First I believe completely that a DM should "run" the game but our gm tends to take to the books to much in that if there is an issue in a book but another book coming up with more info he will not allow us to continue a course without alot of arguement until the next book comes out in 6 months. so it kinda leaves us hanging. For instance The shades who we were allowed to "chat " with from time to time trade in info and such, set us up to trap us in a prison world that shar had a hand in making long long ago and that there was no escape from. thru adventuring we find a possible way to get home. now the Shades saw us a a somewhat threat us being mostly elves and around the mid 20's in level so when we show up again they will be worried we will strike out at them but if we do then we might mess up something involving them in the new trilogy rpg books about Cormyr and such like we might kill a key shade or something. so while we might make it back we shouldn't act against them. Shouldn't he just let us do our thing and have the world act based off our actions instead of making us act off the worlds? unless of course he is trying to manuver us to a specific plot line I mean. Also our plot for revenge against the Shades is to take out the secong oldest son polymorph, mind Blank, then imprisonment or some such so he can't be rezzed and can't be found. then let them know we are back and responsible for it and that for every action they make against us we will act in kind. Shows Lord shadow we are not insignificant and shows the younger sons we are to be feared. with out showing we are affraid of them or vengeful beyond the one act. Sorry i know it's long and boring. but would like to know if there is a way to sway the DM to rely more on his mind than the books alone.

blehhck! Why bother. Get a new dm.

-You might be better served posting this at the "What's a Player To Do?" section.

-Anyway, the DM is, for all intents and purposes, omnipotent and omniscient. If he/she doesn't want you to do something, and finds realistic ways to prevent you from doing what you want in game, then he's not doing anything wrong, I don't think. Perhaps the DM intends to use these characters in the future. I know that in the game I am currently using, I had to figure out a way for some characters that the PCs wanted to bump off to survive, because I planned the next series of adventures with them in mind.

Exactly.

When detail trumps fun, then run.

when DMs suck, you're out of luck

Before your PC dies, you should fly

hey, this is fun
Lord Karsus

06-02-07, 11:51 PM
-'Dies' and 'Fly' don't exactly rhyme. Close enough, though.

In the dark as to what you must do?

Feeling the D.M just hasn't a clue?

Worry not and don't hide in your attic,

You must find a campaign setting where the timeline is static.

As a DM I'm opposed to forcing the players to do what I want them to do. I have several funny stories about preparing a game only to have the players take off in a totally different direction. That said, there's a much better way to deal with your problem then running off to another game.

Talk to the dm, explain your concerns and your problems. Talk to each other in a mature and responsible manner. Gaming is a cooperative thing, everyone (players and dm) has to work together or the whole thing falls apart.

Just my 2 krupplenicks on the subject, your mileage may of course vary.

as far as i'm concerned, and i've been running D&D since the early 80's on and off with rolemaster games for years in the middle. what goes on in my game trumps whats going to go on in a book.

plus if you guys kil the head shade big honcho then some thing interesting happens in a book, i would just fudge the time line so you guys could kill him one of his minions could bring him back, then he had the fun in the book and when it had finished big honcho mr baddy shade would come after you lot to get his revenge, if he thought it profitable, if not prepare yourself for a run in with a shed load of assassins all hired by him to get revenge.

#1, Do you *mostly* have fun with this GM? If you do then finding another may be harder than you think. Good GM's are actually not that common. Crappy GM's are terribly common.

#2, Of particular importance to me is that the story is about *the characters* and not the GM's plot. I dont know if your GM is in the group that have sounded off "Maybe the GM's plot requires you guys to do X".
If my plot requires X and the characters want to do Y, guess what? I re-tune my plot.

#3, Assuming #1 is true. This is one of those chances to practice RL diplomacy. Emphasize that you enjoy having this person as a GM and that, overall, they are good at it. Then say, "We wish you trusted your judgement as much as we do, instead of relying on splatbooks. Your adventures are the most fun when you are using your own ideas, combined with our initiative." I *wish* I had players with the volition to make plans like yours instead
of "what are we doing this week Brain?".

You know actually I can agree, you may not neccissarily have to flee.

We had a guy that joined our group, and when he started dming he had the "lead by the nose" method, and normally we would tell him that he needs more experience before we would allow him to dm our group. However, he was an excellent story teller, so over the course of the next two weeks we pointed out his flaws and what bothered us as players. He adjusted and now he is a damn good dm. Conclusion: You and your group are going to have to play it by ear. If you think he has potential then go with him, but tell him what you would like to see change. Unfortunately I don't see any other way to help you, because we aren't there to judge the situation.

