Religion Question [Archive] - Wizards Community

02-12-08, 10:18 PM Hey everyone, I was wondering if there is a region in the Forgotten Realms that follows a Hindu type religion. Any information you have would be fantastic. Name of region, name of gods/god, or any thing else. Thank you! :)

02-12-08, 10:40 PM Kara-Tur would be the only thing remotly near a region that would allow a Hindu type god... but it would be an aspect of a god on Faerun...

Have you ever read the Bhagavad-Gita, or the Upunishads? They believed in only one god, Vishnu. Their religion is focused on the finding of brahman(which is everything) through the loss of their selfs through devotion and sacrifice.

I disagree. There is nothing Hindu about the dieties in Faerun.

02-13-08, 10:35 AM Have you ever read the Bhagavad-Gita, or the Upunishads? They believed in only one god, Vishnu. Their religion is focused on the finding of brahman(which is everything) through the loss of their selfs through devotion and sacrifice.

-Vaishnavism, which is a sect of Hinduism, which is principally pantheistic. The fact that Vaishnavas recognize other Vedic deities, in any fashion, makes it, too, pantheistic, in so much as it recognizes that other deities exist.

-Then you should really do some more reading, on either topic (though, principally the deities of the Forgotten Realms, as this is a Forgotten Realms messageboard).

02-13-08, 01:52 PM Well, I'm reading Neversfall right now, which involves the cultures of Estagund and Durpar. In that area, people believe in the Adama, which is, essentially, everything. If that's not a pantheistic religion, I don't know what is.

02-23-08, 12:39 PM The far southeast portion of Faerun has a distinct and obvious Indian-based influence. As RF points out the Adama is arguably somewhat Hindu-esque. Further south, the natives of the Five Kingdoms of the Utter East, the "Mar," are clearly representative of the peoples of the Indian subcontintent. And just over the mountains to the East (in southwest Kara Tur), the folks that live in the jungles worship the so-called Indian pantheon as detailed in the 1E Legends and Lore/Deities and Demigods.

02-24-08, 02:26 AM Read the stuff in the last few posts of This Thread (http://forums.gleemax.com/showthread.php?t=867601&page=14) - the whole thing has to do with the Mar and the Utter east (and the nearby Lords of Creation on the other side of the Mountains, as Tom Costa has already pointed out). The last few post have to do with a nearby region - the Taan (Hordelands) - and a religion which exist on the border of that land and Kara-Tur called the Padhran Faith - its EXACTLY what you are looking for, and it recieves the MOST detail in the K-T supplement Storm Riders.

Besides the Padhra (Vishnu) Religion, we have Indra, Yama and Kali all mentioned in CANON in the lower jungle regions of K-T (Larang Valleys) and Malatra (south-east K-T), and the are part of the FR pantheon known as The Lords of Creation (Vedic).

02-24-08, 07:04 AM Actually, the Padhran faith found in the Hordelands, the Raurin and the northern Yehimals is more like Bhuddism than any other. This seems to have given rise to the Path of Enlightenment (?) and variations in Kara-Tur, the same way Bhuddism spread through Asia.

And the Adama of Durpar, Estagund and Var is closest to the concept of the Brahman.

And Malatra, Larang and of course the Utter East are the home of the various other Hindu deities. Indra, Yama and Garuda have been named in canon, Kali AFAIK has not, but any Indian deity found in the old Legends & Lore book is supposedly a valid choice, according to the sourcebooks.

We've been trying to reconstruct the Utter Eastern version in the Utter East thread that Markustay63 linked to. If you're familiar with the RW versions (more than us, anyway :)), we'd love to have some input and ideas.
