| hoMonkulus08-30-07, 06:30 PM | I've read through the 3/3.5e published info, and it has a little bit about the Ride and the horsed barbarians who live there. Are there any older 1e/2e products that detail that region? I remember reading somewhere (don't recall where) that the barbarians are the remnants of an ancient kingdom/society. Any help would be appreciated! |
| Old Sage08-30-07, 09:28 PM | I'm assuming by 3e/3.5e "published info" you mean Mysteries of the Moonsea and the Sons of Gruumsh module? For older Realmslore... There has been very little written about the Ride. You're likely to find some tidbits in the 3e tome Races of Faerūn. In addition to the 3e FRCS, see the 1e and 2e FRCS boxed sets for more little odds and ends about the Ride. Also, the 2e [i]Warriors and Priests of the Realms has a few references. There's some bits and pieces in the 2e Moonsea supplement and in the 2e Ruins of Zhentil Keep box set -- the details about the Ride in the boxed set focus mainly on the barbarians of the Ride who destroyed a large Zhentarim caravan which was en route to Glister. And, finally, a particular favorite of mine... there's a set of really old POLYHEDRON articles [Elminster's Everwinking Eye] that do a tour of the Moonsea. |

Any help would be appreciated! Yes, your correct. The Barbarians of the Ride are the descendants of nomadic people who lived in Low Netheral. This information can be found in several sources, including Lost Empires of Faerun. It's also mentioned in at least one article on the WotC website - located here. (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/frcc/20070808) You can also find a few bits of non-canon lore about the Barbarians of the Ride in my article on The Tortured Lands, located over at Candlekeep here. (http://www.candlekeep.com/library/articles/torturedlands.htm) I've developed more material on the barbarians of the ride, but just haven't had a chance to polish it up into a final version. |
| hoMonkulus08-31-07, 03:42 PM | Thanks Old Sage, MarkusTay, and Halidan--all that was very helpful! MarkusTay: your realms maps ROCK!!! |
| MarkusTay6309-01-07, 02:45 PM | Thank You, kind sir. @Halidan- Intersting, thank you for those links. Perhaps you could submit your material on the Ride to WotC's new DI program? It sounds exactly like the kind of regional pieces they are looking for. |
| Chloramantis09-06-07, 11:25 AM | I have been interested in the Ride for a while and I have come up with a bit of information. The Ride barbarians ARE descendants of Low Netheril. The Rengarth tribe, which were a magic fearing nomadic tribe during the time of ancient Netheril, are one of the four remaining peoples now in Faerun. The Rengarth/Ride barbarains are tall, fair, blue eyed and black haired, much like their Netherese descendants. |

| MarkusTay6309-06-07, 06:25 PM | The Rethgarth barabarians came AFTER the fall of Netheril. Like the Uthgardt, they are decendants of the Angardt, who were the pre-cursers of the Netherese as well. All of these peoples were most likely decendents of the even earlier Gur, who migrated across the Moonsea area from the East thousands upon thousands of years ago. The only un-related group of Northern barabrians would be the Reghedman - the Barbarians from the Icewind dale region. More then likely they, like the Rauthym and Illuskans, are the last remnants of a tall, blonde, blue-eyed people that were destroyed during the Sundering. So he was correct, those paricular barbarians were descendents of the low Netherese. In fact, Beorunna's Well, wich can be seen on my Silver Marches map, is a site holy to the barabarians - but is named after a Netherese leader (the Bey of Runlatha) who lead his people west after the fall. He is remembered as Berun among the Illuskans - the father of the Uthgardt people. The Angardt were the ancestors you are thinking of. |
| MarkHall09-06-07, 08:25 PM | Yes, but he said "much like their Netherese descendants." That means the Netherese were the descendants of these barbarians. To be correct, he would have needed to say "much like their Netherese ancestors," because they are descended from these ancestors. |
| MarkusTay6309-06-07, 09:17 PM | Sorry, my bad... I was looking at his first use of the word 'decendents'. :( |
| MarkusTay6309-07-07, 03:01 PM | Halidan has been gracious enough to update his his 'journal' on the Moonsea North with info on The Ride - you can view it HERE. (http://forum.candlekeep.com/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=9863) Once again, well done Halidan. :) |

(http://forum.candlekeep.com/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=9863) Once again, well done Halidan. :) Thanks Markus - I appeciate the vote of confidence. I'm still looking for all of the bits and pieces I wrote for that Ride campaign - they're scattered across several hundred unlabeled floppy discs in my office. I'll be posting them over at Candlekeep as I find them. |
| Chloramantis09-10-07, 12:33 AM | Ancestors. Descendants are the people who come after you. What's the problem? The Ride Barbarians are DESCENDED from the Netherese! Hence, the Netherese (before) are ancestors of the Ride barbarians (now). Anyways, I guess in Races of Faerun it says that the Angardt tribe became the Ride barbarians, but in fact I was a mistake and it should have been the Rengarth, because the Rengarth broke away from the Angardt do to their fear of magic which the Angardt embraced. |
