I am trying to write a story about a vampire who teams up with a shade and a drow. The only problem is I don't know what their villian should be. Or if not a villian I can't really think what a vampire would want from the world that would hard for him to get.

Well, if all your characters are non-good-/evil-aligned (which sounds the case; not sure), maybe have a good-aligned NPC be the villain, maybe a powerful anti-undead character who seeks the destruction of undead abominations throughout their sphere of influence.

For instance, maybe it could be a high-level paladin or cleric of Kelemvor or Lathander? Just an idea.

As far as the vampire's goal, maybe it's carving a niche for itself so that it can stop being hunted by whatever you can think of that's hunting it? Maybe its people of origin hate it, maybe it aggrivated some local creatures to be point of being hunted, etc. Maybe make such case stem from the magnitude of the vampire's behavior to where it was a nasty scourge that must be destroyed, before it causes any more havoc if it ever came back.

That's all I can think of.

I would have to assume your characters are evil and therefore, would be the targets of good aligned churches such as Lathander, Selune (assuming the shade worships Shar), or Kelemvor for the undead aspect. The Seldarine worshipers would also be good choices as perhaps the Sun Soul monks. The Harpers and Moonstars might be enemies or perhaps may be interested in recruiting some non-good double agents.

Well, it does not have to be good aligned opposition....

Depending on their personalities, goals, region, it could be a number of different things...

so...what are their goals, where are they located...what are the characters like?

Vampire motives:

-Getting cured.
-Getting power.
-Getting good slaves to his power.
-Getting revenge for some mortal vendetta he never got to complete.
-Escaping some previous organisation he belonged to.

Shade motives:

-Getting power.
-Getting good slaves to his power.
-Getting revenge for some mortal vendetta he never got to complete.
-Escaping some previous organisation he belonged to.

Drow movites:
-Getting certain things needed to return home and gain power over its house.
-Getting power.
-Getting good slaves to his power.
-Getting revenge for some mortal vendetta he never got to complete.
-Escaping some previous organisation he belonged to.

The vampire was cursed by Myrkul some three hundred years ago, that is why he is a vampire. Besides vengence against Myrkul he wants to overcome his weakness to the gods, sunlight, ect. He also wants to have a kingdom set up in the Spine of the World. He greatly hates the Archdevils for something that was promised to him.
The human starts out as a thief who has yet to decide to worship Shar or Mask so she wears the holy symbols of both. Somehow she will end of on the Plane of Shadow and become a shade. I have yet to decide what her goals are.
The drow is going to be an albino living rather in the Moonwood or Silverymoon gathering info on the surface elves. She was been trained as an assassin. She wants to return to Menzo.

The Vampire could possibly want to deal with the crown of horns, the artifact that Mrykrul possesses, or harness his power somehow. In order to overcome his weaknesses he could be on an avid quest to achieve the template Vampire Lord , a powerful vampire that hardly has the drawbacks of others (can exist in sunlight, can cross running water, etc) As for the archdevils, maybe he could be exploring someway to find an upperhand to however wronged him.

Perhaps the human eventually delves into magic, tapping into the shadow weave. He makes a mistake, and it combines with his essence.

If the drow is simply content on completeing her surface mission, that is her goals.

It definatly seems as though the vampire will be the major character in this story, and the others will mainly be along for the ride.

Thanks for the ideas, they will be very helpful. You are right that the vampire will be the major character. I didn't even think about the Crown of Thorns, he could be searching for it and attacking anyone who is still loyal to Mrykul. I know that even when a vampire reaches the vampire lord level he still has some weaknesses, so maybe he will being trying to overcome those as well. That is good about the human too, maybe she tried to use her first spell and by mistake she used a shadow spell and the essence got sucked into her.

If your thief becomes a shade by accident and isn't of netherese descent and aligned with the City of Shade, there is a good chance the Princes of Shade would decide to hunt her down just to make sure fewer people know about their abilities.

The Red Wizards of Thay are offering huge rewards on information on shades. They would be estatic over the chance to capture and experiment on one.

That would be a great idea to add. The thief could have both red wizards and shades or people from the City of Shades after her. This could work out good because I think that the vampire will be hunting or hunted rather a lich or maybe another vampire lord. I figure that the drow will be the only one that is not getting hunted, rather she will be doing the hunting by killing as many elves as she can while not being noticed.
By being together they will have many enemies, this will put a vampire lord against the City of Shades. Maybe if some of the Princes of Shade survive the Twilight War then they will go against a vampire lord.
It would also be interested to see how a vampire lord and shade go against some Red Wizards.

I say the three of them sit down at a night cafe and drink blood coffee and recite morose, melancholy poetry to one another. :D
