Is there any information on the Purple Dragon Knights besides what is listed in the FRCS? I check Champions of Valor, but they were not listed. Any Help would be greatly appreciated.

See Volo's Guide to Cormyr and the "Cormyr" novels.

As well, Ed's and Garen Thal's replies at Candlekeep. See the '04, '05, '06, and '07 compiled reply files for extensive coverage on the Purple Dragons.

Bear in mind that there's no such group as the "Purple Dragon Knights". There are knights who are members of the Purple Dragons, and they can be represented by the Purple Dragon Knight prestige class (or by the fighter class or the knight class).

That brings up a question for me actually.

Are Knights a rank in the Purple Dragons? Are all of them referred to as Purple Dragon Knights?

The "knights" in the Purple Dragons are officers of various ranks, many of them younger noble sons. "Knight" isn't a military rank, and they aren't called "Purple Dragon Knights".

Alright, so it's purely a . . . style thing in game (ie. whomever is of appropriate rank gets to call themselves knights if they so chose) and the PrC is just the name.

Thanks for the clarification, I figured it'd be must faster to ask than to dig into my pile o' books. ;)

I'm not 100% clear on the social convention of who is specifically considered a knight in Cormyr, but it isn't just a matter of calling yourself one. Garen Thal or Old Sage would know better.

Not all characters who otherwise fit the Purple Dragon knight prestige class would consider themselves, or be thought, knights.

On the other hand, there unambiguously are Purple Dragon Highknights . . .

So more of a bestowed honor, such as by a High Lord or the Royalty. Which sounds a lot better than some noble brat running around saying "I'm a knight!" ;)

Or at least that makes sense. :)

I wanted information on the Purple Dragons as a whole. How they are structured, how one joins their ranks, etc. Sorry about the confusion, the ambiguity was my fault.

That's cool, led me to some side thoughts that Faraer has been kind enough to shed some light on. :)

Here's what I use in my campaign:

THE PURPLE DRAGONS v1.2

As the Purple Dragons now stand, this is the structure of their ranks and various authorities:

NOTE: For the purposes of this document, all "Acting" ranks are "ranks given to members in training or waiting to be assigned their own command position". Pay is still the same as in their previous rank until fully promoted and assigned to the command position they are training for. For example, an Acting Lionar answers to a Lionar, but in practice basically performs the same duties and share the workload with him. He is still paid as a Swordcaptain until promoted to Lionar. Assignment can in rare cases wait for later, but pay increase is effective on the date of promotion. The only exception to this rule is when the Acting Lionar is a young noble (i.e. someone who never served as an enlisted man). In this case, pay is the same as a full Lionar.

Enlisted men:

Blade: Purple Dragon foot soldier (in archery units, this rank is alternatively called "Archer") (at sea, the equivalent rank is "Able Seaman").  2 sp/day

Senior Blade: may lead no more than a single squad of up to a 8 Blades (in archery units, this rank is known as "Senior Archer") (at sea, the equivalent rank is "Master Seaman").  4 sp/day (+1 sp/level above 2, above 4 if NPC class)

First Sword: may lead up to a platoon (3 squads each led by a Senior Blade, with an Acting First Sword serving as a second-in-command [2i/c]). (in archery units, this rank is known as "First Arrow", with an Acting First Arrow serving as a 2i/c) (at sea, the equivalent rank is "Petty Officer")  6 sp/day (+2 sp/level above 3, above 5 if NPC class)

Swordcaptain: may lead up to a company; in Cormyr, a company is also referred to as a "kadrath" (3 platoons each led by a First Sword, with an Acting Swordcaptain 2i/c). (in archery units, this rank is known as "Arrowmaster") (in cavalry units, this rank designate a single mounted warrior and is known as "Rider": this is the lowest rank that will be given to a mounted horseman serving within the Purple Dragons - more time, training and money is involved in the training of mounted units, and the higher "base rank" reflects this) (at sea, the equivalent rank is "Coxswain")  8 sp/day (+3 sp/level above 4, above 6 if NPC class)

Officers:

