Who would win in a fight between two who can use their minds as a weapon, and faster before you can say Charon's Claw?

RA salvatore charactor, from road of the matriarch. like a level 24 monk.

hm.. not sure of the stats on Kimmuriel, but seeing as he is drow, and the leader of a big, huge, mercanery band, id have to give the edge to him. seeing as the monk probably wouldnt accept help from anybody, while Oblodra might buy a mindflayer or somthing, either way, the drow will do what needs to be done, any way, anyhow. not the nobile kane, though he won't hesitate to kill, he will go about killing in a less dirty way.

And Why Did They Put It There If We Shouldnt Use It?

I hated Kane so much. King Gareth could kill children, and his response would be: "It is the will of the king". According to Kanes battle movements, not even Elimenster could beat him. "He was so fast that he made the Dragons attack each other". Now then, let's talk some modern warfare...some Terroist sucucide bombers let's say. He would run up, to do some kicks or punches of the sort, then? "Aiaiaiaiaiaiaiaiaiaaiaiaiai infidel!" Boom, Kane dies in a explosion.

I was annoyed at how Kane supposedly has taken a "Vow of Poverty", yet he has nifty (and probably expensive) magical items like a flying carpet, and he was quick to justify the idea of kings having immense wealth.

Hypocrite!

Sorry for the confusion, but I am Omega...not Beta. But from what I heard of this divine being....he is one of the sexiest people alive. Not only that! When AO had demanded him to stop playing God, he replied: "I don't play God, playing is for children". Wish I could have met him, which would only lead to gains without losses.

Uh, guys, we havent resolved who can beat who. Both in the novel's standpoints and actual game mechanics. Who here thinks Grandmaster Kane would win over Kimmuriel Oblodra, and vice versa? Both have powerful minds, with Kimmuriel bantering his wits with the illithids, and Kane meditating to gain enlightenment.

Shouldn't there be a hidden meaning between Jarlaxle not trying to fight the monk? Maybe they know each other long ago. Or maybe Kane was a drow once.

Kane's first appearance ( as a FR character) was as a pre-generated character in Bloodstone Wars module H3.

H1 and H2 were released before FR was up and running.

From a combat mechanics standpoint Kane would win because his saves would be high enough to resist most of Kimmurel's best attacks and a Psion (without some sort of buffs) cannot stand toe to toe with an opponent like Kane. Of course not having their stats in front of me this would be my conclusion but I could be wrong. I think Lord Karsus is right, need to know the situation. It is a question that really cannot be answered without knowing how the meeting went down in the first place.

From a novelization standpoint it would be whoever RAS wants to have win.

I agree. He stated as such in the opening/forward to the 'Cleric Quintet' compelation, saying that he REALLY wanted to write the series about a monk, but the TSR folks wouldn't let him 'cause monks were going "bye-bye" for the D&D edition at the time (2nd, I think).

As for who I think would win, I'd say Kane because I get the feeling that he's just that much more "superior" to most other folks in "Salvatore's Realms". I mean, he has those two dragon sisters in check, and they seem like a force to be reckoned with. Kimmuriel, on the other hand, seems either equivalent to Jarlaxle and Artemis or lower, and it kinda seemed like MAYBE Kane and Artemis MIGHT have been nearly on par, though with Kane being a bit higher.

 I don't know...not enough information!

(Though I REALLY WISH that Kane had beaten the crap out of Artemis, just to knock the "stoic/emo/'I hate everyone' crybaby" complex out of him. That would have been cool.)

It's impossible to resolve such a thing, so you'll find that many people don't bother.

This is really just an X vs. Y thread. Many people around here dislike those types of threads because people can argue back and forth forever about what the conditions would be, why such characters would be fighting, and whether or not actual game stats or portrayals in novels (which are unreliable at best) should be considered more important.

We don't know to what extent Kane "had them in check". We are told they were wary of Kane, but for all we know, if it came down to the dragons fighting Kane, the dragons might have won!

And that goes for most of these X vs. Y theads--just because X seems to be weaker than Y, doesn't mean he couldn't win under certain circumstances. Nothing is guaranteed.

