Tell me about Nashkel please [Archive] - Wizards Community

11-13-07, 10:46 PM Last Saturday night I found myself starting a 4E campaign on the fly. Grabbing my ginourmous realms map I stabbed my finger south of Baldur's Gate, and announced to the assembled players " umm you are near this Nashkel place north of Amn."

Here is my problem I have not run a game in the realms since 1988 or 89 (it's sorta fuzzy), and I'm clueless of Sword Coast history anywhere south of Dragonspear Castle. I'm looking for help on fleshing out the area, and any sourcebooks that could help me learn more about the southern portion of the Western Heartlands.

11-13-07, 11:48 PM It has to be a 3E campaign you're running. 4E isn't even out yet. :P

Nashkel is a small farming/mining settlement on the northernmost border of Amn, and it has one temple, an inn, and a tavern, but other than that I know nothing about it. It's an important location in the Baldur's Gate computer game, but I've never seen or heard of it elsewhere.

Of course, that means you could learn much about the town simply by exploring it in Baldur's Gate (it comes equiped with a mine dungeon and a Carnival, in that game), though the part of the game's instruction manual devoted to "Volo's Guide to Baldur's Gate" does not say much about Nashkel or Gullykin, despite its admirable amount of information on the other cities and settlements in the game. (Volo apparently has a fear of Kobolds and didn't want to go near these places, which at the time of the game were both experiencing kobold troubles.)

I'm a wizard. The 4E aspect is not important. I'm just looking for info on the area. Hmmm so it would seem this area has only been developed via the Baldur's Gate game.

-It's a valid question, especially since, as the hamster pointed out, 4e hasn't been released yet.

The Lands of Intrigue boxed set [available as a free PDF download here at WotC (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/dnd/downloads)] offers some tidbits on Nashkel. As does Empires of the Sands.

11-14-07, 01:56 AM Don't recall it being mentioned much of anywhere actually, at least not in any appreciable detail... beyond what Old Sage mentioned anyway. Kinda half expected something in the Volo's Guides, but alas, no. :(

I would have expected it, too, seeing as Volo was in Nashkel when you meat him in Baldur's Gate (he's in the tavern by the bridge in the south of town, right by where you find Edwin).

... edit, neither is it on that download list, nor does it feature in "a few" sentences. It is just one. But you get a longer description of Beregost as well as Candlekeep, if this helps.

You do find a lot of hits in Lands of Intrigue though, the Amn part.

11-14-07, 12:20 PM Thanks Old Sage, Lands of Intrigue helped me alot. I didn't realize that the climate was so cold in Nashkel. I stabbed my finger south of my beloved Daggerford starting zone because there was a scorpion in the first encounter.

11-14-07, 07:34 PM Never seen anyone pretending to be a WotC employee... seen a few try to claim glory as the premier 'archmage', but you get used to it so long as you can identify those who know of what they speak from those who don't. I'll leave that descrimination to the individual though. ;)

As to Durlag's Tower, it was constructed by a dwarf, oddly enough by the name of Durlag, who went a little nuts after being assaulted by dopplegangers and the like, who pretty much destroyed his family and clan, leaving only him in the aftermath. Turned the place into a trap-filled nightmare of a dungeon once he drove them off, kinda the Undermountain of the Western Heartlands as it were. In a nuthshell at any rate... Volo's Guide to the Sword Coast goes into the details if you can track it down as a PDF.

11-14-07, 07:44 PM Sounds like a good place to send the players when they have some levels under thier belt's. Then again the party already has an unstable dwarf in it :twitch: :twitch:

11-14-07, 07:48 PM Definitely a great place to adventure in. Take a look for the pdf for a flavor of it, although it doesn't really go into much detail on its layout... which could be good or bad depending on how you look at stuff like that.
