SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER OMFG LOOK AWAY SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER

Do any of them ever die? I was reading on how in the silent blade book opening it was said Artemis eliminated Regis. Then 10 pages later Wulfgar carrying him on his shoulders. Wulfgar comes back from the Abyss. Drizzt loses vs Artemis and Jarlaxelle but is spared. I was reading the opening pages of the newest Drizzt novel- The orc king and many arrows is alive as well from hunters blade triolgy. I can't say that even a side character dies in his novels. Let's not forget the drow survived the war of the spider queen too. Perhaps many more that I have not read on. It just kinda seems to me that RAS has a very very hard time letting go of somone.

1) If you read carefully King Many Arrows was like VI or something.

2) I dont blame bob for not killing off many characters.

SPOILER SPOILER

I forgot how to do the niffty little hide-away-thingy.

Though it looks like there might be some deaths to come in the new books sense it looks like about a century has passed, for Drizzt is now caring the Heart Seeker, and he is remanicing about Clan Battlehammer, I do not thing alot of people will like how events have turned. But lets all cross our fingers and hope that Artemis survived with the niffty essence of a shade in him. Though my speculation is the shades set off some sort of spell bomb after playing with nethral magic. Wow im ranting well back to the main subject, have at it boards.

A shade you say? Like the Twilight wars? That's awesome if Artemis becomes one. Eternal age/No disease/Self body healing/Vast amounts of shadow magic/Perfect thing for an assassian/theif. But as I said...RAS will never let his characters die. Drizzt will either become equally strong or he just won't die and be spared. And of course he survived...you think Jarlaxelle will let his best tool go to waste so easily?

Entreri isn't a true shade (at least, I don't think that's been stated anywhere), he just happens to have acquired and assumed some "shadowstuff".

I'm not sure about this Iv just started reading The Orc King and the Prelude Confused me even more than I'm already confused....I think it was in later years or something that happens later in the book?

What really scares me is this

*BIG SPOILER ALERT* In the book Drizzt says this

"I have watched the greatest cathedral in the world burn and colapse. I
witnessed the hope of the of the goodly drow, the rise of the followers of Eilistraee. But where are they now?" ..... "GONE!" ...

Sounds like dark days ahead to me .....
and that the greatest Cathedral part? Spirit Soaring possibly? the death of Cadderly?

to many questions and not enough answers

hahahha another post again

As for Artemis....Jarlaxle got him to stab a shade with his soul stealing dagger and use its power and when he did it sucked the 'shadowstuff' from the shade into himself.....they haven't really explored what exactly that means..aside from cosmetic differences...and I would assume overly long life

I really hate Drizzt. When I was reading the Silent blade, I wanted to throw the book in the trash each chapter it would tell his side of the sotry. It's all about silly half-lings,farie tale snow giants, dwarfs that won't shut up,drows that think they are some kind of paladin, a emo barbrian, a human that talks like a dwarf. It's like some stupid harry potter book. But! When Artemis's story comes into play...it's all buisness. It actually makes fun of haflings noting that "Entreri hardly feared that Dwahvel would send her three-foot-tall thugs after him". It's always some serious matter of life and death and about acomplishing somthing of gain. Where you have somone offering Drizzt money for helping them and of course he declines it. But I am dissapointed to say that over the years of novels with Artemis, he is becomming more and more soft. Letting many people live, or giving out 2nd chances,or just giving somone a warning. It use to be just staring at him the wrong way would get a dagger stuck in you.

"Fairy tale snow giants?" I assume you mean frost giants, and those are hardly Drizzt-exclusive, my friend. Blame the monster-makers at TSR/WotC before you blame the Drizzt books for them!

(I hardly count massive humanoids whose favorite tactic is to smush their enemies into bloody pulps as being "fairy tale," but then again, Hansel and Gretel was a pretty darn grissly fairy tale, so I suppose it... wait a minute! Almost anything in fantasy short of the scantily-clad fantasy females that adorn the calendars they sell at the bookstore can be called "fairy tale!" Jeez, why am I even thinking about this?!)

It's like some stupid harry potter book.

Watch it. Some of us like Harry Potter here. Myself being such a one.