Lionar: may command up to a battalion (3 kadrathen each led by a Swordcaptain, with an Acting Lionar 2i/c and an additional Acting Lionar for general staffing purposes). Lionars leading an infantry battalion are also referred to as "Swordlords" and those leading battalions of pikemen or other polearm wielders are referred to as "Pikelords": these designations are only used on the battlefield and are mainly a means of differentiating the nature of each battalions (which simplifies and streamline tactical planning done by senior officers). Battalions composed exclusively of archers have not been known in Cormyr, and no need to come up with a similar designation has been identified so far: most battalions will have at most two archery companies used as a softening tool, with a third company composed of Blades located in front of the archers in preparation of the enemy -- in such cases, the Lionar in charge of such a battalion is still referred to either as "Swordlord" or "Pikelord", depending on the weapon used by the melee soldiers. (in cavalry units, this rank is referred to as a "Cavalier" and may command up to a lance composed of 12 Riders) (in aerial cavalry, "Cavaliers" do not lead anyone: similar to today's pilots, only officers are granted the privilege to fly, and the Cavalier is therefore the "base rank" for any rider mounted on a flying beast. Please note that Cormyr currently only employs hippogriff as flying steeds: other flying mounts can be accepted if trained to work alongside hippogriffs but in such rare cases they are the personal responsibility of their owners and are in no way shape or form funded or cared for by the military) (at sea, the equivalent rank is "Lieutenant")  1 gp/day (+0.5 gp/level above 1)

Ornrion: may command up to a regiment (3 battalions each led by a Lionar, with an additional three Lionars for staff --> NOTE: no Acting ranks are given from this point because service as a 2i/c or staff is not a factor for promotion. Officer duties vary widely at this point, and promotion is given according to individual merit, circumstances, and leadership skills). (in cavalry units, may command up to a post composed of 3 lances, each led by a Cavalier --> this rank is also referred to as "Lancelord") (in aerial cavalry, may command up to a wing composed of 10 Cavaliers and their flying mounts) (at sea, the equivalent rank is "Commander") (War Wizard equivalent ---> War Wizard)  1.5 gp/day (+0.5 gp/level above 1)

Constal: may command up to a brigade (3 regiments each led by an Ornrion, with an additional four Lionars for staff). (in cavalry units, may command up to a banner composed of 3 posts and supported by a staff of 3 Lancelords --> this rank is also referred to as "Bannermaster") (at sea, the equivalent rank is "Captain") (in aerial cavalry, may command a squadron composed of any amount of wings. This is the highest rank held by a Purple Dragon mounted on a flying mount)  2.5 gp/day (+0.5 gp/level above 1)

Oversword: may command up to a division (3 brigades each led by a Constal, with an additional staff of 8 Lionars and two Ornrions). Starting from this point on, in regards to land or air forces, there are no differences in the Cormyrean ranking system: a Bannermaster or a Constal who receives a promotion will both be called an Oversword. Officers rarely fight from this point on anyway, and all Overswords usually ride to the battlefield anyhow, hence the consolidation in rank designation meant to prevent any confusion in the role of such individuals. (at sea, the equivalent rank is "Commodore") (War Wizard equivalent ---> Senior War Wizard)  4 gp/day (+0.5 gp/level above 1)

Battlemaster: may command an army of any size, up to any number of divisions available to him/her (each led by an Oversword, with additional staff varying with the size of the army, usually a Constal and two Ornrions per division). (at sea, the equivalent rank is "Admiral")  12 gp/day (+0.5 gp/level above 1)

Lord High Warden: has dominion over all forces found within his assigned marches, unless the Lord High Marshal or King himself is leading troops within his territory. This rank carries with it a noble peerage of no less than barony or earldom, should the local Marchion/Marchioness elect not to engage their own person into military affairs (please consult the “Peers of Cormyr” document for more details on nobility). The Marchion/Marchioness of the said marches often takes upon the mantle of Lord High Warden him/herself, but if he/she elects not to, a Battlemaster is promoted to Lord High Warden and ennobled with the title of Baron/Baroness. If the Battlemaster is already a noble (with any title), he/she is elevated to the title of Earl/Countess. (War Wizard equivalent ---> Warden of the War Wizards)  36 gp/day (+0.5 gp/level above 1)

Lord High Marshal: has dominion over all military forces within Cormyr. This rank carries with it a noble peerage of no less than a dukedom. (War Wizard equivalent ---> Royal Wizard (other War Wizards refer to him as “High Wizard”). He/she has dominion over all War Wizards within Cormyr. This title was previously held by Vangerdahast (now held by Caladnei)  90 gp/day (+0.5 gp/level above 1)

(Clerics, bards and other spellcasters – including ‘citizen’ or ‘foreigner’ wizards or other types of arcane spellcasters not member of the War Wizards – that are in the service of the Crown are referred to as “specialists”, and hold no rank; they report to the Commanding Officer of the unit they are attached to.are paid 1 gp + 0.5 gp/total caster levels. A 10th level adventuring wizard hired by the Crown for a mission would be paid 5.5 gp/day.)

The Nobles and the Army

Nobles brought into temporary military service have no official rank unless specifically assigned one by the king. All are considered to be at least Lionars for the purpose of commanding troops, though they are addressed as "Lord" rather than any military title.

