I heard rumours that it could be Drizzt? Reasong being: Drizzt seems to be a causer of Chaos, though he always has good intentions. It has even been said that the Drow are wrong to hate Drizzt and mistook Loth in hating him. She actually hates Jarlaxell more seeing that he organizes situations/people. I haven't read all the Drizzt books, but have heard that he whorships some stupid Druid God. I don't care for Drow, I am just intrested in Chosens because they are usually powerful and are more intresting to my taste. Thus I like too read the Twilight War series despite many story errors in it. And for the record, I really, really, hate it when the drow all smile at once. It just makes me imagine 4 mentally challenge people staring at each other too dumb founded for words.

easy killer. but as to your question, there is a difference between chosen and favored, you can be favored by a god, which merely makes it that they don't hate you. While being chosen is something that a god actually has to invest in, so making your chosen takes some time and effort. Somthing I hardly espect a god of evil and chaos to do when she can jsut get some sort of huge balor to step in when she wants them to.

Um...

Your sig only shows up on the first post you make on a thread.

And Drizzt is NOT a Chosen of Lolth. We have a list of Chosen. I believe Old Sage or LK has the list handy.

Says you.No. Rather, says WotC.

Regardless in the third book [or was it the second?] of the "Starlight & Shadows" trilogy, we are told that Liriel is a Chosen of Lolth because her rival claims it is so. After discussions with Elaine, it was decided that she may be either a Chosen or an Ex-Chosen. It's never been completely ascertained... so it's been left as vague as possible.

There is another, but you'll have to read a certain set of novels in order to discover it. Mentioning it hear will do some damage to the storyline itself.

Lolth had chosen one character to be her 8th aspect. You will find her name in War of the Spider Queen VI. There is no known "Chosen of Lolth" though, i.e. one that would be comparable to the Seven Sisters. Only very few deities of Faerūn have somesuch, BTW.

Actually, as I remember from the Servant of the Shard series, it clearly states on the back of the book quoting: (I know this isn't exactly what it says for the internet is gay and I can't find it on google and it's been too long since I read it, so maybe another person could quote what it says)
You escaped me, to the dagger that could not pennatrate you.

Rofl, you make it sound as if they are Shar posers. From what I have read, when somone is a chosen, they are quite well-known. Even Shar's chosen was announced in Shadowstorm. But anyway, my point was: it was a speculation I have heard from others that are Drizzt fans. It could work with the story quite well and it would only enhance the readers intrest in this character even more.

Can we try and put the "L" Back in "Lolth"? ;)

I mean by all means spell it the alternative way "Lloth" if that tickles your fancy, but as was shown in yet another recent thread Loth = Yugoloth, and Lolth = The goddess of the drow. Just a note for you to take or leave at your whim.

Also, nowhere does it state that Lolth hates, dislikes, or holds any particular grudge towards Jarlaxle-- Please note the correct spelling of his name if you have the time.

In fact it is later shown quite clearly that the back story of the dagger had nothing to do with Lolth whatsoever, but was merely interpreted as such by Matron Mother Baenre.

That said, Jarlaxle is for Lolth, just another piece in the chaotic game of Sava so to speak she plays with her followers on a day to day basis-- Do note I am not suggesting he is any manner a major or minor player in the current Sava game from The Lady Penitent.

Quite well known only insofar that you the reader have heard of them. For the most part, the chosen of gods remain hidden to avoid any unwanted attention from those who mean to take their seat of power, or remove a hated enemy from the running.

I always thought that Jarlaxle (i think i spelled it right ;) ) was not in very good standings with the spider queen though to the old matron of house baenre thought that he was because of the the third house's current matron mother. Or it maybe jarlaxe just said he, not the spider queen, hated the other. Either way, I do know that the spider queen detested the way he "organized" the fore mentioned mercanery band.

Either way, I do know that the spider queen detested the way he "organized" the fore mentioned mercanery band.

Really? I sometimes seem to read different novels or get different impressions. Obviously, some authors seem to portray their main characters as if they actually were important to a deity ... or that a deity would be really really interested in a certain character. The problem here is that such authors tend to compare these deities to other, mortal opponents of said characters. This more often than not leads to gross misconceptions by author, reader and gamer alike. For, IMHO, if played along the lines of rules and lore and logic, even the lowest demigod will see a mortal (no matter who he/she is), even a chosen dead in two heartbeats - should said mortal really annoy the deity in question.

