| Hanali-in-Love12-06-07, 09:16 PM | I'm wondering if anyone can tell me what Wilderness forest has the highest concentration of Fey beings? I'm looking for powerful fey and communities of fey. I was thinking possibly the Laughing Hollow? |
| Stigger12-07-07, 02:31 AM | From what I remember of it, either the High Forest or the Neverwinter Woods would probably qualify for that... Neverwinter Woods moreso I thought from what I recall of the descriptions. |
| Hanali-in-Love12-07-07, 03:09 AM | From what I remember of it, either the High Forest or the Neverwinter Woods would probably qualify for that... Neverwinter Woods moreso I thought from what I recall of the descriptions. The description in the FrCs says nothing about fey in Neverwinter. I've noticed in all my many years of playing in forgotten realms that there is basically no fey community at all whatsoever in Faerun. Bullocks! |
| Stigger12-07-07, 06:41 AM | Was going by their description in The North boxed set actually, now that I look it up, which should be available off of the WotC older edition download site. Doesn't say fey specifically, but that was the impression I was left with overall. |
| Alediran12-07-07, 08:21 AM | Rashemen has a big concentration of nature spirits and other things. The telthor spirits could be considered fey. |
| Suin Bahhar12-07-07, 08:29 AM | Fey communities are most of the time obscured by at least a illusionary landscape or a mirage arcana so their presence might go unnoticed by the unknowing. Crossroads waypoints sometimes make paths to the spiritplane of Fearie possible were most Fey retreated to after the LeShay or the fey creator race prime era in the realms (some 20000 years ago if I'm not mistaken). So most of the Fey communitities have migrated and are located on Fearie. As Stigger said Neverwinter Wood, the High Forest can hold significant numbers of seasonlinked fearies. The Yuirwood, the Duskwood and most old elven forests should be able to hold several smaller communities of Nixies, Pixies and Sprites. |
| Iakhovas12-07-07, 09:35 AM | Suin Bahhar is spot on, but I'll add one more to the list: The Moonshaes, particuarly on the isle of Gwynneth in and around Myrloch Vale. |
| Hanali-in-Love12-07-07, 01:24 PM | It's just a shame that with all the races and deities in the realms that there is hardly any fey or relation to the Seelie court. |
| Lord Karsus12-07-07, 01:29 PM | -What was it...Unicorn Run? -And, if you want to be technical, Elves could be considered Fey creatures, depending on what you want to define 'Fey'. |
| Rinonalyrna Fathomlin12-07-07, 01:56 PM | The description in the FrCs says nothing about fey in Neverwinter. I've noticed in all my many years of playing in forgotten realms that there is basically no fey community at all whatsoever in Faerun. Bullocks! The FRCS doesn't tell you everything (if fact, neither does any other sourcebook). It's fair to imagine fey communities in most forests--just because they aren't mentioned in the FRCS doesn't mean they don't exist. |
| Lord Karsus12-07-07, 02:05 PM | -Heh, Fey communities do their best to make sure that they are not mentioned. |
| Rinonalyrna Fathomlin12-07-07, 04:09 PM | -Heh, Fey communities do their best to make sure that they are not mentioned. Indeed--in that sense the FRCS is actually quite realistic.:) |
| Green Elven Vampire12-07-07, 04:36 PM | I believe book 2 In Sylvan Shadows of The Cleric Quintet had a Dryad in it, and that took place in the forest of Shilmista. Though it never mentioned if those elves were Moon, Gold or what. I'd assume Moon elves. So Dryads are in Shilmista. |
| Lord Karsus12-07-07, 05:12 PM | Though it never mentioned if those elves were Moon, Gold or what. I'd assume Moon elves. -A combination of Moon Elves and Wood Elves, as some of the Elves featured had the characteristics of Moon Elves, and other had traditional Wood Elven characteristics. |