Knights

The knighthood is a non-hereditary noble title (non-hereditary baronet to be exact) awarded exclusively to individuals bearing a military rank. Upon being knighted, the individual is immediately promoted to at least Lionar (in the exceptional cases where the knighthood is awarded to an enlisted man); other officers are immediately promoted to the next rank. Knighthood is displayed in the form of a medal while in ceremonial uniform, or a diagonal blue sash while armored.

Beyond the honor provided, the main benefit to being a knight is that as a member of nobility, he/she is now bestowed the right to bear arms. The soldier gains no lands or other privileges by this rank, though he is permitted to bear a weapon openly when not on duty, even after retirement. He is permitted to have a coat of arms drawn up and registered at Court, and may gather up to 30 personal troops beneath it (an entitlement that is the equivalent of the Royal Charter issued to most merchants and adventuring companies). He is entitled bear his coat of arms on his shield, as well as sewn on the left breast of his tabard. He can also have it sewn on the tabard's left breast of his/her herald and/or squire (if they are also Purple Dragons), as well as on the right breast of the tabard of any man or woman working in his employment (i.e. the 30 personal troops paid by the Knight him/herself). By virtue of now being a noble (even a minor one), the right to bear arms extend to all men or women serving under the Knight, provided they are openly displaying the Knight's coat of arms (which limits his/her number of non-Purple Dragon arm-bearing followers to 30). Note that the Knight is personally accountable for all beings displaying his coat of arms.

Highknight is the highest form of knight in the kingdom, ranking, in terms of nobility, above all other knights. Upon becoming a Highknight, the Knight becomes a hereditary baronet in his/her own right, a noble title that places him/her above all non-hereditary baronets, and just below all barons/baronesses.

A Knight Royal is the highest of Highknights. The known Highknights are also known as the King's Blades. They are subject to no one's command, save the Obarskyrs' (i.e. the Royal family). There are currently six of these knights: Jostlyn Huntsilver, Asbras Orthwood, Baeryn Dauntinghorn, Albryn Emmarask, Ondyn Thundersword, and Ilbreth Truesilver. Knight Royals are ennobled to full hereditary baron/baroness.

Uniforms and Dress

Each company has its own badge, worn on the tabard’s left breast, representing the name or purpose of the company. In the rare event that a company has no official name or stated purpose (due to its direct service to a noble, in times of crisis or war, or when the company is garrisoned locally), the badge takes the form of a silver, shield-shaped brooch etched with the Purple Dragon.

Tabards may be worn, but only in white, and then only with the Purple Dragon properly emblazoned on its front. The personal bodyguards of the various nobles may use other colors. Black tabards are never worn, even by Knights Royal.

As Ed has said -

"Purple Dragons are the enlisted soldiers of Cormyr, and can be anything from impressed militia to lifetime professional soldiers."

PDK, is that from JerryD's Military Forces of Cormyr doc from candlekeep? That is what we are using.

IMG, one must be knighted to be a member of the "Order of the Purple Dragon" (IIRC).

IMG, one must be knighted to be a member of the "Order of the Purple Dragon" (IIRC).My homecampaign document grew from old discussions on the REALMS-List between, Jerry, GarenThal, and I. It is in no way official, and I often refer to Jerry's candlekeep doc when I need "more meat", as his is wayyyyy more detailed than my simple homecampaign summary. If my players were interested in Cormyr or its military, I'd use Jerry's document, supplemented by the medals and honor info in the Powers of Faerun book. However my current campaign is centered on Aglarond and Eric Boyd's adaptation of the Age of Worms, so my players have nothing to do with Cormyr, and are therefore 'happy' with my short Purple Dragon doc (and actually apply it to any military org in Faerun, including the gold dwarves of Great Baerynden - i.e. ranks name change with nations, but not the basic organization structure)

Edit: yes, the "Order of the Purple Dragon" requires knighthood, and I think the knighting is done by the King too... but I'm shaky on this one. I have another homecampaign document on Cormyrean nobility, but I'm away from home at the moment.

Thanks for all the Information Guys. I have another Question.

How if at all are the War Wizards of Cormyr affiliated with the Purple Dragons? I assume the Former Fights in Support of the Latter. Where could I find information about the War Wizards as well?

Would it be possible to Represent a War Wizard of Cormyr with the Warmage Class, or are the War Wizards Martially trained?

This should answer part of your question. Ed has also written a great deal about this on Candlekeep. Keep in mind that the War Wizards of Cormyr do at least as much intel and counterineligence work as blowing stuff up.

their relationship is much like the one between the army and the air force in the real world, independantly commanded, independant heirarchys, often dispositioned as required to perform a task, but they often combine their forces for a common ends. with the exception that the war wizzards can take control of low level purple dragons and require them to perform services.
