| Ravenglade10-16-07, 03:53 PM | It regards the language Mulhorandi, in "Races of Faerun" it states it as being written with the "Celestial Alphabet". I know most people would use Egyptian hieroglyphs, but are there any examples of what the Celestial Alphabet is supposed to look like? Would this pantheon really use the same Celestial language as other deities of the upper planes? I'm not short on creative potential here, but I was wondering if there are any previous examples in Wizards products. Thanks for any help or suggestions! |
| Red_Wizard10-16-07, 04:05 PM | Unfortunately there are no sources from which to draw the celestial alphabet. The problem I ran into myself was the same thing, as I had plans to create the Thayan dialect of Mulhorandi, and ultimately came to a dead lock with the celestial requirement. |
| Ravenglade10-16-07, 04:40 PM | Thanks for the response. I have a friend working on releasing a "mulhorandi" themed tileset for nwn2, and we got into language discussion today. To anyone who cares to suggest: what would YOU use to depict a mulhorandi alphabet or runes if you had to? |
| 1 ton ghost10-16-07, 09:38 PM | it would probably have graduated into a more sophisticated set of characters though i suspect and actual "alphabet" in the purer sense evolved. they were snatched from a distant plane (read, Earth...heh) for the Imaskari and bla bla bla. after many thousand years, i'm sure their antiquated and inefficient hieroglyphs passed on in favor of a more reasonable set. celestial seems to make sense as they were horribly oppressed and appealed, i'm sure, daily, to old gods, new gods, whatever for delieverance. goodly gods often used celestial so it stands to reason after some divine intervention and so on, the adoption made sense. a hunch though. 1 revolution later, and viola... they've been pretty damned religious given their hard genesis to faerun so they stuck to their roots. apart from the pharoh, it's decidely theocratic. then you got Thay. they use the Infernal set, but even they, evolved Mulani, "kept it real" if you'll excuse the expression. |
| Red_Wizard10-16-07, 10:23 PM | Thats the problem with conversion, especially for me. You have Egyptian at the base, translated into Imaskari, converted to Celestial, and then finally transcribed again into infernal for the Thayans Mulhorandi. It's a long process for something that seems like it should be a single step. |
| meto3010-17-07, 03:48 AM | I'm actually planning on using Arabic for Celestial... First I was planning to use Tengwar created by Tolkien, but I couldn't find a font that would allow me to type in Tengwar, so I'm using Arabic. The multitude of curves, lines, and dashes looked like a very good form of writing for celestial beings. Arabic written well looks sooo beautiful to me. |

| icuall10-17-07, 11:39 AM | You might want to google search Angelic font. Supposedly used since way back in biblical times and recorded/ discovered back in the 12th century. |
| KrisTheGreat10-18-07, 03:56 PM | what i have done in my world is the mulhorandi alphabet modern day they use the celestial alphabet but ancient is the hieroglyphics it works well for us. |
| Mean Eyed Cat10-20-07, 10:13 AM | This might be a good font to use: http://www.steliart.com/angelology_celestial_alphabet.html |
| Mean Eyed Cat10-23-07, 06:09 PM | Oh, and for what its worth, I made up a pdf document that has all the currently used alphabets in Faerun. It includes Thorass, Espruar, Dethek, Celestial, Infernal, Draconic, and Aquan (requires Adobe to open): FR Alphabets (http://mysite.verizon.net/restga8f/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderfiles/alphabets.pdf) I had to use the 2nd edition version of Thorass since I couldn't find the 3rd edition version online. Espruar and Dethek are the same alphabets found in the 3rd edition FRCS. Celestial is a combination of "Enochian" (for the alphabet) and "Miskatonic" for the numbers (I like how it made the little stars). Infernal is actually a font called "Drow Angular." Since the drow in FR use Espruar, I thought I would put this alphabet to good use as Infernal. And it looks cool. Draconic is actually "Cthulhu Runes." Since this alphabet is used far and wide in such places as Chult, Halruaa, Maztica & Shou Lung, I wanted to give it a completely exotic look. The Aquan alphabet is an actual font that I found online called "Aqua." Eventually I might include the dead alphabets Imaskari and Hamarfae (the alphabet used for elven high magic). |