I take it you prefer stories about villains and anti-heroes than stories about straight-up good guys. Your call, as it's your preference, but please do not suggest that the latter are "stupid." (What many people seem to think of as corny or cheesy is actually an accurate reflection of one side of life, anyway...) Not everyone is Artemis Entreri. (Thank God!) Drizzt Do'Urden stories are about classic heroic adventure. If you don't want to read classic heroic adventure, simply do not read another Drizzt Do'Urden book.

I leave you with one last thought: life is just as cheesy as it is gritty; just as bright as it is dark. Without the Harry Potters and Drizzt Do'Urdens of the world, the Voldemorts and Artemis Entreris wouldn't be quite so interesting; and vice that one a little versa. Yin and yang, my friend. Life is polar by nature. Without north there can be no south. Bearing that thought in mind, can you still honestly classify the Drizzt/Potter-type stories as "stupid?" (Always remembering that "stupid" and "not to one's taste" need not mean the same thing, of course.)

Artemis gets more soft, people change, plain and simple. I'd hate for a character to stay the same through out alot of books, they should change with their experiences or else their not worth following.

Drizzt has changed, although I haven't always loved which way he went. During the Hunter's Blade trilogy he gets really pretty whiney, although I still love the guy. How could you not love a swordsman as cool as him? Well ... besides the average haters who justify everything with "Salvatore can't write", which is obvious bull since he's been a beloved writer for decades.

Artemis has cooled, in some ways, but has become better in others. No he doesn't kill everyone that ticks him off, but how pointless would he be if he kept doing that? Hes more interesting now than in his earlier books.

And I agree with an earlier poster, if I wrote book after book about these characters I'd be loathe to kill them off too. Put hundreds of hours into a character you make and see how eager you are to march them off a cliff.

Oh, and as far as Artemis' shadowstuff, the difference has been more than cosmetic.

In the beginning of "Servant of the Shard", he speaks of slowing down, getting older. Hes in his 40s after all, an average time to slow down no matter how trained you are. Jarlaxle even taunts him during a sparing match that "Drizzt still would have had centuries of youth ahead of him," implying that Artemis did not.

Then he gets some shadow stuff and he gets slimmer and his health returns as well as his speed. This is detailed in a short story between Servant of the Shard and Promise of the Witch King, although I can't remember which book it was.

He knows its because of his stabbing of the shade and he seems more than a little concerned about that realization.

Finally, Kimuriel (sp?), the psionic drow, asks Jarlaxle why he's lowering himself to following a mere human who will be dead in no time. Jaraxle chuckled and recalled the shadowstuff Artemis posessed, not convinced that his life would be so short. (I'm paraphrasing obviously)

No dude, I have to read Drizzt story usually when Artems is invloved for they are in the same novel.

The only times Artemis gets any real character development during a Drizzt novel are during The Silent Blade, though. Prior to that, he's there, and he's badass, but he's little else but there and badass. Most of his character development takes place in the Sellswords Trilogy, and those books are 99% Drizzt-free (and only 99% because Servant of the Shard retains its Musings of a Drow Ranger essays).

But you didn't even acknowledge my point. I said it's fine if you don't like Drizzt-like characters and goody-two-shoes stories, but that you can't rightly say they're "stupid." Do you disagree, or have I won that little scuffle?

I have no choice but to read of a Drow that gets a hard on when hes around his friends.

That "hard on" comment is simply unforgivable. How many real friendships have you had, that you can say that with such disdain?

If you were paying attention which you were cleary not, you would have noticed that I said I only read Drizzt novels when Artemis is invloved. I was reading the opening to the Orc king, and he goes and attacks a group devoted to taking out orcs that usually are up to no good. What does he do? Not kill them...neither knock them out. Because we all know that when a murder is convicted, it is better to beat them sensless and then let them roam free again hoping they will never commit the same crime....I don't know if anyone follows this series but: there was an episode of justice league when they met a differnt scenrio version of themselves. They would kill bad guys instead of locking them up. Reasong being: After they would get out they would only attempt the same crimes until succesful. You always see joker and Lex Luther doing the same thing after they get out of prison. So why not end the problem once and for all of the greater good. Drizzt should take Lathanders place. I can see him taking a bullet for a squirell. Drizzt will never beat Artemis even if Drizzt is better or faster...the reason? Drizzt does not have a killing intent. I am not implying that he will not kill...if he can avoid it, he will.

