Well met,

I'm new to the forums, and this is my first post, so please, let me know if I'm doing anything wrong.

Anyway, my real reason for posting is the following question:

How old are Mirt, Durnan, Kelben, and any other Crazed Venturers? (That is the COmpany of Crazd venturers that included Mirt and Durnan, right?)

Assuming the current campaign year is 1373, the timeline in City of Splendors states that In [1302] ..., Durnan and Mirt the Merciless, emerged from Undermountain bearing great wealth" (CS:WD pg 11)

Realms years are fairly close to our calendar years, are they not? If so, I have trouble seeing Durnan as "a gruff, burly russet haired man" (CS:WD pg 54) if he's 91 years old (starting age 20 + 71 years)!

Can anybody help me out?

Thank you.

Welcome. The Company of Crazed Venturers, Ed Greenwood's first PC group, are Dumal Erard, Loene, Malchor Harpell, Nain Keenwhistler, Savengriff, Tolgar Anuvien, Trunnian Regallis, and Tzarrakyn. They seem to have been active in the 1340s and 50s DR, so I'd guess most were born circa 1320.

Mirt, Durnan and Khelben aren't members of the Crazed Venturers. Like many, perhaps most, rich and powerful folk of Faerūn, Mirt and Durnan use potions of longevity and similar life-prolonging magics; see also the first section of Silverfall concerning Mirt. Khelben was born 414 DR, and lived long through Mystra's grace.

Thank you. As I wrote that, i wasn't sure about the COmpany of Crazed Venturers, but for some reason it was stuck in my head that Durnan and Mirt were asscociated with it.

And shame on me for forgetting about potions of longevity!

The full history of the CoCV (Company of Crazed Venturers) has never been revealed, and like all of Ed's gaming groups, had both PC and NPC members. Some of the THO's musings in Ed's scroll at Candlekeep have shed some more light on members but this group remains relatively undetailed. Roster as known to date is (and I've likely missed some as I'm away from my sources):-

Tolgar Anuvien (of Goldenfields)
Malchor Harpell
Nain Keenwhistler
Savengriff
Tzarrakyn the Elder
Loene
Moriath
Bralagar Winterhand
Trunnian Regallis
Dumal Erard

Re: Mirt's and Durnan's use of potions of longevity, this is from Ed in March '04 --

"...I think Mirt and Durnan are both a trifle OLDER than 120. Still unpublished is the “essential Realmslore” short story in which they acquired as treasure certain drinkables that might be expressed in AD&D terms (the D&D game came along after I wrote the story) as slightly-variant Potions of Longevity. So, yes, they appear to be rather leathery/fat/worn-but-vigorous 50-ish males. The way the published Realms has turned out, the careers of Mirt and Durnan have been sadly neglected, but you will see their present-day selves adventuring together in my tale in the forthcoming Realms of Dragons anthology (end of 2004, I believe)."
