Is there any particular reason why the main road west does not connect Iriaebor and Scornubel?

They're connected, but in a round-about way -

-It's likely that trading caravans and whatever heading from Scornubel to Iriaebor travel by boat.

Indeed, the river is probably the reason why those cities aren't connected by a main road.

Scornubel is termed the Caravan City - so presumably lots of caravans come and go from the place. It seems they would have to take a rather roundabout manner to hit the Trader's Road. I assume more trade goes through the Dragon Coast than through Cormyr, and so, would be a more profitable trip than going through the mountain passes to Cormyr. This would make a straight shot to Iriaebor quite important, as that city dominates the inland trade to and from the Dragon Coast.

Scornubel is also noted as having costers from all nations. Presumably, the River Chionthar is navigable from the ocean up to that point. Goods are disembarked at Scornubel and shipped inland - all the better for it being termed the Caravan City. But, Elturel is geographically better positioned to take advantage of any such trade from Triel northward - especially given Elturel's safety. Thus, for Scornubel to be a major part of the Chionthar traffic, it has to capitalize on trade going eastward - thus to Iriaebor.

Barges are noted as being able to go as far upriver as Iriaebor. It appears that most trade between the cities would utilize such. I would suspect that most trade in Scornubel actually consists of moving goods from barges to costers, and vice versa. However, that makes it oddly named as the Caravan City.

Mostly, it just looks kinda odd that the road does not connect the two, or rather, does so in a roundabout way. Blazing the way to lay a straight road between the two cities sounds like a good premise for an adventure.

I'd go through Berdusk, and then swing north for that.

There always the risk on running into pesky Elves when you cut through a forest. :P

-You'd then have to build another bridge connecting the road to Scornubel, and then clear a path through the Reaching Woods. It's probably much more cost effective to both governments to simply load up their caravans on boats, and send them downstream, rather than worrying about creating, maintaining and protecting roads.
Rinonalyrna Fathomlin

Indeed, and you wouldn't have to deal with the denizens of the Reaching Woods who prefer that their woods be left alone.

There's already a road through the woods there, and the PC's can make some coin by setting up an Inn/Caravansari at the new crossroads.

I still like the idea of Halfling River Barges - just basically humongus rafts - poling there way down the River, whilst the small folk belt out songs in deep, baritone voices.

A halfling monopoly on river traffic is exactly the type of thing that would spur economic interests to seek alternate routes.

Though I envision barges to be more of the banana-shaped medieval hulk variety, with halflings skittering about them in a buzz of seemingly useless activity much like insects.

Well, W&M did mention "ruthless halfling pirates" at one point, although most halflings wouldn't be like that.

R&C mentions that halflings have kept their particular culture for for thousands of years--they are travelling merchants and they have ways of communicating with others of their kind (via birds and other animals). They aren't just aimless drifters.

That might work fairly well in the 4e world, if their homeland (Luiren) was destroyed, their could be bands of these guys traveling all around Faerūn a hundred years later.

-Thanks MT63 now I got the 'Rush' song 'Tom Saywer' in my HEAD!!! Good song. :D

Now all WotC needs to do is create another one of those atrocious podcasts featuring the new halflings, and have THAT SONG playing in the background. :dancin:

-I wonder if the backlash it recieved is the reason why there haven't been any more animations like that. I was under the assumption that there would be a few, explaining and/or highlighting various changes from 3e to 4e.

-Eh, is an extra twenty dollars or so going to suddenly make everyone more creative? At least the animations have the potential to be funny. Which would you rather see, anyway? An animated 'commercial', or another live action one with the Design Crew?

Forgot about that entry, but I did reference it when doing my cultural history of Faerūn. I think most people pretend that book doesn't exist - its incorrect in so many places as to be considered nearly non-canon.

The Gur did come from Rashemen... and beyond. ;)
