| Zacharia03-17-07, 07:32 AM | I was wondering; when some dwarves leave the confines of their original clan homes how do they gain a new name for their own clan they broke off to create? Lets say some gold dwarves leave to I don't know, Cormyr? how would they gain their own clan name? |
| theartistformerlyknownas03-17-07, 02:25 PM | I imagine that with a group consensus, it all comes down to popular vote. It's like naming a rock band. Like the "Bouldershoulders," for example... |
| BadCatMan03-17-07, 08:50 PM | I imagine that the new name could come from anywhere of their choosing: a mark of their location, an event that surrounded their leaving or their founding, a nick-name for the founder. For example, in my game, Valmar of the Iron Eyes (ancestor of a PC) founded a new clan, the Ironeyes. |

| Mpinkard03-19-07, 12:27 PM | That makes more sence :) or even using the last name of thier leader? I was about to mention the same thing, in a game I am playing in we havea group of dungeon delving Gold Dwarves from Ironfang Deep in Turmish. All of the dwarves that joined the party took the same clan name as the "party leader", even the little "halfling burgler". I felt bad for the late commer Moon Elf Rogue, least until the grey renderer used him to bash at cousin Wulgar and Thurgar. Back to the topic, we have been considering for three sessions now, for all of us dwarves to add "gar" to the end of our names. |
| Lord Karsus03-19-07, 05:07 PM | -They might aquire new clan names according to their exploits. A Dwarven warrior who is known for cleaving the skulls of Orcs might go on to start his/her own clan and be known as "X Skullcleaver". A Dwarven cleric who is constantly drunk might go on to start his/her own clan and be known as "X Meadeswiller", and so on. |
| Old Sage03-19-07, 07:53 PM | BCM and LK are largely correct. Most clan names, as well as some names for their underground domains, often resemble dwarven names or nicknames, with many likely originating as the name or nickname of a famous dwarf who founded the clan. Future dwarven clans often name both their clan and their underground domains in a manner that pays tribute to the honour and strength of a particular dwarven leader or member of the future clan (see Dwarves Deep). The Melairkyn immediately spring to mind. They were named after King Melair I, who discovered the precious metal mithral under the future Mount Waterdeep in -1288 DR. Their underground dwellings came to be known as Melairbode. |
| Delzounblood03-22-07, 11:31 AM | I miself ave taken Delzoun's name as mi own.... I be Delzounblood of Clan Delzoun As in Blood of Delzoun, now mi wife be a Delzounblood and so be the youngling we is raising! his name is Delzoun Delzounblood. Mi fathers, fathers, fathers, fathers Grand Father was Delzoun himself. I have running in mi veins the Royal Mythril Blood of Delzoun. mi fathers (etc:) name shall live on forever in mi sons, sons, sons. History, Tradition, Family & Blood are what maketh the Dwarf. We come from under the mountains, and are made of the same. so in answer of the question as sage and others put... Clan names mean something to those who create them, be it a feat of strenght or fortitude, a place, blood or a quest or even a nickname of your leader, so whatever you choose choose well, it'll be around for generations. If there's a high level cleric of Moradin available in the group of petitioners, he decides. If there are multiple choices "Wrathaxe, Hammerstorm, Plateforger," then all plaints within the clan are heard, and the priest decides. If the priest says no new clan, then the answer's no. |
