning his devotion to Gwaeron, although as said before Gwaeron himself is already associated with Mielikki. |
| ElberethSilverleaf09-22-07, 10:35 PM | I thought that Gwaerun was the blind ranger who took Drizzit in and became his lover/mentor until his death? |
| Lord Karsus09-22-07, 10:43 PM | I thought that Gwaerun was the blind ranger who took Drizzit in and became his lover/mentor until his death? -No, that was Montolio Desomethingorother. |
| ElberethSilverleaf09-22-07, 10:46 PM | -No, that was Montolio Desomethingorother. Ah... it's been a looong time since I read the Salvatore books that were actually still worth reading. |
| Lord Karsus09-22-07, 10:58 PM | Ah... it's been a looong time since I read the Salvatore books that were actually still worth reading. -They are all worth reading, as they add to the continued "living" Realms. That's how I look at it. I don't particularly like Drizzt, and the entire 'Company of the Hall', but I still buy all of the novels (in softcover!) just to keep up. |
| Straploknight09-22-07, 11:01 PM | -No, that was Montolio Desomethingorother. Montolio DeBrouche or something like that, Mooshie was his nickname. |
| Straploknight09-22-07, 11:04 PM | -Someone made a dumb error... Bah.... your rumor mongering skills are weak grasshopper, this was no accident. Another dead god has been revealed! :P |
| Diffan09-24-07, 07:49 AM | Since he doesn't recieve spells, it really doesn't matter who he's praying to this week. :P Why doesn't he recieve spells? Doesn't his write up in the FRCS have him prepare detect plants and animals? |
| Andyr09-24-07, 11:59 AM | I think Markus was noting the fact that he rarely/never casts spells in the 20-odd novels he's been in. |

| Derren S.09-25-07, 09:33 AM | So does that mean that [Grand history of the Realms/4E Spoiler] Drizzt is no automatic "You survive Mystras Death/the Spellplague" card for Mielikki? |
| Leon_Lionheart09-26-07, 12:48 PM | So does that mean that [Grand history of the Realms/4E Spoiler] Drizzt is no automatic "You survive Mystras Death/the Spellplague" card for Mielikki? One question about Mielikki: are all druids servants of Mielikki, or is Mielikki merely one source of druidic magic? 'Cause if the former's true, then we'll be seeing few Druids in Fourth Edition if Mielikki kicks the bucket. |
| Rinonalyrna Fathomlin09-26-07, 01:55 PM | There are other gods druids can serve besides Mielikki. Heck, it's probable that more druids serve Silvanus (a Greater Power) than Mielikki, although plenty serve both. |
| Derren S.09-26-07, 03:06 PM | Also there is a druid in the realms who gets divine magic without deity. Maybe that is the future of divine casters in the FR? |
| Rinonalyrna Fathomlin09-26-07, 03:13 PM | Also there is a druid in the realms who gets divine magic without deity. Who would that be? |
| Andyr09-27-07, 01:25 PM | Lossarwyn, the Ice Lich. My spelling may be off. (Or at least, the druid thinks they get divine magic without a deity.) |
| Rinonalyrna Fathomlin09-27-07, 02:43 PM | Lossarwyn, the Ice Lich. My spelling may be off. (Or at least, the druid thinks they get divine magic without a deity.) That's probably the case. I thought it was an established fact that all divine magic in the Realms comes from a deity, regardless of what the recepient thinks. |
| Arbourean09-28-07, 01:40 AM | Gwaeron was mentioned as Drizzt's patron during the Icewind Dale trilogy, but later it was changed almost exclusively to Mielikki (and it would not be the first time RAS would change names, etc in the course of the ongoing series). Speaking of rangers, why does he have goblins listed as his favoured enemy? He faces orcs and other creatures far more often. |
| Diffan09-28-07, 09:17 AM | Speaking of rangers, why does he have goblins listed as his favoured enemy? He faces orcs and other creatures far more often. True, but in the short story Dark Mirror it says specifically that goblins are among his most hated enemies. I'm guessing it's going directly from that. |
| Rinonalyrna Fathomlin09-28-07, 12:44 PM | Speaking of rangers, why does he have goblins listed as his favoured enemy? He faces orcs and other creatures far more often. Well, the books don't tell us everything.:) It's possible he fights goblins more often than any other type of enemy, and the novels don't really cover that (I, for one, wouldn't want to read about every goblin fight Drizzt gets involved in; I think the books are overstuffed with combat as it is). |
| Andyr09-28-07, 04:01 PM | (and it would not be the first time RAS would change names, etc in the course of the ongoing series). Yeah, didn't one character go from Rai-Guy to Rai'gi or something for no apparant reason in consecutive novels? That always confused me a little. |
| Rinonalyrna Fathomlin09-28-07, 04:19 PM | Yeah, didn't one character go from Rai-Guy to Rai'gi or something for no apparant reason in consecutive novels? That always confused me a little. Yes, that character's name has been spelled two, perhaps three different ways in the novels. |
| msatran09-28-07, 09:57 PM | This is actually classic Savage Frontier lore and is accurate. If you are a Ranger, and you are in the North/Savage Frontier, the following things occur. It is assumed by you and other rangers that if you worship Meilikki, since Gwaeron is a hero of the north, you are Gwaeron's servant in this matter, in the same way that a Knight would serve his lord. Furthermore, if you are a sufficiently high level (Well Known) Ranger, outside of any city or other declared Demense of a particular town, it is YOU who are the law, and YOU get to decide what happens. No lie. This caused no end of roleplay problems in my game. Gavin, Paladin of Torm: "You can't kill those people without a fair trial." Princess Raisha Djenispol in Exile: "Actually, I'm the law. I witnessed them committing a crime. I CAN." In other areas of the world, the laws are a little more clear. In the North, any area of wilderness, according to established lore, your party Ranger may, if he or she is of sufficient level, be judge, jury, and executioner. Richard Baker Must Be Stopped! |
| GothicDan09-28-07, 10:11 PM | They need some more proper Wizardly judges. Silly non-spellcasters. Also, Msatran - I love the Batman quote in your sig. Excellent movie, overall. |
| msatran09-29-07, 04:12 PM | Thank you, Dan. And Rangers ARE spellcasters. Richard Baker Must Be Stopped! |
| GothicDan09-29-07, 08:00 PM | Come now! They're not PROPER spellcasters. *Sniff, wizard.* |
| Rinonalyrna Fathomlin09-29-07, 08:00 PM | Thank you, Dan. And Rangers ARE spellcasters. Only part-time.;) |