From what I read, it was pretty clear that the dragon sisters wanted nothing to do with Kane, and believed that the outcome of a fight between them was uncertain at best, and most likely to their own detriment.

As it is, though, I would pick Kane in a straight-up fight against Kimmuriel simply because I feel that Kane is an epic level character and Kimmuriel is not. This is just a "feeling" I gather from how the characters are described in the book, and I have no official stats or anything to compare the two, so it's at best just my personal opinion.

And that goes for most of these X vs. Y theads--just because X seems to be weaker than Y, doesn't mean he couldn't win under certain circumstances. Nothing is guaranteed.

I agree that nothing would be guaranteed. It would come down to many different factors for something like that, including (but not limited to) whether it was one-on-one, if eiter combatant has allies, who has the advantage (surprise, terrain, circumstance, foreknowledge) AND, most importantly, dice rolls.

Well, this is exactly why high level people of all types don't usually go around trying to wipe each other out. They don't want to take the risk that THEY might be the losers.

Anyway, the dragon sisters weren't exactly enemies of Kane to begin with. I just don't agree that Kane "had them in check" or anything.

I'd hate to be blamed for continuing an arguement, here, and I'm really not trying to argue, but I have to disagree. I agree that they weren't necessarily "enemies", though my statement that he had the dragon sisters "in check" was accurate. He's one of those "know-it-all" type of characters who is always in control, the epitome of control, and he seemed to know that they were wary of him, for one reason or another, and used that to his advantage during their encounter.

Now to say that he's going to prevail against a pair of dragons, I can't say that. MAYBE it's just a case of his reputation preceeding him, and that he's not all that and the dragon sisters could mop the floor with him. Who knows? Or maybe it's the other way around, and if it came to blows then he'd have himself some new dragonhide vestments. One doesn't always have to be more powerful than another to hold that person (or persons) in check, with intimidation and reputation going a long way.

-I always found the idea that not one, but two Dragons were so weary of Kane, especially considering how their relationship with Jarlaxle and Entreri, both of whom are no pushovers themselves.

Also, Jarlaxle and Artemis seemed to be intimidated by the sisters; they knew the ladies were dragons, and were cautious enough not to warrent their ire as a means of self preservation. Similar to the way that the sisters responded to Kane, from what I recall.
Lord Karsus

-What I mean is that Jarlaxle and Entreri combined pose a greater threat to the sisters than Kane. Entreri is...16th level, and Jarlaxle is 18th level? That's 34 combined levels, as opposed to Kane's twentysomething levels. Jarlaxle and Entreri are also unprediatable and evil, whereas Kane is predictable, and good.

-What I'm saying is that you'd think the sisters would either have a little more fear/respect for Entreri and Jarlaxle, or a little less fear/respect for Kane.

In first edition monks were so bad that after one time that ended with my players wiping out an evil monastary with no damage whatsoever...

They asked me to never run monks again...and I have not.

Since no setting or variables were given to this match, I will put in my own ...

solo fight...no backups at all...first edition rules...ten by ten foot room

Kane is slaughtered...his hp are too low...his ac is very bad...

In any other setting I bow to those who are it's champions :)

Is he just a straight Monk or did he get a Prestige Class at some point? Monks really aren't that powerful considering what the caster classes can do. If properly equipped a Psion could easily take on a Monk of equal level. Especially if he's taken Vow of Poverty which doesn't do as much at higher levels when magic items tip the scales in the favor of other people.

Well all of you forget that the Monk does not have to hit him or even move very much to kill the Drow. He can do his over-powered speak one word move that he used on Artemis to release the hostage Ranger. It does not matter if the Drow has a strong will of mind....so does Artemis (the shard vs Artemis will). So in logical terms, 1 on 1, there is no one who could take him on.

and if RAS were writing it, Drizzt would win hands down. In fact, he would single-handedly take out all of Kane's friends and Gareths army, and probably eat the Dragon sisters as an after-thought.

