| StarFyre03-05-07, 08:29 AM | Has Evermeet sent a bunch of elves and good dragons to reclaim and rebuild it? Has the high magic been reset around the city, etc and all the devils, orcs, etc purged? Due to time, I'm probably not gonna read any novels for a while, so figured might as well find out some info... I was hoping to maybe do an adventure in myth drannor, but no full maps of the place exist :( Sanjay |
| Lord Karsus03-05-07, 03:45 PM | Has Evermeet sent a bunch of elves and good dragons to reclaim and rebuild it? -Elves yes, Dragons, no. An entire army of Elves, actually. Has the high magic been reset around the city, etc and all the devils, orcs, etc purged? -It depends on where you are in the timeline. By DR 1380, the city is purged enough to have a (seemingly) stable and effective government. I was hoping to maybe do an adventure in myth drannor, but no full maps of the place exist :( -See The Ruins of Myth Drannor, The Fall of Myth Drannor and Cormanthyr: Empire of the Elves, of which the latter two can be downloaded for free. |
| Zardnaar03-05-07, 06:11 PM | In what book has Myth Drannor been reclaimed by 1380 DR? |
| Galad03-05-07, 06:23 PM | In what book has Myth Drannor been reclaimed by 1380 DR? The Last Mythal Trilogy by Richard Baker. |
| Lord Karsus03-05-07, 08:40 PM | In what book has Myth Drannor been reclaimed by 1380 DR? -The last couple of pages in Final Gate, the third book, more specifically. |
| Renvale99903-06-07, 03:04 PM | That really stinks, atleast I think, in canon they've taken away one of the most famous dungeons in all of Faerun. Bah, what's next? Undermountain purged by two squirrels and a fighter... I hate when they do stuff like that...Myth Drannor was fine without any pointy earred munchkins running around it. :headexplo |

Undermountain purged by two squirrels and a fighter... -Well, it is reclaimed in DR 1374, and the government of Coronal Ilsevele is first installed in DR 1380. So, there still are six more years of adventuring, though it is likely that you'll need permission from the Elves now. I hate when they do stuff like that...Myth Drannor was fine without any pointy earred munchkins running around it. :headexplo -IN the Realms, Elves are roughly the same heights as Humans. Albeit, a little shorter (on average), but they're all Medium sized. |

