Now we all know that Karsus was responsible for the fall of Netherial and the recently discovered sundering of the weave. However, baring any Clones running around is the Archwizard also known as the Momentary God irredeemably dead? Has the tripartite spirit at Karse been forever destroyed by the actions of Shades emissaries or the Green regent story line? Let’s hear what everyone thinks! I know there are a lot of Karsus 'fans' out there that want to talk about this. Go for it!:D

Let's see... I'll forward the idea that he moved to a different crystal sphere after faking his own demise with a epic illusion spell, founded his own religion that demonized magic and the supernatural in favor of some intangible redemption and no actual priests and is currently sitting on a beach someplace warm with sea and sand drinking fruity drinks with umbrellas in them, and that what was actually used was a full-sized giant space hampster that had been petrified, who obviously have enough power within them to simulate actually being a piece of a former god, so we should all bow down and worship the hampsters...

You think this Hamster might have some sort of alliance with the Mice from The Hitchhikers guide?:PMore then likely. I like this Space Hamster theory, it would explain much. Suppose a ship full of them landed in ancient Netheril, ACTUALLY BRINGING the Nether scrolls with them from a distant galaxy? Their own powerful magics then polymorphed them into forms that would be pleasing to the local inhabitants. There were 69 Hamsters originally aboard the U.S.S. Habitrail, of which 58 of them were known to have created enclaves. Perhaps some of them avoided the destruction of the phoney 'human' kingdom and their decendents even now burrow beneath our feet in the deep Underdark!

"Karsus isn't dead son, he just went home" - a slightly altered quote from MIB ;)

P.S. Never liked Rashemi very much. Maybe a nice plague or a an Orc horde with directions could take out that pesky country!:DWow, you and Red Wizard should get together. :P

As far as a horde taking them out, its been tried and failed, and I think their particular brand of 'natural' magic would serve them well in a plague situation.

With 1/3 of his soul trapped in the red butte of his body in the dire woods, 1/3 of his soul trapped in a stone golem of his likeness in a temple on top of the red butte, and 1/3 of his soul trapped in his heart the Karsestone, which is in the hands of Shar, and his divine essence floating in the astral, I'd say it's as close to irredeemable as it can get. However, the green regent story didn't have his soul destroyed, merely united so he could pass on. If that's the real deal, all they did was make it easier to bring the bugger back.
But for me, I like to think he's dead, dead, dead. I think he's far more interesting and useful as a symbolic reminder of what happens when even the most powerful of mortals stick their noses into things they shouldn't. Tho' in a game, it might be fun to have him return in some manner (like Voldemort), only to be slapped back into the imprisonment of a limbo existence compounding his errors.

Still have NO idea where the green Regent story line comes from.

-Oddly enough, I disagree with my mad counterpart. I like to think that Karsus is not dead. He cannot be revived though, don't get me wrong. He's in a libo-like state, where he isn't truly alive, but yet, he isn't truly dead.

-Well, it wasn't that easy. Took years and years of preparation, gathering my/our components, and writing the thing. Plus, most mortals simply aren't strong enough to handle casting the spell. I/We was/were, though.

-Anyway, the Realms are a polythesitic world. In all polythestic cultures, divine powers are not fully omniscient and omnipotent. Western society is based on Judeo-Christian philosophy and religion. We see G-d as a fully omnipotent and fully omniscient being. In polytheistic cultures, this is not the case. Look at the Greek, Roman and Vedic pantheons. Said deities are certainly not all-powerful and all-knowing. The nature of a multi-deific pantheons is such that the deities cannot be omniscient and omnipotent.

I never said that now did I? Given that it failed stupendously (most likely a result of choosing the wrong deity) shows that we didn't fully understand all the possible outcomes. In retrospect, spending only 10 years on the spell seems to have been the major mistake:P

10 years on divinity theft? How long would it have taken your focused effort to find alternate methods of handling the phaerimm?

