I'm re-starting a stalled FR campaign as of this past weekend and a bunch of us got wondering: does 'common' exist within FR, or is it all regional languages such as chondathan, alzhedo, ect?

There are really only 3 or so 'big' human languages, and then the racial ones, so I'm wondering if common is core D&D or if it includes FR as well.

Thanks in advance.

The common tongue certainly exists in Faerūn. it even receives its own paragraph in the Forgotten Realms Campaign Setting. It's little more than a trade language, a pigdin of Chondathan and about every other human language, but almost every human and many nonhuman, from one end of the continent to the other, speak it as a second language. So, while it lacks the vocabulary, nuances, and figures of speech of more complex languages, it means that, with a bit of pointing and patience, you'll be able to make anyone understand that you're looking for a inn for the night and a farrier for your horse.

'Common' is the trade tongue utilised [and spread] throughout Faerūn via merchants/traders/etc. It is a "universal" tongue. However, there will be different dialects, etc.

I will note, also, that current lore would seem to give more focus to the different dialects, like Chondathan and Illuskan or example, while in the older Realmlore, the Common tongue would often feature more frequently.

excellent news!

now my players will finally have some incentive to pick up alternate languages. however, with two elves, a half elf and a human, most of them just speak in their flowery language and annoy the human anyhow...
