Hello, I am currently writing a book centered around Drow characters (Purely for my own recreation) and I need info on certain places and characters. I have been out of the D&D scene for quite some time and I believe the resources I have are dated. Before it is asked I have the Menzo boxed set, Guide to the under dark, and have read some of the novels but have inadvertently misplaced a few. I know some of the information I require maybe spoilers for some of you folks who haven't read the books, if that is the case and if it is allowed I would ask that you e-mail me your response. I'm not sure if I can post my e-mail (I'm new to forums too) but I'm sure someone out there can direct me in what to do. Anyway I have listed below what charaters I need info on.

Rai'guy Bondalek - read SOTS but can't remember what class he was. And did it mention he was from Ched Nasad?

Bergynion - Did he survive SOTS? and would he be considered a second in charge of Bregan D'aerthe?

Kimmuriel Oblodra - If I remember right wasn't he a Psionist and now leader of Bregan D'aerthe? Please confirm.

Aunrae & lldibane Nasadra -What is this spider bloodpact they made?

Bregan D'aerthe -Does their influence extend to other Drow cities such as Ched Nasad?

Ched Nasad - It is written in one of my resouce materials that the Chitines were created there, can anyone confirm this or have more details?

Rai'guy Bondalek - Dead, but he was a Wiz/Clr

Bergynion - Dead by Entreri

Kimmuriel Oblodra - Head of Bregan D'aerthe now (though still answers to Jarlaxle.)

Bregan D'aerthe - Base of opperations is still within Menzo, but given they obviously have many dealings with surrounding, and even distant contacts/ Cities, They may hold influence there aswell.

Ched Nasad (chitines) - I believe this is correct, but I don't have time to check for you at the moment, sorry. :(

Underdark pg 7Also Monsters of Faerun, pg.26

Bregan D'aerthe currently has a large army in Menzoberranzan, another large army beneath Calimshan, have a secondary force stationed in the citadel at the Dalabad Oasis (which they now control), have several smaller independent outposts throughout the Underdark including in Blindingstone, and have representatives of their organization in every major Underdark city, even the non-drow ones. In the WotSQ, Valas Hune obviously knows his way around the entire Underdark and has connections everywhere, including amongst Vhaerun worshippers. Considering he's not even an officer in Bregan D'aerthe, just a scout, its pretty obvious that the organization is FAR more powerful and well-connected then anyone realizes.

Jarlaxle's the MAN. :D

What do you consider "large"? By info of the Menzoberranzan box - and we have no reason to assume that there has been any major influx, despite The Silence - the Bregan D'aerthe number some 150 drow, over 100 of which are males.

Thank you very much for your time and effort. The novels I owned have been lent out and some have been lost during a move so I no longer have them for refference.

-I asked this a while ago. Eric Boyd, who wrote Drizzt Do'Urden's Guide to the Underdark, mentioned that he wrote the book so long ago, he completely forgot what he had in mind for the pact.

I agree there's more to this group than meets the eye, its a shame none of the novels have done more about them. They do have a racket that would make the mafia envious, Spying, mercenary, assassinations, and I wouldn't be suprised if they weren't into more traditional organized crime operations such as smuggling, selling illegal substances, etc.

-I think the key idea that is not taken into consideration is sympathizers. There may be only 150 or so actual members, but there might be a lot of other Drow out there who can sympathize with the Bregan D'aerthe, and might go out of their way to "aid" them every now and then, so long as it benefits the individual. You know what I mean? The Germans who were Jewhunters in WWII Germany didn't necessarily belong to the Nazi party- though, I am sure, many did- but they still aided the Nazi cause, because it benefitted them.

I was afraid it would be something like that but at least it leaves it open for interpretation. I have an Idea but before I use it I'd like to bounce it off you to see if I am on the mark here. Getting another opinion opens up new Ideas.
I see the pact as something done to gain life long support from both parties involved and done before Lolth or in her name so neither party could renege on the deal because they would suffer dire consequences. The pledge witnessed by Lolth would insure the normally backstabbing Drow would uphold their pact. I could use some help on the intricacies of the ceremony.

-Well, the ceremony obviously bonds the two together. I've always thought of it as something similar to what you were thinking- something where the two pledged to support each other's endeavors. I, myself, always thought of it as something a little more than that. Besides for just pledging their support, it also bonds their lives together. So, for instance, if once is killed, the other is killed. If one gains a negative level, the other gains one- something like that.