No, do not reply with illusions or delusions of grandeur on Drizzt's or Jarlaxle's behalf. Any half-decent DM will tell you that they would be stone dead in case Lolth was really annoyed by them. Why are they still about? Because Lolth simply couldn't care less.

From what I have read, when somone is a chosen, they are quite well-known.Errr.. no.

It's important not to make blanket statements about the Realms regarding what people "know" and what their "opinions" may be about a particular aspect of the setting. Diversity and intimate subtleties give the FR setting so much more depth, and allows plenty of options for intrigiuing and unusual campaigns.

Thus, your common Realms folk may not know of or about such beings of incredible power -- either by name, reputation, or what your grandmother said she once saw. It's important to remember also that anything individuals *do* learn about the Chosen is likely almost entirely based on bards tales, rhymes, or just fanciful speculations for example, which largely form the basis of most of the "public" knowledge regarding the Chosen. Not intimate details, and certainly nothing specific, just rumor, hearsay, and idle speculation in the local tavern on a cold and wintry night.

I aggree with this, if she really would hate him, he would be dead or at least every Priestress would try to kill him.

Also Lolth doesn't seem to be interested in complete choas all the time. Think for House Baenre, it is the first House for over 2000 Years now and gives some stability to Menzoberranzan. That doesn't sound like much chaos for me. So she maybe doesn't have a problem with Bregan D'Arthe too, who knows?
Maybe if there are some powerfull, stable parts they can spread more choas around ;)

Jarlaxelle does whorpship Lloth in any way. He even shaved his hair disregarding the rest of the drow race. He orginizes everyone dispising a chaotic situation. Gives everyone a purpose and feels all lives hold a value even if it is a enemy (drizzt). There is no way you can say Jarlaxelle is in que with The gay spider queen. I never read The war of the spider queen, but can somone satisfy my needs and tell me the drow did die off? Lathander or Shar took a sh*t on Lloth? The battle ragers steped on every matron mother that glanced at them the wrong way? They died underneath the earth where they belong and were also born there, never to acomplish anything but under every persons feet never to be known as in comparsion to a bunch of rats?

I think her problem, and the problem I am, and perhaps several other members are, drawing from your posts/ replies is simple.

You do not seem content to discuss or debate the topic, instead opting to aimlessly, maliciously, and blindly bash things you don't seem to know anything about, nor care to educate yourself on.

If you want to rant and complain incoherently-- I say incoherently as several parts of your varied posts have been either difficult to read due to poor grammar, or in turn having aspects of them mis-spelled, even after I responded with the correct way to write the characters names-- please then instead take your unwelcome "discussions" elsewhere.

What you are doing is considered Flaming in it's base form. Your opinions, while perhaps valid for you, are being put across aggressively, and in a manner that not only belittles yourself, but drags down the friendly atmosphere that has been established here.

In the future, if you do indeed plan on having a future here, please refrain from forming your responses/ remarks in a way such as this "is in que with The gay spider queen" or "They died underneath the earth where they belong and were also born there, never to acomplish anything but under every persons feet never to be known as in comparsion to a bunch of rats?".

The former has no canon relevance as you are either trying to suggest that Lolth is Gay as in happy, or chipper, which she is by her very nature not, or instead you are suggesting she is a Homosexual, which in turn has never been eluded to nor shown as such. Thus it must be that you are using it in a derogatory manner, to which these boards do not allow.

The latter while your opinion, one which few if any here will share, should be formed in a less virulent manner, and put across in a way that you back up your wild allegations with some manner of thought tree, or canon quote to show how you came to such a conclusion. An example of this might be "I think that the Drow are filthy rats because _________", and you would then fill in the blank with what makes you feel as such.

Outside of that, if you can manage these few simple things, I see no reason why we all can't come around to posting pleasantly with one another once more.

... well... back to the main subject.

I still maintain that Lolth or Lloth, or how ever you wish to address her/it, is to greedy to have chosen. Chosen is to imply that you some what trust your subjects, which is somthing she doesn't do. For example the Chosen of Mystra have a certain amount of weave energy's stored in them, and there for making them powerful and dangerous to there god. For this reason I can't see evil Gods having many or really any chosen, the closest they come would be specified PrC's.

