She was on the ship he rescued from pirates enroute to Evermeet.

Karsellyn was travelling to Evermeet to see if the Queen would allow good aligned drow to settle there...

Despite her inner feelings, the Queen said "No" Due to the other elven residents on Evermeet never allowing it.

Boy! Doesn't that sound just like Alustriel telling Drizt to wait outside?

[Yes! I know I spelled his name wrong]

Karsellyn then went back to the mainland...trailed and tracked by a drow assassin helpfully stated in the Evermeet supplement. The ending to that assassin/Karsellyn meeting was left as an exercise for the DM.