Its not that Drizzt is a great fighter, you see, it's that anyone who gets close enough to him and hears his depressing, inane drivel commits suicide. ;)

Not only that, but am I the only one who notices when talking about how good of a fighter Artemis is, it reads "Rival of Drizzt Do'Urden!"...but never do I read in a Drizzt novel "Rival of Artemis!". That is because RAS plays favorites, showing Artemis is trying to aspire to Drizzt's status and not the other way around. If they are Rivals, it should be a equal standpoint and not a slightly lesser being.

If they are Rivals, it should be a equal standpoint and not a slightly lesser being.

-Not necessarily. Rivals can be "on the same level", which Drizzt and Entreri mostly are, but rivals can also be on "different levels". For example, Los Angeles Dodgers and the San Francisco Giants are considered rivals, a vestige of their Brooklyn/New York glory days. The Dodgers are a vastly superior team, as compared to the Giants nowadays. The two teams are rivals, but they aren't "on the same level".

A better analogy would have been "Yankees vs Red Sox" (The more popular Rivals in baseball). I am dissapointed in you since you are from New York and having no Pride for Either the Yankees or Mets.

But for the general over all view, you are implying that Drizzt is "vastly superior" than Artemis even though they are rivals correct?

-No, that wouldn't be a better analogy, because the Yankees and the Red Sox are on par with each other. My point, that you missed, is that rivals don't have to be on the same field.

-And don't talk baseball with me, kid. You're overmatched.

If I may... I think what LK is getting at is that the Giants and Dodgers are traditional rivals, but that doesn't necessarily mean that at the moment they are comparable in their line up, with a significant disparity in their skill level. That disparity does not however remove the rivalry of the two teams.

As to Rinos comments, that sounded more like a swipe at the general views of Drizzt fanbois, but I could be mistaken.

As to being the most well-rounded person, that could very well be true, but it is kinda poor form to say it... its generally perceived better to have others bestow that accolade upon you than it is for you to say it of yourself. Deeds not words and all that. ;)

Belive me good sir, I would indeed show it if I could, but with a certain person that will report the slightest off topic post, I can not have the oppritunity to allow others to back up my so called claim. If anyone wants to talk about something that no one is on AIM or MSN, feel free to PM me. I have quite a few very intresting conversations with some of you, and many others I'm sure that would wish to intervine as well. But thanks for the benifit of doubt Stig

And by the way Lord, try me. I am probally the most well-rounded person on this forum to talk about with anything: Cars/Sports/Games/Music/Parties/Fighting. It's usually why I take a few days to reply to some post when I'm away from my computer. Without looking up on any "sources", I am pretty sure I could out do you in baseball.

-Somehow, I doubt that. Both points.

-A very simply one: Who was the most dominant left-handed pitcher within a five year time frame?

I doubt you'll get reported for off-topic posts so long as you remain reasonable and civil. Presuming that I know of whom you speak, I doubt that they're as petty and vindictive as you seem to be under the impression they are.

-Nope. Koufax. Good pick, though.

Well you must be more specific, most dominant is a opinion, you could have said he was the first major leaguer to pitch more than three no-hitters .

-Statistically (ie, facts, not opinions), he was the most dominant pitcher in a five-year time span ('61 to '66).

This was not mentioned. Throw me another, unless a certain person is going to attack me for going off topic, then don't worry about it and maybe you can PM another instead.

Kane is bald!!!!! GG HAHA

And those of you who say Jarlaxelle is too? Nope! Had grown blonde hair at the end of Road of The Patriarch.

-A time frame was not needed. Thoughout the history of baseball, Koufax was the most dominant pitcher in a five year span. I'll PM you another question.

That's correct, but my post was also a tongue-in-cheek response to EB's loaded questions about whether or not posters here love Drizzt and think he's better than Artemis (or various other evil characters).

Assuming you are talking about me...

I don't report posts that are off-topic, I report posts that are rude, baiting, trolling, or attempts at creating drama here. Like the martyrish post I just replied to. Stop referring to me like that in your posts--I consider it a form of harassment and will treat it as such.

This thread has clearly gone off topic, I am simply going to close it.
