| charonsg08-07-07, 09:54 AM | Olore to all i am thinking of running a campaign in this year of rogue dragons and the campaign will be in waterdeep what exactly happened in this year the forgotten realms history website www.genomicon says The lich Sammaster incites the wyrms of Faerūn into a mindless rampage what exactly happened and did this rampage affect waterdeep as in the city of spendours supplement, it is said that waterdeep has a dragonward. anyone knows or can comment on this? |
| MerrikCale08-07-07, 10:41 PM | I don't recall off the top of my head anything of significance happening in Waterdeep. However, the Grand History of the Realms comes out in a few weeks which would detail the events much better than I could |
| Slayergnome08-08-07, 03:31 AM | I do not think it's just the lich who brings about the rage of the dragons. I believe long ago some deity or deities induced the dragons of the world to have a "rage" at various times to decrease their power and allow other civilizations to prosper and dominate the world. Such as giants and elves. During the rages dragons often fight and kill one another, ruin their long term planes or get themselves killed. There are a handful of dragons currently in Waterdeep and the others are banned via a powerful artifact. So it would likely have less activity in Waterdeep proper besides the handful of dragons I meantioned. Now of course trade to and fro could be influences along with going on's within Skullport/Undermountain. But I don't see any epic dragon battles going on within the city itself. Though...I have some interesting ideas if you want to know them send me a message. |
| Neely08-08-07, 03:58 AM | Just off the top of my head. I recall the dracorage being linked to the appearance of the King-Killer star each 300 hundred years or so. A powerful elven mythal, the dracorage mythal, causes then to enrage all the dragonraces. This is something that has excisted a long time. Now for the lich Sammaster, he used this event as propaganda for his Cult to pursuade dragons into dracolichdom to avoid this dracorage, since he'd noticed that it doesn't apply to the undead dragons. What happened to in the Year of Rogue Dragons is that Sammaster managed to find a way to link the Dragonrage Mythal to his phylactory so it would no longer be linked to the appearance of the King-Killer star, causing a permanent dracorage effect. However Sammaster was stopped and defeated, ending the dracorages forever. And this will cause a serious shift in power over all of Faerun. Sorry if I got a few things wrong here and there, feel free to correct me. |
| dragonheart08-08-07, 07:53 AM | For details of waht happened you need to read the Dracorage novels (The rage, the Rite, the Ruin). breifly 25,000 years ago the elves found the dragons ruling Faerun and just barely managed to create adn protect a planet wide mythal that sent the dragons into periodic rages destroying what they ruled which broke the back of the dragonkingdoms and allowed tyhe elves to become the dominant race for the next 20,000 years. Sammaster linked his phylactery to the mythal allowing him to take control and drive the dragons into a (planetwide?) rage unless they became dracolichs under his control). characters int he novels managed to foul these plans destroying him and his phylactery by year's end. Waterdeep has 2 special mythals - the first prevents dragons from entering unless specifically allowed by the keepr of the Mythal. the second protects those dragons inside the mythal from being affected by the rage. so not much really happened to Waterdeep during the rage. Still it would be a safe base for adventureres going out dragonhunting. |
| Derren S.08-09-07, 08:00 AM | Important events in no particular order: Lareth, the king of gold dragons became enraged and was killed. The Impilturs dragon riders became enraged through trechary and destroyed itself together withr a large part of Impilturs forces. King Dragonbane, ruler of Damara was assasinated and his soul trapped on the plane of shadows. It was later recovered and reunited with his body. Many dragons were killed (Much too easily I might add). A monastry founded by Kane was as good as destroyed but they did hold out long enough to manage to find important clues in the libraries about the rage. In the process many (unraged) dragons were killed, again much too easily. The leader of the Talons of Justice was killed. The Cult of the Dragons started a recruitment drive to turn many dragons into Dracoliches. After the rage did end (which the Cult said it would not) many of those dragons did retaliate against the cult, weakening it considerably. Sammasters phylactery was destroyed (probably) killing him once and for all. The source of the rage (a mythal) was destroyed which means that dragons will never again be affected by the rage . Iyraclea, priestess (chosen?) of Auril was killed by a white dracolich. Because of the Dragonward, there probably have not been any direct attacks on Waterdeep, but the trade did slow down or stop entirely and for a merchant city like Waterdeep that is also a big catastrophe (except when you follow the books instead of game rules as in the books every commoner with a bow could kill a great wyrm with one shot). |
| DollNamedSanity08-10-07, 01:06 PM | The two Mythals around Waterdeep 1: Keep out dragons except those that have the permission of the wielder of the Dragonstaff and protect the dragons inside from the effects of the dragon rage (not that this will be a problem anymore. These two effects have been combined into one mythal, centered on the staff. 2: The second Mythal keeps the foundations of Waterdeep rock solid, no mater how much mining and tunneling beneath the city is done. As for what happened specifically in Waterdeep during 1373, the books can tell best, but the dozen or so dragons that were living in Waterdeep at the time were all outside the borders of the city, and therefore subject to the dragon rage that started. (somebody knew who the dragons were, besides their disguises and made plans to have them outside the city when it all happened). A good source besides the novels is Dragons of Faerun This is a very good sourcebook for running a campaign through 1373, no matter where. |
| dunehunter08-10-07, 01:15 PM | Like Doll said, Dragons of Faerun is a really good book if you want to run anything involving dragons and the dracorage. |
