| Passivearmada11-19-07, 05:05 PM | Before I post this, I;d like to ask whoevers monitoring the FR boards at this time if it is alright if I post a thread discussing characters and their stats of R.A. Salvatore (and their ability to serve a fulfilling role in a party) compared to those of other FR authors. If you don't want me posting this, then I won't post on this thread at all, and if it is alright, then I will edit to what I originally had in mind. Thank you- just thought I'd ask. :) |
| Rinonalyrna Fathomlin11-19-07, 06:20 PM | Huh? What's this question? Personally I don't think NPCs should be party members for more than a limited time, if that's what you're asking. And the majority of novel characters don't have official stat-blocks. |
| Stigger11-19-07, 08:14 PM | As far as I know, the restrictions on novel discussions have been removed for the most part, mostly. Don't think the questions actually been asked yet Rinonalyrna. |
| creyzi4zb1211-19-07, 08:37 PM | Cadderly would be pretty useful, coz a good cleric such as that is definitely what a party wants. Drizzt characters aren't useful that much, cept for Bruenor. I wouldn't count on Drizzt tho', he's a good guy, he's pretty unpredictable. Whattabout epic characters? Gareth, Kane? I think Cadderly is the most useful in all his characters coz...he's a chosen!! Compared to other characters of FR authors, Cadderly I think ranks equal in all the top of the characters. |

Compared to other characters of FR authors, Cadderly I think ranks equal in all the top of the characters. This is why I enjoyed Artemis novels better. Sure his allys wern't his friends, but they were all formidable foes temporally on his side. I never really saw a point to Regis other than annoyance, or Wulfgars constant never ending inner turmoil. Even the Dwarf that joined with Jarlaxell and Artemis in Road of the Patriarch was more formidable than Bruenor in my opinion...he kept Artemis back when trying to save the half-orc in the Dragolich castle. On a personal note, can anyone answer to me in thier opinion and not stats, if Artemis would be able to best Wulfgar in battle? I remember when Morik the rouge gave Wulfgar some trouble and Artemis delt with him like a child. I had actually read The servant of the shard before the silent blade, and when I read of Morik, I had thought he was just a townsperson for the reason of how easily Artemis handled him. Then I went back and read the Silent blade and laughed. |
| Lord Karsus11-20-07, 12:48 PM | I never really saw a point to Regis other than annoyance, or Wulfgars constant never ending inner turmoil. -That's called 'comic relief', and the 'unlikely hero', and, in Wulfgar's case, 'inner conflict'. On a personal note, can anyone answer to me in thier opinion and not stats, if Artemis would be able to best Wulfgar in battle? -Depends on the situation. Mind you, Entreri is about ten levels higher than Wulfgar, but Wulfgar is a Barbarian, and Entreri is a Rogue. |
| Warning11-20-07, 01:27 PM | -Depends on the situation. Mind you, Entreri is about ten levels higher than Wulfgar, but Wulfgar is a Barbarian, and Entreri is a Rogue. You still haven't answered the question though. In your opinion who would overall win? How about this: Best of 3 1: Artemis has the advantage of sneaking and giving a suprise attack on Wulfgar 2: Wulfgar catches Artemis and he loses he element of suprise and they are to do battle 3:They are on the open field and both equal prepair while each other are in thier sights. Each has an advantage battle And the last is a flat out fair fight So I guess 3 is the deciding factor |
| Stigger11-20-07, 01:33 PM | Whoever RAS says would win, is who would win... everything else is just conjecture and speculation. |
| Rinonalyrna Fathomlin11-20-07, 01:35 PM | I find Regis to be interesting when he is used right (that is, not used merely as an afterthought), and I also think Wulfgar is the best developed out of all the Companions of the Hall. Not saying he was always well-developed though. |
| Warning11-20-07, 01:42 PM | Whoever RAS says would win, is who would win... everything else is just conjecture and speculation. But he won't...that's why I am asking for others opinions. So if you could, just a simple Artemis or Wulfgar. Thanks in advance. |
