Hello !

I'm starting to play a campaign in Faerun. It is the first time that we use this campaign setting and so we are all very new to it (and I'm the only one who read some part of the campaign settings book).
It is quite difficult for us to find the regions from where the player character comes from (where they are born). Maybe you can help us on that subject ?

Here is the party:
- Ronhkk: male half-orc barbarian, alignment: Neutral-Neutral
- Métilir D'arguaren: male elf warrior, alignment: chaotic-good
- Gwion Hachetonnerre: male dwarf priest of Moradin, alignment: lawfull-goof
- Annunfalma: male elf rogue, alignment: Chaotic-neutral

They don't really have a deity right now (that's also something I will need to help them with), except for the dwarf priest.

My players just followed the playerhandbook, so the elf and dwarf races are those that match with those in the PHB. Do you have some suggestions were these characters come from ? I will then read more in details those specific regions to see if that's ok.

I don't have the time to read completely the campaign setting book and to remember everything (that's the most difficult part) to help my players, so a list of suggestions will already reduce that :). I don't expect my players to read a lot of information about the subject neither, so I will do my best to help them.

Thanks for the help.

The North is always a good starting point, read the entries for the Silver Marches, Silverymoon , The Sword Coast , Ice Wind Dale and the related or get a hand on the regional sourcebook " Silver Marches

as for Gods, that is something that only your players can choose , just to little infos on how the will play

why have the elf warrior come all the way from evermeet when he could have come from silverymoon like the others.

and why does every dwarf have to come from mithril hall. our party's got a dwarf called wilgar pwent from mithril hall. and yes he is related (distantly)to the famous battle rager, which is exactly why wilgar has left the place. just to end up in everlund with an owl sat on his head, there's absolutely no dignity in life for some people.

the silver marches source book is a little difficult to get your hangs on at the moment as well.

i know this after an episode involving a glass of whisky 2 candles and a dogs tail. which has left what's left of mine difficult to read!

While the north is good alternatives do abound. perhaps the dwarf has been sent out by the dwarven temples in Waterdeep and the elves from the High Forest while the half orc is from the Nether mountains . Other alternatives could place them in the Dales with the dwarf from Daggerdale, the orc from Teshendale and the elves from Cormanthor

I like LK's ideas for the origin of the party members. The best bet you may have is to get a supplement focusing on that region to help you in this regard. The 3e Silver Marches might be a good first choice. Most of your characters could come from that region.

Half-Orc: North

Elf: Evermeet or whichever area Evereska is in, or Silver Marches

Dwarf: Great Rift if Gold, North if shield, or Deep Shantar

Elf 2: Similar to first one, but maybe this one can be in a more...shady environment.

I like LK's ideas for the origin of the party members.

-Because the OP asked for suggestions.

i concede your points but they're still cheesy.

personally i would have them all come from silverymoon, it's one of the few places it could be done.

then you dont have the problem of explaining how some one has managed to travel hundreds of miles and hook up with some people that they have no reason to know.

having just had to do this for an illuskan human cleric of tempus from the north, a dwarf fighter from mithril hall, an elf rogue from everlund and a human mage from silverymoon, i was hoping to see a bit more originality from the people who had come through the realms since the early days.

Half Orc - Beorunna's Well: The City of the retired Black Lion Tribe.

Elf Warrior- Everlund: A much harsher city then Silverymoon, yet a close ally.

Dwarf - Citadel Adbar: Because captaincarot was complaining about Mithral Hall, and the dwarves their are way hardcore.

Elf Rogue - Amn: Just to add some variety, and everyone knows the best rogues are from the Shadow Thieves Guild. :w00t:

Alediran's suggestions for gods was pretty good, except the Elf Rogue would get so much more for worshipping Mask then the fey trickster :pbbbtt: . Mask is a great diety that rewards you for stealing, what more could any rogue ask for :dancin: .

Thanks to everybody for your nice suggestions. I will take a closer look at the different locations you mentioned.
For the elf warrior, I was thinking of pointing the High Forest to my player, it correspond quite good with its background: he lives in a small elf community in a forest. A big part of the city has been destroyed by orcs with the help of a traitor which lead them to the city.

Thanks again for all the replies, it helped me a lot to guide my players for their native places.

There's just for one player that we don't see clearly from where he can come on basis of his background. Maybe you can help me.

The PC is an moon elf rogue. His background is basically this: he grew in a small elf community in a forest close to mountains. In these mountains live a dwarf tribe. This tribe was in war against orcs (or something else) and at one point their main city was assaulted. Seeing that they started loosing the battle, the dwarf leader sent messengers to the elves asking for help. The elves joigned forces with the dwarf and destroyed the orcs with the dwarves. The dwarf leader opened the gate of the city for these elves and allowed all elves from this forest to consider the town as theirs.
This elf community are followers of Angharradh and the PC simply helps to prepare the different cults. He discovered a passion to discover secret places and when he was seing a closed chest, he couldn't resist but had to open it. He once committed a big mistake: he stole jewelery from the community and was judged for that. The community banned him for this and now, he tries to get back the trust of his people. He wander a little bit everywhere waiting for an occasion to prove himself.

Any idea where he can come from ?
Thanks a lot.

I'm not sure their is any place that describes that exact background in the realms, however Mithral Hall is really close to the Moonwoods which is close to mountains. The Moonwoods have Elven villages and such. You could easily make that your location. Also the Lurkwoods are even closer to Mithral Hall. Look in the FRCS to see if either of these locations suits your players wants. Many other places are available. Cormanthor is close to Thunder Peaks, but you will have to read the book to see if there are any Dwarven communities in the Thunder Peaks. The Races of Faerun and the Players Guide to Faerun will probably help greatly, because there are probably many places that the rogue could be from.

Good Luck

The rogue is definitively a calm follower of Erevan more than anything else (I see my eye for character options is as sharp as the first day), they have a guild of Wizard/Rogues dedicated to discover and retrieve lost elven artifacts and he fits this (my girlfriend's character is a bard/rogue/arcane trickster of Erevan Illesere and the guild is becoming interested in recruiting her).

As for the location of his comunity, it sounds very much like Cormanthyr during it's greatest time. It could be a remaining town in a remote location that was never destroyed by the Army of Darkness.