-As for the details...Never thought it too much, but I prepose that the two cut their wrists open, and allow a small spider to wiggle around in their wound, licking up their blood and what not. Then, they take out the spider, and switch them, placing them back in their wounds. They then squish them, causing the blood from one sibling to go into the other. The only real problem is that Lolth doesn't like spiders being squished. Maybe she'd make an exception.

What do you consider "large"? By info of the Menzoberranzan box - and we have no reason to assume that there has been any major influx, despite The Silence - the Bregan D'aerthe number some 150 drow, over 100 of which are males.I consider the information in the box set both outdated, and initially incorrect. Those were either the troops kept within the city at any one time, or that was all that Jarlaxle allowed Yvonnel Baenre to know about. It was stated in the novels that Jarlaxle used a large army (1000) of Drow to infiltrate Calimport, along with about 3000(?) Kobolds that later escaped into the tunnels. After taking Dalabad oasis, it is stated that he moved in EVEN MORE troups into the area. Then you have the fact that, at the same time, Triel is using an 'army' of Bregan D'aerthe mercenaries to hold off the Duergar and Kaanyr Vhok, something I don't think 100-150 Drow can do. Not only does all this lend itself to misdirection on Jarlaxle's part (something VERY in-character), but we find throughout the stories that their are many members from other cities, especially from Ched Nassad. That would require some sort of recruiting agents spread throughout the underdark, and we see that Valas Hune obviously knows his way around places very far from Menzoberranzan and is well connected, and he is merely a scout. I would think that now, with the WotSQ disrupting so many cities, his numbers have swelled and he probably could take on a city easily enough with his organization. I'm sure his lieutenants are already making overtures within fallen Ched Nassad, considering that they have had dealings with the city many times in the past.

I think the 100-150 number meant the officers, the 'real' Bregan D'aerthe, not the grunts who make up most of his forces. I haven't read RotP yet, but at the end of PotWK he tells Kimmuriel that he may have to take down the Paladin King of Damara. That alone tells you he is an INCREDIBLY powerful individual, both personally and with his group behind him.

You need to read between the lines, the hints are all there. Even when his charater was first introduced to us, it was hinted at that Jarlaxle kept many secrets form Matron Baenre, which really means he kept secrets from Menzoberranzan.

Even Driizt was of NO consequence to Jarlaxle, that should tell you something.

IIRC, Jarlaxle said something about not wanting to fight drizz't because he knew that he'd loose, plus knew that that drizz't was a better swordsman than zaknafein, and that zak could beat him.

i think thats what happened, but the mechanical DND side of thing and the literary side of things are often compleatly at odds with each other.

Jarlaxle had nothing to gain by fighting Driizt, and much to lose. Not fighting him was perfectly in character, and if he needed him dead for any reason Driizt would be toast. The way Jar is written in his own books, his magic should MORE then make up for whatever he is lacking in swordsmanship. Also, Jar is no slouch, as evident in his few melee-only encounters. He is an excellent swordsman, and a very good wizard, AND is blessed by Lolth! He could even be her Chosen, for all we know. The more we learn about our Dark Elf friend, the less we realize we really know.

I picture Jarlaxe being everything that made the Miyeritar great... pure ambition and a natural talent to exceed at anything he puts his mind to, especially when dealing with magic and magical devices. He is a true Dark Elf, only his skin makes him Drow. Driizt on the other hand represents the Illythirii ideal - A pure, unadulterated meld of mind and body, a near feral instinct and cunning that allows him to overcome opponents even after you are sure he is beat. Like Jar, he can reach deep down into himself and pull out reserves even he didn't know were there.

Ahhh... to see the Dark Elven people, in all their glory, walk once again on the face of the world and take their place in the sun. :angelhide

No disrespect, but IMHO you consider far too much official material to be incorrect or outdated, don't you?

The drow cities as such have been downsized considerably in 3E (losing 1/3 up to 1/2 of its drow population) and I for one cannot see any reason to buff the membership numbers etc. of that mercenary gang "just because" they are so notorious. What should be kept in mind that most members of this gang are well trained ex-members of vanquished / destroyed houses and are thus as "characters"* a force to be reckoned with. Added to this are the ties the gang has to various powerful Houses and clans. Combine that ... and compare it to the average drow house or surface thieves' guild or mercenary company and you get "a picture" more like it. And, BTW, I speak of existing in-setting guilds and gangs, not homebrew stuff (as the latter usually tends to be far more powerful than what you find in the lorebooks).

