Howdy Folks,
I've got a small problem...I've got a player that wants to play a Goliath fighter in my upcoming game. Now I fully support his desire, but I've got a small problem with regional feats, see when I stage games in the Forgotten Realms, I always give a PC a free regional feat if they qualify for it. And now to my problem...

Goliath's aren't native to Faerun, and I'm looking to place a couple Clan's of Goliath's in the realms around the Cormyr area (I'll be running the group through Tearing of the Weave), probably in either the Stormhorns, the Desertmouth Mountains, Thunderpeaks or possibly even the Sunset Mountains.

Now I don't want to shaft the player that wants to play a Goliath, so can anyone suggestion Regional feats that might be appropriate?

Much appreciated.

Also,
Does the character need a feat to wield a medium sized Greatsword in one hand with a shield? I could understand it for a Large Sized Greatsword but I'm unsure with the medium sized one.
Thanks!

Is the character going to be a Barb? Depending upon how nice you are feeling you could give them the Tireless feat.

According to the RAW there is a difference between a medium greatsword and a large longsword, even though they do the same damage and have the same crit range. A large creature using a medium two handed sword as a one handed weapon takes a -4 penalty to hit for using it improperly, while they get no penalty for using a large longsword.

I think most people house rule this distinction away because it penalizes the Large PC by them only getting weapons properly sized by killing size large bad guys.

To some extent though I think it is fair when one starts thingking about this: i.e. a Goliath can start with a 22 strength, and deals out an average of 7 hps a hit with a large weapon. Thats a base average of 16hps a round. A human with 18 str and a medium weapon does around 10.5 hps a round base. So a goliath can churn out about 1.5 times as much damage in a round. That is alot more.

I would grant them a list either
1 - Typical to humans from the region they're in
2 - Same as the regions that grant Jotenbrud Regional Feat

I don't know if you're aware of it, but Champions of Valor (p. 17) suggests putting goliaths in the Azirrhat Mountains (nort of Anauroch, apparently), Chult, and in Spine of the World. It's a very brief entry listing a couple of suggestions, so if you don't have access to it, you don't really lose much.

As for the regional feats, a quick skim through PGtF gave Blooded, Dauntless, Fleet of Foot, Survivor, and Tireless. These seem, in my opionion, to go nicely along with what I read about on goliaths in RoS.

Regional equipment might include masterwork goliath greathammer. I can't think what other choice for equipment could be. Four potions of healing, pehaps? Masterwork longbow or mighty (up to +2) composite longbow?

I'd take the appropriate racial feats from Races of Stone.

I would suggest sure footed, but I don't have the goliath description handy to see if they already have something similar.

Goliaths are native to faerun. A tribe appears in a desert area in this realms novel: http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=products/frnovel/959727400 ;)

Indeed. In addition to the Champions of Valor reference, a goliath character plays a significant role in Erik's recent novel. I would equate the important of Goliaths to other extremely minor races in FR su. They exist and are known by knowledgeable people, but haven't impacted the world in a substantial way.

A question for those that have included -- or plan to include -- goliaths in their FR campaigns (and maybe it was even referred to in the novel mentioned): have you "imported" the goliath pantheon from RoS, or do you just use regular FR deities (presumably from the Faerūnian pantheon)?

Here's a more or less direct portfolio equivalency between RoS goliath pantheon and certain deities of the Faerūnian pantheon. It lists a FR deity followed by goliath power(s) and their porfolios that match the Faerūnian deity.

Lathander [Kavaki (competition), Naki-Uthai (climbing, bravery)]
Talos [Vanua (natural disasters)]
Beshaba [Vanua (misfortune)]
Chauntea [Theleya (fertility, growth)] Shiallia might be an even better choice, but her portfolio is pretty tied to the High Forest, Neverwinter wood, and forests in general
Gwaeron Windstrom [Manethak (hunting, lore)]
Jergal [Kuliak (the dead, exiles)] I suppose Kelemvor would work too, but Kuliak is only worshipped during burials, and Jergal, in my opinion, better plays the role of the "forgotten" deity. Besides, he has proper burial as part of his portfolio, so, while not an exact match, it serves the purpose.
Grumbar [Naki-Uthai (mountains)]

Other thematically fitting (IMO) deities might include Auril, Selūne, Shaundakul, Tymora, Silvanus, and Malar.

Of course, using FR deities leaves goliaths without a racial deity (that's part of the Kavaki Ram-Lord's portfolio). I suppose it could be Lathander, but other than the competition being a part of his portfolio, I don't really see much connection between him and goliaths. Then again, humans don't have a racial deity either, and they sem to be doing just fine.

Comments?

For those that are still interested,
I've plunked down a sizable population of Goliath's in the Desertmouth Mountains. They don't get out much and are primarily centered upon a fertile valley hidden deep within the mountains.

Now, I'm at work now, or I'd give you a list of regional feats for the Desertmouth Goliath's..more to come in a bit...

Indeed they do. Now the question is when do Raptorans make their FR debut?