And to the squall guy, to answer one of your questions: You say you can relate so squall correct? What was his way of thinking? In the end you have to do everything for yourself. Eventually everyone passes away, and you're left with nothing..it's so miserable. Never get your hopes up, you feel less pain, you can take on anything. Anyway..being this, you are a hippocrite my friend. You do not relate to squall in any way that I can see.

None of you I guess have read Raymond Feist and george rr martin books? The only way Drizzt or any FR hero character would die is after taking down some super overlord bad guy and saving the world. In Feist books, you see a hero in prison, you think of how he will escape...he doesnt...he dies...move on to next character please.

You have guys like Artemis and Drizzt who save a few villiagers from some bandits and orcs with an IQ of 30. Then you have guys like Cale or Eleminster who take out a motherload of powerful foes and actaully end up saving a large area or even perhaps FR world itself.

No need to worry guys, Drizzt is a good guy. And in FR, the 3rd of any book the good guy wins and the bad guys lose. The other 2 books are just the detail of the struggle but always the same outcome. Doesn't this ever get repetitave for you guys? Why is it you noticed that you say I enjoy villian novels? You think Cale will fail in Shadowrealm? No...Shar will be beaten somhow and Evris will be victorious. Then have 20 other adventures like Drizzt. Never failing.

-You're right. I try to ignore stupid people. Hey, didn't you already proclaim that you were leaving the boards?

...you would have noticed that I said I only read Drizzt novels when Artemis is invloved.

-My solution took that into account. Clearly, you were not paying attention.

I was reading the opening to the Orc king, and he goes and attacks a group devoted to taking out orcs that usually are up to no good. What does he do? Not kill them...neither knock them out. Because we all know that when a murder is convicted, it is better to beat them sensless and then let them roam free again hoping they will never commit the same crime....

-Do you understand the concept of a 'hero'? Apparently not.

-You must not fully understand the concept of a justice system, either. Killing an uncivilized creature, like an Orc, is tolerated in most places- although, in the future, not so much. Murdering a civilized Human being, or Elf, is generally not. No matter who you are, there are always consequences to your actions.

I don't know if anyone follows this series but: there was an episode of justice league when they met a differnt scenrio version of themselves. They would kill bad guys instead of locking them up. Reasong being: After they would get out they would only attempt the same crimes until succesful. You always see joker and Lex Luther doing the same thing after they get out of prison. So why not end the problem once and for all of the greater good.

-Again, you fail to understand the concept of a hero. And, killing an 'evil' individual does not necessarily ensure the greatest good, even from a Utilitarian viewpoint. Any individual, good or bad, has an unlimited potential to do an infinite amount of good. By just randomly killing a 'bad guy', you extinguish their ability to reform themselves, and have an extremely positive effect on the world.

Drizzt will never beat Artemis even if Drizzt is better or faster...the reason? Drizzt does not have a killing intent. I am not implying that he will not kill...if he can avoid it, he will.

-Drizzt has beaten Entreri multiple times.

-And, the problem is? Do you call the army when petit larceny has been committed?

And in FR, the 3rd of any book the good guy wins and the bad guys lose. The other 2 books are just the detail of the struggle but always the same outcome. Doesn't this ever get repetitave for you guys?

-That's kind of the point. These are the Realms, not Eberron. The current operandus modi of our setting is that of Fantasy- in which- nearly invariably- good triumphs over evil.

You think Cale will fail in Shadowrealm? No...Shar will be beaten somhow and Evris will be victorious.

-If you have AGHotR, you would realize that your statement is incorrect, and Shar does indeed triumph very much in the coming years.

Killing evil does not always ensure the greater good, true. But you fail to see that it still has the potential too. When I ask if the glass is half empty or half full, you reply with one answer instead of seeing that either is a conceeded yet equally correct opinion. A hero does not always triumph, it is only the fact that they rise agaisn't the conflict that many choose to cowar from.

The fact by what I meant of "beating" Artemis was this: If Artemis had the chance to kill Drizzt, he would (without the interfience of Jarlaxelle the merciful). If Drizzt had the chance to kill Artemis, he would not.