| Stigger11-20-07, 01:46 PM | From what I recall of Artemis and his character, I doubt he would bother with Wulfgar unless he had to deal with him. Just on skill and experience, I don't think Wulfgar has much of a chance against him. Though to be honest, I fail to see why it matters... |
| Warning11-20-07, 01:48 PM | From what I recall of Artemis and his character, I doubt he would bother with Wulfgar unless he had to deal with him. Just on skill and experience, I don't think Wulfgar has much of a chance against him. Though to be honest, I fail to see why it matters... Thank you, and and it succeeds because it matters to me. I don't really think RAS would take out the time on the candlekeep to answer a silly question like this. And the fact that as you said they wouldn't bother with one another, how else can I fill my curiosity? |
| Stigger11-20-07, 01:59 PM | Getting their stats out of the sourcebooks and putting them through a matchup might work to satisfy that curiousity. Though I'll add the caveat that most of those official stats are really crap and don't often reflect the characters abilities in novels and the like. |
| Lord Karsus11-20-07, 02:00 PM | 1: Artemis has the advantage of sneaking and giving a suprise attack on Wulfgar -Entreri. 2: Wulfgar catches Artemis and he loses he element of suprise and they are to do battle. -Entreri, because assuming that Wulfgar catches Entreri, the barbarian is still at a slight disadvantage, because he isn't necessarily prepared for a battle. 3:They are on the open field and both equal prepair while each other are in thier sights. -Wulfgar, because he is a brute fighter-type, whereas Entreri isn't. Note, though, that this still is going to be a close one, because Entreri is quite a few levels higher than Wulfgar. |
| Rinonalyrna Fathomlin11-20-07, 02:03 PM | So, what was the point of this thread again? |
| Stigger11-20-07, 02:05 PM | We're not really sure, Passivearmada still hasn't asked the question I don't think... |
| Lord Karsus11-20-07, 02:13 PM | So, what was the point of this thread again? We're not really sure, Passivearmada still hasn't asked the question I don't think... :: Chuckles :: |
| Passivearmada11-20-07, 05:05 PM | Okay, sorry for the delay, folks. This will all seem jumbled up, but if you understand the essage I'm trying to get across, then all is well. I just started reading Erevis Cale, book 1, my first Realms book not by Salvatore. I've already found several differences, in the forst 50-60 pages: 1. Uses the Realms a lot more than RAS (eliminates the "change some names and the book could take place anywhere" factor) 2. Characters seem more mortal, as dozens of people have already died. This adds excitement and unpredictability over the protagonists-always-win-every-battle I tend to see in RAS books. 3. Character. Characters alreasy have conflicts shown over rascism, and "I've-been-through-hell," wgich are interesting, but tend to get old. I agree with Rinonalyrna Fathomlin that Wulfgar was the most developed of the characters, but that was the only big thing that happenned to him. I was wondering if all the rest of the Realms books are more characterized and less combat-oriented, like the Drizzt books, which do have character in them, but not as much as one would hope for. Sadly, when I recall events throughout the Legend of Drizzt, I remember the battles and not a single characterized moment that really stans out in my mind. Pikel's amusing and Regis is funny, but I can't find that certain level of character I'm looking for. I suppose I'm asking if what I'm looking for lies within other Realms books, or completely elsewhere. Another note is upon RAS' characters "usefeulness." Already questions have sprung up over "who would win, who would win?!?!" (and it'd be Entreri- level 12 fighter/4 rogue/1 assassin/1 ranger versus a level 2 barbarian/10fighter?). Some (I won't mention names, but many have experienced his rascism and sexism) hate characters of RAS like Regis because they are weak or have internal conflicts, which define a character. I don't know how to say that Salvatore tries to make his characters realistic, but with their sense of immortality and the only reason that they're still around is because he wants them to be, just makes it all too... unrealistic. I know that whatever I'm trying to get across is confusing, but I suppose that that's the best I can do. Sorry. Also, regarding the statistics of RAS characters compared to those of other authors, I find other authors' characters to be more epic and buffed up. While being epic and all, they are still mortal, which makes Salvatore's characters seem more powerful- they're only CR 18s at most, but like I said, they seem too immortal and undefeatable, eliminating any suspense. Do you also find that Salvatore characters are amped with magic items (Jarlaxle), including Drizzt and Artemis? Maybe this is what also adds to the fact that his characters seem impossible to defeat. |