*Most likely between level 5 to 15. Compare that to what is mentioned to be "elite" in the NPC lists and then think of the number 150.

I believe you both could be right. The box set I believe is reffering to the number of members stationed in Menzo itself. Which is a smart thing to do, too many members in one city and the matron mothers/ruling body would see you as a threat and do whatever they could to eliminate you. I can see 50 to 100 stationed in each Drow city then bands of 10-20 stationed in outposts scattered throughout the underdark. With these numbers you could have a membership of up to 500-1500, which would be a large number for the Underdark considering it's not as populated as the surface. It depends on just how much territory is actually under their influence. And don't forget Lord Karsus's comment about sympathizers, I can see Bregan D'aerthe using/controlling others such as various guilds and gang members to do their dirty work. I do agree that there would have to be more than 150 total to cover/control as much territory as whats been described. Unfortunately we will never know their exact numbers for sure until the novel writers/game makers shed more light on the subject. So far the group has been used as a side plot and no one has done an indepth story on the inner workings of the famed band itself. Everyone will have an opinion on this and I have no doubt there will be great ideas on building a workable number of members.

while i agree with the statement that jarlaxle could easyly have drizzt torn to pieces, i believe that niether would win a one on one battle if such an event were to unfold. i think that what you said about nothing to gain and much too loose was correct, but was more like nothing to gain, and EVERYTHING to loose. what does jarlaxle value above his own skin?

i do think that there should be more of a relationship between jarlaxle and drizzt, but thats neither here nor there.

IMHO: One Drow People Under Jarlaxle. :D

With all due respect, I doubt that the mercenary gang is that strong or powerful as it is portrayed on here or in the books. It has its place, it is notorius and has a number of influental and powerful characters as well as some not-to-be-underestimated allies. But the popularity it receives on here comes from a source that also shed much popularity on a single drow character who is utterly a-typical of drow society. Which does nothing to stop his popularity and creates a well documented misconception on the drow of Faerūn too.

IMHO ... Menzoberranzan is known to be a very warlike drow city, one not to be meddled with. The Bregan D'aerte are a mercenary gang well established in this city, who often deals with the rest of Faerūn on behalf of Menzoberranzan. That's the reason why they offer scout services, as they did with Valas Hune. Obviously, they have acquired a name for themselves, but do remember that trading in the Underdark is very limited, i.e. special places or a selected number of cities. Thus, being (in-)famous down there does not necessarily relate to numbers or power as much as it would on the surface. Just MHO, of course.

And also if memory serves me correctly Jarlaxle ley Drizzt go i think at one point didnt he? Jarlaxle is smart, clever, and kinda cute haha. Also Jarlaxle has this little habit of taking over other orginizations and telling them they are under him.

*SPOILERS OF RotP**

He took over the citadel of assassins and then let Dragonbane attack the city after they animated the castle. afterwards making the leader of the citadel work for him furthering Bregan's influence.

Maybe just maybe their really is 150 Bregan mercs but he has so many other factions that work for them it boosts their numbers and influence. IMHO that is. Oh and just for another spoiler it is hinted he is going to return to Menzo and Entreri returns to his home village alone :(

I agree that some tend to make this group more powerful than it should and I would agree to the set number of 150 stated in the Boxed set if the group was only a mercenary band but in the books they are depicted as delving into other areas such as procurers of intelligence. And it is the novels that the game makers use to write the resource material. Or should use since it's the novels that are giving us a view into the world of Faerun. Now I know not all the writers involved have first hand experience with some of the subjects they write about but I am a retired military man and have had the priviledge of studing battle tactics from the ancient chinese to Stonewall Jackson. My job was to help plan the battles/engagements using intelligence gathered. From this background I can tell you that 150 would not be enough to accomplish what they do. I also like to compare things in Faerun to their counter parts in real life. And yes I know this is fantasy but the closer things are to what we are familiar with in real life make a story more believable. I like to associate Bregan D'aerthe to some of the real life gangs. For instance it's estimated that the mafia has 1700 family members but this doesn't take in the Sgarrista or soldiers that work for them whose numbers run into the hundreds of thousands. Or you could use the hells angels which are estimated at 2500 patched members but there again the FBI estimates that the unpatched hangers on and other gangs that work for them could run up to as high as a 200,000. Now I know the underdark doesn't hold the population that the USA does (almost 300 million as of 2006) but based on the numbers above and what the band does, 1500 members in Bregan D'aerthe would be good estimate.