To say it is kinda of the point of the fantasy novels to have good triumph over evil? I'm sorry to hear that your mind limits itself to a everlasting none changing sceniro. Perhaps you'd enjoy that they were no bad guys and every body lived happily ever after? I however am a man who believes that one makes his/her own way. No God,No luck, No divine intervention...just the fact that your actions lead to a cause. Just because you do somthing bad will lead to consequences doesn't mean that the consequences will affect you. Example: If I were to steal somthing from a store without getting caught, I would gain an item with no mutual payment. However, the store loses an item they payed for shipment.

So you believe that Shar will destroy mask's followers and claim all before her? In wizard coast, it is agaisn't policy to allow "bad guys" to win. And shar being a antagonist to the story, thus must not prevail.

You're done kid.

Killing evil does not always ensure the greater good, true. But you fail to see that it still has the potential too.

-There are two clear cut options, here. Either it does or it doesn't. Neither option is advantagous, unless one has some sort of precognative ability.

The fact by what I meant of "beating" Artemis was this: If Artemis had the chance to kill Drizzt, he would (without the interfience of Jarlaxelle the merciful).

-Then you should have just written that. 'Death' and 'Beating' are two distinct concepts, though they are often interconnected.

If Drizzt had the chance to kill Artemis, he would not.

-So you believe. Given that there is absolutely no context given here, anything is possible.

To say it is kinda of the point of the fantasy novels to have good triumph over evil?

-Like I said, that kind of is the point of fantasy.

I'm sorry to hear that your mind limits itself to a everlasting none changing sceniro.

-Did I say that? You shouldn't assume.

Perhaps you'd enjoy that they were no bad guys and every body lived happily ever after?

-There are a few basic elements of any story, of which conflict is one. And, in order for conflict to be present, there must be an antagonist, of one sort or another. Thus, it is impossible to have some kind of work of fiction without an antagonist of some sort.

I however am a man who believes that one makes his/her own way.

-As an individual is the only one who he can surely know exists, all people make his/her own way.

No God,No luck, No divine intervention...just the fact that your actions lead to a cause. Just because you do somthing bad will lead to consequences doesn't mean that the consequences will affect you.

-Chaos Theory. Even the slightest action can have dire, and long range, effects.

Example: If I were to steal somthing from a store without getting caught, I would gain an item with no mutual payment. However, the store loses an item they payed for shipment.

-The store then goes out of business, because they needed those crucial few dollars, and were unable to pay their next rent payment. Suddenly, you no longer have a place to get food from. This causes you to have to drive an extra mile every time you go food shopping. Having to drive an extra mile means that, you lose that much more money, due to gasoline costs. Continue enough times, and suddenly, you are the one with a net loss.

So you believe that Shar will destroy mask's followers and claim all before her? In wizard coast, it is agaisn't policy to allow "bad guys" to win. And shar being a antagonist to the story, thus must not prevail.

-Again, pick up AGHotR. If you do not, that has, in no way, any impact on the truth of my statement.

You're done kid.

Are you sure you read and understood the first chapter of The Orc King? Does it paint a picture of evil having lost, and good having triumphed?

I also agree that if you dislike Drizzt so much, there's no reason to read books about him...books like The Orc King.

To your 1st statment...yes it does? It only enhances my point? Good guys always win?

To your 2nd statment: And I had read the prologue for any hint to Artemis. After which I stoped reading.

I am really not trying to get on anyones nerves, but I just get frustrated when people keep constantly bash my intelligence and not the flaw in my subject. I'd rather somone tell me "Drizzt isn't stupid because of Blank and Blank". Rather than, "you are an idiot and should leave these boards." Don't you think I would have a differnt reaction for the two, thus lessening the conflict? From what I've seen:

People try to tell you why your opinions are wrong/illogical. But then you overreact and take personal offense to things that weren't meant to be personally offensive. And THEN people start to make personal judgments on you - because one's personal, emotional reaction to things is a sign of one's character as a person, not their logic.

I wouldn't be even bothering trying to explain this if I didn't feel you were genuinely TRYING to understand things, by the way. I may not agree with most of what you say, but you seem fairly sincere in your desire to learn.

To your 1st statment...yes it does? It only enhances my point? Good guys always win?