| Stigger11-20-07, 05:34 PM | Personally, I prefer Ed Greenwood's characters for exactly that reason. They show frailty while still possessing strength, and that the strength isn't always physical, but mental as well. Knights of Eveningstar I thought was very good about that in particular. Personal failings, regrets, missteps, fear... they just feel more like people to me than a collection of stats or some archetype plodding their way through a plotline. Sure his characters win in the end, not much point to the story if they don't, but the victories aren't necessarily as complete or as clear cut as Salvatore's seem to be, from what I remember of them when I read his first two Drizzt trilogies all those years ago. |
| Rinonalyrna Fathomlin11-20-07, 08:29 PM | I was wondering if all the rest of the Realms books are more characterized and less combat-oriented, like the Drizzt books, which do have character in them, but not as much as one would hope for. All of them? No. But in my opinion, many of them are, included the Erevis Cale books that you've just mentioned. Of course, Mr. Kemp's books simply are great books, and they stand tall against most other FR novels, RAS's included. I also agree with Stigger that Ed Greenwood really puts "character" into his characters. |
| Sol_Odlanier11-20-07, 09:19 PM | -I personally love The Uskevren Family From the " Sembia a Gateway to the Realms' series (specially "Shamur") and I also like the "dungeons" series... |
| Lord Karsus11-20-07, 11:23 PM | -If you ask me, one of the greatest FR novels, in terms of everything, is extremely underrated: Star of Cursrah. |
| Phelf_Der_Zemit11-21-07, 07:24 AM | Well, I deffanently enjoyed the Sellsword series better than almost all of Drizzt's. I love what kemp has done with his books (exspecially riven, the true hero). And for usefullness in a party, well jarlaxe because no body really knows what he still has left under raps. ... but you guys still snuck a verses thread into the descusion... The gods of pointless battles grow stronger, dont give in, they will devour your soul. ;) |
| Sol_Odlanier11-21-07, 08:34 AM | -If you ask me, one of the greatest FR novels, in terms of everything, is extremely underrated: Star of Cursrah. -Never heard from it. |
| creyzi4zb1211-21-07, 08:51 PM | Wizards left RAS alone with his Drizzt character too coz he wasn't doin anything that major on the Realms. I recall him mentioning it himself. Oh and BTW, I think that the best novel I've ever read was the Twins Trilogy by Weis and Hickam. |
| Lord Karsus11-22-07, 01:25 AM | ... but you guys still snuck a verses thread into the descusion... The gods of pointless battles grow stronger, dont give in, they will devour your soul. ;) -Exactly. And, 'Pointless FR Character Battles' just happens to be a portfolio I recently gained a hold of. ;) -Never heard from it. -Exactly my point: it's underrated. Well, if you ever come across it, read it. It's worth it. One of my top five FR novels. |
| creyzi4zb1211-22-07, 03:50 AM | Whattabout Kemp's books? THey were kinda good too. But I think Weis and Hickam were the bests! |
| Sol_Odlanier11-22-07, 08:22 AM | Whattabout Kemp's books? THey were kinda good too. But I think Weis and Hickam were the bests! -Paul Kemp wrote the second book of the Sembia series and I liked so much that I had to get the everis Cale trylogy... |
| Phelf_Der_Zemit11-22-07, 11:39 AM | ya but i despised jak fleet in it. I meen who has a problem killing ghouls... i like him in the other books but come ooon. |
| AffableDoomwalker11-28-07, 06:34 PM | "RAS' Characters and Their "Usefulness" compared to the Characters of Other Author" What is 'Marketability'? |
