| blckspdr04-04-07, 10:33 AM | Ok so here is a tricky question... I have been reading through RA Salvatore's Cleric Quintet and in the Third book an assassin shows up named Ghost... what in the world would this guys class be? Because that is awesome! |
| Old Sage04-04-07, 10:52 AM | I'm not too sure about a 3e conversion, though the 2e Villains' Lorebook lists Ghost as a 5th-level thief. |
| blckspdr04-04-07, 12:03 PM | a 5th level thief? for some reason im not buying it. I mean the dude can transfer peoples souls with other peoples bodies and he is only 5th level? that is one heck of a magical item for a 5th level character to have there. Im not saying that the book is wrong it just seems... out of place know what i mean? |
| Ramenth04-04-07, 12:16 PM | I have not read the book, but RA has said many times that he doesnt go by the game rules for many of his characters. /shrug |

The Ghearufu is a very potent artifact for a 5th level thief to have, but he completely depends on the Ghearufu in order to carry out his contracts. Otherwise, Ghost doesn't really strike me as a thief or assassin of extraordinary skill. He's fine statted out as he is. Hopefully we won't regress into the old, contrived practice of level stacking in order to reason something as arbitrary as why Ghost has such a powerful item in his possession. And yeah, Salvatore gave you the 2ed dwarven druid (not to mention the drow ranger) which obviously did not jive with the game mechanics of the time. Salvatore isn't exactly the guy that consulted the core books before writing a novel. Nor should he have, but I'm bordering on novel discussion and that is verbotten. |

I suggest you download a copy of the Villains' Lorebook (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/dnd/downloads) and take a look through Ghost's entry. |

I'd suggest you read his post again. ;) His issue isn't that Ghost's ability to possess people is extraordinary for a 5th level thief, it's that he finds it odd (mechanics wise) that a powerful item like the Ghearufu found its way into the hands of a 5th level thief. His question is whether or not Ghost should be level stacked to roughly concur to the level of a thief he thinks suitable enough to represent one who liberated the Ghearufu from a previous owner and now uses it for his own benefit. My reply was "it doesn't matter." Ghost is dependant on the Ghearufu as his tool to carry out his assassinations. The Ghearufu gives him his reputation as a feared assassin & not his own skill, so he's fine as a 5th level thief. |
| Old Sage04-05-07, 08:23 AM | And yet another example of why I should stay out of rules discussion threads. |
| The_King_in_Yellow04-05-07, 04:57 PM | No it doesn't matter if he is statted as a 5th level thief. However in the books Ghost read as a character with very low strength and constitution. In fact if I recall correctly the Ghost body was specifically picked for these traits and isn't the first body Ghost inhabited. I think 5th level Rogue is about right 3.5-wise because the entity doesn't need to focus on sneak attack ability, having a high dexterity etc, etc. More importantly those Rogue levels would represent and be concentrated on maxing out skills such as Bluff, Gather Information etc. |