I actually go a step further than this, and consider the Chosen of Mystra to be the only "Chosen" that have any reason for existing. Ed has explained that the Chosen actually act as a check on Mystra's power (she is the most powerful goddess). While any god can have a "chosen one", there's no reason why any other god besides Mystra needs to give portions of their power up to a mortal to act as a check on their power (and in fact, many gods wouldn't even want to do this!). Any god can favor whatever mortals they wish, but I think Chosen should be unique.

Which is even more likly to keep Lolth away from it, whats the fun in having all this power in one being (other than herself that is) when you could put it in about 8 and watch them fight. SO if she couldnt do this then I dont think she ever would.

One thing I'd wish for "The Legend of Drizzt Do'Urden". What if Lloth tries to break Drizzt's spirit by being a good female drow in disguise.?.It's all in her grand plan. Then she lets Drizzt fall in love with her and seduce him. Lloth has a plan for Drizzt. To make him the ultimate chaos bringer.

Ya, but that's how the arthor gets facts across, he's not always gona come out and say that this is a fact and you should never say anything is unless I say so, I think we should take alittle intiative and delve deeper into the chaos that is Lolth, for even if she doesn't favor him it is a great facade of chaos and Deception anything less and the goddess wouldnt be the godess of chaos. To anyone who plays Halo will be pleased to know that the humans are the Forerunners (An expected but welcome suprise). Just as in comparsion of Drizzt being one of Lolth's chosen is unheard of to many of you. Note: You tell me that in the War of the Spider Queen it was announced a chosen. As I recall, a Diety is not limited to one chosen? Look at the Hunters Blade Trilogy. How much Chaos was brought about because the orcs messed with the wrong Drow? The Drow lost a War before, and Lolth was pleased even though they failed. Imagine if other Drow found out Drizzt to be a chosen of their beloved Goddess? It would create so much turmoil that she would be having muiltple orgasims with each Drow going crazy at the thought that some Paladine want to be Drow is a chosen of the Spider Queen. All I'm asking of you, is just keep the thought in mind and don't turn the other cheek. In any fantasy novel, possibilties are endless.

Yes, because Drizzt is the only drow who causes chaos for other drow. Heck, with the definition you're using, almost anyone who conflicts with the drow could be Lolth's Chosen. Or anyone who causes any chaos anywhere...

Lolth probably has a special love for Eilistraee and her followers.

Again, what is so special about Drizzt? Just because he is a popular character to fans of the setting doesn't mean he's extra important to Lolth within the setting.

ExtinctionBeta ... not the drow* have lost a war, but an army raised by House Baenre lost a war. Why? Because one author wanted them to lose a war and turned it that way. Just MHO, of course. Why? Because that same author had his hero win hand to hand battles with a balor twice and a marilith once. If you know what these fiends can do, you'd know that said hero had no chance whatsoever in defeating these foes, unless Tymora had a field day thrice. You do have an idea about how the game itself actually works, don't you?

Drow history is filled with battles, wars won and lost. Lost Empires of Faerūn is your frind here. Keep in mind that the drow neither fight as a race. They fight in groups/armies/squads send from city states or just houses of these city states. And they won their fair share of battles too.

There is no need for a deity to have a chosen at all times. Lolth had one only recently and she became the eight' aspect. If people feel inclined to think of Drizzt as being chosen (i.e. blessed) by Lolth, so be it. That cleric did so. But that is simply that, the thought of one highly unimportant novel figure. If it is clear that someone is indeed a Chosen, there will be no doubt about it, in-novel and in-setting. Example here is indeed Erevis Cale or the Chosen of Mystra.

*Drow is singular and plural, there is no "drows".

@ Phelf_Der_Zemit ... her original name was Lolth and it has been documented that Lloth was a spelling mistake in one of the early Drizzt books, which was carried on in all RAS novels, as well as some of Elaine Cunningham's. In-setting, the explanation was that this is a regional alias of Lolth, used only in the Northdark (Menzoberranzan, Ched Nasad - as described in Demihuman Deities). Recent novels have gone back to the original name of Lolth and rightly so.

If I remember correctly Ertuu first thought that Drizzt was only a scout of a larger Drow army, so he was worried about killing him and getting trouble with all the Drow and her Godess. After he found out that Drizzt was on his own, Drizzts sword saved him from Ertuus attack and Drizzt could kill him by suprise.
IMHO this was luck for sure, but not impossible to happen :)

Heya,

Because he is a drow. Spider queen the God of Drows. I don't think Mystra would have somone that is a master of swords her chosen for magic.

Storm Silverhand? Or maybe Dove Falconhand?