| Blibbering_Humdinger11-29-07, 12:51 AM | "RAS' Characters and Their "Usefulness" compared to the Characters of Other Author" What is 'Marketability'? Potential for a green-suckin' tractor beam, baby. A vacuum for cash is born every minute in the minds of mortal men--it's just a simple matter of bringing it out! :P |
| Bonzai12-03-07, 03:41 PM | I wouldn't say that RAS hasn't done character developement. The problem is that it was mostly done years ago when the characters were introduced. Now the novels assume that you are familiar with the characters already, and focus more on the plot. People brought up Kemps novels. The thing is that the characters are still evolving. Cale has transformed from repentant killer, to a priest of a god he is slowly coming to understand, to a chosen of that god, to a plane hoping world saving super hero. A few more novels and his character will be fully developed, and simply will be focusing on the story as well. |
| Alediran12-03-07, 04:25 PM | Or maybe Cale will constantly shift from one position to the other. A good development for a chosen of the god of deception. |
| Rinonalyrna Fathomlin12-04-07, 09:26 AM | Yeah, it's not that there's no character development in RAS's novels, it's just that it moves at a glacial pace. But I think it's also assumed (perhaps rightly) that serious fans of Drizzt and his friends don't want the characters to change too much. Otherwise they are no longer the literary equivolent of comfort food (and I'm not saying there's anything wrong with that). |
| Warning12-04-07, 04:37 PM | Or maybe Cale will constantly shift from one position to the other. A good development for a chosen of the god of deception. Wasn't he a chosen of another God too? God of loyality I belive. Not very Loyal if he left for the God of deception. Also funny how in ShadowStorm he he was deceptive to the God of deception (Promising an arch devil and item he already did to his deity) :heehee |
| Lord Karsus12-04-07, 05:11 PM | Wasn't he a chosen of another God too? God of loyality I belive. -Not Cale, no. You're thinking of whatshisface. Avner of Heartsdale, who is another of Masks' Chosen (He may or may not have a number). He was originally a Paladin of Torm, but when he died, Mask gained posession of his soul, and transformed him into one of his Seraphs/Chosen. Also funny how in ShadowStorm he he was deceptive to the God of deception (Promising an arch devil and item he already did to his deity) :heehee -I don't like how Cale does that. I mean, unless Mask is a complete idiot, he knows more or less what's going on. |
| Warning12-04-07, 05:33 PM | -I don't like how Cale does that. I mean, unless Mask is a complete idiot, he knows more or less what's going on. Well, Mask is a lesser diety. And I assume the Arch Devil is stronger than Mask. He did mention he knew of his "alley fight" with Mask. So we know he is well-informed. I also don't understand how Cale is going to prevail agaisn't Shar and her followers. Being that she and Sulne were of the 1st Deitys of FR. But being that he is the "hero", he can not lose no matter what the circumstance. A main character gets you alot of loopholes. He could have sticks and stones and he would win. |
| Lord Karsus12-04-07, 05:41 PM | Well, Mask is a lesser diety. And I assume the Arch Devil is stronger than Mask. -Depends. Mestophisticles (Sp?) is a multiplanar entity, whereas Mask isn't. However, Mask is a certified deity, whereas Mestophisticles technically isn't. Their "power levels" are roughly equivalent, I guess, now that I sit down and think about it. I also don't understand how Cale is going to prevail agaisn't Shar and her followers. -Who said he is? We're going to have to wait for the last novel to know for sure. The Orc King does mention drastic changes in Sembia (ie, the Shadow Storm), so even if "good" prevails, the consequences are lasting. Being that she and Sulne were of the 1st Deitys of FR. -That's only if you believe that particular myth. |