That being my normal great grudge against this little Karsus as martyr scheme. If he can steal power from a Greater Goddess for six hours then why couldn't he have found far less drastic methods to oppose the phaerimm in less time than it took to create the Avatar spell? The only half benevolent explanation I can think of is some very peculiar blind spots in his understanding.

-Indeed. There was this one time we invited him, Azuth and Savras over for dinner. Mystra still wasn't talking to us. Anyway, KtM slaved away for hours in the kitchen, cooking up a nice, big italian dinner. Velsharoon never bothered to tell us that, being a Lich, he didn't eat. But, he wanted to be "polite", so he ate the meatballs, anyway. Of course, having no internal organs, the meatballs simply fell from his neck, through his ribcage, on onto the white carpet. That stain didn't come out for days...

Mystra was in a snit at the time. I had told that if she was going save that twit from Talos then it needed to be housebroken and have basic transmutation shoved down its throat. The twit got uppity when Azuth informed it of the same and ruined the weather in Dweomerheart for a few seconds. Mystra got irate and pretty much everyone left. Well after Azuth blocked my way out so I'd be stuck trying to talk her down. Something about being less likely to assault fragile mortals, ignoring that I've beaten Velsh over the head with a mountain and Mystra knows it.

Ummm. . . that's the point. He needed to beat them and to reverse the effects of their magic. Not one or the other, both, thus he needed quite a bit of oomph.

The problems with the nation of Nethril were many, you needed multiple solutions, or one REALLY BIG solution. Karsus, being who he was, chose the latter. :)

Since I'm unaware of that story I can't really comment but I'd have to ask;
Did Karsus know she found a solution? If not then it wouldn't really effect what Karsus was up to anyhow. Further, I'm not sure that Karsus would believe that someone else could come up with a solution better than his solution.

Karsus wasn't really slow in the way I think of someone being slow, I think of him in a sorta "Texan" way (no offense to you Texans out there *g*), ie. everything has to be BIG. He's not going to go to a party, he's going to bring a better party to the party. He's not going to kill Phaerimm one at a time, he's going to end the life of the species in one go! He sure would use a Flying Enclave to swat a fly, and that fly would be DEAD!

I imagine he was horribly abnoxious (I'm glad he's/they've mellowed out in his/thier old age *g*) but I also imagine that NO ONE told him that :)

Further, I'm pretty sure he's the only mortal to beat a god (note: the ToT defeats don't count, first off, in . . . I think all the cases there was devine power in the attacks, ie. Godslayer was Mask, Midnight has Mystra's backing. . . I might be wrong because it's been a dogs age since I've thought about those events but the second reason it doesn't count is the gods were in mortal form. Next, the "dark three" don't count either, they didn't beat Jergal, he gave up. There may be cases that I'm unaware of though.) and he beat a god straight out. Wupped the Goddess of Magic with magic. There was a reason for Karsus' arrogance and that's because he's probably the best, most powerful, mage to grace the face of FR (again, to my knowledge, but he beat out a god at the god's own game and I can't really see a reason for the Goddess of Magic to let him do that, which means to me that he forced the issue)

Phew, I believe I'm gonna shut up now ;D
GothicDan

02-22-07, 10:44 AM
The fact that Mystra was able to sacrifice herself and destroy the Weave (affect it, despite Karsus's spell) proved that the spell really didn't work COMPLETELY. If you truly control someone's mind, for instance, they shouldn't be able to commit suicide.

So I do not think that he whooped her with magic. He merely made things difficult.

Yes Karsus was kind of slow when it came to problem solving. The kind of guy that would use a Flying Enclave to swat a fly!
Well...yeah know, if you got it, might as well use it.

Did Karsus know she found a solution? If not then it wouldn't really effect what Karsus was up to anyhow. Further, I'm not sure that Karsus would believe that someone else could come up with a solution better than his solution.
Noone knew as far I'm aware of.