I'm just being silly, I just liked Myth Drannor the way it was. |
| Nocci03-07-07, 03:49 AM | I was hoping to maybe do an adventure in myth drannor, but no full maps of the place exist :( I have a full map I pasted together from SOMEWHERE (not the boxed set). If you are in need of one digitally, send me a PM. I also have an openoffice spreadsheet I made of all the streets and walkways for each ward, as well as which house/home/shop/building/inn/festhall/guildhall/school/etc/etc is in what ward and on what street, etc. *nerds all over the place* :D |
| Green Elven Vampire03-07-07, 04:48 AM | I think it's great that the elves reclaimed Myth Drannor. It was getting very played and lame as a place for dangerous adventure year after year after year. After all, there are much more dangerous dungeons and forests and ruins across Faerun left by the elves in ancient times that can now be a focus of high adventure. And they didn't just reclaim Myth Drannor, but they planted a sapling of the Tree of Souls in the new realm as well, which allows free use of elven high magic for all high mages within it's miles of radius. And that radius will continue to grow outwards as the tree gets older, spreading the free use of high magic among all elven high mages within the borders of this new realm. |
| Tarus03-07-07, 10:22 AM | And they didn't just reclaim Myth Drannor, but they planted a sapling of the Tree of Souls in the new realm as well, which allows free use of elven high magic for all high mages within it's miles of radius. And that radius will continue to grow outwards as the tree gets older, spreading the free use of high magic among all elven high mages within the borders of this new realm. Which means what exactly? Ive never really read up on any detailed elven high magic. Does 'free use' mean elven high mages do not need to memorize spells? |
| Renvale99903-07-07, 01:38 PM | I believe it means they can cast epic spells without losing XP or backlash damage, but don't quote me on that. I imagine one of the Karsus's or Merrikcale can clarify, hopefully they stop by here. |
| Isildrae Kyuss03-08-07, 08:05 AM | I'm pretty sure, but again I'm sure I may well get corrected, that High Magic cannot be cast upon mainland Faerun, but it is possible within the sphere of influence of the Tree of Souls. The sapling is something I was going to inquire about...last I had heard is that Lamruil had taken the Tree of Souls of up north to a wsteland to carve out his new realm...the fact that saplings were around was a little surprise to me. |
| Lord Karsus03-08-07, 09:19 AM | -All of that information about Elven High Magic not being able to be cast in Faerūn has been rendered somewhat "invalid" since Epic Magic came into being, since Elven High Magic is Epic Magic. I chalk this inconsistency up to tradition, where the Elves actually do have the ability to utilize High Magic (look at Araevin) on mainland Faerūn, but did not believe that they could. Thus, it reconsiles both 2e and 3e lore, mostly. |
| Lord Karsus03-08-07, 09:21 AM | The sapling is something I was going to inquire about...last I had heard is that Lamruil had taken the Tree of Souls of up north to a wsteland to carve out his new realm...the fact that saplings were around was a little surprise to me. -As I mentioned in another thread, Baker didn't do his research, and forgot that Lamruil had the tree. He thought it was planted in Evermeet. There are a few possible explanations at this point: A) Prince Lamruil perished, and the tree was recovered, and brought back to Evermeet. I personally don't think this theory makes too much sense, but it is only a theory. B) The Tree in Evermeet is not the Tree of Souls, but is something different. |
| Isildrae Kyuss03-08-07, 10:20 AM | another possible theory? Lamruil planted the tree back in early 1370 and by 1380 it had sprouted a sapling which he sent back to his dharling mother dearest. Couldn't Araevin only cast the high magic because of his experiance with the celestial and he wasn't completely elven anymore? Although you've already cleared up another point I was wondering about...is elven high magic the same as epic spells... I suppose for the time being 'speculation house rules' |
| HVulpes03-08-07, 10:58 AM | Here's Stephen Schend's Answer from Candlekeep: On June 24, 2006 Try this on for size, then, as a way to have one's cake and eat it too. The Tree of Life was planted somewheres by Lamruil. It did its job and established a powerful mythal and magic-enhanced place just for elves. After its initial rush of power and use as an artifact, the Tree of Souls acts (for the most part) as the heart of that realm but also like a normal tree. Saplings could potentially be taken from that central tree (now a living thing and less an artifact after its initial use of power) with far lesser effects. I suggest keeping it limited to perhaps one sapling per 50 years or 100 years, and all the sapling can do is help repair an aging or corrupted mythal, rather than establish one itself. How does that work as a potential way to not undermine the specialness of the Tree of Souls while allowing for what later writers have done? Steven who's done this sort of thing before to make everything work well together And this is Richard Baker's message from candlekeep: On June 30, 2006 Well, I'll own up to a modest goof: I sure thought that the Tree was planted in Evermeet and that Lamruil had taken a sapling off to his new hidden realm. However, I don't think this really messes up my story or continuity all that badly. The important thing in Last Mythal is that Seiveril is given a sapling; the question of where the parent tree is located and how many other saplings it has produced is secondary to the story. A minor "patch" to one line of dialogue in Final Gate would fix things up nicely. |
| Isildrae Kyuss03-08-07, 11:05 AM | Thank you very much - that sure as hell is as good an answer I will get for a while...straight from the horses mouth as it were. |
| Green Elven Vampire03-09-07, 01:27 AM | Elven high magic CAN be cast on mainland Faerun as is done in several novels including RoTa and The last mythal books. And yes, the tree lets elven high mages cast high magic at no XP cost and no backlash effects in hundreds of miles surrounding the tree. So the elves are very, very powerful now indeed within their realm. |
| Derren S.03-09-07, 04:52 AM | I think you overestimate the power of elven high mages. Sure they can cast some powerfull spells around their domain, but only 1-2 times a day. There are not many high mages left and as most high magic spells are rituals where the high mages have to donate (epic) spell slots the number of spells they can cast per day is very limited. Compared to Evermeet, Myth Drannor is vulnerable. Back to Myth Drannor. In what state is the city now? Is it a ruin which still gets rebuild with 3 guys on a desk in a less destroyed building who act as government or is it a fully repaired and fortified city? |

Is it a ruin which still gets rebuild with 3 guys on a desk in a less destroyed building who act as government or is it a fully repaired and fortified city? -Like I mentioned, in DR 1380, a coronal is installed in the city. There wouldn't be this sembalance of a working government unless the city was fairly stable, and things had the potential to start moving smoothly. Since the coronal is just installed in DR 1380, I think it is safe to assume that the years 1374-1379 are mostly about routing the monsters who inhabit the city. Perhaps late in DR 1379, an actual government is beginning to form. But, there is no evidence as to "how cleaned up" the place is in DR 1380. It could be barely cleaned up, but just enough to have a semi-perminent settlement of Elves and a government, or it could theoretically be 100% cleaned up. I wager it's somewhere between those two extremes. |
| Alediran03-09-07, 01:56 PM | Myth Drannor (the city) by 1380 with the help from the Mythal I imagine it's free of evil creatures, the forest of Cormanthor is another thing. |
| GothicDan03-09-07, 02:03 PM | The Mythal was cast by a fairly low level Epic caster; I think some of its more powerful denizens could still get through. And with 30th-40th level Phaerimm running around, I do NOT buy the idea that the Shadovar killed them all, so let's throw that right out the window. ;) |
| Lord Karsus03-09-07, 02:05 PM | And with 30th-40th level Phaerimm running around, I do NOT buy the idea that the Shadovar killed them all, so let's throw that right out the window. ;) -I don't either. But, you know how they these days feel about the Shadovar. Lets see...How might you put it? The Shadovar are: "t3h uberness!11!" That close? :) |
| GothicDan03-09-07, 02:15 PM | Oh, yeah. I forgot about their uber l33t haxx04 pow34z! |
| Lord Karsus03-09-07, 02:20 PM | -Exactly. |
| BrianCritchley03-09-07, 03:48 PM | *grabs Telemont and tosses him in a tanning bed* NOT MANY SHADOWS THERE ARE THERE! :) |