| Warning12-04-07, 05:48 PM | - -Who said he is? We're going to have to wait for the last novel to know for sure. The Orc King does mention drastic changes in Sembia (ie, the Shadow Storm), so even if "good" prevails, the consequences are lasting. I understand that Shar will have her little Realm (or big I should say), hence the name "ShadowRealm". But also you have to remember that Cale isn't going to just sit by and let things fall easily. Her followers will be cut down by him even if she does succeed or not. I don't think Cale has lost a battle yet since the start of the twlight war series, (even battle vs Rivalen). Also his goal is not to stop the Shar, it is to gain the item back in order to save his friend. I don't believe he even has the knowlege of Shars plan. And I am sure he will get that back and save "mags". All though I do enjoy his new personalilty based off of evil. It's like a hardcore Artemis (because Artemis is soft now). Hope I'm wrong and it sticks. I had always enjoyed characters fighting for a good cause but doing it in a brutish sadistic way. It's revolutionary! |
| Rinonalyrna Fathomlin12-04-07, 05:55 PM | -Not Cale, no. You're thinking of whatshisface. Avner of Heartsdale...) *ahem* Hartsvale (tomatoes, I know).:) |

| Lord Karsus12-04-07, 06:17 PM | But also you have to remember that Cale isn't going to just sit by and let things fall easily. -I didn't say that he would, or is just sitting by and watching. But, who says that he's going to necessarily win? *ahem* Hartsvale (tomatoes, I know).:) -Yes, yes. Tomatos. :) |
| Warning12-05-07, 04:11 AM | -I didn't say that he would, or is just sitting by and watching. But, who says that he's going to necessarily win? Does evil ever win in FR? |
| Stigger12-05-07, 06:52 AM | Quite often actually... it just gets ignored a lot when it does for some reason. |
| Lord Karsus12-05-07, 08:32 AM | Does evil ever win in FR? -Yep. |
| Bonzai12-05-07, 10:19 AM | Well.... according to Kemps newest trilogy, Mask does have followers on other worlds. The people who got trapped on the plane of shadow for example. As for Cale saving the day... I doubt it. He'll more than likley take down whats his name (the 1st chosen of Mask), but according to the Grand History of the Realms, Rivalen and the Shades restore their empire. So on that front evil does win. As Lord Helmet once said: "So, Lone Star, now you see that evil will always triumph because good is dumb." |
| Alediran12-05-07, 10:43 AM | So on that front evil does win. As Lord Helmet once said: "So, Lone Star, now you see that evil will always triumph because good is dumb." Except that five minutes latter he was heading to the Planet of the Apes on a woman's head :D |
| Passivearmada12-05-07, 02:23 PM | That movie's hilarious. |
| Warning12-05-07, 05:40 PM | -Yep. So you are saying that it is possible for Drizzt and Elmenster to die and the villain of the story spits on their body and that's the end of that? |
| Stigger12-05-07, 07:06 PM | That's always possible, just not too likely as they're both moneymakers. As long as they keep making money for WotC, they're not going anywhere. But that has nothing to do with the setting, so much as the corporate bottom line. |
| Warning12-05-07, 07:30 PM | That's always possible, just not too likely as they're both moneymakers. As long as they keep making money for WotC, they're not going anywhere. But that has nothing to do with the setting, so much as the corporate bottom line. And good makes money for WotC, because people don't expand their imagination to other possibilities. They want the good guy to win. It has always bothered me in a analogy how people got scared from movies. After seeing the movie, your chances of something like that happening to you are no different than if you were not to go and see it. So what's the problem with made up novels of bad guys winning? Who says the bad guys winning wont have a greater income? Ever heard of the Death of Superman? Death of Captain America? If anything, not only does it add more flavor but, people loathe characters after death. (You know how many people freaked out after FF7 when Areith died?) |
| Stigger12-05-07, 07:37 PM | You're dealing with a hold over of the "D&D = Evil Satan Worshippers" mentality that is a real concern for the business... so of course the good guys have to win. Besides, that's kinda implied in the whole 'heroic fantasy' thing D&D tends towards. ;) |