They have both been shown in novels to be quite handy with a sword (far outstripping many other sword wielders in the Realms, but are by no means the best of the best - it's arguable that Drizzt sits on the top of that ladder as well), and the latter is not as handy with magic as her other sisters.

Of course, the Seven are literally Mystra's daughters, so maybe that makes a difference.

I should say right here and now that I object to the use of the word "gay" in a derogatory sense. I'm going to ask that stop doing that, please. (There is a higher percentage of gay posters on this forum that you might realize.)

After he found out that Drizzt was on his own, Drizzts sword saved him from Ertuus attack and Drizzt could kill him by suprise.
IMHO this was luck for sure, but not impossible to happen :)

You mean he scored an instant kill on a unique balor with his strike? :nonono:

No, not instant dead. I just read the part again and Drizzt was allready losing but than he hit the Balor with his Ice Scimitar which caused imense pain to Ertu so he tried to retreat. This gave Drizzt the chance to end the fight.

I dont know the exact official stats for this scimitar (the one he found at the dragon) but in the book it said that it took some of Ertus life essence.
In my opinion this could be an big advantage to win the fight and even if its not 100% canon, its just a novel to spread some fun :)

Back then, Icingdeath was a +4 frostbrand scimitar. Even so, a balor was no fire-based creature and as such not really bothered by the weapon, standard damage aside. The author added a bit of flair to it all ... as he usually does ... and off went Errtu.
Today, given tzhe power of a 3RE balor, the scimitar-wielder would simply run and scream for cover.

What? You make it sound like chuck norris. If Drizzt were to ever fight himself, he would win!

The Balor has an ability called "Death Throes". When a Balor is killed it explodes doing 100 points of damage to everything in a 100ft radius, with a DC 30 reflex save for half. Even if Drizzt saves thats 50 points of damage, and one would assume that isn't the only wound he suffered from the fight.

Extinction ... in case you are wondering what people are talking about ... there are rules in this game and setting, followed by the goblin warrior up to a Great Wyrm Red Dragon or an archfiend like Mephistopheles.

A balor looks like this ...
http://www.d20srd.org/srd/monsters/demon.htm#balor

... and that's just your ordinary balor. Errtu is a touch better, I would assume.

Have a dip into the rules to get a feeling ...

"Errtu"...I have seen this word many times in The Silent Blade. I never knew what it was so I never gave it much thought. And thank you for informing me, I appreciate it and any other times in the future you decide to assist me with things I am ignorant on. Thanks =D

I will go one better! You can read a bit of older lore on Errtu in the Villains' Lorebook, which is a free download here:

http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/dnd/downloads

That version of Errtu is AD&D though, i.e. D&D 2E. Then, Drizzt's chance were marginally better.

BTW, nigh all books there are actually lorebooks on the setting*, so help yourself to some hours of flair while you study the rules of the game (linked above) as well.

*The background of the setting works without the rules. As in: the Spine of the World is still the Spine of the World, regardless of edition.

ExtinctionBeta Given that during the ToT Lolth gave Ertuu the means to return to the material plane to kill Drizzt, I seriously doubt whether she would be calling him her chosen. She would never have believed the he could defeat Ertuu, and indeed he was loosing until Wulfgur joined the fight. Lolth's words were something like Drizzt is a pittance but that she would enjoy seeing Ertuu destroy him for the inconvenience he has caused. Now obviously being lolth she may well have been lying but I think she was saying it like it is in this case.

From what I understand the theory that Drizzt is a chosen is just that, a theory.
Granted he has shaken things up in Menzoberanzan, his home city, but other then that he has had very little impact on the drow race as a whole.
The spider queen is the godess of the drow, and as such one could say that all the drow belong to her, however Eilistraee is the godess of good-aligned drow, so that would mean that Drizzt would belong to her, but then Vhaeraun (who im not sure is still alive but still) is the god of MALE drow, so one could argue that Drizzt belongs to him.