Zanan - as an obvious fellow lover all things both dark and Elven, I will try to make myself a little clearer. Others on here have gotten the 'jist' of what I meant.

Basically, you have you're 150 Bregan D'aerthe. These are the leaders, like in the mafia example above. These are the 'made' guys, so to speak. They answer directly to Jarlaxle, or to another lieutenent at Jarlaxle's direction. There are hundreds, possibly THOUSANDS of soldiers under him that Jarlaxle has never met. Every Drow City has it's 'Underworld' (no pun intended), and I'm fairly certain Jar has his grubby little fingers in most of the pots. He was able to quickly gather an army of 1000 under him to take over Calimport's thieves guilds, along with a few thousand Kobolds. Now, he might have called in a few favors from noble houses from menzo or elsewhere, but the point is ALL those troops answered ultimately to Jar. He now controls all of Calimports thieves guilds, something not a single human has been able to do. He controls the surface realm of Dalabad Oasis, and even if only a handful of those troops are TRUE Bregan D'aerthe, they still all answer to Jarlaxle. I haven't read RotP, but from the above 'spoiler' I see he now controls the assassins and thieves of Vassa/damara as well. Like Calimports guilds, they ARE NOT Bregan D'aerthe, but they still answer to them.

In my recent research into the Dark Elves for the Elven Netbook articles, I've been coming across little bits and pieces of lore, a good deal a which has to do with Jar and company. They appear to be everywhere, so even if there are only 150 TRUE Bregan D'aerthe, there are THOUSANDS upon thousands of subordinates under them. I wouldn't be surprised if half the surface thieves/assassins guilds answer to him; he's like the Kingpin!

And thus far, we've only seen mostly Drow members, but there was one Illithid, and that group of Kobolds, so lord knows how many non-drow Underdark types answer to him?

Just my take, do with it what you will.
Zanan

02-25-07, 04:39 AM
These 150 chaps are IMHO no leaders. If you look at the numbers of an average drow house, even when numbers were greater than they are now, they had about a dozen drow who could be considered leaders, about thrice as much sub-commanders (i.e. captains of the guard et al) and the rest was foot soldiers. If a source speaks of 150 members, it is 150 members in total. My take is that they hire scouts out at a ration one to three per order, as well as hiring elite strike forces (mercenaries they are, no mafia-style company) out with about a dozen to 30odd drow per order. That is much, even by drow army standards. For, as has been said, most of the BD's are elite folk with quite a number of levels more than the House footsoldiers around them. Hence they are pretty respected by others and hence they can be quite devastating if they switch allegiances. But if you want to be absolutely certain, just ask Ed, or Eric, or even Mr. Salvatore over at Candlekeep.

Re: Calimport ... the Calimshani have quite a respect for drow, not just because they are "drow" or because they are Bregan D'aerthe, but because of a war that caused quite a bit of havoc and destruction to Calimshan and Calimport in particular in the not too distant past.

If one goes solely by the perceptions given in the novels, then one would think Menzo and Ched Nasad were the only significant Drow cities, and that (as Zanan has pointed out many times) they are almost all fanatical Lolth-worshippers...

One has to take everything in stride.

If one goes solely by the perceptions given in the novels, then one would think Menzo and Ched Nasad were the only significant Drow cities, and that (as Zanan has pointed out many times) they are almost all fanatical Lolth-worshippers...

One has to take everything in stride.

-If one went solely by the novels, half of the Realms would not exist.

Actually, I still think the vast majority of the drow are Lolth-worshippers, and they can be rather dedicated to her - even if it's for purely instrumental purposes. I suppose the other deities might have their small cults, but from what I understand they combined would hardly make more than 10% in most cities. Isn't it so?

Lolth is the official patron deity of the race, after all. While not every city is necessarily as fanatical about is as Menzo (or as structured, albeit chaotically), I'd say the vast majority of Drow do worship her/accept her as their patron goddess. While I can understand worship of Vhaerun is on an upswing in recent years (and Eilistraee has always had her own little niche), I've always been of the impression Lolth's got the lion's share of Drow souls.

Yet strangely, Menzo is actually one of the smallest Drow cities...

Aye. Tenacious, vicious, warlike, and in general mad, bad and dangerous to know (well, that was said of Byron, but anyway). Size does not always matter, just look at an angry wolverine (the animal, just in case).

-The mutant is just as much tenacious, vicious, warlike, and in general mad, bad and dangerous as his namesake. ;)