| Green Elven Vampire12-08-07, 01:08 AM | I'd say the Winterwood, The Laughing Hollow, The Ardeep forest, The High Forest, Kryptgarden forest and The Forgotten forest all would have a fairly high concentration of Fey in a surrounding community. |
| Dark Wizard12-08-07, 01:52 AM | Isn't Chondalwood also known as the Satyr Wood? |
| Stigger12-08-07, 02:46 AM | Last I checked it was. |
| Hanali-in-Love12-08-07, 03:23 AM | Isn't shilmista forest vacant? There is not even an entry for it in the FrCs, which I found odd. |
| Zanan12-08-07, 04:22 AM | Have a look at the Border Forest (FRCS, p. 127) east of Anauroch. It is said to be home to various sort of fey. Having said that, methinks that many fey entered the Realms' "monster catalogue" rather lateish, so no wonder there ain't any large fey community, if you'd call it "community" at all. |
| Fingoldfin12-08-07, 08:21 PM | -What was it...Unicorn Run? -And, if you want to be technical, Elves could be considered Fey creatures, depending on what you want to define 'Fey'. Unicorn Run is in the Star Mountains in High Forest. It does have a community of fey and ahh... unicorns. The largest concentration of fey in High Forest is around the Lost Peaks in the north western part of the forest. In addition to a large fey community it is also home to a large tribe of centaurs. Satyrs and pixies are the most common fey in the area. In my game I created something known to fey in the High Forest as the Pixie Tree. It is an ancient oak tree more than 15ft wide located east of the Lost Peaks. It's home to at least 100 pixies, grigs, and pedals (mm3). The size of the community tends to fluctuate do to the capricious nature of fey. The tree has been shaped by magic over the centuries to provide numerous holes for the pixies to hide in. All non-evil fey within 500ft of the Pixie Tree are always under the effect of barkskin (+2) and protection from evil. All evil creatures within 500ft of the Pixie Tree are under the effect of faerie fire spell (no SR). I created a few colorful "protectors" of the Pixie Tree. I'll list them below. They protect the tree by playing practical jokes (harmless for good PCs and harmful for evil PCs) on non-fey that come too close to the tree. If they talk to the players Nix and Blipophilious do most of the talking. They always give themselves and their companions long-winded royal-sounding titles. A good example is "Lord Nix, Hero of the High Forest, Archmage of Unicorn Run, and Savior of Turlang the Treant." Their titles always change from sentence to sentence. Nix Brighteyes pixie sorcerer level 5 Twix Brighteyes pixie Druid level 4 Chrip grig ranger level 4 Blipophilious faerie dragon (as many hit dice as you want) Let me know what you think about the Pixie Tree. I've had a lot of fun with it in my game. :) |
| Rinonalyrna Fathomlin12-08-07, 08:48 PM | Isn't shilmista forest vacant? There is not even an entry for it in the FrCs, which I found odd. In my opinion no forest should be "vacant". I'd like to mention the Reaching Woods, if no one mentioned it before.:) |
| Rinonalyrna Fathomlin12-08-07, 08:49 PM | Let me know what you think about the Pixie Tree. I've had a lot of fun with it in my game. :) I think it's very cute, and I'd love something like that in my Realms.:) |
| Green Elven Vampire12-08-07, 11:12 PM | Ahhh yes, The Border forest! If I remember right, it has the most mention of Fey in all the FrCs. I would LOVE to see a group of roguish Quicklings with various class combos all beginning with rogue. A Quickling Rogue/ Wizard/ Uncanny Trickster would be a serious opponent for even high level PC's. |
| Vulpes12-09-07, 01:17 AM | I just sort of scanned through it, so I may be incorrect, but the recent Shadowdale adventure makes it sound like there is now a large fey community in the woods around the dale. |