As it stands though neither of these dieties have any claim to him since Drizzt is a follower of Mielikki, and so when he dies his soul rightly belongs to her.
A chosen is someone granted tremendous power by their diety, this is in addition to whatever power they get from their class levels, and it takes alot for any diety to create one.
The chosen are usally used by their god for some great task related to their dogmas, for instance Cadderly of Denier created one of the greatest temples to Denier in the realms and Fzoul Chembryl of Bane is the leader of the church and zhentarims with the goal of eventually taking over the world in Banes name (immortality really comes in handy for those long term goals dont it? :D )

If, for sake of argument Drizzt was a chosen of Lolth there are a qouple of things I cant see her letting him do:
1. Being a male. Its no secret males are cannonfodder at best and a weak annoyance at worst as far as Lolth and her clergy are concearned.
2. Getting away with all that slight and blasphemy against her. Big D is guilty of everything from mercy to surface elves to destruction of a major temple of Lolth, and the spider queen is not known for her tolerance, understanding or forgivness.
3. Pledging himself to another diety, and a human diety of the surface forests at that.
Queile Veladorn (sp) is a special case since Eilistraee and Mystra agreed to "share" her as both their chosen, which is extremly rare. The odds of Lolth sharing anyone or anything willingly with anyone is zero, siltch and nil.
4. Staying alive. A chosen is as directly linked to a diety as any mortal creature can be, meaning that if Lolth really wanted to blast Drizzt off the face of Faerun, she could if he was her chosen without anyone having a say in the matter. As it stands however she cant just throw a deathbolt out of thin air at him since if she tried at the very least Mielikki would interfeer, and odds are good some other gods would butt in as well just to spite Lolth.

I should say right here and now that I object to the use of the word "gay" in a derogatory sense. I'm going to ask that stop doing that, please. (There is a higher percentage of gay posters on this forum that you might realize.)
You beat me to the post; I'd add the curious note that calling drow and deities thereof* derogations such as "gay" does little but call attention to one's own ignorance.

* regularly shown to be unconcerned with Western/Christian ideas on sexuality, including and especially fidelity and monosexuality

Did you not read the Hunters Blade Trilogy? Did you not remember the scene when the drow all talked about the pleasure of casuing chaos, and all smiled at one with exact timing. 4 of them. So you are telling me if you were with 3 of your friends, and said somthing all of you agreed on...then all 4 of you suddenly smiled at once with perfect timing..and somone else observing were to see it, would not think there to be either somthing wrong with you or just maybe the all 4 of you are extreamly close to one antother in another way..?

You're right! When people are lovers, their facial expressions are in perfect sync with each other, always. It's a dead giveaway.

On a more realistic note: it's pretty much neurologically proven that people who are close to each other, and comfortable, when conversing, will mimic each others' gesticulations, from facial expressions to hand motions. It's where the yawning thing is thought to come from, in part.

Otherwise, boy, I've been banging my best friend for 12 years and never even noticed.

DRIZZT IS NOT THE CHOSEN OF LLOTH...She just favors him! :P

You see authors ... that is what happens when a peripheral NPC in a novel speaks about her thoughts on a character. It grows arms and legs of dragon-proportions and suddenly people start talking about it as if it was common lore and accepted fact.

I wonder what peasant Ferbold of Daggerdale thought about that cow Frieda of his neighbour Samlas. The cow who constantly gave more milk than Ferbold's own. "Blessed or chosen by the Cow Goddess!", I'd gather. If Frieda would be a famous scimitar-wielding or orc-double-axe swinging thingy, she'd be a Chosen of the Cow Goddess in no-time.

Did anyone get the feeling that Yavanoe (or how ever it was spelled) Baerne was the chosen of lolth for a while. By here races standerds she was ancient, eclipsing two-thousand years of life, and being very fertial, also she was very powerful cleric, goin epic obviously. I always thought that she raided Mithral Hall because she lost the tittle of chosen and wanted to secure her place in the history books with one final conquest, but thats just a parting theory of mine.
GothicDan

10-04-07, 03:47 PM
Well, we know as of the Villain's Lorebook, statistically she was granted no abilities by Lolth.

I'm pretty sure being a Cleric 25 (I think) is plenty of magic on its own.

Still it just seems that if anybody, before the now chosen, would be chosen it would have been her. Though now that i think aboout it her present chosen is really restricted to doing things, seeing as she's half spider, well I know that wouldnt hinder her to much but it just seems she's not using her chosen to it's full abilaty.

Are you retarted? All 4 of them smiled at each other for the cause of chaos...then they went to go do it. So you're telling me all 4 of them smiled because they other 2 drow wanted sex? Is that logical? So if somone and thier wife were lovers, and me and my friend were evil...and saw them in love..we would all smile??

reread that part of the book, they were a pair of lovers, they ran of to do "it" because they had been away from each other for so long. Besides some people get off to different things, I guess drow are sydistic little people that like chaos, thats hardly "gay".