Nowadays, you can only get it for the PC, and I got to the Chocobo races when it decided that the game shouldn't play anymore. I think my cousin has it on Playstation, though. I'll get it from him. I think the main problem with D&D isn't the 'D&D is the devil' thing, but rather the game recovering from the '80s, where it was kind of embarassing. Honestly, do you know enough religious fanatics to say they outnumber the people that laugh at the idea of D&D? If a little bit of dark victories occur, maybe more people would be drawn to it (kids and their crazy horror movies nowadays :nonono:). I'd like to add that almost everyone who cticizes the game hasn't even seen the logo. I asked a guy at my school why D&D was 'nerdy' and the only response he had was "Th-there's a die, w-with ten sides!" I almost died laughing and I've never heard him say anything about the game since. |

| Blibbering_Humdinger12-07-07, 01:32 AM | I find the concept of "nerdiness" ridiculous. Just another gods-damned label so people can feel superior. It's actually a joke to one of my friends, who looks and acts the part of "nerd" and who was close friends with a guy who dressed up as Frank Sinatra at school every Friday. This over-talkative fellow (whose only real point of unpopularity was his loud and ever-open mouth, rather than any nerdiness) was a Nintendo fiend, and would quite proudly admit that no, he didn't fit in, he was a geek and nerd, if you ever deigned to ask him. (To my knowledge, RPGs were not one of his interests, but that's beside the point.) But I digress. What is a "nerd," exactly? Do people do things that are nerdy because they're nerds, or are they nerds because they do nerdish things? Which came first, the chicken or the ever-loving EGG?! |
| Stigger12-07-07, 02:42 AM | Labels and such make us feel more comfortable, since they give a general point of reference and categorization. No one fits into those stereotypes 100% more often than not though... but it makes us feel better, so we use them. ;) |

No one fits into those stereotypes 100% more often than not though... but it makes us feel better, so we use them. ;) Indeed--labels usually aren't very well thought out, and while there is often some truth to a label it really is just a mental shortcut. |
| Alediran12-07-07, 12:32 PM | That is why I love to mess people labels' when they try to label me :D |
| Lord Karsus12-07-07, 01:05 PM | What is a "nerd," exactly? http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/nerd -Interesting that it's a term that originated with Dr. Seuss. Do people do things that are nerdy because they're nerds, or are they nerds because they do nerdish things? -The former. In order to "get into" things that are nerdy, one must first have nerdy impulses. For example, you wouldn't play D&D if something inside of you didn't tell you that it was fun and cool. Which came first, the chicken or the ever-loving EGG?! -The egg. Dinosaurs laid eggs, and they predated chickens by millions and millions of years. |
| Diffan12-07-07, 01:19 PM | I always prided myself as the nerdy-jock. I never got made fun of in HS for playing magic at the lunch table because people knew I protected the QB's a** on fridays :D. But like Stigger said, no one fits 100% and lables are less defined when you leave the largest places that do lable, like High School for example. |
| Sol_Odlanier12-07-07, 07:24 PM | Indeed, I'm a "suave" kinda guy surronded by girls all the time and such and I think of myself as a Nerd. Just the other day I'm hanging out with this girl in my place, and she saw a D&D book and she was like "you just lost 5 "cool points" and I told her I can loose 100 for all I care I'm still the same guy. then she said "yeah you right," so I guess I'm a "cool nerd" even tho that is like fighter/wizard multicass :D |
| Andferne12-07-07, 09:36 PM | I've played D&D (almost sloely in the realms) for 8-9 years now. I'm much like Diff and Sol as I'm not what one would think a typical d&d player. Soccer for 15+years, cyclist and martial artist for 8+ years, and consistantly get hit on by girl (a lot younger than me). I;m often told I look 18-20ish although i am 26. ......wait a minute this isnt cupid.com  wonders away from keyboard. /waveshand I was never here. |
| Lord Karsus12-08-07, 10:35 AM | -I suddenly feel so...unwanted, uncool, unloved and ugly. :( |
| Sol_Odlanier12-08-07, 04:53 PM | don't you have a girl? |
| Lord Karsus12-08-07, 08:23 PM | don't you have a girl? -She doesn't help...:weep: |
| Rinonalyrna Fathomlin12-08-07, 08:51 PM | I have all the good qualities of being a nerd and none of the bad ones.:king: |
| Passivearmada12-08-07, 08:52 PM | I have all the good qualities of being a nerd and none of the bad ones.:king: Except for my thick glasses, me neither! |