| MarkusTay6312-09-07, 03:26 AM | There are large communities of Fey in the Ama-Basin region of northern Kara-Tur, shown as the Pazruki Forest in the map that came in issue #349 of Dragon Magazine. In fact, one large community of Pixies was detailed in The Horde boxed set (Panjuis), but that Tree-fort has since been taken over by Bakemona (Oriental-style goblins). If you can look it up, it gives a very good description of a typical Torillian Pixie/Sprite dwelling. |
| Suin Bahhar12-09-07, 10:49 AM | Could a fey community muster enough strength to oust an neighbouring country? Fey wars has a nice ring to it. Crusading armor clad nixies or swarms of sprites descending from the sky like locusts. Somehow I doubt they would wage wars on the material plane of Fearun. |
| Fingoldfin12-09-07, 11:33 AM | Ahhh yes, The Border forest! I'm gonna use this because it's just cruel. :evillaugh Does anyone know where I can find Quickling stats for 3.5e? |
| Iakhovas12-09-07, 11:49 AM | Ah yes, Vulpes is absolutely correct. There is quite a large fey population in and around Shadowdale now thanks to Azalar Falconhand, the new Lord of Shadowdale. I just sort of scanned through it, so I may be incorrect, but the recent Shadowdale adventure makes it sound like there is now a large fey community in the woods around the dale. |
| Alediran12-10-07, 08:44 AM | Ah yes, Vulpes is absolutely correct. There is quite a large fey population in and around Shadowdale now thanks to Azalar Falconhand, the new Lord of Shadowdale. What happened to Lord Mourngrim Amcathra? |
| Rinonalyrna Fathomlin12-10-07, 11:00 AM | What happened to Lord Mourngrim Amcathra? Depends on how you play through the module (you can reinstate him, in fact), but the official ending is that, with great sadness over all that happened in the module, he stepped down. |
| Lord Karsus12-10-07, 11:02 AM | -Well, that's nice. I figured he was dead. |
| Rinonalyrna Fathomlin12-10-07, 11:12 AM | -Well, that's nice. I figured he was dead. From what I recall, he's still alive.:) It is nice, but I still can't say I love all the plot developments in that module, or the fact that the module is so heavy-handed about what happens "officially". Also, I think one of the designers (Eric L. Boyd?) said all these modules can be run at any time without being explicitly tied to the official timeline...but they are heavily tied in with the timeline (at least Shadowdale is). |
| Hanali-in-Love12-13-07, 06:30 PM | How did a large population of Fey spring up in Cormanthyr? What kind of fey? |
| Alediran12-13-07, 06:43 PM | How did a large population of Fey spring up in Cormanthyr? What kind of fey? During Myth Drannor's time there was a large population of Satyrs. |
| Hanali-in-Love12-13-07, 06:52 PM | During Myth Drannor's time there was a large population of Satyrs. But Satyrs don't count as a large population of fey. |
| Lord Karsus12-13-07, 07:19 PM | But Satyrs don't count as a large population of fey. -Sylvan and Fey are virtually synonymous. Thus, if a Satyr is a Sylvan creature, it could also be considered a Fey creature, in many circles. |
| Stigger12-13-07, 08:18 PM | Funny, I consider them very different things, but then I very much come from a C:tD perspective rather than a D&D one. |
| Lord Karsus12-13-07, 08:32 PM | -Well, to be more specific, Sylvan creatures are more "woodsy", whereas Fey creatures are more "otherworldly". However, Sylvan creatures are often "otherworldly", and Fey creatures are often "woodsy". |
| Stigger12-14-07, 12:12 AM | Hmmm... guess I do use those definitions actually. I usually equate Fae with more 'power' though. |
| Vulpes12-15-07, 01:26 AM | How did a large population of Fey spring up in Cormanthyr? What kind of fey? Again, I didn't read the module in depth, so I'm sure someone else could explain it better and in more detail, but apparently when Azalar Falconhand was trying to free Shadowdale, he allied with the fey and opened a bunch of backwoods crossroads gates that let in a whole bunch of fey. |