I imagine he was horribly abnoxious (I'm glad he's/they've mellowed out in his/thier old age *g*) but I also imagine that NO ONE told him that
His personality can be gleamed from his writeup in Netheril, and he was beyond abnoxious. Ed also gave an insight into his mind in Temptations of Elminster
The Image of Karsus recorded for his clone (from The Temptation of Elminster):

The image wore robes of rich crimson trimmed with black, and golden rings gleamed on its fingers...their hue matched by the blazing gold of the man's eyes. He had tousled brown hair and the untidy beginnings of a beard, and his voice fairly leaped with eager confidence.
"I am Karsus, as you are Karsus. If you behold this, disaster has befallen me, the first Karsus...and you, the second, must carry on to glory."

"I know not what you recall of my... our...life, some say my mind is less than clear, these days. Know that many mages of our people have achieved great power, mightiest of these, the archwizards of Netheril, rule their own domains. Mine, like many, is a floating city, I named it for us. I am the most powerful of all the archwizards, the Arcanist Supreme. They call me Karsus the Great."

"Of course, given your awakening, none of that may mean anything. I may not have been slain by a rival or suffered a purely personal doom...Karsus the city and the glory of Netheril itself may have fallen in a great war or cataclysm, we have made many foes, the greatest of them ourselves. We war among ourselves, we Netherese, and some of us war within ourselves. My wits are not always wholly my own. You may well share this affliction, watch for it, and guard against it."

The image of Karsus smiled, arching a sardonic eyebrow.
"Perhaps you'll have no need of these recording spells of mine, but I've prepared one for each speculum you see on the floor in this place, a series of spellcasting lessons, lest you face the perils of this world lacking certain enchantments I've found crucial. Our work must continue, only through power absolute can I...we...find perfection... and Karsus exists, has always existed, to achieve perfection and transform all Toril."
And of course noone told him that to his face:) You don't go telling the chap with a nuke between his thighs (and who is crazy enough to use it) that he's an idiot moron self centered egomaniac.

I always did find that odd. He used magic to overcome the deity of magic. There's a hint as to how it may have been possible in Mystryl's deity writeup. It states she could not have been affected by any but the most powerful of magics, which did not draw on the weave, but instead bypassed it to dip directly into her divine essence.

The fact that Mystra was able to sacrifice herself and destroy the Weave (affect it, despite Karsus's spell) proved that the spell really didn't work COMPLETELY. If you truly control someone's mind, for instance, they shouldn't be able to commit suicide.
Since the spell had nothing to do with controlling the mind of a deity, and that Mystryl couldn't stop the effect of the spell, shows rather clearly she did not have any type of control whatsoever over magic, or any of her portfolio. Killing herself was the only thing she could do to severe Karsus's link to her. And without any contingency plans or backups, or even any foresight, it was a rash thing to do, despite being needed. It was a lose/lose situation. She chose the least worse option.
So I do not think that he whooped her with magic. He merely made things difficult.
Hard choices often have two possibilities. Succeed, or fail and make things worse. Hard and stupid choices usually make things worse several times over.

Then again, everything happened the way it did, and Karsus is the way he was for a reason. Speculating on alternatives, and speculating on deeper meaning into his mind (or Mystryl's), while occassionally fun, is ultimately fruitless.

And I'm of the opinion that any mortal making a god commit suicide in order to stop that mortal from accomplishing their goal has "whooped" that god. :)

Especially when they are using a tool that the god has so much control over.

ie. I look at it a lot like mini-me taking a linebacker's hand and slapping them in the face with it, just so happens this linebacker could blow up their house ;)
(probably a bad analogy, but I like it *g*)

I think Ioulaum has them both beat. What did Karsus ever do for Netheril? Ioulaum defeated Orc hoards and created magic that benefited all the people. Ioulaum was not only a better mage he was a better person. I would argue that Ioulaum could smack the taste out of Lorlocks mouth in a one on one fight. Of course if he brings his hoard of lich buddies then Ioulaum is screwed.

