03-27-07, 05:30 PM -It's pretty cool. In it's most basic, basic, sense, Ravenloft is Horror D&D. Ravenloft is an evil demiplane that comes and goes, and is ruled by one Count Stradh Van Zorovich.

03-27-07, 06:39 PM It's ruled by Darklords, who are trapped in their own realms. There's a lot of dangerous fog there too, which can be quite dangerous, you don't want to get lost in it.

And Strahd doesn't rule Ravenloft, he just rules his wee province

I'd be curious how to integrate Ravenloft (which I loved back in 2nd Edition) into modern day 3.5 Faerun.

-Buy the 3.5e Sourcebook Ravenloft. The Demiplane of Dread is a Demiplane that randomly manifests (I think it is random, anyway) on other planes. So, all you need to do is have a character step into the mists to have them transported to Ravenloft. See Vampire of the Mists.

The demiplane angle is interesting in that it seems all campaign worlds (Greyhawk, Dragonlance, etc.) could have access to Ravenloft. And in doing so, could be a viable "bridging" mechanism for porting your characters from Faerun to say, Greyhawk if such versatile two-way (or multi-way) portals exist.

-Yes, yes they do. Jander Sunstar, a Faerūnian Vampire once stumbled into the Mists while Ravenloft was in Realmspace. Some time later, Lord Soth, a Blackguard from Dragonlance (I think. It could have been Greyhawk) was thrown into the Mists while Ravenloft was there as well.

03-28-07, 02:00 AM From what i understand though, you cant get out of Ravenloft once you go in, short of a Wish or epic magic.

Or am i mixing things up again.. maybe that was Athas, hmm.

The Dark Powers determine all with regard to such trans-planar concerns.

First, Lord Soth is a death knight (not just a simple blackguard) from Krynn. (He is/was THE death knight of Dragonlance - actually, some refer to him as the Dead Knight in mockery)

Second, I don't recall any 2nd edition material mentioning anyone from Greyhawk on Ravenloft, but there was more than one reference to the Realms (Nova Vaasa), Hazlik the red wizard, Valachan's ruler von Kharov, etc.) and some to Dragonlance (Sithicus/Lord Soth, etc.). Now in 3ed there are domains for Kas and Vecna on the Demiplane of Dread.

Third, it is stressed that characters shouldn't be able to leave Ravenloft sort of a campaign-ending epic/miraculous etc. event. After all, being on Ravenloft is somewhat a requirement for the campaign :)

Kas and Vecna, both from Grayhawk, were there in 2e. :)

Vecna managed to get out, or was let out, and Kas... good question. He might be dead given that his vestige can be called upon by Binders (though he might be an actual Vestige, as that might be the only way to contact his essence if he's still imprisoned in Ravenloft). In any event, Kas and Vecna's domains have vanished back into the Mists, but might conceivably survive as "islands" drifting somewhere distant from the core.

04-01-07, 02:29 PM How is good ol' Jander Sunstar these days? I've only found 1 book on him and only a few short stories with him in them as well and last I looked....well that was in Vampire of the Mists? Anyhow, just wondered if he ever made it back to Faerun.

However, the Mists of Ravenloft snatched him away before he could be burned, determined to keep him alive in his tortured existence. If you're looking for more about Sunstar, I suggest you pick up Children of the Night: Vampires for his latest mention. Jander also received some updated treatment in the 3e RL Champions of Darkness resource.

As for Jander returning to the Realms... That seems unlikely. Given the state of things in 3e RL and the fact that it was largely divorced from the connected relationship the setting enjoyed with other campaign settings during the days of 2e. Jander is staying put for the time being.