| Blibbering_Humdinger12-09-07, 09:03 PM | "Nonsocial hobby?" But isn't a tabletop RPG, by definition, a social hobby, as it's necessarily multiplayer? Yeah, I'm thinking Rino has something going with that "mental shortcut" thing... |
| Blibbering_Humdinger12-09-07, 09:06 PM | -The egg. Dinosaurs laid eggs, and they predated chickens by millions and millions of years. Personally, I think it's a trick question. The rotisserie and the frying pan predate both of them. :P |
| Stigger12-10-07, 12:12 AM | You could probably play solo... it would probably be remarkably boring, but you could... though I don't really see the point. |
| GreenKnight12-10-07, 01:41 AM | You could probably play solo... it would probably be remarkably boring, but you could... though I don't really see the point. Maybe to you, but there's doubtless someone who'd get something out of that. I knew a player, for instance, who went through each monster in the Monstrous Manual alphabetically, and played out a fight between his current character and the monster. Don't ask me what he got out of that, because I don't have the faintest idea. I just showed up at his house one day, and that's what he was doing. |
| Andferne12-10-07, 01:54 AM | lmao thats funny. Closest thing to that, that I have done is our campaign ended with us falling through the cavern floor. The orc brute we were fighting died on the fall, but we were now in the middle of a gladiator type arena. Off in the darkness we see a 6(5) headed hydra raise up. The day ended there and we were gonna pick up next week. Well when I got home I wrote up the stats for our pc's (DM kept the real ones with him) and e played out the scenerio seeing what options we had and etc. We found out pretty fast that we couldnt win this fight stright up so we made escape plans. Got out and he Hydra couldnt follow. So we then gathered tons of wood and other burnable crap and loaded it into the arena and closed off the area eventually sufocating the hydra FTW. |

You know, the only reason I mentioned that was that I caught a friend of mine doing that years, and years, and years ago... doesn't make any more sense now than it did then. :D |
| Zanan12-10-07, 06:06 AM | -I suddenly feel so...unwanted, uncool, unloved and ugly. :( Hm, doesn't that befit a stone head lying in a swamp and being home to all sorts of lizards, slugs, snakes and what have you? |
| Alediran12-10-07, 08:46 AM | I have all the good qualities of being a nerd and none of the bad ones.:king: Yep, me too, it was hard to shed the bad parts. |
| Lord Karsus12-10-07, 10:59 AM | You could probably play solo... it would probably be remarkably boring, but you could... though I don't really see the point. -I play D&D alone most of the time. It's called developing my campaign setting! Hm, doesn't that befit a stone head lying in a swamp and being home to all sorts of lizards, slugs, snakes and what have you? -I wish it was sitting in a swamp. It's currently in the hands of Shar. |
| Rinonalyrna Fathomlin12-10-07, 11:08 AM | "Nonsocial hobby?" But isn't a tabletop RPG, by definition, a social hobby, as it's necessarily multiplayer? Right, but tell that to those who already have a faulty perception of things.:) In my experience any activity that isn't especially physical tends to be considered "nonsocial" and nerdy (although of course, plenty of physical activities can be done by oneself). Yeah, I'm thinking Rino has something going with that "mental shortcut" thing... Thanks, I think so too.;) |
| Sol_Odlanier12-10-07, 09:26 PM | You could probably play solo... it would probably be remarkably boring, but you could... though I don't really see the point. You MUST REALLY BE A NERD FOR THAT! |
| Sol_Odlanier12-10-07, 09:36 PM | -I play D&D alone most of the time. It's called developing my campaign setting! That's not the same though |
| Lord Karsus12-11-07, 08:49 AM | That's not the same though -Hey, it's D&D and I'm alone. It fits the criteria. |
| Stigger12-11-07, 09:33 AM | But not the spirit... |
| Ody_Saraph_of_Karsus12-11-07, 03:42 PM | exactly! Is not like you are having fun (Unless you're have fun building your PC ruin,:D) |
| Lord Karsus12-11-07, 05:27 PM | exactly! Is not like you are having fun (Unless you're have fun building your PC ruin,:D) -I have lots of fun. What's more fun than playing G-d? ;) |
