In the Dragons of Faerun Web Enhancement, much is made of how Chaulssin moves in and out of the Plane of Shadow at times. Is it realistic to believe they were on good relations with Shade? Does anyone have any insight?

-There is no reason to believe the two sides know of each other, let alone are involved in diplomatic alliances. The Plane of Shadow is a big place.

I will disagree here. Quote the Dragons of Faerun Web Enhancement, page 2, bottom right paragraph.

"Once the Chaulssinyr population stabilized, the city began to thrive and the inhabitants became a threat to the other planar interlopers, including the scions of Clan Malaug and, to a lesser extent, the Shadovar of Thultanthar."

Any other thoughts? The reason I am curious is that I am wondering what the odds are that a Chaulssinyr half-shadow dragon drow could theoretically have traded for Netherese magic with Shadovar mages. It could open up a whole new avenue for my evil NPC to torment the players :D

-Which still doesn't imply any sort of alliances. The Mongols were a threat to eastern and central Europe, and as far as I know, there were no diplomatic alliances between European kingdoms and the Mongols.

-It's your campaign, in the end, and you can do what you want to, of course, but there's no evidence, in my mind, to definitley say anything one way or the other.

Agreed, what I was disagreeing with was where you said

They clearly know of each other, though I agree diplomatic relations aren't evident.

-Well, that's still not true. One does not need to know of a threat to have it exist. It can exist without their knowledge. Objectivism in action. Using the Mongols example again, they were a threat to the same Eastern and Central European nations as they were riding west, and said nations had no clue.

-All that said, in the end, it's your call as DM.

Methinks an evil Shadovar or Chaulsinnyr "Marco Polo" would make for a fun sort of character. :)

-No doubt, there are multiple individuals in either city who, upon discovery of the other city, would use that information to further their own agenda and/or relative power. Plenty of opportunities in all that.

Similar backgrounds or planes of origin may not necessarily mean any sort of alliance or enmity. If you turn the argument on its head, i.e. humans and drow and orcs living on the material plane and are a threat to one another, but that does not mean they work alongside each other against a threat from the plane of shadows.

But in any case, you may well ask the very same question to Eric L. Boyd over at Candlekeep and try to get his ideas on the matter.