The good guys don't always win, though. Most of the time they do, granted, and that's kind of the reason the story's lasted as long as it has. But The Silent Blade ended in a stalemate that left Jarlaxle at an advantage, as he obtained the Crystal Shard. That was one quest that ended in failure for the group--they never managed to destroy the Crystal Shard. (Entreri and Jarlaxle handle that themselves later on, but for their own purposes, rather than any kind of good-guyishness.) The Hunter's Blades Trilogy is a tale of a bloodbath at the hands of orcs and frost giants, and though there's a certain degree of victory for the good guys, the story ends in a standoff between Mithral Hall and the Kingdom of Many-Arrows--the only big victory for Drizzt Do'Urden and his friends is that they all survived and reunited, and that Drizzt grew us substantially. As for the Prelude of The Orc King, it's a preview of a world gone to hell. Spellplague! So much gods-damned wilderness! Kingdoms uprooted and others left as barely shadows of their former glory! Even Drizzt is not sure he knows what it means to "stand strong" anymore. Did you honestly read that chapter...?

To your 2nd statment: And I had read the prologue for any hint to Artemis. After which I stoped reading.

Artemis... possibly expired, most likely out of the story altogether. I heard once that Road of the Patriarch was supposed to be his swansong, though I also heard from that same source that afterward R.A. Salvatore said he "wasn't so sure" anymore.

I am really not trying to get on anyones nerves, but I just get frustrated when people keep constantly bash my intelligence and not the flaw in my subject.

Not everyone here is just constantly telling you to shut up, you know.

I'd rather somone tell me "Drizzt isn't stupid because of Blank and Blank".

As I said in a post that was obviously deleted: Drizzt isn't stupid because his character and his adventures accurately reflect one side of life. They reflect life from the vantage point of the righteous, and know, they don't always win, though from a certain standpoint--that of the marketing department at Wizards of the Coast, who want there to be an endless stream of bestselling Drizzt books--he kind of has to at least survive for the world to keep spinning...

FYI, I'm an atheist with similar beliefs as the ones you expressed in previous posts. However, I also believe in the same things Drizzt believes. You could almost call me an atheistic holy man, though admittedly I have a few rather unholy vices. ;) To be sure, it's true that evil does not always win. It is also true, however, that if people fight, and fight, and fight again, evil will eventually be beaten, and halted, and if that keeps going on, why, at the very least good will survive and flourish. It's that kind of heroic attitude that I believe the Drizzt books and similar stories perpetuate. Not the idea that "good always triumphs," which is so much fairy-tale B.S. for kids to be indoctrinated with so that they'll grow up with delusions of a fair world.

Rather than, "you are an idiot and should leave these boards."

I would not say that, though sometimes you can be unpleasant enough for me to suggest that you leave, anyway. A certain comment of yours, for example, about Drizzt's friendships, to which I responded but which has apparently been axed by an angry dwarven Moderator (perhaps one of Pwent's boys). Keep a civil tongue in your head at all times, and it's more likely that others will do the same for you.

Don't you think I would have a differnt reaction for the two, thus lessening the conflict? It's not fun having 5 differnt people on the board telling me I am dumb weather you think I deserve to be told it or not.

The reverse also applies. Stop using such counter-productive terms as "stupid" and start using such ones as "unrealistic," "shallow," "badly written," and other such fine critical assessments--there's a whole host to choose from, and they're all a good deal more specific than merely "stupid!" The sad fact of the matter is that your original post and the ensuing support do not appear particularly thought-out... they look and sound like angry rants, if you want to be perfectly blunt about it. Maybe not so much because you're wrong as because you choose an overtly flawed assessment of The Silent Blade's plot to make your point. (It did NOT say that Regis had been eliminated.)

In regards to your original question... "Do any of them ever die?" Well, one did. Wulfgar. Problem was, they wanted him back--the folks that write Salvatore's paycheck, I mean--and said that if he wouldn't bring the big barbarian back, another writer would. So Salvatore did it himself, and managed to make a FOUR! BOOK! STORY! out of it, which is pretty amazing, way to go Bob, nice recovery. But if you'd read The Orc King's prelude, you'd have seen this little snippet:

"I have watched the death of Luskan, and with it, the death of a dear, dear friend, whose dreams lay shattered and broken beside the bodies of five thousand victims." - Drizzt Do'Urden

From the sound of that, I'm betting Wulfie gets the axe again, and this time with the boss's approval. Probably at some point during Transitions.
