| creyzi4zb1206-11-07, 10:11 PM | I noticed in some books that Elminster stated that there were some places in the realms considered as "magic dead" or in other words, no magic is possible in that area. How could Elminster repair a weave when he cannot cast magic in that place? And can the Weave be repaired? |
| BrennonGoldeye06-11-07, 10:26 PM | El could repair such a space because he holds the essence of "The Weave". Probably wouldn't be a fun experience, but He would be capable. Second question. Yes. It happens every time a wild magic or dead magic area is repaired. That would be both a feat and a PrC. Mystra can heal. Mages are Her white blood cells. :) |
| creyzi4zb1206-11-07, 10:37 PM | Is that the white fire thingy you're talking about? :) |
| Questing GM06-11-07, 11:27 PM | Didn't the FRCS mention something about using a Wish spell to revive a Dead Magic Zone or repair a Wild Magic Zone ? |
| Tempus66506-12-07, 02:30 AM | Champions of Valor also talks about the Order of the Golden Lion, an order of paladins in service of Torm. A member of this order can take several substitution levels of paladin, one of which grants the ability to restore the weave. |

A wish can also temporarily make whole a wild magic zone (but now i don t remember the details) |
| Stigger06-13-07, 05:55 PM | Silver Fire can be used for it too if I recall correctly... Thought Wishes and Miracles could restore both a WMZ and a DMZ though. |

| Stigger06-14-07, 02:30 AM | Could in 2e... not sure if it got messed with in 3.x though |
| Karsus the Mad06-14-07, 08:05 AM | Maybe... i don't remember; probably Old Sage or Lord Karsus will confirm or deny our guessing. Yep. Says so right on page 56 of the FRCS. Silverfire works. MoF has it that a wish or miracle permanently repairs both dead and wild magic zones. Dispel or greater dispel temporarily fixes wild magic zones. |
| The Simbul06-16-07, 12:06 AM | In addition to wish spells and silver fire, one could easily research a specialized spell specifically designed to repair dead magic or wild magic areas, which in turn would likely be much lower in level or incur less of a sacrifice on the part of the caster. I.E. as in Alamanther's returnMag acts as a more specific replica of one of the functions of wish spell [duplicate spells], and thus that comparatively limited use comes with an equally lesser XP cost..thus the same could apply for dead magic zone restoration. In fact, because dead magic zones are such rare (placed by the DM) encounters, effectively on par with a high-end CR terrain obstacle or trap, then a spell specifically designed to deal with them could be fairly low level and not require much of a sacrifice beyond the costs that go into researching it, the tactical disadvantage of preparing/learning it, and perhaps a lengthy casting time or rare component. |
| Zsych06-16-07, 06:06 PM | Considering that even using silver fire to restore DMZ is unhealthy for the Weave, and Mystra herself hasn't done it, I would think that a spell to repair the Weave might actually be dangerous if its used much.... redirecting a lot of magic from elsewhere to fix a place where the Weave is broken and effectively no magic can exist. Could be interesting, for such good intentions(reparing the Weave) to backfire and cause odd-effects in the Weave... letting opponents of Mystra make moves against her while her powers are weakened. (though she could always ban the spell use or some such... should develop spells to force the Weave to repair itself from the Shadow-weave :)) |
| Questing GM06-16-07, 11:09 PM | Mystra can restore DMZs ? I thought those areas have a complete essence of the weave so that's why its dead ? It should take a more physical or mortal interference to fix the Weave in those places because Mystra herself does not have any presence in those places ? |
| Zsych06-17-07, 04:04 AM | Mystra has been slowly repairing the damaged parts of the Weave and using her Chosen for it. That she hasn't succeeded yet probably means that its not quite so simple a task. .. Mystra wouldn't really have any problem manifesting an avatar, or creating an item to cast a spell for her and then activating it near a DMZ, if she so desires. |

QUOTE] One might consider that the magical power is istelf inherent in the spell (spells = chunks of magical power to be used to do things). If that were the case, then nobody repairs magic dead zones because they're hard to find, people in general are selfish, and it's probably really nice to know y9u can't be blasted by a mage somewhere in the world. |
| Psionycx07-03-07, 12:36 PM | I don't think this is discussed as much in 3E as it was in 2E, but at least then one of the major duties of clergy of Azuth and Mystra after the Time of Troubles was identifying and if possible eliminating Dead and Wild Magic Zones. Torm also took this up as a major goal as well. Mystra herself supports this task, and the Weave does seem to repair itself to a large extent. The number and size of the zones seems to have declined since immediately after the ToT. Also, in 2E one the major bonuses that Mystra's specialty priests had was the ability to function normally in dead and wild magic zones. This doesn't seem to have carried over into 3E though. Obviously, the zones are a major problem for people besides Mystra's worshippers and groups that consider magic a resource want them controlled. After the ToT Vangerdahast had King Azoun declare all such zones in Cormyr property of the Crown. Other nations that rely heavily on magic would likewise consider the zones a problem to be fixed, regardless of their feelings about Mystra. In particular nations like Aglarond, Thay, Rasheman, Mulhorand, Calimshan, Turmish and most places controlled by the Zhentarim would all want their zones elminated or at least cordoned off. Only active Shar worshippers or people utterly opposed to magic would want the zones to persist, although psionics users would just be indifferent to them most likely. Dead magic zones can be fixed (typically from outside) my Wish or Miracle as others have noted. Way back after 2E came out I and players I've known came up with various custom spells to fix the Weave. Silver Fire can also fix the Weave, although this is noted in the FRCS as being "draining" (not necessarily damaging) to the Weave. |
| boards07-04-07, 09:26 AM | Silver fire can be used to heal a dead magic zone, but for some bizzare reason Mystra doesnt want her chosen to do this. Never could figure that one out:confused: |
| dragonheart07-04-07, 10:30 AM | Silver fire can be used to heal a dead magic zone, but for some bizzare reason Mystra doesnt want her chosen to do this. Never could figure that one out:confused: basically doing so draws directly on hte portion of her essence in the chosen thus draining them severly for an extended time. WHile she wants tehm to fix such areas she doesn't want them "hurting themselves" in the process. So they are to do it by other means - probably with some of the specialty spells already mentioned. |

Yeah, just look what happened to Elminster in Elminster in Hell when he healed that tear in the weave. |
