| Drath'ri02-27-07, 03:16 PM | What would be the estimated population of Faerun, or even all of Toril at 1372 DR? thanks in advance |
| Old Sage02-27-07, 06:52 PM | Pg. 98 of the FRCS states that Faerun is collectively home to more than sixty eight million (68,000,000) inhabitants. Remember also that 3e material basically streamlined Realms population numbers. Essentially, some locales and regions actually lost numbers, while other locations in fact gained numbers, due mostly to the use of the population charts published in the 3e/3.5e DMG's. I'd say that the population figure itself likely only refers to the races living on the surface of Faerûn. I noted that the Underdark doesn't actually appear to be included in the referenced quote, nor do any aquatic areas, like the Sea of Fallen Stars for example. Additionally, I'd say ONLY the civilized races were included in the above reference, simply because those are the ones that would be regularly counted in a census. It's likely that the numbers of uncivilized races like orcs and goblins, which are almost always in constant flux, probably don't number highly enough at any one particular time to make the effort of counting them, necessary. |
| BrennonGoldeye02-27-07, 08:12 PM | Gotta luv ya sum Sage.:D |
| Drath'ri02-27-07, 08:13 PM | Thank you SO much. |
| MerrikCale02-27-07, 08:44 PM | Gotta luv ya sum Sage.:D ok then |
| ZolDarklock02-27-07, 11:37 PM | considering that even Faerun the most mapped out continent has major areas still unexplored, any estimate given is flawed to say the least, and a census of the Toril itself of even a single specific race is impossible |
| Lord_Lucien_Karsus_Necron02-28-07, 12:30 AM | Why would any one need this knowledge? I mean really….. ? |
| MarkusTay6302-28-07, 03:21 AM | sixty-eight million and one, sixty-eight million and two, sixty-eight million and three... Oh damn, you made me lose count LLKN, now I gotta start all over... One.. two... thre.... :( |

I mean really….. ? Thank you guys, these were both helpful and on topic. Remind me to hire you for my next B-day party. |
| Karsus the Mad02-28-07, 11:10 AM | Why would any one need this knowledge? I mean really….. ? I've found it useful to know (or at least have an idea) on populations when attempting to gain a rough estimate on tax revenues for citystates, nations, etc. I like to know what kind of resources a specific lord or government could have access to, especially when running a campaign where the PC's themselves might attain noble titles and plots of land in which they can depend upon a steady income from the people they lord over. |
| Lord_Lucien_Karsus_Necron02-28-07, 04:09 PM | Most of the accessories provide city populations and resources. Why anyone would need the entire continents population is beyond me. Unless they are planning on conquering the whole continent!? Then good luck! Markus! 2… 5 ….45……7084…..39…….430,000……60000! Did I mess you up again!:dancin:  :ayyyy!: :bounce: |
| Old Sage02-28-07, 07:36 PM | Just because it is "beyond you"... does not necessarily mean that such information won't be useful to others for a particular reason in their own campaigns. |
| BrennonGoldeye02-28-07, 08:16 PM | One of my girls is convinced LLKN is in her science class... |
| MarkusTay6302-28-07, 11:41 PM | One of my girls is convinced LLKN is in her science class...As the 'project', correct? ;) Just because it is "beyond you"... That one made me laugh. |
| Lord_Lucien_Karsus_Necron03-01-07, 12:30 AM | Really whats the information for? I mean thats really silly. |

| Stigger03-01-07, 09:10 AM | Well, if census material were really useless, there wouldn't be that whole census thing in the US every ten years... besides, you can extrapolate a lot of information about a place with those sorts of figures. |
| ZolDarklock03-01-07, 11:40 PM | the fact is there is no reliable census you could use, so just make it up... |
| Lord_Lucien_Karsus_Necron03-02-07, 12:41 AM | Well, if census material were really useless, there wouldn't be that whole census thing in the US every ten years... besides, you can extrapolate a lot of information about a place with those sorts of figures. Yes but our government actually uses that to allocate resources and plan for the future. Or at least they are supposed to. No real application in game play. All you need to know it the populations of the various city states and even that information is occasionally used. But hey rock on I love useless trivia.;) |
| Stigger03-02-07, 04:27 AM | Never know... my point is that the data can be useful for figuring out certain events... say he's coming up with an idea that unleashes a cleric-resistent plague on the world and he needs a ballpark figure for how much X% of the population is going to be when he sets up the campaign and what the PC's know... there's just tons of reasons to want that sort of information. |
| Drath'ri03-02-07, 02:37 PM | Really whats the information for? I mean thats really silly. Actually what I'm using this information for had nothing to do with Faerun in particular, i just wanted to know the estimated population of ONE continent of Toril in order to create a campaign setting so i dont run into the problem of creating a continent and only having lets say, 4 million people living on it. So what i did was, estimated the land in faerun and divided it by the population or vice versa and came out with the population density which i plan on using for my own campaign. Thanks again everyone. |
| Lord_Lucien_Karsus_Necron03-02-07, 03:52 PM | Nothing wrong with 4 million. Just means humans are not the dominate force on the continent. Faerun is kinda crowded anyways. Maybe we need some bird flu to thin out the population! Imports from Kar-Tur should do it. :D :P |

| Old Sage03-02-07, 11:09 PM | Lucien, I have to ask... do you actually think about some of your comments before you post them? |
| ZolDarklock03-02-07, 11:25 PM | there is no census in the realms on a continet wide base, there is estimated city and possible nation populations, but that is it... if you are building a continent, dont worry about overall population, it doesn't matter one bit, just focus on the population your individual cities, towns, villages are whatever can support realistically given whatever natural resources are within there sphere of use |
| Agudo Archmage03-02-07, 11:31 PM | Karsus Necron Nothing wrong with 4 million. Just means humans are not the dominate force on the continent Old Sage Lucien, I have to ask... do you actually think about some of your comments before you post them? Ahh Sage… I was going to compliment him on agreeing with my idea, of having fewer humans in the FR books Of course I am bias Committee for more Gnomes/Dwarfs/Halflings/Elves in the world :pile: |
| Stigger03-03-07, 12:32 AM | staying out of this from now on... |
| Old Sage03-03-07, 12:39 AM | Ahh Sage… I was going to compliment him on agreeing with my idea, of having fewer humans in the FR booksI was referring to his "bird flu" comments. They're hardly necessary... |
| Lord_Lucien_Karsus_Necron03-03-07, 01:37 AM | :heehee too many humans! |