I could see Karsus being afflicted with several psychological disorders. I mean he collected special friends. That’s sounds like something a mentally disabled person would do if they had the power. Having an empire's fall tied to someones name isn't a measure of weakness (or of greatness) nor is he the only one. It's a consequence of stupidity by those who have the power to cause such. He is noted however, in any source that bothers to specify something as trivial as how 'powerful' something is, as being the most powerful mortal to have ever existed. And I agree with it. Not because my username is Karsus the Mad, or because he was ultra powerful. I agree with it because that's his purpose in Lore. He was meant to be the most powerful mage to ever exist. He was meant to push the boundaries of magic beyond anyone's understanding. He was meant to make the biggest mistake of all. He was meant to be a lesson to arrogant and foolhardy mages that no matter how powerful you are, there are consequences. But most of all, he's a story character used to explain in-game why FR uses the current rule set governing magic. He's not even originally FR either.

Don't get me wrong. Karsus is a great example. I take the identification of Karsus as the most powerful, known mage. Now this takes it out of canon, so it may be moot in your eyes now. But to say that no other being existed on Toril of greater power, ever, would be naive.

Karsus' infamy is a great example of what should happen to PC's should they get too froggy, and thus the citing.

Shrug,

An archmage willing to go toe to toe with a power even one such as Karsus is well served by having a path to divinity. It'd take a day or three and the side effects are not fun but as far as I know the portfolio of abjuration is open and with a little effort can be aquired. Of course anyone can create a more powerful mage than Karsus, of course Nethril may have had dozens of mages of greater power that we don't know about, of course the elves may have all been better magic wielders than Karsus and we just haven't been told.

From what I know of the Realms though, Karsus still stands supreme.

I mean, if I were "DMing" the event (ie. if it was my canon to develope as I saw fit) I would make the main reason Karsus did succeed be other gods interfering with Mystrl be the reason Karsus succeeded.

But, since I can't produce anything canon myself (at this time :p) then I have to fall back on what I know and I know that Karsus just stole godhood from a god using that god's very own tool. The level of power required to do that is beyond my comprehension.

I mean, we're not talking someone beat up an avatar. No, he stole her godhood, with a spell.

I'll have to see what I can find out about Roland the Blue and see if I can't find the rise of Velsharoon to see if I find either of them compairable but as it stands I don't know of any non-divine being (ie. a being who cannot grant spells, please note that I firmly believe that Kezef could grant spells if he chose to grant them) who took out a god.

In Faiths and Pantheons it states that Velsharoon "discovered" a method laid forth by Talos to become a divine power.

This is not a new thing for Talos, he's been up to the "get a mortal to become a god so's I can exploit them" gambit for ages. Velsharoon is just the most recent one. The . . . exceptional (if you can call it that) thing about Velsharoon is he's managed to survive, by switching his allegence to Azuth (and Mystra, but I believe he only really deals with Azuth). Apparently he's been flirting with Shar to see if he can't switch camps again.

Anyhow, he was a renegade red wizard who's main rival was Tam. I guess when he was cowering under a rock he found a book that laid out Talos' trap. (that's a bit of a tongue in cheek statement, I'm not sure how he discovered Talos' method)

The . . . exceptional (if you can call it that) thing about Velsharoon is he's managed to survive, by switching his allegence to Azuth (and Mystra, but I believe he only really deals with Azuth).

I was just questioning the accuracy of Karsus’s statement.

Ummm. . . and I was just answering the questions I saw. . . are they answered? Do you have more questions?

-Eh, it's somewhat relevant. Anyway, information about Velsharron comes from a few main sources. There are only three, as far as I can remember:

Powers & Pantheons, a 2e sourcebook
Faiths and Pantheons, a 3e sourcebook
Magic of Faerûn, a 3e sourcebook

In the "Faiths and Pantheons - Do's and Dont's" (I think it'd downloadable from the Wizards site) it states that Velsharoon has a monk order as well.

Otherwise I'm not finding anything else :)
