How Novels are portrayed according to stats [Archive] - Wizards Community

this is just an idea I thought of...
So here's my idea to get a better picture at novels so that many won't complain about the stats.
In a novel, there is no such thing as an NPC. In other words, all the units you encounter are characters. In an army, where you might the soldiers are NPC's and have no brains...For example...All orcs in game stats have Hp of 5. But if you actually make orc characters, if you roll a big roll in CON then the Hp will go to at least 15+, and that's just for lvl 1/2 I think.
So in an army a soldier is a...
Recruit = Level 3 Fighter
Regular = Level 5/6 Fighter
Veteran = Level 9/10 Fighter
Elite = Level 13/14 Fighter

Basically you'll see that this is the main reason why a level 20 wizard cannot defeat an army composed of 100 soldiers.

Just... no. First off they'll be warriors for the most part, class wise... and I'm not even going to go into just how wrong those level figures you have there are...

Why? All soldiers are fighters....Warriors is also okay....SO is barbarian. for an orc hoard just change all those stats I placed on the first post to barbarian classes then you have it.

Comeon man! This is the best solution for all those conceptions about novels and stats, you need this idea to soothen up yourt thoughts!

Okay, so there are NPC's. But when it comes to fights, you've gotta agree about the character issue.

Nope, ruleswise, they'd start at 1st level, and the elites would be 5th or 6th level in all likelihood. Take a look at the Leadership feat in the DMG, it should give you a much more likely scenario.

By your numbers, half a dozen veteran armsmen are a match for the Knights of Myth Drannor!

And besides...is this really something a lot of people think about when they read novels? Nitty-gritty statistics?

Well yes. For starters, the guys in this forum thinks about those things.

Faraer: So the Knights of Myth Drannor are all level 15's or 16's maybe?

Well, not me, and I have a feeling I'm not the only one.

I know its the last thing on my mind when reading one of my occassional Realms books, and so I'd think that Rinonalyrna has the right of it.

i know stats never once have entered my mind while reading a novel.... i might try to emulate what the person did in a later game... but the guys are hero's they are supposed to do amazing things and have amazing magical items.... who cares if they are in a sourcebook or not

Or commoners even, given that the vast majority of armies are formed from conscripts or people who otherwise aren't professional soldiers. I think the DMG says something along those lines anyway.

True, could be commoners as well, or even experts in some cases. Epic Level Handbook even mentions some adjustments for 'purchasing' Aristocrat/Adept followers, PC classed followers, or even Prestige classed followers, although the wording was a little unclear for the exact LA I thought, and didn't quite mesh with the examples, at least I didn't think they did.

Most novels with spellcasters are easier to convert as spell are a nice benchmark for power levels of mages. Martial characters are a bit more difficult to interpretate ruleswise. Would a WotC-staffer go about doing level checks against novel charcters who slay balors left and right by the CR's the characters defeated?