| Mr_Miscellany12-15-07, 01:51 AM | Magic of Faerūn (page 45-46) lists nine fey-guarded crossroads that exist in Faerūn. Whether any of these locations is next to/near a largish fey community is of course up to the DM. |
| Stigger12-15-07, 02:33 AM | Pretty sure the Waterdeep one isn't a sizeable fae community... :D |
| sfdragon12-15-07, 05:04 AM | it just says large fey numbers at the end of shadowdale, nothing on the type. imo this would mean nymphs, satyrs, few others. dryads on the otherhand require their tree so i doubt them. |
| Suin Bahhar12-15-07, 07:22 AM | You mean dryads cant bond to a new tree or that Shadowdale has no trees left? |
| Hanali-in-Love12-15-07, 12:18 PM | You mean dryads cant bond to a new tree or that Shadowdale has no trees left? I played a Dryad in a campaign two years ago and my DM got around the tree thing by allowing my character to carry several pieces of bark from my tree on my person. If those pieces of bark were removed more than 100 yards from my person, then I would begin to get sick and eventually die within a week if not brought back to my tree. |
| Lord Karsus12-15-07, 01:36 PM | You mean dryads cant bond to a new tree or that Shadowdale has no trees left? -Are you just being silly, or did that module actually do that to Shadowdale, a la Razing of the Shire? |
| Hanali-in-Love12-15-07, 02:20 PM | Razing of the Shire? Scouring of the Shire perhaps? :D |
| Rinonalyrna Fathomlin12-15-07, 05:58 PM | -Are you just being silly, or did that module actually do that to Shadowdale, a la Razing of the Shire? Not that I recall! |
| Suin Bahhar12-15-07, 06:14 PM | -Are you just being silly, or did that module actually do that to Shadowdale, a la Razing of the Shire?Sorry I forgot the smiley. :D |
| Lord Karsus12-15-07, 10:03 PM | Scouring of the Shire perhaps? :D -I don't like "scouring". Reminds me too much of a scouring pad, and then I can't get the image of Grima stooped down scrubbing floors. Don't ask. Sorry I forgot the smiley. :D -Oh, okay. Phewf. |
| sfdragon12-16-07, 04:26 AM | well i dont know if they can bound with a new tree, you could animate the tree and then give it fire resistance among other things.... |
| Khaelieth12-16-07, 02:18 PM | I'd say the Winterwood, The Laughing Hollow, The Ardeep forest, The High Forest, Kryptgarden forest and The Forgotten forest all would have a fairly high concentration of Fey in a surrounding community. The Kryptgarden forest has a Verdant Prince with some sort of community, I believe. |
| Suin Bahhar12-16-07, 02:43 PM | I love Verdant Princes. Do they hold any power in green elven courts or communities? Or are they too selfish and evil... |
| Green Elven Vampire12-16-07, 03:12 PM | Never heard of a Verdant prince before. What are they and where can I read about them? I know in the 3ED accessory Masters of the wild, there is a PRC called Verdant Lord, which is a class available to Druids. |
| Suin Bahhar12-16-07, 04:03 PM | They are featured in Monster Manual 4. They are basicly a CR 11 fey with arcane and melee capabilities; who ruthlessly plot between and against the Fey and Unseelie courts for their own benefit and power. |
| Khaelieth12-16-07, 04:46 PM | I love Verdant Princes. Do they hold any power in green elven courts or communities? Or are they too selfish and evil... If I remember correctly, he was blackmailing or extorting money from some Waterdeepian noble last I checked=) Serves the humans right for building their shacks on my land! |
| Suin Bahhar12-16-07, 05:23 PM | Nice. I might use something like that in my campaign. Bernstein did a splendid job (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/frcc/20070328) on Unseelie warlocks. What embarresing morsel of information does King Witchthorn (male verdant prince druid 18; CR 31) have on the Adarbrent family? |
| Khaelieth12-16-07, 05:41 PM | No idea, could be the Verdant Prince has got some knowledge of where their wealth came from or summat. Just guessing though=) |