| Rinonalyrna Fathomlin12-11-07, 06:42 PM | -I have lots of fun. What's more fun than playing G-d? ;) I agree... |
| Stigger12-11-07, 07:31 PM | Well, being a god for one... but I suppose you puny mortals wouldn't understand that. I would, but I'm not really supposed to talk about it much. :D |
| Lord Karsus12-11-07, 09:53 PM | Well, being a god for one... but I suppose you puny mortals wouldn't understand that. I would, but I'm not really supposed to talk about it much. :D -Stig, you're not a deity. Your just luminous. |
| Sol_Odlanier12-11-07, 11:59 PM | -I have lots of fun. What's more fun than playing G-d? ;) I have it my sig but Oh well... Being DM does't make me G-d, G-d is my NPC:D |
| Stigger12-12-07, 01:07 AM | -Stig, you're not a deity. Your just luminous. Oh the temptations to make off-colour innuendo right there... probably would if I didn't think I'd get crucified by a few people around here... :D |
| Blibbering_Humdinger12-12-07, 01:21 AM | Right, but tell that to those who already have a faulty perception of things.:) Well, them not being dictionaries, they don't care if a hobby is social or not, they just see it has "cool" or "nerdy." But thankfully, I'm out of high school. When you're out of high school, such perceptions amount to just about Jack--post-Twinkle Jack. In my experience any activity that isn't especially physical tends to be considered "nonsocial" and nerdy (although of course, plenty of physical activities can be done by oneself). That sounds about right, though for some reason anything that involves either tons of gore or tons of sex is exempt. So I suppose if the DM was incredibly graphic and the game played were, say, Girls Gone Wild instead of Forgotten Realms, it wouldn't be nerdy... :P |
| GreenKnight12-12-07, 03:37 AM | You know, the only reason I mentioned that was that I caught a friend of mine doing that years, and years, and years ago... doesn't make any more sense now than it did then. :D Geeze, two cases in one thread. I wonder how many of them there are out there? People who just sit down at a table with a character and a Monster Manual, and start rolling. "Fighter Vs Dryad. Roll Init." *rolls dice" *fight* "Killed the Dryad. Fighter Vs. Duergar. Roll Init." *rolls dice* *fight* "Killed the Duergar. Fighter Vs. Dust Mephit. Roll Init." *rolls dice* *fight* "Killed the Dust Mephit. Fighter Vs..." :uh-huh: |
| Stigger12-12-07, 06:01 AM | Probably quite a few really, frighteningly enough. Met a few I've suspected of it, but only one I could prove. :D |

So I suppose if the DM was incredibly graphic and the game played were, say, Girls Gone Wild instead of Forgotten Realms, it wouldn't be nerdy... :P Possibly. :-P |

In this case, it's also a good way to test out your character against monsters in a safe environment (i.e. if the dragon swallows your head and breaths acid on the rest of you, it doesn't matter because your character is still alive and well in the actual campaign--this is just a VR test run, like one of those Golden Saucer Battle Arena games in Final Fantasy VII). |

People who just sit down at a table with a character and a Monster Manual, and start rolling. :uh-huh: errrmmm me too i do it frequently! i've got a whole party on the go at the moment, it helps me work out how the different charachters interact through their skills and abilities. |
| Zireael12-17-07, 02:39 AM | Oh, it's awful... this arena thing... Back to the topic: Isn't Halisstra as useful as Drizzt? |
| Rinonalyrna Fathomlin12-17-07, 10:26 AM | Oh, it's awful... this arena thing... Back to the topic: Isn't Halisstra as useful as Drizzt? Again, I have to ask what it means to be "useful". Halisstra and Drizzt are both "useful" as characters. |
| Lord Karsus12-17-07, 03:45 PM | Back to the topic: Isn't Halisstra as useful as Drizzt? -Depends what you want to use them for. :angelhide |
| Passivearmada12-17-07, 04:00 PM | -Depends what you want to use them for. :angelhide To take control of one to use as a commander to your legions of whatever you command. |
| Lord Karsus12-17-07, 04:35 PM | To take control of one to use as a commander to your legions of whatever you command. -I command those legions myself (as technically KtM is me). So, we don't need Drizzt or Hallistra. If I/We had to choose, I'd pick Hallistra, for obvious reasons. |