-Giving advice in rhyme is fun. I can't believe it's something I've never done. From now on, I'm not going to be a bore- I'm going to do this more. We'll all do this, that's the plan. Karsus, Merrik, KiY, Soul, and maybe even Dan. Well, now I'll see if this is something I can continue. Hopefully, it isn't too hard to do.

I have one piece of advice for you my ill-stricken friend:

MUTINY!!!!!!:hoppingma
MerrikCale

06-03-07, 09:53 PM
I agree with Lord Karsus' plan. To rhyme is reason I can understand. So I here I go with my advice, stick this DM's head in a vice. Or perhaps call him names like loser or jerk, get him drunk and put him in a skirt. Throw him in bed with a muscle man's girl, then laugh so hard ya friggin' hurl

Devolution into absurdity... how odd...
Lord Karsus

06-05-07, 08:35 AM
-Stigger, that happens all the time. This is the first thread, however, devolving into rhyme. You should try it, it's kind of fun. The best part is that you'd be helping someone.
Stigger

06-05-07, 08:39 AM
Um... considering I often help it devolve into that absurdity, that should have been read with considerable irony. And I don't rhyme... well, not in years anyway. Too much of a pain to write in iambic anyway.
Lord Karsus

06-05-07, 08:42 AM
-I know, but I didn't want to be lame. I needed two words that sound the same.
MerrikCale

06-05-07, 10:47 AM
Hey, now Stigger is joining the fun, maybe more will follow his bum
Leukrythus

06-05-07, 11:48 AM
This is not what I sought, what hath I wrought.

I merely gave some advice, and the rhyme gave it spice.

But now that it has spread, reading here I do dread.

I wish not to edit my post, that is up to Wizards of the Coast.

So judge me not, why I wrote this I forgot.

06-05-07, 01:47 PM
Good advice all.... I will take to the Dm.. it's his game but our ball...
Lord Karsus

06-05-07, 02:14 PM
-It's your ball, you have the power. Make that DM shiver and cower. Here's an idea- don't demand. Instead, try to make the DM understand. D&D is a game for all to enjoy. That includes every little girl and boy. Your campaign doesn't fully conform to canon...So? As long as it doesn't directly impact your future plans, let it go.
MerrikCale

06-05-07, 09:35 PM
Oh dear God look upon this with dread? A monster have I created in this thread.
souldnce9

06-06-07, 02:00 AM
Well it is fine as long as it doesn't spread! All over every Thread, like butter onto bread. My friend Fred, once said, while lying in bed, that he read, a thread, where everyone fled, due to the thread, that spread, with ryming dread.
Now that thats been said, and my cats have been fed. I'm going to bed, to rest my head, it is heavy as lead. :D :looloo:

Speaking of the great Stigger's bum, has anyone seen my good friend Tum?

Wow, this is fun. Reminds me of the Alter of the Lupine Lords. :D

Anyway, my DM in highschool had this annoying habit of listing off the treasure we had found at the end of a grand battle, then he would stop, write something on his NPC's sheet and say "Wait, you didn't find that."
MerrikCale

06-06-07, 10:09 PM
Ah yes, Mr. Goldeneye, that is an annoying habit, I fear your old DM was full of horse.....

06-06-07, 10:21 PM
I once had an annoying dm,
who would stop doing his job,
When the clock hit pm,
and start doing things like a slob.

not that it matters but his name was not bob. :D

I figure no such thing. I shall remain contrary.

06-07-07, 06:17 PM

you need to grow-up,
all of this rhyming
makes me want to throw-up!
souldnce9

06-07-07, 07:08 PM
Why MarkusTay63! That's no way to be!
For goodness sake we're playing a game!
No reason to get cranky and lame!
:P :D

One thing Stigger... did not figure... the reality which... I am a Lich...
MerrikCale

06-07-07, 07:58 PM
Being a lich is no big deal, when you have the power Lord Karsus' wields.
Lord Karsus

06-07-07, 11:14 PM
-Indeed, Merrik is right. A Lich causes me no fright.
MerrikCale

06-07-07, 11:27 PM
-Indeed, Merrik is right. A Lich causes me no fright.

I am jealous as you are one powerful dude, and I am a mere rogue and a poor one to boot.
Lord Karsus

06-07-07, 11:37 PM
-Fear not, young Merrik, train hard day and night. One day, you will develop amazing might. Then those other rogues won't laugh and tease. You'll be able to tear through them all in a breeze. But, until then, train hard and win all of your bouts. Oh, and make sure to eat lots of Brussel Sprouts.

-By the way, everyone, don't develop any dread. I've cast powerful wards to contain all the rhyming to just this thread.

That makes me really sad
So come on everyone

Hey MerrikCale!
If you work for me
Soon you will see
That you'll no longer be poor.
Go ahead! I'll open my door.
